Gordon L. Johnson
March 28, 1928–Dec. 20, 2000
Gordon L. Johnson, 72, a Hawley area resident, died at Dakota-Heartland Hospital in Fargo on Wednesday, Dec. 20.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, from Eksjo Lutheran Church west of Lake Park.
Rev. David Hurtt officiated at the funeral, Mercedes Roos was the organist and the vocalist was Tim Severinson.
Interment was at the Eksjo Cemetery, with the Vigen-Wright Funeral Home of Hawley in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Curtis Erickson, Marvin Erickson, Marlyn Beaudine, Lester Olson, Gaylan Sahlberg and Steve Schenck.
Gordon L. Johnson, son of Charles B. and Tilda M. Nelson Johnson, was born at Dale on March 28, 1928.
He grew up near Dale, attended School District No. 41 and farmed on the home farm.
He and Marlene Erickson were married at Lake Park on Sept. 11, 1954.
They moved to Minneapolis in 1964, where Mr. Johnson was employed with Tel-E-Lect, Inc., and moved back to the family farm in 1966. He farmed until 1977 and then worked as a laborer until retiring in 1997.
Surviving are his wife–Marlene, Hawley; a son–Keith (Jane) Johnson, Rochester; two daughters–Kari (Steve) Schenck, and Kaye (Gaylan) Sahlberg, both of Hawley, and a sister–Lillian Marsh, Portland, Ore. There are four grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were a daughter (Christine), two brothers (Orlo and Charles) and a half-sister (Carol DuFault).
Marjery Meyers
May 22, 1908–Dec. 19, 2000
Marjery Meyers, 92, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Sunnyside Nursing Home east of Lake Park, where she had resided since last July.
There was a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, from the Vigen-Wright Chapel in Lake Park.
Rev. Philip Johnson officiated at the service, Leona Frisk was the organist and the soloist was August Frisk.
The Vigen-Wright Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Marjery White was born May 22, 1908, in London, England, where she grew up and attended school.
She moved to Australia in 1927 and married Phillip D. Warwick in Australia in 1946. They later moved to Arizona and Mr. Warwick died in 1978.
She and Walter Meyers were married at Las Vegas, Nev., in 1981.
They lived in Arizona during the winter months and spent the summers on a farm near Lake Park.
Mrs. Meyers moved into Hawley Manor in 1996.
Surviving are her husband–Walter Meyers, Hawley; two daughters–Dursley Phillips and Betty Hitchenis, both of Australia; a step-son–Gary Meyers, Detroit Lakes, and a step-daughter–Sophie (James) Wamre, Moorhead. There are 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Esther M. Butcher
June 25, 1951–Dec. 18, 2000
Services were at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, from the Christian Fellowship Church in Detroit Lakes for Esther M. Butcher.
Esther Butcher, 49, died at Methodist Hospital in Rochester on Monday, Dec. 18.
Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in White Earth, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Esther Marie “E” Butcher, daughter of Arthur and Susan Ah-Be-Daush Butcher, was born at White Earth on June 25, 1951.
She grew up at Ponsford, attended school at Pine Point and at Park Rapids High School and then took chef’s training for a year at the Detroit Lakes Area Vocational Technical Institute.
She later worked at a nursing home in Park Rapids for two years and then lived in Frazee for two years before moving to Minneapolis.
Esther worked as a cook and as a teacher’s aide for the Head Start program in the Pine Point School and was instrumental in organizing and teaching a Sunday School class.
She attended the Central Indian Bible College in Mobridge, S. D., for four years and lived there until 1992 when she returned to Minneapolis.
In 1996 she moved to Detroit Lakes and then moved to White Earth.
A member of the Assembly of God Church in White Earth, she enjoyed sewing, singing and photography.
Surviving are her mother–Susan Butcher, White Earth; a daughter–Karen Butcher, Alexandria; a son–Howard Butcher, White Earth; three sisters–Rose (Jerry) Koerner, Litchfield, and Edith Riggle and Eileen Butcher, both of Detroit Lakes, and four brothers–LaVerne Butcher, Minneapolis; Arthur Butcher Jr., Ponsford; Thomas Butcher, St. Paul, and Walter Butcher, White Earth. There are many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was her father, who died in 1984.
