Viola Wandersee, 85, of New Ulm, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 22, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Timothy Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation is 5-7 p.m., Friday, and 7:30-8:30 a.m., Monday, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Saturday.
Viola is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Professor James and Carol Wandersee of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; her grandchildren, Dan Wandersee of Seattle, Washington, and Christine Lepkowski and her husband, Bill of Reno, Nevada; sisters, Myrtle Schneider of Detroit Lakes, and Lorraine Estrem of Elbow Lake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Wandersee on July 12, 1986; sisters, Alice Hanson, Elsie Ries, and Erma Melick; brothers, Walter, Clarence, and Raymond Miller.
Viola was born on April 20, 1919, in New Ulm to Jacob and Sophie (Lorenz) Miller. On December 12, 1943, she married Howard Wandersee at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm by Pastor G. Hinnenthal. On March 31, 1981, she retired after 25 years as Deputy County Treasurer at the Brown County Courthouse in New Ulm. She had been a resident of the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm since 1995. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, and the church choir for many years.

John A. Sweeney, 84, of St. Paul, died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Saturday, May 22, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in St. Paul, with burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at O'Halloran & Murphy Funeral Home, Highland Park Chapel, 575 South Snelling Ave., St. Paul, and at the church Saturday one hour before the service.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Sweeney of St. Paul; seven children, including a son, Kevin and his wife Marijo Sweeney of New Ulm, and their children Michael, Anne and Matthew; 13 other grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Sweeney of New Jersey, a sister, Lorraine O'Rourke of St. Paul, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was born Feb. 25, 1920, in St. Paul to Arthur J. and Alice Sweeney.
He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II.

Elta Hillemann, 86, of Arlington, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at the Sibley Medical Center in Arlington.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, May 22, at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church in Arlington, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4- 8 p.m., Friday, at Kolden Funeral Home in Arlington and one hour prior to service time Saturday at the church.
She is survived by her daughter Karen Hillemann of Arlington.
She was born on October 17, 1917, in New Auburn Township of Sibley County to Fred and Dona (Bergs) Welke.

Emma Nolte, 95, died on May 20, 2004, in Edina.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, 1 brother, infant son and great grandson.
She is survived by her husband, Edwin; children, Richard, Lawrence, Howard, Gladys Olson, Kenneth, Maria Field, Carol Dable, Donald, Joyce Iverson, Alice Michelson, Sharon Bronson; 1 brother; 33 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 18 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday, May 24, at Bloomington Lutheran Church, 9350 Portland Ave., Bloomington MN 952-888-2475.
Visitation is Sunday, May 23, 3-6 p.m., at Heritage of Edina, 3420 Heritage Drive, Edina MN 952-920-9145; and 1 hour prior to services at the church.
Interment is Monday, May 24, 3:00 p.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, New Ulm MN.
Emma attended college in New Ulm at Dr. Martin Luther. She graduated June 1930 and taught school for 1 year in Reedsville, WI. She married in June 1932 and returned to New Ulm where Edwin taught at St. Paul's Lutheran school for 50 years. Together they raised 11 children. The past 15 years they have resided at Heritage of Edina, which is owned by her daughter Maria and husband Wayne.

Lorinda Peterson, 86, of Winthrop, died on Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday, May 24, 2004, at Faith United Church in Winthrop, with burial in the United Methodist Cemetery in Cornish Township, Sibley County.
Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church.
Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop is handling the arrangements.

Otis Loose, 83, of 805 S. Jefferson St., New Ulm, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, at the First United Methodist Church in New Ulm, with Rev. Dean Nosek officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm veterans organizations will follow in the Soldiers Rest section of the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8: p.m. Monday and 7-8 a.m. Tuesday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm, and one hour prior to service at the church.
Otis Arno Loose, the son of Arno and Erma (Pollei) Loose, was born July 10, 1920, in New Ulm. After graduating from New Ulm High School in 1937, Otis attended Macalester College in St. Paul for four years. He entered the United States Army Air Force in 1942 serving as a bomber pilot in the European Theater during World War II. Otis married Peggy Hammond March 12, 1943 in Fort Worth, TX. Following his honorable discharge, they made their home in New Ulm. Some years later, Otis and Hank Nicklasson entered into the sporting goods business together, with Otis eventually owning and operating The Sportsman's Shop. After being elected Brown County Auditor, Otis returned to college, earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Mankato State College in 1972. He served as Brown County Auditor and Administrator for many years, retiring in 1986. Otis was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in New Ulm, serving in many offices and in various capacities. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post #132 and VFW Post #1648 of New Ulm and was elected to the Macalester College Hall of Fame and the New Ulm Baseball Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy; daughters, Ronda Hanten of New Ulm, Geribeth Loose of Mankato; sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Karen Loose of Savage, Timothy and Sue Loose of New Ulm; seven grandchildren, Amy Friedges, Tony Hanten, Rick, Sara, Emily, Rebecca and Adam Loose; six great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emma Hanten, Nicholas, Danielle and Matthew Friedges, and Myles Otis Loose; sister, Shirley Schneider of Mesa, AZ; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Eugene 'Gene' Schmid, 83, of 1014 1st North in New Ulm died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis.
Funeral Service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 26, at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldiers Rest Section. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm veterans organizations.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, and 7:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday.
Gene is survived by his wife, Berneatta "Nita" Schmid of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and Ron Hacker of Sterling, Virginia, and Jackie and Tom Roesch of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Ellen Mueller of Saint Paul, Rod and Ginny Mueller of New Ulm, Dan and Laura Mueller of Minneapolis, Corey and Julie Schmid of Sauk Rapids, and Charles and Stephanie Schmid of North Mankato; seventeen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Schmid of Hutchinson; and a sister-in-law, Neoma Schmid of Sleepy Eye.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a brother, Ethelbert Schmid.
Eugene was born on May 10, 1921, in Sleepy Eye to William and Mary (Prokosch) Schmid. He farmed from 1951-1965 in Home Township, Brown County. On August 7, 1965, he married Berneatta Weber-Mueller at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. He was a self employed carpenter in New Ulm until retiring in 1984. He volunteered many hours at the Treasure Haus and the Lind House. Gene was a World War II Veteran receiving the purple heart, a member of the VFW, American Legion, DAV, and St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed his family and coffee buddies. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be given to the St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

