Bernice Hartmann
April 8, 1927–Nov. 26, 2000

Bernice Hartmann, 73, died Sunday, Nov. 26, at her home in Waubun.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, from St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Waubun.
Fr. Ron Meyer, O. M. I., will officiate at the funeral and music will be by Lea Stech.
Interment will be at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery, with the Anderson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Jeremy Speldrich, Jacob Speldrich, Brian Thompson, Nathan Thompson, Brandon Hartmann and David Hartmann.
Friends and neighbors will be honorary pallbearers.
Bernice Irene Hindermann, daughter of Harry and Clara Hogan Hindermann, was born April 8, 1927, on a farm in Nicollet County (near New Ulm).
She grew up and attended school in that area and, as a young woman, moved into New Ulm, where she was employed as a housekeeper.
On April 20, 1948, she and Howard Hartmann were married at New Ulm and farmed in the area until moving to Waubun in 1952, where they have lived since.
Mrs. Hartmann was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, of the Parish Aid Society and enjoyed baking, quilting, playing cards, travel, fishing and gardening.
Surviving are her husband–Howard, Waubun; two sons–Martin (Gayle), Walker, and Allen (Belva), Homedale, Idaho; two daughters–Rose (Robert) Speldrich, Climax, and Minnie (DuWayne) Thompson, Crookston; a brother–Alfred, Deerwood, and a sister–Alice Marstone, Hanska. There are 13 grandchildren and one great-granchild.
Preceding Mrs. Hartmann in death were her parents, a daughter (Molly) and a grandson.
Visitation: Wednesday, Nov. 29, 4-7 p.m., Anderson Funeral Home in Mahnomen, with a prayer service at 7. Also one hour prior to funeral at St. Ann’s Catholic Church.

John H. Howard
June 24, 1926–Dec. 5, 2000
Services were at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, from the Roselawn Cemetery Chapel in Roseville for John H. Howard.
Mr. Howard, 74, died at the Frazee Care Center on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
Rev. Bill Wilson officiated at the funeral.
Interment was at Roselawn Cemetery, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
John Harold Howard, son of E. Lee and Viva Wamboldt Harrington Howard, was born at St. Paul on June 24, 1926.
He was raised and attended school in St. Paul, served with the U. S. Navy during World War II and returned to St. Paul after receiving his discharge and helped his brother operate their father’s monument company and tool and die trade.
He moved with his family to Arizona in 1971 and then to Mountain Home, Ark., in 1980. He spent the summers in Minnesota and then lived near a son and two sisters shortly prior to his death.
Surviving are a special friend–Gladys Bragg, Arkansas; three sons–LeRoy, Detroit Lakes; Robert (Julie), Arkansas, and John, formerly of St. Paul, and two sisters–Viva Thomas, St. Paul, and Ann Johnson, Detroit Lakes. A granddaughter also survives.
Preceding Mr. Howard in death were his parents, two brothers (Lewis and Lee) and two sisters (Elnora Bissonette and Jane Despen).

Edward Austin
Edward Austin, 78, Detroit Lakes, died Thursday, Dec. 7, at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center.
The David-Donehower Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Morace Eugene Stephens
Aug. 12, 1916–Nov. 30, 2000
Morace Eugene Stephens, 84, a lifetime resident of the Ponsford area, died at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes on Thursday, Nov. 30.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, from the Jones-Pearson Chapel in Park Rapids.
Rev. Ted Barthels officiated at the funeral and Mark Tretbar was the organist.
Interment was at Linnell Cemetery at Ponsford, with the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were John L. Spalding, Michael M. Spalding, Timothy D. Spalding, Randy J. Peterson, Bernie A. Gartner and Joel T. Hebert.
Robin Hebert, Rhonda Gartner and nieces and nephews were honorary pallbearers.
Morace Eugene Stephens, son of Martin and Hazel Anderson Stephens, was born Aug. 12, 1916, in Park Rapids, grew up in the Ponsford area and attended the Linnell School.
He began a career in truck driving and–on Nov. 13, 1936–married Hazel Irene Graham in Park Rapids.
Mr. Stephens joined the Becker County Highway Department in 1949 and worked in maintaining county roads for 27 years.
A longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Ponsford, he served as an elder, trustee and treasurer, as well as carrying out other duties.
He was a charter member of the Carsonville Volunteer Fire Department, served as Carsonville Township assessor and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. Mr. Stephens also enjoyed to travel.
Surviving are his wife–Hazel, Ponsford; two daughters–Darlene Spalding, Osage, and Diane (Rob) Bauman, Nevis, and two sisters–Gladys (John) Wettels, Ponsford, and Doris (Henry) Skidmore, Mendon, Utah. There are six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Mr. Stephens in death were his parents, a sister (Ruby) and two brothers (James and another who died in infancy).

