Lars Mathew Newman
Lars Mathew Newman, week-old son of Heather Henderson and Shane Newman of Frazee, died at Innovis Hospital in Fargo on Friday, Dec. 29.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, from the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples, with Rev. Terry Stumbo officiating.
Interment was at Scandia Valley Cemetery, with the Brenny Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Surviving are his parents; a twin brother–Levi Michael, and his grandmother–Patricia Henderson, Fingal, N. D.

Lyle E. Andring
Nov. 29, 1932–Oct. 1, 2000
Lyle E. Andring, 67, died at his home in Detroit Lakes on Sunday, Oct. 1.
The funeral will be at 12 noon on Thursday, Oct. 5, from Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Jerry Rogers officiating.
Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Jeff Cypher, George Martinez, Brian Voeltz, Greg Neisen, Scott Andring and Allen Squires.
The honorary pallbearers will include Rick Andring, Marie Andring, Bob Andring, Erica Andring, Michelle Andring, Krysta Andring, Kara Andring, Tom Andring, Scott Cypher, Kyle Martinez, Denver Martinez, Logan Martinez, Daniel Neisen, Brenda Voeltz and Paul Voeltz.
Military rites will be by John Bridges Post No. 15, the Detroit Lakes American Legion unit, and Jess-Omundson Post No. 1676, the Detroit Lakes Veterans of Foreign Wars unit.
Lyle Edward Andring, son of Harry and Grace Martin Andring, was born at Mahnomen on Nov. 29, 1932.
He graduated from Mahnomen High School (Class of 1950), served from 1953-55 with the U. S. Army and married Marlene Smith at Detroit Lakes on July 12, 1958.
Mr. Andring worked for the Harold Carlson Texaco firm in Detroit Lakes and, from 1972-95, operated All Star Carpet Cleaning Service.
Surviving are his wife–Marlene, Detroit Lakes; three sons–Mark, Lake Park; Brian (Jill), Detroit Lakes, and Eric, Hickson, N. D.; four daughters–Paula (Jeff) Cypher, Miltona; Kae (George) Martinez, Fairmont, and Connie (Greg) Neisen and Coleen (Brian) Voeltz, both Detroit Lakes; two brothers–Jack (Jo), Pawnee, Ill., and Robert (Dorothy), Mankato, and four sisters–Ina Schuller and Edith Varner, both of Golden Valley; Delores (Hilmer) Hovelson, Rice Lake, and Pat Jurgensen, Anoka. There are 15 grandchildren.
Visitation: Wednesday, Oct. 4, David-Donehower Funeral Home, 4-8 p.m., with parish prayers at 7:30. Also one hour prior to funeral on Thursday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Henry “Hank” Elliott
Dec. 21, 1949–Oct. 1, 2000
Henry “Hank” Elliott, 50, a Pelican Rapids resident, died Sunday, Oct. 1, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids.
Rev. Kent Groethe will officiate at the service, Anne Schroeder will be the organist and the soloist will be Everett Johnson.
Serving as the honorary pallbearers will be Daryl Nelson, Dale Nelson, Doug Nelson and Jerry Moore.
The Larson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Henry Julius Knutson, son of Henry and Margery Nelson Knutson, was born Dec. 21, 1949, in Fergus Falls.
Raised by his mother and adopted father (Edwin Elliott), he graduated from Coon Rapids High School and attended the Anoka Vocational Technical Institute.
Mr. Elliott served with the U. S. Navy in 1969-70 and–on Feb. 21, 1970–was married to Marla Hagen in Anoka.
He was employed as a machinist for F. M. C. from 1969-84, was with RMS at Fridley from 1987-92, was a truck driver for Riteway Mobile Home from 1992-94 and then was with Statewide Mobile Home until retiring due to ill health in 1996.
Mr. Elliott enjoyed the outdoors.
Surviving are his wife–Marla, Pelican Rapids; a daughter–Trisha (Dayton) Ekblad, Circle Pines; a son–Christian (special friend Michelle) Elliott, Coon Rapids; his mother–Margery Elliott, Hayward, Wis., and a sister–Donna Fisher, Hayward, Wis. There are four grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his adopted father (Edwin Elliott), his father (Henry Knutson) and a sister (Sonja).
Registration: One hour prior to funeral at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Bennett C. Berg
Dec. 15, 1931–Oct. 1, 2000
Bennett C. Berg, 68, died Sunday, Oct. 1, at his home in Perham.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, from Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham, with the Rev. Richard Kennedy officiating.
Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes, with the Schoeneberger Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Bennett Calmer Berg, son of Casper and Betsy Moen Berg, was born Dec. 15, 1931, in Pelican Rapids, attended school there and served with the U. S. Army during the Korean War.
He was discharged from the armed forces in 1952 and married Mary Louise Katzenberger in Hibbing on May 22, 1954.
The Bergs lived in Hibbing, where he was a baker at the Sunrise Bakery and where his wife was a bookkeeper at the F. W. Woolworth Co. store. They moved to Montevideo and purchased the Dutch Maid Bakery in 1962 and sold the bakery and moved to Perham in 1973.
While in Perham, the Bergs owned and operated the Big Pine Resort on Big Pine Lake until 1987. Mr. Berg also was employed at Tuffy’s in Perham from 1973-89.
The Bergs moved to their home at Rush Lake in 1987.
Mr. Berg enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing woodcraft, along with gardening, baking and travel. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American Legion.
Surviving are a daughter–Sue Ellen (Curtis) Winters, Montevideo; a son–Jeffrey (Nancy), Long Prairie, and four sisters–Christine Rossum, Pelican Rapids; Margaret Lerbakken, Breckenridge; Alice Gunderson, Fox Lake, Ill., and Delore Gamelgaard, Phoenix, Ariz. There are four grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his wife (who died July 31, 2000), his parents, two brothers (Odin and Julian) and three sisters (Catherine Pederson, Bernice Pederson and Lenore Gunderson).
Visitation: Wednesday, Oct. 4, 4-8 p.m., Schoeneberger Funeral Home in Perham, with prayer service at 7:30.

