Laurence A. Rekstein, age 78, of Fairfax, passed away Friday, April 23, 2004, at the Fairfax Community Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, April 26, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax. Interment in the church cemetery. Military Honors provided by the Fairfax Honor Guard.
Visitation will be Monday at the church beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Arrangements with Hughes Funeral Home.
Laurence Arnold Rekstein was born May 5, 1925, in Howard, South Dakota, the son of Elias and Rachel (Hanson) Rekstein. Laurence grew up in Beresford, South Dakota, later moving to Minnesota, where he graduated from the Willmar High School. Laurence served his country in the United States Navy from August 6, 1943 to March 10, 1946.
On November 28, 1946, Laurence was united in marriage to Arlene Marie Baumann in Fairfax. This union was blessed with four children. Laurence worked as an auto mechanic. He was a member of the Fairfax American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, and playing cards with his buddies.
Laurence is survived by his wife Arlene Rekstein of Fairfax; his children: Laurence "Rex" Rekstein of Lake Crystal, Mary Kay Lee of Littleton, Colorado, Thomas Rekstein of Mankato, and Sharon Jurenka of Lakewood, Colorado; grandchildren: Stacey, Nikki, Steven, Olivia, Alex, Sierra, and Kyle; great-grandchild Maddie; brother Stewart Rekstein; niece Dawn Drager and nephew Lance Rekstein; and by other relatives and friends.

Edwin Savela, 83, of Fairfax, died on Saturday, April 24, 2004, in New Ulm.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Franklin, with burial in the Central Lutheran Cemetery in rural Fairfax.
Visitation is 4 - 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Fairfax and one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements with the Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Hutchinson.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Savela of Burnsville.

Victor James Kielty, Jr., 46,of Mankato, died on Friday, April 23, 2004 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Funeral service is 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 27, at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.Burial will be at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery in Comfrey.
Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.
He is survived by his parents, Victor Sr. and Donna Kielty of Comfrey; children, Matthew, Rebecca, Dylan, Samantha and Nicolas; grandson; Christopher; brother, Jim Kielty ofCokato; sisters, Janice and husband Terry Zernechel of N. Mankato, Julie Dvorak of St. Peter, and Jane Lamoreux of St. Peter
Victor James Kielty Jr. was born Feb. 6, 1958, in Comfrey, the son of Victor and Donna (Maher) Kielty.

James Kragness, 60, of 923 Cottonwood St., New Ulm, formerly of Lincoln Lane, died Saturday, April 24, 2004, at his home.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 28, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Todd Nelsen officiating. Burial will be at noon on Thursday, April 29, in the Florida Lutheran Cemetery in Canby, Minn.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7-8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm, and one hour prior to service at the church.
James Michael Kragness, the son of Harold and Hazel (Bromberg) Kragness, was born Nov. 9, 1943, in St. Paul. The family moved to Canby where Jim attended school, graduating from Canby High School in 1961. He married Sandy Hanson, his high school sweetheart, April 27, 1963, at the Florida Lutheran Church near Canby. They made their home in Moorhead while Jim attended college. Always a hard worker, starting with a paper route as a boy, later working with his carpenter father, then as a carry out boy for the local grocery, Jim flipped burgers and tended bar to support his small family until he graduated from Moorhead State College in 1966. They moved to St. Paul where Jim worked for the former Economics Laboratory until moving to New Ulm in 1969. Jim was the Inventory Control Supervisor with Kraft Foods in New Ulm for twenty-three years. After a severe heart attack in August of 1987, Jim was the 27th heart transplant recipient at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, an event which changed the course of his life. After retiring from Kraft in February 1993, Jim was able to spend more time with his love of gardening and birdwatching in his back yard. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm. An avid golfer, Jim was also a member of the New Ulm Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy of New Ulm; sons, Jeff Kragness and his wife Janice of St. Paul, Chad Kragness and his wife Mindy of Becker; daughter, Nikole Freking and her husband Craig of Medina, OH; five grandchildren, Samantha, Jacob and Maggie Freking, and Joey and Cory Kragness; brother, Ronald Kragness and his wife Marianna of Moorhead; sisters, Janice Skatter of Crystal, LeAnn Olsen of Avoca; sister-in-law, Janice Zimmerman and her husband Roger of Porter; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Esther and Mandrup Hanson.
Memorials are preferred to the New Ulm Medical Center Home Care/Hospice and the Cardio-Thoracic Transplant Services/Abbott-Northwestern Foundation.

