Eunice Fernholz
Aug. 10, 1927–Dec. 15, 2000
Eunice Fernholz, a retired teacher at Holy Rosary School in Detroit Lakes, died at St. Mary’s Nursing Center on Friday, Dec. 15.
The funeral was at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, from Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Jerry Rogers officiating.
There was a graveside service at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Bridget’s Cemetery in DeGraff, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Isaac Johnson, Adam Johnson, Randy Johnson, Nick Fernholz, Ed Willman and Ken Nagel.
Grandchildren were the honorary pallbearers.
Eunice Charlotte Matter, daughter of Louis and Charlotte Kagel Matter, was born at Redwood City on Aug. 10, 1927.
She moved with her family to DeGraff in 1939, graduated from Benson High School (Class of 1945) and attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul (1945-47).
On Dec. 30, 1947, Eunice Matter and Merlin Fernholz were married in DeGraff.
They purchased the Fairyland Cottages in Detroit Lakes in 1963 and operated the business until 1994.
Mrs. Fernholz earned a bachelor’s degree from Moorhead State University and taught second grade at Holy Rosary School in Detroit Lakes until 1990.
Active in the MCCL and the Democratic Party, she served as Becker County DFL chairperson for seven years. Mrs. Fernholz enjoyed dancing, playing cards, making puzzles, quilting and working on photograph albums and genealogy.
Surviving are her husband; two sons–David (Lee), Colorado Springs, Colo., and John (Betsy), Moorhead; three daughters–Suzanne (Ed) Willman, Cottonwood; Theresa (Ken) Nagel, Prince Frederick, Md., and Mary (Randy) Johnson, Moorhead; a brother–Louis Matter, DeGraff, and a sister–Doris Diederich, Benson. There are 15 grandchildren.
Her parents and a brother (Arion) preceded her in death.

Clayton H. Abel
Aug. 3, 1922–Dec. 16, 2000
Clayton H. Abel, 78, died Saturday, Dec. 16, at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21, from the Lake Eunice Evangelical Free Church south of Audubon, with Rev. Dale Robins officiating.
Interment will be at the church Cemetery, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Clayton Howard Abel, son of Bert and Amanda Ganz Abel, was born Aug. 3, 1922, at Leonard, N. D.
He moved with his family to rural Vergas in 1931, graduated from Pelican Rapids High School (Class of 1942) and served with the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Abel and Vonna M. Kromer were married in Las Vegas, Nev., in 1945.
Upon receiving his discharge from the armed forces, they moved to Minneapolis.
On June 17, 1959, Mr. Abel and Margaret Stamper were married in Veblin, S. D., and moved to rural Audubon in 1976.
A carpenter for over 40 years, Mr. Abel also was the caretaker for two handicapped children.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and cooking.
Surviving are two sons–Wayne (Sally), Aloha, Ore., and Clayton II (Sue), Pelican Rapids; three daughters–Donna (Bob) Krejce, Darlene (Dan) Clark and Dawn Bergh, all of Detroit Lakes; three sisters–Bernice Johnson, Pelican Rapids; Jean Pederson, Barnesville, and Nellie Holm, Ulen, and two brothers–Clifton (Helen), Waite Park, and Marshall Stanley, Kenwick, West Va. There are 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Abel in death were his wife Margaret (who died in 1998), a daughter (Denise), his parents, five sisters and a brother.
Visitation: Wednesday, Dec. 20, 4-8 p.m., David-Donehower Funeral Home. Also one hour prior to funeral at Lake Eunice Evangelical Free Church.

Ruth C. Ranstrom
March 3, 1912–Dec. 16, 2000
Ruth C. Ranstrom, 88, died at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes on Saturday, Dec. 16.
The funeral was Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Emmanuel Chapel, with chaplain Vicki Marthaler officiating.
The pallbearers were Bonnie Tweed, Joy Polesak, Dean Ranstrom, Cindy Vilks, Cheri Skalicky, Lane Schlagel, Bryan Harris, Gina Kinney, Vicki Ernst, Lyle Ranstrom, Brad Harris and Ginger Nesbit.
Ruth C. Larson, daughter of Charles and Anna Faller Larson, was born at Warren on March 3, 1912.
She moved with her family to Mississippi at the age of six and the family moved to Argyle in 1931.
On March 1, 1933, Ruth Larson and Henning Ranstrom were married in Crookston.
They lived at Warren until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1951. They moved to Minneapolis in 1962 and returned to Detroit Lakes in 1972.
Surviving are: two sons, Grant (Ramona), Robbinsdale, and Lowell (Donna), Audubon; two daughters, Ruth Ann Ranstrom (Edward Gehrke) and Gaye (Gary) Harris, both Detroit Lakes; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ranstrom was preceded in death by her husband (who died in 1994), her parents and 10 brothers and sisters.