Barbara A. Garaas
May 8, 1928–Dec. 3, 2000
Services were at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, from First Lutheran Church in Fargo for Barbara A. Garaas.
Mrs. Garaas, 72, died at St. Mary’s Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes on Sunday, Dec. 3.
Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Fargo, with the Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Barbara Ann Thomson, daughter of James and Irene Sondrol Thomson, was born at Turtle Lake, N. D., on May 8, 1928.
She graduated from Turtle Lake High School (Class of 1946), attended the University of North Dakota and married John O. Garaas in Turtle Lake on June 13, 1947.
Mrs. Garaas enjoyed playing cards and reading.
Surviving are two sons–Jonathan T. (Jill) Garaas and David (Elizabeth) Garaas, both Fargo; a daughter–Barbara Susan Garaas, Fargo, and a sister–Beverly (John) Dechon, Louisiana. There are nine grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband (who died in 1997) and a son (Barry James Garaas, who died in 1975).
Memorials: Preferred to Leukemia Society of America.

Hazel H. Earley
Oct. 8, 1900–Dec. 1, 2000
Hazel H. Earley, 100, died Friday, Dec. 1, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, where she had resided since 1992.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, from Community Alliance Church in Detroit Lakes.
Rev. David Sohl officiated at the funeral, Carol Accosta was the organist and the soloist was Roland Sandman.
Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Gary Ask, Conrad Ohm, Glen Nansen, Gerald Cook and Kenneth Anderson.
Hazel Swetland, daughter of Charles and Margaret Wallace Swetland, was born in Dunn Township of Otter Tail County on Oct. 8, 1900.
She grew up and attended school at rural Vergas, married Mortimer Earley at Detroit Lakes on Oct. 27, 1925, and they farmed at rural Vergas. Mr. Earley died in 1992 and she moved to Emmanuel shortly after his death.
Mrs. Earley enjoyed cooking, baking and crocheting.
Surviving are two daughters–Fern (Robert) Anderson, Detroit Lakes, and Ruby Holt, Vergas There is one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she also was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers (William, John, George and Seth) and four sisters (Mary Swetland, Cynthia Craft, Cora Earley and Maud Haskins).

Leonard M. "Len" Vierzba
July 9, 1924–Dec. 2, 2000
Leonard M. "Len" Vierzba, 76, a retired sergeant with the Minnesota State Patrol, died Saturday, Dec. 2, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, from Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes.
Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Leonard Michael Vierzba, son of Michael L. and Anna L. Matzko Vierzba, was born at Brainerd on July 9, 1924, grew up there, graduated from Brainerd High School and then enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II.
Mr. Vierzba and Ethel Hofmann were married at Crosby on Feb. 1, 1945.
Following his discharge from the armed forces, he was employed with the Northern Pacific Railway Co. until joining the State Patrol (then the Minnesota Highway Patrol) in 1955. He served as a trooper and then as station sergeant until retiring in 1980.
Mr. Vierzba received the Trooper of the Year award and also was cited for bravery with the State Patrol.
He and his wife operated Custom Draperies from 1970-77.
A member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, he belonged to John Bridges Post No. 15 of The American Legion and to Jess-Omundson Post No. 1676 of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He also served on the Becker County Variance Board, served as a supervisor in Detroit Township, served as American Legion school patrol coordinator and was a volunteer in Meals on Wheels.
Surviving are two daughters–Sheri (Dan) Berg, Detroit Lakes, and Peggy Garrison, Fargo; two sons–Richard C. Vierzba, Kalispell, Mont., and Col. Tom (Traci) Vierzba, Monument, Colo., and four sisters–Lorraine Peterson, Gerry (Marvin) Winson and Ellen Smith, all of Brainerd, and Donna (Bob) Brown, Baxter. There are 15 grandchildren. Preceding Mr. Vierzba in death were his wife (who died Nov. 6, 1997), his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Visitation: Wednesday, Dec. 6, 4-8 p.m., Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 and parish prayers at 7:30. Also one hour prior to service on Thursday.
