Ilton Sylevester Thorpe
Jan. 22, 1919–Dec. 26, 2000
Ilton Sylvester Thorpe, 81, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home, where he had resided the past several years.
The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, from First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen.
Rev. Ivan Wambheim officiated at the funeral, Dorothy Goos was the organist and the soloist was Marvin Slette.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the Anderson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Ben Lecy, Nick Lecy, Jon Lecy, Darin Thorpe, Ken Crane, Josh Thorpe, Cory Thorpe, Vic Peterson and Ken Riegert.
Ilton Thorpe, son of Simon and Ida Lien Thorpe, was born at Twin Valley on Jan. 22, 1919, and graduated from Twin Valley High School (Class of 1937).
On Dec. 11, 1941, Mr. Thorpe and Helen Kroshus were married at Ada.
They bought a farm at Mahnomen in 1951, continued farming until retiring in 1987 and then bought a home in Mahnomen and moved there in 1996.
A member of First Lutheran Church, Mr. Thorpe served on the church board. He also served on the board of the Red River Valley Development Association and the Pembina Township board.
In addition, he served on the board of the Mahnomen Elevator and the Mahnomen County Fair, was on the board of the Regional Commission, the Mahube board and the Township Association board.
Mr. Thorpe enjoyed fishing, woodworking and playing the organ and was an avid sports fan, having participated in football and basketball in high school.
Surviving are his wife–Helen, Mahnomen; two sons–Ilton Jr. (Carol) and Jerry (Kathy), both of Mahnomen, and a daughter–Karen (Tim) Lecy, Mahnomen. There are nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, a sister and a granddaughter.

John W. Schultz
May 30, 1910–Dec. 23, 2000
John W. Schultz, 90, a longtime resident of the Ulen-Hitterdal area, died at the Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen on Saturday, Dec. 23.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28, from Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen.
Rev. Jeff McCracken and Rev. Loren Fevig will officiate at the funeral, Carol Lockhart will be the organist and the vocalist will be LaVel Andersen.
Interment will be at North Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, with the Anderson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Kelly Schultz, Bradley Schultz, Mick Denenny, Lisa Denenny, Jeff Olson, Ranae Olson, Jeff Bates, Kirsten Bates, Todd Graf, Karen Graf, Richard McLain, Lonnie McLain Schultz, Ron Zimmerman and Pam Zimmerman.
John W. Schultz, son of John and Mary Plantenberg Schultz, was born near Emerson, Nebr., on May 30, 1910.
As a child, he moved with his family to the area south of Hitterdal, where he attended school and then graduated from Hitterdal High School. He worked on farms and helped on his parents’ farm after high school graduation.
On March 4, 1934, John W. Schultz and Ordella Holte were married in Ulen.
They farmed, first at Hitterdal, and then in the Ulen area, with John farming full-time until 1953 when he took employment with the Ulen Co-Operative Creamery.
He became manager of the creameries in both Ulen and Hawley and then was a field man for Mid-America Dairy before retiring in 1975.
Upon retiring, Mr. Schultz assisted his children in various efforts. He and his wife lived at Northern Lights Apartments in Ulen for the past year.
A member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, he served on the church council and also aided the Ulen Historical Society.
Mr. Schultz was an avid sports fan and enjoyed football, basketball and baseball.
Surviving are his wife–Ordella, Ulen; a daughter–Joann (Verle) Rinke, Glyndon; three sons–Gene (Orpha) and JoNeil (Ruby), both of Ulen, and Kenneth (Ione), Hitterdal; three sisters–Opal (Vern) Hedman, Vergas; Darlene (Waldo) Kjos, Hitterdal, and Beverly (Elwood) Mell, Coon Rapids, and two brothers–Harold, Hitterdal, and Lyle (Beverly), Hawley. There are eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Schultz in death were his parents, a brother, two sisters and a great-grandchild.
Visitation: Thursday, Dec. 28, 9 a.m. until time of funeral at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with family service at 9:30.

Elsie F. Skaalen
Oct. 29, 1915–Dec. 23, 2000
Services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28, from the Frazee Care Center for Elsie F. Skaalen.
Mrs. Skaalen, 85, died at the Frazee Care Center on Saturday, Dec. 23. She had been a resident at the facility since 1996.
Rev. Tim Cook will officiate at the funeral.
Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Frazee, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Derek Skaalen, Mike Buck, Matthew Critt, Gary Thunstrom, Ed Jutz and Tim Thunstrom.
Elsie Zirbel, daughter of Henry and Agnes Dethloff Zirbel, was born Oct. 29, 1915, in Bowdon, N. D., and was raised on the family farm.
She and Hilman Skaalen were married on Jan. 2, 1956, in Grand Rapids and farmed near Brainerd before moving to a hobby farm near Detroit Lakes in 1960.
Mrs. Skaalen enjoyed gardening, raising flowers and the outdoors.
Surviving are a son–Wayne Skaalen, Detroit Lakes; a daughter–Joyce Skaalen, Rochert; a brother–Henry Zirbel, Bowdon, N. D., and two sisters–Helen Hahn, Fargo, and Mima Ihme, Lisbon, N. D. There are two grandsons.
Preceding her in death were her husband (who died May 17, 1984), her parents, three brothers (Raymond, Lawrence and Carrol) and a sister (Elizabeth).
Visitation: Wednesday, Dec. 27, 6-8 p.m., West-Kjos Funeral Home and also one hour prior to funeral at the Frazee Care Center.