Marla Bender, 36, of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away on April 22, 2004, at Chesapeake General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye on Thursday, April 29, from 6 to 8 p.m, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Services will be held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 30. Clergy will be Rev. Timothy Grams. Interment will be in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent at www.sturmfh.com.
Casketbearers are Kyle Bender, Verlyn Hahn, Jeff Rue, Dan Reddemann, and Darwin Johnson.
Marla was born November 24, 1967, in New Ulm, Minnesota to Charles and Delores (Reddemann) Menk. She grew up in Sleepy Eye and graduated with honors at Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1986. Marla attended Gustavus Adolphus College at St. Peter and earned an accounting degree in 1990. On October 26, 1991, she was united in marriage to Kevin Bender at Zion Lutheran Church at Morgan and moved to Virginia the following year. Marla and her family were residents of Virginia Beach, Virginia for the past 12 years. She was a certified public accountant with Cherry, Bakaert and Holland in Virginia Beach. Marla was an avid flutist throughout high school and college and continued to play at church services in Virginia Beach.
Marla is survived by her husband, Kevin and three children, Jonathan (11), Sarah (8), and Hannah (4); parents, Charles and Delores Menk of Sleepy Eye; brother, David Menk of Minneapolis; father and mother-in-law, Keith and Kay Bender of Rockaway Beach, MO; sisters and brother-in-law, Kelly and Verlyn Hahn of Sioux Falls, SD, Karen and Jeff Rue of Racine, WI, and Kyle Bender of Sioux Falls, SD; several nieces and nephews; and many more relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's choice or to a trust fund for the Bender children. Trust fund address is Cherry, Bakaert and Holland, 222 Central Park Avenue, Suite 1400, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Please reference Bender Children Trust.

Selmer 'Sam' Helgeson, 96, of Redwood Falls, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at Sunwood Care Center in Redwood Falls
Services are 2 p.m., Friday, April 30, at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church In Redwood Falls, with burial in Crestlawn Gardens, rural Redwood Falls.
Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls and will continue at the church on Friday one hour prior to time of service.
Survivors include his wife Elda of Redwood Falls; daughters Verlaine Kolb of Wayzata and Shirley Strom of LaMirada, Calif.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister Tena Helgeson of Delhi.
He was born Sept. 3,1907, in Belview to Peder and Annie (Nordeen) Helgeson.

Gesena 'Sene' Schaffran, 89 of Wabasso, died Saturday, April 24, 2004, in Patricia Court Elder Share in Marshall.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Wabasso with burial in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Johnsonville Township.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunset Funeral Home in Wabasso and continue Wednesday one hour prior to services in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. The Sunset Funeral and Cremation Association of Echo and Wabasso is handling the arrangements.
Gesena Anna Schaffran was born Wednesday, May 20, 1914 in Johnsonville Township, Redwood County, to John Henry and Louise (Weichers) Schmiesing.
She is survived by her children; Darlene Christensen of Kensington, Lester Schaffran of Coon Rapids, Dennis Schaffran of Loveland, Colo., and Joanne Valentin of Marshall; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Jon T. Schwarz, 45, of Windermere, Fla., formerly of Sleepy Eye, died in an auto accident on Friday, April 16, 2004.
Services were held Friday, April 23, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Interment was in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Woodlawn Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Jon is survived by his wife, Beverly A. Schwarz of Windermere; a son, Christopher J. Schwarz and daughter, Jenessa N. Schwarz, both of Windermere; parents, Thomas and Cecilia Schwarz of New Ulm; brothers, Patrick Schwarz of Redwood Falls, Donald Schwarz of Wabasso, Dennis Schwarz of Miami, Fla., Joel Schwarz of New Ulm, and Gerald Schwarz of Mankato; sisters, Virginia Kalin of Plymouth, Annette Broich of Plymouth, Mary Beth Johnson of Cottage Grove, and Yvonne Lager of Mankato.
Jon was born in Sleepy Eye to Thomas and Cecelia (Sellner) Schwarz.

Dale Green, 63, of Red Wing, formerly of New Ulm, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at the Red Wing Health Center in Red Wing.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, April 29, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Red Wing.
Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Mahn Family Funeral Home in Red Wing is handing arrangements.
Survivors include daughters, Tami McGuire of Hutchinson and Mandi Green of Red Wing; four grandchildren and one great- grandson; his former wife, Carol Green of New Ulm; and sister, Tonya Metcalfe of California.
He was born Nov. 12, 1940, Long Beach, California, to Wesley and Mable Green.
He served in the U.S. Navy.

Del Grotto, 68, of Lamberton died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, in Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
Memorial services are 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 30, in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel in Wabasso with burial of cremated remains in Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery in Milroy.
Visitation is one hour prior to services in Sunset Funeral Home in Wabasso.
Adelor "Del" Edwin Grotto was born March 15, 1936, in Westline Township, Redwood County, to Edwin and Netalie (Jarveis) Grotto.
He is survived by his aunt who raised him, Isabelle Mueller; aunt Elizabeth Nielsen; children; Kathy, Marty, Dean, Kimberly, Kevin and Michael.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

Thomas Liebl, 39, formerly of St. James, died Saturday, April 24, 2004, at Johnson Memorial Hospital, Dawson.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 29, at St. James Catholic Church, with burial in St. James Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson with a prayer service at 8:15 p.m.
She is survived by children, Quinton and Anabeth of Montevideo; mother, Janet of Dawson; brothers, Mark of Hanska and Terry of Sabin; sisters, Shirley Dove of Madison, Sandra Hermanson of Montevideo, Lynette Peterson of Dawson and Kathy Wangberg of Montevideo.
He was born Dec. 5, 1964, in Montevideo to Aloys and Janet (Gamble) Liebl.
He served in the U.S. Army.
