Elbert W. Marlow
Elbert W. Marlow, formerly of Railview Apartments in Proctor, died Wed., Feb. 13, 2002 in Lakeshore Lutheran Home in Duluth. He was 81.

Elbert was born in 1920 in Ofuskee, Okla. to Edward and Clara (Weber) Marlow. He grew up in Oklahoma and had been a Duluth resident since 1954. He married Doris M. Jensen in 1954 in Duluth. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He had been employed as a diesel mechanic.

Elbert was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Doris in 1992.

He is survived by a son Barry (Penny) of Duluth, daughters Rhonda (Dan) Saarela of Duluth, Jane (Tad) Hoskins of Little Falls, Karen (Pat) Kilby of Otter Tail, Minn. and Anita Marlow of Colo., a sister, two brothers, eight grandchildren, and a great granddaughter.

Burial was in Union Cemetery, Hermantown. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Margaret I. Johnson
Margaret I. Johnson, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1939, has died at the age of 82.

The New Hope resident was preceded in death by her husband, Grant.

She is survived by a daughter Brenda (Corky) Thorpe, a son Brad (Kathy) a sister Evelyn Wall of Calif., seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Interment was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

Kenneth Judson Price
Kenneth Judson Price, who was a 1940 Proctor High School graduate and worked for the DM&IR for 42 years, died Mon., Feb. 11, 2002 in a Duluth Hospital. He was 80.

He was born in Hibbing. He was an Esko resident for 38 years, living on Hwy. 61 East in a home he built, and an area resident for many years. He had been employed as a locomotive engineer with the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway retiring in 1980. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Proctor Moose Lodge No. 1302, West Duluth American Legion Post No. 71, United Transportation Union and NARVRE.

Survivors include his wife Jennie H., three daughters, a brother, nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

John M. Reed
John M. Reed of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Proctor, Minn., passed away on Tues., Feb. 12, 2002. He was 78.

He was a resident of Proctor for many years and a long time member of the VFW. He served 29 years in the U.S. Navy, and was retired from the Universal Atlas cement plant.

John was preceded in death by his wife Ruth in Dec. 2001.

He is survived by his daughter Fran Sommers of Rosemont, Minn., son Leonard Reed of Isanti, Minn., stepchildren Richard and Lynn Bradford and Marilee Bradford Driver, former wife Helen “Cookie”, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joanne B. Tobolaski
Chester P. (Jan) Tobolaski of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother Joanne B. Tobolaski. The Cloquet resident died Sun., Feb. 17, 2002 in a Duluth hospital surrounded by her family. She was 68.

She was born in 1933 in Cloquet. She married Chester P. Tobolaski in 1949.

She is also survived by five other sons, seven daughters, 27 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a brother, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will continue today, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Funeral Liturgy at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 102 Fourth St., Cloquet. Interment will be in New Calvary Cemetery, Cloquet.

Edward “Ed” Joseph Weiler, Jr.
Services were held yesterday for Edward “Ed” Joseph Weiler, Jr. of Proctor. He died Sun., Feb. 24, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. He was 75.

Ed was born in Midway Township on July 5, 1926 to Edward J. Sr. and Edna H. (Zebott).

He served in the Army during WWII in Germany and France and worked as a blacksmith for the DM&IR Railroad retiring in 1986 after 37 years of service. Ed loved to fish, garden, work in his hobby farm, and attend sporting events of his children and grandchildren. Ed was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Munger, the Proctor American Legion, the DM&IR Veterans Association, and the 100th Infantry.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gerald, and an infant brother and sister.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine V; a son, James “Jim” E. (Karen) of North St. Paul; a daughter, Anne L. (Rick) Mai of St. Germain, Wisc.; a sister, Virginia Anderson of Proctor; and grandchildren, Nathan, Brett, Nicole and Ashley.

Burial was in the Augustana Cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Roger David Swanstrom
Douglas Swanstrom of Grand Lake is mourning the death of his father, Roger David Swanstrom. He died Thurs., Feb. 21, 2002 in Largo, Fla. at the age of 84.

Roger was born in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School in 1934 and the University of Minnesota in 1938. He married Betty Dygert at Knox Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis, in 1940. Roger worked at the shipyards. After a very brief time in New York City, they moved to Minneapolis. He was chief industrial engineer and production manager for Minneapolis Strutwear for 14 years. He founded and operated Organic Soil Builders, Inc. and owned Central Bowling Lanes of Minneapolis for many years. In 1960 he became a director of R. R. Howell Co., and in 1965 he was elected president and board chairman.