Louis L. "Lee" Stiyer
Sept. 6, 1922–Dec. 23, 2000
Louis L. "Lee" Stiyer, 78, a longtime resident of Sugar Bush Township in Becker County, died at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes on Saturday, Dec. 23.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28, from the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Callaway.
Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Richwood, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Louis L. Stiyer, son of Louis L. and Harriet O. Loop Stiyer, was born at Wendell on Sept. 6, 1922.
He grew up at Wendell, attended country school and then later lived in Deer River, where he attended the Deer River Public School..
Upon completing school, Mr. Stiyer worked on a farm near Wheaton and–on Dec. 24, 1943–married Della Yoder at Wheaton.
They farmed at Wheaton following their marriage and then moved to Sugar Bush Township at rural Ogema in 1948.
Mr. Stiyer was involved in farming, construction work, carpentry, logging and driving truck and worked for the American Crystal Sugar Co. Plant in Moorhead for 20 years.
He continued to farm at rural Ogema until the time of his death.
A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, he served as an usher and also had served as president of the church council. He also served on the Sugar Bush Township board.
Mr. Stiyer enjoyed horses, livestock and making maple syrup.
Surviving are his wife–Della, Ogema; three daughters–Carolyn (Gary) Heitkamp, Rochert; Rita (Craig) Bartelson Sidney, Mont., and Diane Meyer, Lake Park; three sons–John (Shirley), Cass Lake, and Archie (Rebel) and Kent, both of Ogema; a sister–Harriett Elliot, Mesa, Ariz.; a sister-in-law–Leona Stiyer, Grand Rapids, and a brother-in-law–James Yoder, Vassar, Mich. There are 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a son (David, who was killed in 1969 while serving with the U. S. armed forces during the Vietnam War) and two brothers (Myron and Archie).
Visitation: Wednesday, Dec. 27, 4-8 p.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with prayer service at 7. Also one hour prior to funeral.

Sherry Dee Hart Thompson Zabel
April 21, 1946–Dec. 31, 2000
Sherry Dee Hart Thompson Zabel, 54, died at her home at rural Wells on Sunday, Dec. 31.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Wells, with Rev. Meg Sander and Rev. Paul Baker officiating.
Interment will be at Rosehill Cemetery in Wells, with the Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Sherry Redman, daughter of Gerhard "Red" and Leona Hoff Redman, was born April 21, 1946, in Milbank, S. D.
She grew up in South Dakota, graduated from Arlington (S. D.) High School and from Dakota Weselyn University and taught one year at St. Casimir Catholic School and then taught kindergarten at Wells for 30 years.
She married Steve Hart in August, 1974, and he died in May, 1983. In August, 1996, she and Robert Thompson were married and he died the following December.
On July 31, 1999, she married Harold Zabel.
A member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, she served on the church council and was a president of the congregation. She also sang in the senior choir, served on the call committee, was a member of Joy Circle and played piano for the pre-school choir.
In addition, she was a member of the U. S. C. Education Association, the Minnesota Education Association, the National Education Association, belonged to various bridge clubs and once was a member of the Wells Golf Club. She enjoyed to travel.
Surviving are her husband–Harold Zabel, Wells; two sons–Dan (Ami) Hart, Wells, and Matt (Jonelle) Hart, Lino Lakes; her father and step-mother–G. A. and Vi Redman, Arlington, S. D.; a sister–Sandra (Kenny) Sunderland, Waverly; two step-daughters–Julie (Steve) Blaske, Shoreview, and Wanda (Rick) Heesch, New Effington, S. D., and a step-son–Greg (fiancee Summer Stores), Moorhead. There is one granddaughter and eight step-grandchildren.
In addition to her two husbands, she also was preceded in death by her mother.

Leland Mott
Oct. 15, 1939–Dec. 29, 2000
Leland Mott, 61, a former area resident, died at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, N. D., on Friday, Dec. 29.
The funeral was at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, from St. Pauli Lutheran Church at rural Thief River Falls, with Rev. Gerri Cuppett officiating. Lynda Olson was the organist.
Interment was at the St. Hilaire Community Cemetery, with the Green Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Eddy Olson, Tom Olson, Mike Olson, Rodney Martinson, Jeff Martinson and Scott Martinson.
Grandchildren were the honorary pallbearers.
Leland Raymond Mott, son of Robert and Ruth Tandy Mott, was born at Audubon on Oct. 15, 1939.
He attended school in Detroit Lakes, graduated from the welding department at the Thief River Falls Area Vocational Technical Institute and served with the U. S. Air Force from 1957-63.
On Aug. 18, 1963, Mr. Mott and Carol Ann Martinson were married in Detroit Lakes and lived at Thief River Falls, Renton, Wash., Seattle, Wash., Warroad and Callaway.
Mr. Mott enjoyed fishing, gardening, bird watching, restoring old and classical cars and was a member of the Northland C. B. Club.
Surviving are his wife–Carol, St. Hilaire; his mother–Ruth J. Tandy, Dallesport, Wash.; two sons–Leland Jr., Newfolden, and Lonnie (Patty), Argyle; three daughters–Carmine (Brian) Trulson, Newfolden; Carolyn (Allen) Laughery, Crookston, and Loretta McTeer, Carrolton, Ga.; two brothers–Leonard (Mickey) and Larry (Helen), both of Seattle, Wash.; two half-brothers–Wayne Hankins, Washington, and Marvin Hankins, Woodland Park, Colo., and two sisters–Lacastala (Chuck) Davis and Ruby LaPiere. There are 16 grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Mott in death were his father, his grandparents, his step-mother (Frieda Mott), a granddaughter, a sister (Lorraine Mott), two brothers (Loren Mott and Lorrall Mott) and his foster parents (Leonard and Mildred Lachowitzer).