Alice Hanson
Sept. 22, 1914–Dec. 17, 2000
Alice Hanson, 86, died at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes on Sunday, Dec. 17.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 20, from the Vigen-Wright Chapel in Lake Park.
Rev. Philip Johnson officiated at the funeral, Audrey Savig was the organist and the vocalist was Clint Felker.
Serving as the pallbearers were Darin Sellers, Kevin Sellers, Jason Sellers, Curt Rislund, Orville Dow and Herb Wallace.
The Vigen-Wright Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Alice Anderson, daughter of Anton and Olga Olson Anderson, was born Sept. 22, 1914, in Lake Park.
She graduated from Lake Park High School and married Roy Sellers in Portland, Ore., in 1941.
They lived in Lake Park following their marriage and Mrs. Sellers was employed at the Lake Park Lefse Factory and at Swift & Co. in Detroit Lakes.
Mr. Sellers died in 1966 and she and Obert Hanson were married in 1968 at Sisseton, S. D.
They lived at Lake Park, Mr. Hanson died in 1977 and she continued to live in Lake Park after his death.
Surviving are two sons–Vernon (Sue) Sellers, Moorhead, and Allen (Joyce) Sellers, Detroit Lakes, and a brother–Theron Anderson, Fargo. There are four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

J. Mervin “Spud” Anderson
March 26, 1918–Dec. 17, 2000
J. Mervin “Spud” Anderson, who played trumpet in a number of bands for many years, died at Emmanuel Nursing Home on Sunday, Dec. 17. He was 82.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 22, from the Emmanuel Nursing Home Chapel.
Vicki Marthaler, chaplain at Emmanuel, will officiate at the funeral and also will be the pianist. Bill Sanger will play the trumpet.
Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Nate Anderson, Zach Anderson, Jamin Anderson, Jim Wood, Lee Daily and Joe Poppenhagen.
J. Mervin Anderson, son of John and Mary Thorvaldson Anderson, was born at Detroit Lakes on March 26, 1918, grew up in Detroit Lakes and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1936).
Mr. Anderson and Adeline Hedstrom were married at Grand Island, Nebr., on April 6, 1942.
While living in Grand Island, he played with the Lee Barron and the Jimmy Barnett orchestras and they then returned to Detroit Lakes and he played with the Wit Thoma Orchestra.
The Hedstroms moved to Luverne in 1955, where he played with the Jimmy Thomas Orchestra, and returned to Detroit Lakes in 1958. Upon their return, Mr. Anderson played with local bands, such as the Irv Lester Orchestra at the Erie 34 for a number of years.
He also worked at the Detroit Lakes Granite Works until retiring in 1982. Upon retiring, he lived in Frazee before entering Emmanuel Nursing Home in September, 1999.
Surviving are two sons–Ronald (Mary), New London, and Bradley (Karen), Moorhead, and two sisters–Mabel Johnson, Detroit Lakes, and Adeline Huston, Albuquerque, N. M. There are eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Anderson in death were his wife (who died in 1972), his parents and four sisters (Alma Olson, Alice Johnson, Klara Poppenhagen and Hazel Wilson).
Visitation: One hour prior to funeral at Emmanuel Nursing Home.

Alf Brosten
May 24, 1923–Dec. 10, 2000
Alf Brosten, 77, a former Detroit Lakes resident, died Sunday, Dec. 10, at his home in Great Falls, Mont.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14, from Redeemer Lutheran Church in Great Falls.
Alf Brosten was born in Cooperstown, N. D., on May 24, 1923, and grew up and attended school in Detroit Lakes. He graduated from Detroit Lakes High School with the Class of 1942.
On June 7, 1949, he and Valborg Erickson were married. They farmed near Detroit Lakes until moving to Great Falls in 1954.
Mr. Brosten was employed as a bricklayer for the Anaconda Co., then as a boilermaker and later as a layout man until the firm closed its smelter operations.
He also worked for the Great Falls Ironworks.
A member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, he sang in the men’s choir, the gospel quartet and the church choir and also taught Sunday School and served on the church council.
Mr. Brosten also served as vice president and treasurer of the Boilermakers Union.
He enjoyed tailoring, gardening, furniture upholstery, hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his wife–Valborg, Great Falls; a daughter–Laurie Carlson, Helena, Mont.; four sons–Joel Brosten, Great Falls; David Brosten, Anacoretes, Wash.; Randy Brosten, Helena, and Kevin Brosten, Salt Lake City, Utah, and two sisters–Alice Loge, Litchville, N. D., and Sylvia Aker, Hillsboro, N. D. There are nine grandchildren.