Cecelia 'Cele' Zieske, 91, formerly of rural Courtland, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with Father Edward J. Ardolf officiating. Burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, and from 7:30-9:30 a.m., Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
Cecelia is survived by her sisters and brother-in-law, Virginia and Eugene Griebel of Lafayette, and Marion Stevensen of Nicollet; and a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Rose Meurer of Nicollet.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin A. Zieske on April 25, 1984; and sisters Dorothy Anton, Grace Giefer, Lillian Wills, Gertrude Hoffmann, Beatrice Meurer and Anna Mae Larson.
Cecelia Meurer was born on November 10, 1912, in Belgrade Township, Nicollet County, to Joseph and Anna (Meurer) Meurer. She graduated from Nicollet High School in 1931. On October 29, 1935, she married Marvin A. Zieske at St. Paul's Catholic Church, in Nicollet. After marriage they farmed in Courtland Township, Nicollet County and retired in 1981. In 1997 she moved to the Garden Terrace Apartments in New Ulm. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm.

Lola May Anderson, 82, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Hector, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the Mayo Hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, at the First Lutheran Church in Hector. Bsurial of cremated remains will be in the Hector City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at the Hughes Funeral Home in Hector, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Lola is survived by her sons, Bruce of Scottsdale, Ariz., Robert (Pete) of Clarkfield, and Richard (Doc) of Hastings; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;a brother Joseph Saatkamp, and a sister Lula (Toots) Niesmann.
Lola May Anderson was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Pana, Ill., to William and Alta Lula Saatkamp.

Mark J. Bierl, 64, of Wanda, died on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at V. A. Medical Center in Minneapolis.
Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Wanda. Burial will be at the St. Mathias Catholic Cemetery in Wanda.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 25 at the St. Mathias Catholic Church in Wanda. There will be a parish prayer service on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the church.
Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.
He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Joan Baumann of Walnut Grove, Lorena Jenniges of Wanda, Roland Bierl of Wanda, Carol Ann Jones of Bloomington, Peter Bierl of Wanda, and Clarice Wielinski of Eagan.
Mark Joseph Bierl was born Sept. 17, 1939, in Wanda to Joseph and Mary Ann (Borte) Bierl.

Roland W. Mehlberg, 79, of 1516 Oakwood Avenue in New Ulm went to his eternal rest early Monday morning, May 24, 2004.
Services will be 1 p.m., Friday, May 28, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be noon until the time of service Friday at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Roland was born July 18, 1924, in Raymond, South Dakota. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII as a paratrooper in the Pacific Theater. In 1947, he married Edna Larson and they made their living farming in the Raymond and Watertown, South Dakota areas. In 1963, the family moved to New Ulm, and Roland worked for Kraft Foods for 21 years until retiring in 1986. His hobbies included woodworking and caring for his home and yard. His faith, church, and family always came first in his life.
Survivors include his loving and devoted family: wife of 57 years, Edna (Larson); children, Ronald (Sarah), Shirleen (Donald Hahnke), and Randy (Lois); eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Shawna and Abby Mehlberg, Cory (Julie), Joel (Erin) Hahnke and Katy (Ben Troge), Ryan and Amanda Mehlberg; two great-grandchildren who will meet him in heaven, Skyler Troge and Matthew Hahnke; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents, William and Helene; three brothers, Alfred, Wilbur, and Herbert; three sisters, Clara Heier, Ruth Nyberg, and Doris Deibert; two grandchildren, Tammy Mehlberg and Ronald Mehlberg Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the St. John's Lutheran Church.
