Ted Larson
July 5, 1940–Nov. 28, 2000

Ted Larson, 60, well-known Moorhead State University film specialist, died at his home in Moorhead on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
Born at Fargo on July 5, 1940, he graduated as salutatorian at Glyndon High School (Class of 1958), earned a degree in speech/theatre and English at Moorhead State and taught six years at the Benjamin Franklin Junior High School in Fargo.
He then joined the Moorhead State staff, where he taught for 32 years.
Mr. Larson was best-known for his presentations of classical film festivals, seminars and movie series events at colleges, theatres and arts center
In 1998, he was honored as a Moorhead State Distinguished Alumni for his contributions to students and film studies.
Mr. Larson was a member of the Fargo Theatre board of directors for many years.
Surviving is a sister–Jean (Dave) Johnson, Monticello.
His parents preceded him in death.
The Wright Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Effie Christine Ritsche
Sept. 10, 1910–Nov. 26, 2000

Effie Christine Ritsche, 90, a lifelong Detroit Lakes area resident, died Sunday, Nov. 26, at St. Mary’s Nursing Home.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, from Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Jerry Rogers officiating.
Effie Christine Jenson, daughter of Anton and Synneva Vigeran Jenson, was born Sept. 10, 1910, in Holmesville Township of Becker County.
She attended schools in Detroit Lakes, graduated from Detroit Lakes High School and then graduated from Moorhead State with a bachelor’s degree. She also graduated from the Sherwood School of Music and Lewis Hotel training.
On July 3, 1939, Effie Jenson and Adolph Ritsche were married and they owned and operated Adolph’s Electric, the Ritsche Apartments and Madsen Grove Resort.
In connection with her business affairs, Mrs. Ritsche was active in the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce, served on the C-C retail committee and also belonged to the Minnesota Electric Association.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, belonged to the Christian Mother’s Society, the Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters (WCOF) and the Catholic Daughters. She served in numerous offices in the WCOF.
In addition, she belonged to the Business and Professional Women’s Club (BPWC), where she was recording secretary and a member of the board of directors, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 1676, where she was senior vice president, color bearer and treasurer. Mrs. Ritsche also belonged to the Detroit Lakes Library Club, the Detroit Lakes Area Retired Education Association and the Detroit Lakes Eagles Auxiliary.
For 22 years, she taught school, first in rural schools in the Detroit Lakes area and then in the Frazee-Vergas District, where she taught music and SLBP.
Upon retiring, she continued to serve as a substitute teacher in area schools.
An avid writer and painter, she published numerous books and poetry and received the Golden Poet award for a poem entitled "The Blizzard." She received an honorable mention for songwriting at the Music City Song Festival, was published in The Potpourri of Cookery and her poetry also was published in New Voices in America.
Surviving are a daughter–Marguerite "Maggie" Ritsche, Detroit Lakes, and a son–Byron Ritsche, Detroit Lakes. There is one grandson and a great-granddaughter.
Preceding Mrs. Ritsche in death were her husband, five brothers and four sisters.
Visitation: Wednesday, Nov. 29, 4-8 p.m., David-Donehower Funeral Home, with Catholic Daughters rosary at 7 and parish prayers at 7:30. Also one hour prior to funeral.

Ruth Kusserow Barnard
Oct. 11, 1934–Nov. 23, 2000

Ruth Kusserow Barnard, 66, died Thursday, Nov. 23, at her home in Dilworth.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, from the Community Alliance Church in Detroit Lakes.
Officiating at the service will be Rev. David Sohl and Rev. Charles Nethercott.
Ruth Estrin, daughter of Oscar and Hilma Nelson Estrin, was born at Dale (near Hawley) on Oct. 11, 1934.
She attended rural school near her home and also attended Prairie Bible Institute in Canada.
Following school, she lived and worked in Moorhead and married Kenneth Kusserow. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1958 and, over the years, she worked at the Graystone Hotel, the Northside, the Erie 34 Club, the Erie Jr. (for 14 years) and at the Detroit Lakes Elks Club.
Mr. Kusserow died in 1985 and she later married Donald Barnard.
They owned and operated Ruth and Don’s Bait Shop; in Shoreham for seven years and then lived at Sauer Lake and at the Mountain View Apartments before moving to Dilworth. They wintered in Arizona.
Surviving are her husband; two sons–Terry (Shelli) Kusserow, Loveland, Colo., and Ralph (Julie) Kusserow, Harris; two daughters–Debbie (Gary) Dierke, West St. Paul, and Valerie (James) Voigt, Detroit Lakes; two step-sons–Ken Jr. Kusserow Eide and Steve Kusserow; two step-daughters–Sharon Kusserow McHugh and Nancy Kusserow Wescott; three step-sons and three step-daughters from her husband Don; a brother–Alvin "Benny" Estrin, St. Paul, and four sisters–Evelyn Fureby, Moorhead; Pearl Rud, Clifford, N. D.; Margaret Estrin, Hemet, Calif., and Vi (Chris) Rozikes, White Bear Lake. There are 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Barnard also was preceded in death by a brother–Oscar "Gordy" Estrin.

