Jeremy Mayfield
Oct. 17, 1982–Nov. 19, 2000

Jeremy Mayfield, 18-year-old son of Bob and Cindy Mayfield of Frazee, died Sunday, Nov. 19, from injuries received in an automobile-pedestrian accident near New York Mills.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at the Frazee High School, with the Rev. Larry Vosika officiating.
Interment was at the Canaan Fellowship Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes, with the Furey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Jeremy Beau Mayfield, son of Robert and Cindy Perrine Mayfield, was born at Detroit Lakes on Oct. 17, 1982.
He was a senior at Frazee High School, was elected as captain of the 2000-01 Frazee High School wrestling team and was a member of the wrestling team that was runner-up in the 2000 Minnesota Class A Tournament. He maintained perfect attendance in school.
During the summer months, Jeremy was employed at the Mickelson Turkey Farms of Frazee and, during the last two summers, had worked at BTD in Detroit Lakes.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting, shot a bear for the first time this year and also enjoyed horseback riding, snowmobiling and camping.
Surviving are his parents; a brother–James, at home; two sisters–Alisha (Casey) Johnson, Frazee, and Melissa, at home; his grandparents–Cal Sr. and Delores Mayfield and Nathan and Florence Perrine, all of Frazee, and his great-grandmother–Alvina Ellenberg, Detroit Lakes. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
A memorial fund has been established at the Bremer Bank in Detroit Lakes in his name.

William R. McNaughton
June 17, 1927–Nov. 19, 2000

William R. McNaughton, 74, died at his home in Detroit Lakes on Sunday, Nov. 19.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25, from Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Jerry Rogers officiating.
Interment will be at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Superior, Wis., with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
William Robert McNaughton, son of Raymond and Elizabeth McNaughton, was born June 17, 1927, in Superior, Wis.
He was raised and attended school at Superior and served with the U. S. Coast Guard.
During his working years, he was employed by a railroad, as a police officer and also by the City of Superior Sanitation Department.
He moved to Detroit Lakes in 1993.
Surviving are a son–William (Jackie) McNaughton, Superior, Wis.; three daughters–Bobbi (Jeff) Lormis, Rochert, and JoAnn (Steve) Maciejeski and Cindy McNaughton, both of Superior; three step-sons–Phillip (Debbie) Swonger, Tim Swonger and Otto Swonger, all of Detroit Lakes; a step-daughter–Sue (Gayle) Carlson, San Clemente, Calif., and two brothers–Raymond McNaughton and Dick DeClark, both of Superior. There are 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death was a son (Robert, who died in infancy).

Dianne K. Weaver
Jan. 3, 1960–Nov. 19, 2000

Dianne K. Weaver, 40, a resident of Detroit Lakes and formerly of Ponsford, died Sunday, Nov. 19, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo from injuries suffered in an automobile accident that happened at Mahnomen.
Services were at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22, from the Pine Point School in Ponsford.
Interment was at Breck Memorial Episcopal Cemetery in Ponsford, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Dianne Kaye Weaver, daughter of Leonard F. and Doris Basswood Weaver, was born Jan. 3, 1960, in White Earth.
She grew up in Ponsford, attended school in Ponsford and in Park Rapids and then lived in Minneapolis for a number of years.
She was employed at the R. D. Offut Co. in Park Rapids and, most recently, at the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen. She enjoyed softball and pool.
Surviving are two daughters–Billie Jo and Desiree Diane Weaver, both of Ponsford; a son–Bradley Jon Weaver, Ponsford; her mother–Doris Weaver, Ponsford; her grandmother–Anna Basswood, Ponsford; a special friend–Darrell Peake, Detroit Lakes; two sisters–Sandra (Ed) Smith, Ponsford, and Janelle M. Weaver, Detroit Lakes, and a brother–Michael P. Weaver, Fargo. There are numerous aunts and uncles.

Davis P. "Dave" Hurley
Feb. 23, 1927–Nov. 9, 2000

Davis P. "Dave" Hurley, 73, a native of Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, Nov. 9, at Bethel Park, Pa.
There was a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, from Ruthfred Lutheran Church in Bethel Park. The David J. Henney Funeral Home of Library, Pa., had charge of arrangements.
Davis P. Hurley, son of A. P. "Pat" and Louise Davis Hurley, was born at Detroit Lakes on Feb. 23, 1927.
He graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1944) and was a standout athlete in football and basketball.
Following high school graduation, he served with the U. S. Navy during World War II, then attended Luther College in Decorah, Ia., and later graduated from the University of Minnesota.
Mr. Hurley and Miriam E. Morr were married in Cedar Rapids, Ia.
He was employed as a manufacturer’s agent for Bethlehem Steel in Seattle, Wash., then was a purchasing agent for American Hoist and Derrick of St. Paul and then was self-employed as a factory representative for a number of companies.
Mr. Hurley never lost his love for the Detroit Lakes area and maintained a lifelong interest in Detroit Lakes High School athletics.
Surviving are his wife–Miriam, Bethel Park, Pa.; a son–Michael M. Pittsburgh, Pa.; two daughters–Susan L. Deakin, Bolder, England, and Melinda A. Bortle, Newbern, N. C., and a sister–Patricia Hurley, a resident at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
Memorials: Preferred to American Cancer Society.
Preceding her in death were her father (who died in 1988), a brother (Calvin D. Weaver), a sister (Leonora L. Weaver) and her grandparents (Fred and Mary Weaver and Albert Basswood Sr.)