Roger is also survived by his wife of 61 years Betty of Madeira Beach, Fla. and Mound, Minn., three other sons, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, a sister, and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many many friends.

Funeral services will be held today (Thurs.) at St. John’s Lutheran, Mound, Minn. at 1 p.m., with visitation starting at 12 noon.

Mavis Mae Parker
Services were held earlier this week for Mavis Mae Parker. The St. Louis River Road resident lost her battle with cancer Sat., Feb. 23, 2002 in a Duluth hospice. She was 71.

She was born in Wrenshall, Minn. Mavis chose the career of wife and mother, until her death. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent a lot of her time enjoying the peaceful outdoors watching nature. She liked bowling, gardening and planning additional projects with her son. She was always up for a game of cards and always had the coffee on.

She was preceded in death by daughters Mae Marie in 1949 and Eva Louise Parker in 1973, her parents, and her husband Thomas in 1994.

She is survived by daughters Yvonne Elizabeth (Cecil) Woods of Willmar, Minn. and Debra Lee (Donn) Hedman of Munger, a son Thomas Reed (Joanne) Parker of Proctor, a sister Colleen (Tel) LaTour of Duluth, brothers Howard (Lois) Dunning of Duluth and Glen (Joy) Dunning of Georgia, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her fluffy companion, Sam the cat.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Lila Mae Weller
Lila Mae Weller, who was born in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School, died Sat., Feb. 23, 2002 in a Duluth Hospice. She was 74.

She was born Sept. 4, 1927 to Antone and Valborg (Peterson) Christianson. She retired from Dee-Independent Cleaners and Launderers. She was a member of the Superior Moose Lodge. Lila enjoyed quality time with her grandkids, and she loved jumping into her car “Streak” and going fishing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard John in 1973, and her brother Fred Christianson in 1991.

Survivors include her daughter Jody (Greg Jaeger) Weller of Duluth, her son Josh (Kathy) Weller of Duluth, grandchildren Ryan, JoDeen, Abby, and many close friends.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Howard F. Melde
Jim Melde of Proctor is saddened by the death of his brother, Howard F. Melde. He died Tues., Feb. 19, 2002 at the Chris Jensen Nursing Home. He was 86.

He was born in Duluth and attended West Junior and Denfeld High Schools and was a veteran of WW II serving in the European Theater. He belonged to VFW Post 2962 in Carlton, Minn. and served as Post Commander and Service Officer. He worked for the NP Railroad for 23 years, several railroads in the Chicago area and retired from the DMIR Railroad in 1976 as a carman.

He is also survived by three daughters, two sons, a sister, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a cousin, as well as many nieces, nephews and his special friends Margaret and Donald Eames of Esko, Minn.

Interment was in Park Hill Cemetery.

Military honors were accorded by VFW Post 2962 of Carlton, Minn.

Magnus Olson
A memorial service honoring Magnus Olson will be held Sat., Mar. 9 at 2 p.m. at Prospect Park Community Methodist Church, Mpls.

Magnus, who emigrated with his parents to Proctor in 1921, was Emeritus Professor of Zoology at the University of Minnesota. He died Mar. 2, 2002 of pulmonary failure. He was 92.

He was born June 29, 1909 in Sor Fron, Gudbrandsdal, Norway. His parents were Ole and Elen Olsen. Magnus graduated from Proctor High School in 1928, Duluth Jr. College in 1930 and St. Olaf College in 1932. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota in 1934 and 1936 and was a member of the University of Minnesota Zoology department staff from 1938 until his retirement in 1977. He was Head of the Department for ten years and was awarded the Horace Morse designation for Outstanding Teaching in 1976. Magnus was a Captain and preflight instructor in the U.S. Air Force from 1942-45.

Magnus is survived by his wife of 62 years Norma Moe Olson, daughter Ellen Rebecca (Michael) Stannard of Calif., son Stephen (Margaret Hals) of Norway, two granddaughters, and a great-granddaughter.

Magnus was a quiet, dignified, gentle man held in high regard by all who knew him and he was a man of many gifts—talented illustrator, card designer and water colorist, wood carver and furniture builder. He was an ardent fisherman, camper and skier.

The service is at University Avenue at Malcolm & Orlin S.E. Memorials to Coffman Condominiums or to the charity of your choice are welcome.