John P. Werner
Dec. 21, 1967–Nov. 22, 2000

Services were at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes for John P. Werner.
Mr. Werner, 32, died at his home in Detroit Lakes on Wednesday, Nov. 22.
Rev. Ken Vollmers officiated at the funeral.
Interment was at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
John P. Werner, son of Arnold Lee and Kathleen Werner Herald, was born at Sacramento, Calif., on Dec. 21, 1967.
During his early years, he lived in Sacramento and Anchorage, Alaska, and he graduated from high school in Grand Forks, N. D.
Following high school graduation, he returned to Sacramento and married Carol Van Fossen on Dec. 30, 1989.
They lived in Sacramento until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1993.
Mr. Werner attended the Northwest Technical College and was employed as a transportation generalist senior with the survey department of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) for four years.
Surviving are his wife–Carol; three daughters–Kayla Ann, Krystal and Kellie Ann, all at home; his father–Arnold Lee Herald, Newport, Ky., and his mother–Kathleen Herald, Detroit Lakes.
Preceding him in death was a brother (Kelly Herald).

Hazel Iona West
Dec. 2, 1917–Nov. 25, 2000

Hazel Iona West, 82, Menahga, died Saturday, Nov. 25, at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga.
The funeral was at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28, from First English Lutheran Church in Menahga.
Rev. Clyde Allebach and Rev. Roger Olson officiated at the funeral and Lonnie Schmidt was the organist and soloist. Special music was by Ann West and Dave Haaversen.
Interment was at the Menahga City Cemetery, with the Cardini-Behrens Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Craig West, Scott Lusti, Dave Lusti, Brad Lusti, Ryan West and Jeff Etter.
Hazel Stephens, daughter of Bryce and Mabel Witter Stephens, was born at Ponsford on Dec. 2, 1917.
Surviving are two daughters–Collen (Jerry) Lage, Stillwater, Okla., and Sharleen Lindquist, Menahga; five sons–David (Linda) West and Stephen (Char) West, both of Menahga; Douglas West, Wadena; Russell (Linda) West, Ennis, Mont., and Tom (Cathy) Monson, Sebeka; two sisters–Harriet Enfield, Park Rapids, and DeLores (Vic) Molander, Vancouver, Wash., and a brother–Harold (Helen) Stephens, Woodland, Wash. There are 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Preceding Mrs. West in death were her parents, her husband, a daughter, a sister and three brothers.

RoseMarie Aleshire
Oct. 20, 1931–Nov. 13, 2000

RoseMarie Aleshire 69, died Monday, Nov. 13, at the Franciscan Health Center in Duluth, where she had resided since 1998.
The funeral was at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Duluth, with Fr. Bill Fournier officiating.
Interment was at Sun Rise Memorial at Hermantown, with the Bell Brothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
RoseMarie Ginter, daughter of Walter and Rose Piotrowski Ginter, was born at North Prairie on Oct. 20, 1931.
She grew up in the North Prairie area and married Joyce G. Aleshire on Dec. 27, 1950.
A longtime teacher, she taught at Hutchinson, Kent, Royalton and Little Falls. She later earned a degree in special education at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and then taught in the Hermantown Public Schools.
Her marriage was dissolved in 1975, she retired from teaching in 1987 and then owned and operated a general store in Proctor.
A member of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, she traveled throughout the United States and had a love of geography and politics.
Surviving are seven children–Cynthia (Tom Laiti) Greske, Bennett (Susan) Aleshire and Roger (Jennie) Aleshire, all of Duluth; Marcia (Mel) Lovejoy, Apple Valley; Karen Aleshire-Dagel (Dan), Sturgeon Lake; Kevin (Lynn) Aleshire Anchorage, and Peter Aleshire, St. Paul; three sisters–Beverly (Lee) Nouis, Little Falls; Claudette (Earl) Prater, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Judy (Frank) DeZurik, Blue Springs, Mo., and four brothers–Edward (Alice) Ginter, Vista, Calif.; Jim Ginter, Minneapolis; Louis (Dorothy) Ginter, Little Falls, and Ralph Ginter, Bloomington. There are 14 grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and a special friend–Ray Paulson. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her former husband, a son (Bruce, who died in infancy), two sisters (Emily "Jean" Jerde and Jeanette Brokob and three brothers (Duane, Carl and George).

LeRoy B. Haugen
April 4, 1925–Nov. 27, 2000

LeRoy B. Haugen, 75, a lifelong Lake Park area resident, died Monday, Nov. 27, in Fargo.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, from the Lake Park Lutheran Church.
Interment will be at the church Cemetery, with the Vigen-Wright Funeral Home of Lake Park in charge of arrangements.
LeRoy B. Haugen, son of Arthur and Mabel Haugen, was born at Lake Park on April 4, 1975, grew up on a farm near Lake Park, graduated (with honors) from Lake Park High School and married Janice Bergeson in 1950.
He farmed the home farm for 20 years, worked as a mechanic for the Nelson Road Construction Co. for 50 years and taught diesel mechanics at the Detroit Lakes Area Vocational Technical Institute for 10 years.
A member of Lake Park Lutheran Church, he served on the church council, on the call committee, on the property committee and belonged to the men’s club.
Surviving are his wife–Janice, Lake Park; a sister–Laverne Nelson, Lake Park, and three children–Burton (Rollie) Haugen, Walker; Becky (Owen) Thompson, Pelican Rapids, and Joel (Deb) Haugen, Moorhead. There are nine grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother (Wesley) and a son (Jeffrey).
Visitation: Friday, Dec. 1, 5-7 p. m., Vigen-Wright Funeral Home in Lake Park, with a prayer service at 7. Also one hour prior to funeral at the church.
