Diane J. Anderson
James Anderson of Saginaw is mourning the death of his mother, Diane J. Anderson. She died Thurs., Jan. 17, 2002 in Duluth. She was 78.

The Rice Lake Rd. resident was born in Duluth, the daughter of John and Elsa Pentilla. She was a 1942 graduate of Denfeld High School. Diane and her husband Ray owned and operated the Hide-A-Way Resort on Island Lake for 15 years.

She is also survived by two daughters, twelve grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial gathering will be held on Sat., Jan. 26, 2002 at Fred Olson Mortuary from 1 - 3 p.m.

Sally Ann Newlander
Ida Benson and Irene Martinson, both of Proctor, are mourning the death of their sister, Sally Ann Newlander. She died Thurs., Jan. 17, 2002 in Nopeming Care Center. She was 56.

The former Floodwood resident is also survived by three brothers, and many nieces and nephews.

William “Windy” G. Winterstrom
Patricia Hall of Proctor is saddened by the death of her brother, William “Windy” G. Winterstrom. He died Sat., Jan. 19, 2002 in his Duluth home. He was 71.

He was born in Duluth and married Martha Kaarbo in 1953 in Duluth. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He worked at the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1992 after 30 years. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor. He loved woodworking, his RV, and traveling.

He is also survived by his wife of 48 years Martha, a brother, his three godchildren, and several nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and his loving dog Flicka.

Interment was in Oneota Cemetery.

Paul O. Helquist
Paul O. Helquist, a very loving father, passed away peacefully at age 90 on Tuesday, January 29, 2002, in St. Joseph Medical Center in South Bend, Indiana.

He most recently resided at Alterra Sterling House in South Bend. He was born in St. Paul, Minn., on July 24, 1911, to Andrew Helquist (Anders Danielsson) and Anna (Homman) Helquist who emigrated from Mockfjärd, Sweden, in 1903. The Helquist family moved to Proctor in 1915 where Paul graduated from Proctor High School in 1931.

He worked for the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railroad for over 30 years as a locomotive engineer. He also worked as a motion picture projectionist, and he co-owned the Orpheum Theater in Proctor. His interests included year-round fishing, traveling, and film classics.

In 1937, he married Marie E. Parent in Duluth. They lived in Proctor until 1959 and then on Long Lake near Twig until 1979. Upon retirement, they moved to Duluth Heights, and in 1982 they moved to Pharr, Texas. Paul moved to South Bend, Ind. in 1995 to be close to family members.

Paul and Marie had a daughter Emilie Ann Larson who passed away in 1962. Paul was also preceded in death by his wife Marie in 1989, by sisters Ellen, Myrtle, and Evelyn, and by brothers Emmanuel, Edwin, Harry, George, Milton, and Helge. He is survived by a sister Margaret Seekins of Hoyt Lakes, Minn., a son Paul M. Helquist of Granger, Ind., and another son Frank J. Helquist of Birchwood, Wisc., their wives Christie (Wick) and Debra (Borg), a son-in-law David C. Larson, six grandchildren Denise (Larson) Smith, David Guy Larson, Sandra Helquist, Kristina Helquist, Anders Helquist, and Anika Helquist, three great grandchildren Eric Smith, Tanya Smith, and Jessica Larson, and one great great grandson.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 1, at Bell Brothers in West Duluth.

Visitation will continue Sat. at 9 a.m. until the 10:00 a.m. service at St. Rose Catholic Church.

Burial in Calvary Cemetary in Duluth.

Memorials preferred to Proctor High School Scholarship Fund.

Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Robert Lawrence Leslie
Robert Lawrence Leslie, who was born 28 days after his parents lost all their possessions in the 1918 fire and was a 1937 Proctor High School graduate, died Thurs., Jan. 24, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. He was 83.

Robert was born in Duluth. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. He was a service engineer with IBM at the Chicago office. He spent four years and five months in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star and his unit received the Presidential Unit Citation. He married Rose A. Horvat of Ely in 1958. He was a vice president at Minnesota Woolen in Duluth. After fifteen years, he started his own computer business, which he continued until the present. He was a life long resident and advocate of the Hermantown community.

Bob is survived by his wife of 43 years Rose, a daughter Patricia (Randy) Klund, Hermantown, two sons Paul (Jodi) Leslie of Eagan and Glenn Leslie of Carlton, and a grandson.

Ryan M. Anderson
Services were held last week for Ryan M. Anderson. Ryan, Chisago City, was killed by a snowmobiler Mon., Jan. 21, 2002.