Barbara R. Teiken
Feb. 19, 1931–Oct. 1, 2000
Barbara R. Teiken, 69, died at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind., on Sunday, Oct. 1.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, from Annunciation Church in Brazil, Ind.
Interment was at Restlawn Cemetery, with the Moore Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Barbara Erickson, daughter of Dell and Pearl Haugen Erickson, was born at Twin Valley on Feb. 19, 1931, and married Jack Teiken on Sept. 26, 1950.
Surviving are her mother; her husband, four daughters–Paulette Teiken, Brazil, Ind.; Lorrie (Tom) Heber, Terre Haute, Ind.; Andrea (Bill) Bolin, Garrison, and Mary (Chad) Brown, Center Point, Ind.; a brother–Darrell Erickson, and a sister–Sandra Hilker. There are six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mrs. Teiken in death were her father, a sister, a brother (Allen Erickson), a son (Lorene, who died in infancy) and a daughter (Debra, who died in infancy).

Harriet Haugen
Sept. 3, 1916–Oct. 6, 2000
Harriet Haugen, 84, died at the Green Pines Nursing Center in Menahga on Friday, Oct. 6.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 9, from Bethel Evangelical Free Church in Fargo.
Interment was at Ringsaker Cemetery in Pelican Rapids, with the Korsmo Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Harriet Swenson, daughter of Hjelmer and Mabel Kloster Swenson, was born at Kensal, N. D., on Sept. 3, 1916.
She grew up in the Aneta, N. D., area and in Minneapolis and graduated from high school in Minneapolis.
Following high school graduation, she earned a degree at Carleton College in Northfield and taught two years at Lake City.
On Oct. 19, 1940, Harriet Swenson and Douglas C. Haugen were married at Minneapolis.
They lived near Pelican Rapids, where they owned and operated the Camper’s Point Campground.
The Haugens moved to Fargo in the late 1970s, Mr. Haugen died on July 19 of this year and Mrs. Haugen continued to live in Fargo until moving to the nursing home just recently.
Surviving are a daughter–Christine (DeForest) Malstrom, Park Rapids; two sons–Bly (Robin) Haugen, Denver, Colo., and Carl (Lynnette) Haugen, Rogers; a half-sister–Mary (Charles) Haller, Oregon, and three half-brothers–Hjelmer (Terry) Swenson, Minneapolis, and Fred Swenson, and David (Joan) Swenson, both Boston, Mass. There are nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials: Preferred to New Life Center, Fargo.

Donald M. Stalboerger
June 10, 1926–Oct. 5, 2000
Rites were at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 9, from St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Waubun for Donald M. Stalboerger.
Mr. Stalboerger, 74, died at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes on Thursday, Oct. 5.
Fr. Ron Meyer, O. M. I., and Fr. Rick Lambert officiated at the funeral and Lea Stech was the organist.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the Mattson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Max Voss, Wayne Becker, Glenn Hanson, Bernard Stalboerger, Gary Klinkhammer and Bill Stalboerger.
Honorary pallbearers included Mr. Stalboerger’s grandsons, members of Mahnomen Knights of Columbus Council No. 2573, members of Isaacson-Bjorge American Legion Post No. 31 of Mahnomen and members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No., 9880 of Ogema.
Military rites were by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9880.
Donald M. Stalboerger, son of John and Martha Winter Stalboerger, was born at Mahnomen on June 10, 1926.
He grew up and attended rural school neatr Waubun, served with the U. S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II and married Julia Ann Young at Waubun on June 24, 1947.
In addition to working at the Waubun Creamery for many years, Mr. Stalboerger also was employed by the Waubun Liquor Store, drove bus for the Waubun School District, worked for the Waubun Cattle Co. and worked for Bursch Farms near Mahnomen until retiring in the late 1990’s.
Mr. Stalboerger was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, of Mahnomen Knights of Columbus Council No.2573, of Isaacson-Bjorge American Legion Post No. 31 of Mahnomen and of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.9880 of Ogema.
He also belonged to the Mahnomen Rod and Gun Club, the Mahnomen Deer Hunters Association and served on the Waubun School Board during the 1960s. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, the outdoors and–in retirement–restored old tractors.
Surviving are two sons–Bob (Gretchen), Callaway, and Doug, Thief River Falls; three daughters–Cathy (Dennis) Erickson, Pelican Rapids; Michelle (Jim) Nowak, St. Francis, Wis., and Sheila (Dale) Erickson, Mahnomen; two brothers–Ervin (Patsy), Underwood, and Wilfred, Waubun; two sisters–Rose (Delmar) Benesh, Ada, and Doris Underdahl, Minneapolis, and a special friend–Nona Stalboerger, Waubun. There are 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife (who died in 1975), a brother (John) and a great-granddaughter.