Kathleen M. Hilber
Aug. 23, 1921–Dec. 19, 2000
Kathleen M. Hilber, 79, a resident of Bethany Homes in Fargo since 1998, died there on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
The funeral was at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, from St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery in Fargo, with the Boulger Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Kathleen Marie Thompson was born at Tolna, N. D., on Aug. 23, 1921, and moved to Casselton, N. D., as a young girl..
She was active in drama and music at Casselton High School, graduated from the school in 1939 and then graduated from the Fargo Business College.
On Sept. 11, 1942, Kathleen Thompson and Robert James Hilber were married in Seattle, Wash.
She worked for Tidewater Associated Oil in Seattle and the couple later lived in Norman, Okla., before returning to Fargo in 1944.
Mrs. Hilber was active in the election board, PTA, served as president of the local and state chapters of the Catholic War Veterans, volunteered at the Veterans Administration for 16 years and was honored as the Volunteer of the Year.
She served as president of the Fargo Eagles Auxiliary, was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary Ritual Team for 13 years and was active in the Senior City Kitchen Band.
She won the honor of Homemaker of the Day in 1961.
Surviving are her husband–Robert; a brother–Roy (Shirley) Thompson, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and four children–Gary (Robin) Hilber, Columbus, Ind.; Michael (Julie) Hilber and Shari Cannon, both Detroit Lakes, and Shannon (Bob) Klein, Fargo. There are 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Alfred E. Halverson
Feb. 18, 1914–Dec. 20, 2000
Alfred E. Halverson, 86, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, from the Faith Free Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes.
Rev. Paul Larson officiated at the funeral and the musicians were Laurelyn Faszholz, Debbie Johnson and Jan Hansen.
Interment was at the Cormorant Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lake Park, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Men at Faith Free Lutheran Church were honorary pallbearers.
Alfred E. Halverson, son of Alfred and Amelia Backman Halverson, was born Feb. 18, 1914, at Dale.
He grew up and attended school at Dale and married Edna Olson in 1940.
The Halversons spent 45 years in the Saginaw-Detroit, Mich., area.
During World War II, Mr. Halverson was employed by the Timkin-Axel Co. and then sold automobiles and was a real estate broker.
During retirement, he volunteered for the Salvation Army and the Saginaw Rescue Mission.
The Halversons moved to Lake Park in 1988, Mrs. Halverson entered Sunnyside Nursing Home and lived there until she died.
On Aug. 25, 1990, Mr. Halverson and Lorraine Lindstrom were married at rural Lake Park.
They lived at Lake Park a short time, then moved to Detroit Lakes and became members of Faith Free Lutheran Church.They ministered at area nursing homes with their music and singing.
Surviving are his wife–Lorraine, Detroit Lakes; two daughters–Bonnie (Ron) Backer, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Sharon (Bob) Grunow, Kokomo, Ind.; three step-children–Richard (Becky) Lindstrom, Audubon; Roxanne (Ron) Samuelson, Lake Park, and Becky (Tom) Sorvik, Fargo, and a sister–Gladys Mattson, Beulah, N. D. There are five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, four step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, Mr. Halverson also was preceded in death by his parents.
Janice C. Agamenoni
Nov. 8, 1906–Dec. 25, 2000
Janice C. Agamenoni, 94, formerly of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, Dec. 25, at the Great Falls, Mont., Hospital.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, from Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Great Falls.
There will be a private interment at Highland Cemetery in Great Falls, with the O’Connor Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Janice Johnson was born Nov. 8, 1906, in Virginia, grew up there and graduated from Virginia High School. Following high school graduation, she attended St. Olaf College in Northfield and later received a teaching degree from Duluth State Teachers College.
On Dec. 7, 1929, she and Renado T. Agamenoni were married in Virginia.
They moved to Detroit Lakes, where Mr. Agamenoni was in the hardware business, and then moved to Minneapolis, to Sioux Falls, S. D., and then back to Detroit Lakes. They moved to Great Falls several years ago.
A lifetime member of First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, she also belonged to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Great Falls and was active in church work, Parent-Teachers Association and Girl Scouts.
Mrs. Agamenoni enjoyed writing and produced several plays and skits.
Surviving are a son–Tom, Great Falls, Mont., six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Preceding her in death were her husband (who died in 1988) and a daughter.