He is survived by loving parents Mark and Michelle (Moss, PHS 1989 grad), two sisters Emily and Julie Ann, grandparents Dan and Mary Moss of Duluth, Minn. and Harvey and Barb Anderson of Iron River, Wisc., and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Burial was at Chisago Memorial Park, Chisago City.

Edward F. Moran
Edward F. Moran joined his loving wife Dorothy on Sat., Jan. 12, 2002. He was 93.

He was born in 1908 in Duluth. He resided in the Proctor area until 1992 when he and Dorothy moved to Arizona to be with their daughters. Ed was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge and Painters Union.

Dorothy passed way in 1994. Ed resided with his daughter Dolores until his death.

Edward is survived by two daughters, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and their children, three brothers, and a sister.

A burial service will be held at Sunrise Cemetery in Duluth in the summer of 2002.

Robert “Bob” C. Norton
Services were held earlier in the week for Robert “Bob” C. Norton. He died Sat., Feb. 2, 2002 in his Duluth home. He was 79.

Bob was born in St. Paul to Clare and Selma (Nelson) Norton and lived in Proctor and West Duluth most of his life. Bob graduated from Proctor High School. He was a member of the former Good Shepherd Catholic Church and a member of St. James Catholic Church. He was a member of the West Duluth Legion Post 71, former member of the Kiwanis Club, and a member of the West Duluth Moose. Bob served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. Bob worked for the DM&IR, Taystee Bread, Metropolitan Insurance and was the owner of Bob’s Liquor in West Duluth.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Betty, a brother John Gregory, his sister Peggy Fiest, and a brother-in-law Raymond Erickson.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Bernice “Bea” L., a daughter Kathleen “Kathy” Norton of Duluth, two sons Frank of St. Paul and David (Mary Lou) of Canton, CT, one brother James (Pat) of Proctor, and grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jacob and Keeley.

Interment will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

James “J.D.” Grussendorf
James “Bimbi” Grussendorf and Sherry Leveille, both of Munger, are mourning the death of their father, James “J.D.” Grussendorf. He died unexpectedly Tues., Jan. 29, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. He was 63.

Jim was born in Duluth to D.T. “Deke” and Hulda Grussendorf. He graduated from Hermantown High School in 1956. Jim attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and subsequently joined the Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific Railway. He held a position with Minnesota Power and Light, and in 1952, together with his father D.T. Grussendorf, founded Grussendorf Nursery in Hermantown. Jim served as president and landscape architect for their family-owned nursery.

Jim was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church, Esko. He served on the Hermantown Credit Union Board, was affiliated with the Union Gospel Mission and was a member of the Minnesota Nurseryman’s Association.

He is also survived by his devoted wife of 42 years Bette Davis Grussendorf, daughters Mary Sandstrom of Duluth, Rhonda (Kevin) Tomlin of Hermantown and Janna (Chris) Martinson of Duluth, a sister Eleanore (Edward) Puumala of Spring Lake Park, Minn., brothers John (Mary) Grussendorf of Esko and Carl (Doris) Grussendorf of Hermantown, ten grandchildren, his German shepherd Matchen, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Apostolic Lutheran cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

George E. Wolean
George E. Wolean, who was active in Solway Township government for years, died Mon., Feb. 4, 2002 in Duluth. He succumbed to complications from Parkinson’s and Diabetes. He was 81.

George was born in Duluth’s West End. He was a graduate of Duluth schools and the Duluth Junior College. He married Donna Bodin on July 18, 1946. George served four years with the Army Air Forces during WW II. He later worked for R.E.A. Express for 29 years and was a State Fire Warden for 20 years. He also farmed beef cattle and horses, was a member of New Life Covenant Church in Twig and member of Trinity Masonic Lodge #282.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter Becky.

George is survived by his wife of 55 years Donna, a son Donn (Karen) Duluth, daughter Wendy (George) Lemoine of Canada, sister Marjorie Johnson of Minneapolis, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Clarice “Claire” M. Gonyea
Clarice “Claire” M. Gonyea, a lifelong Proctor resident, died Sat., Feb. 16, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. She was 89.

Clarice was born to Joseph and Eva (Westfall) Nagarski on Aug. 7, 1912 in Cloquet, Minn. She married her husband, Stephen on Feb. 15, 1934. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Stephen, infant son Roger Allan, son Sherman, sister, Lucille Nagarski, and brothers, Alexander and Edward Nagarski.

Claire is survived by her daughters Janet D. (Gary) Rado of Warren, New Jersey, and Lois Castro of Proctor, six grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, Stephen, Katherine, Robert and Peter (Shannon), and one great-grandson, Geoffrey.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