Donald R. Zander
May 30, 1926–Nov. 11, 2000

Donald R. Zander, 74, a Detroit Lakes High School graduate who rose to the office of associate vice president for student affairs at the University of Minnesota, died in Minneapolis on Saturday, Nov. 11.
There was a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14, from Hope Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.
Donald R. Zander, son of Charles and Anne Zander, was born at Hankinson, N. D., on May 30, 1926.
He moved with his family to Pelican Rapids, then to Detroit Lakes, graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1944) and left for service with the U. S. Navy the day of his high school graduation.
During World War II, he was involved in intelligence work and served on the staff of Admiral Chester Nimitz.
Mr. Zander graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead in 1949 and later earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in educational psychology at the University of Minnesota.
He joined the staff at the University of Minnesota’s Student Activities Bureau in 1950, served as head of student unions and dean of students and retired in 1985 as associate vice president of student affairs.
Mr. Zander’s wife, the former Betty Jo Jackson of Columbus, Ohio, joined the University of Minnesota staff at the same time he did and they became engaged within four months of their meeting. They were married in 1951.
In his role as associate vice president for student affairs, Mr. Zander was in charge of 23 student services at the school
During his years on the University staff, he earned 14 awards as the staff member who was the major contributor to University life.
Following his retirement, a scholarship fund was set up in his name and a computer room at Centennial Hall, one of the student dormitories, was named Zander Computer Room. Freshman orientation camp at the University is known as Zander Weekend in his honor.
A fearless student advocate, he became well known for his role as a peace keeper between student protesters and law enforcement officers during the Vietnam War.
His interests included tennis and the Minnesota Vikings football team.
Surviving are his wife–Betty Jo; a son–David, Minneapolis; two daughters–Barbara Ann, Vermont, and Amy Karen, New York; his mother–Anne Zander, a resident at Emmanel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, and a brother–Carl, Rochester. There is one granddaughter.
Preceding him in death was his father.
Memorials: Preferred to Donald Zander Scholarship Fund.

Dorothy Martinson
Sept. 26, 1911–Nov. 22, 2000

Services were at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids for Dorothy Martinson.
Mrs. Martinson, 89, died at the Pelican Valley Nursing Home in Pelican Rapids on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
Rev. D. Josh Nelson officiated at the funeral.
Interment was at Hamar Lutheran Cemetery in Rothsay, with the Larson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Elizabeth Barringer, daughter of George and Elizabeth Dighton Barringer, was born at Dell Rapids, S. D., on Sept. 26, 1911.
She attended rural school near Rothsay, then lived at home and helped on the farm and–on Nov. 19, 1930–married Herman Martinson in Rothsay.
The Martinsons farmed near Rothsay from 1930-47, then lived on a farm east of Pelican Rapids until 1968 and then moved into town.
She was employed as a waitress at Swan Drug, at Rocky’s Resort on Star Lake and then worked at West Central Turkeys, Inc., in Pelican Rapids.
A member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid, she also belonged to the quilt club, the senior citizens, served as secretary-treasurer for the East Otter Tail Farm Bureau, was president of the Sunny Side Missionary Society at Dent and was an adult leader for the Dora Booster 4-H club. Mrs. Martinson received numerous pins and awards for her 4-H work and also was president of the District 166 PTA of Dora Township.
Surviving are three sons–Larry (Anita), Brainerd; Morris (Marlene), Detroit Lakes, and Marvin (Winnie), Pelican Rapids, and eight daughters–Delores (Don) Monson, Carol (Duane) Haiby and Connie (Vernon) Wifall, all Pelican Rapids; Elaine (Gordon) Sneva, Brainerd; Avis (John) Pearson, Moorhead; Judy (Lawrence) Grahn, Vergas; Marlene (Don) Matz, Perham, and Linda (LeRoy) Miller, Monticello. There are 32 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband (who died Aug. 14, 1988), two sons (Herbert and Donald), a daughter-in-law (Kathleen Martinson), two sisters (Margaret and Jane) and three brothers (Cyril, Dighton and Wilfred).
