Arno Donald Bergseth
Dec. 22, 1916–Oct. 6, 2000
Arno Donald Bergseth, 83, co-founder of Bergseth Bros. Co., Inc., in Fargo, died Friday, Oct. 6, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 9, from Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead.
The Korsmo Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Arno Donald Bergseth, son of Andreas and Magdalene Reid Bergseth, was born at Fargo on Dec. 22, 1916.
He grew up in Fargo, graduated from high school there and married Eveleth Fern Richards in 1941. They made their home in Fargo.
Mr. Bergseth served with the U.S. Army during World War II, returned to Fargo upon receiving his discharge from the armed forces and–in 1946–co-founded Bergseth Bros. Co., Inc., with his brother, Milton. He retired in 1978.
A Boy Scout leader, he served as commander of American Legion Post No. 21 of Moorhead and was a 50-year member of Bethesda Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed music and hosting family gatherings at his cabin.
Surviving are his wife–Evy, Moorhead; a son–Del (Norma Altmann) Bergseth, Detroit Lakes, and a daughter–Valerie (Jerry) Nielsen, Moorhead. There are five grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were two brothers (Milton and Robert).

Betty L. Halvorson
June 13, 1930–Oct. 9, 2000
Betty L. Halvorson, 70, Detroit Lakes, died Monday, Oct. 9, at Emmanuel Nursing Home.
There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, from the David-Donehower Chapel in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Tim Cook officiating.
The David-Donehower Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Betty Posey was born June 13, 1930, in Bismarck, N. D., and was raised and attended school at Glenfield, N. D., where she graduated from high school. While in high school, she played basketball and was in several school plays.
On July 2, 1949, she and Raymond Halvorson were married in Fargo and lived in Fargo, Park Rapids, Willmar, Montevideo, Wadena, Baudette, Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes. Mrs. Halvorson worked as a teller in a number of banks and was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
She enjoyed playing cards, watching football and casinos.
Surviving are her husband–Raymond, Detroit Lakes; a son–Rick Halvorson, Detroit Lakes; two daughters–Raeleen (Skip) Lohse, Fergus Falls, and Roberta (Brad) Johnson, Globe, Ariz.; a sister–Gert Mehlhouse, Hamilton, Mont., and a brother–Barnie (Janice) Posey, Missoula, Mont. There are four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents and two brothers (Donald and Julian).

Julian M. “Jay” Mickelson
Sept. 22, 1906–Oct. 8, 2000
Julian M. “Jay” Mickelson, 94, died Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Frazee Care Center, where he had resided since August, 1999.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, from Bethany Lutheran Church at rural Menahga.
Rev. Roger Michaelson will officiate at the funeral and interment will be at the church Cemetery, with the Furey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Tom Mickelson, Mike Ramsay, Kevin Mickelson, Joe Mickelson, Phillip Mickelson, Darrin Hille, Alex Mickelson and Garrett Ramsay.
Grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers.
Julian Mikkel Mickelson, son of Jens and Barbara Erickson Mickelson, was born Sept. 22, 1906, in Elvmodneir, Norway.
The family moved to the United States in 1907, settled at Marietta and, when Mr. Mickelson was 13, moved to Spruce Grove Township of Becker County.
Mr. Mickelson and Beatrice “Betty” Torkelson were married on July 16, 1931.
They became involved in diversified farming, along with David and Elsie Mickelson. The Mickelsons bought their first turkeys in 1936 and remained in business together until 1947 after which sons Harold and Lyle joined Jay Mickelson, who retired in 1966.
Mrs. Mickelson died on April 14, 1979, and he married Beryl Henderson on June 24, 1979, in Menahga. They made their home at rural Frazee and wintered in Arizona and Florida.
Surviving are his wife–Beryl, Detroit Lakes; two sons–Lyle (Jeannette) and Harold (Sandi), both Frazee; two step-sons–Jack (Pat) Henderson, Forest Lake, and Tom (Linda) Henderson, Detroit Lakes; a step-daughter–Rosalie (David) Larson, Fargo, and a brother–David (Elsie) Mickelson Sr., Frazee.
In addition to his first wife, Mr. Mickelson also was preceded in death by a son (Donald), a daughter (Dorothy), his parents and a sister (Brynhild).
Visitation: Wednesday, Oct. 11, Furey Chapel in Frazee, 4-7:30 p.m., with prayer service at 7:30. Also one hour prior to funeral at the church on Thursday.

Pauline M. Porter
Oct. 27, 1909–Sept. 28, 2000
Pauline M. Porter, 90, died Thursday, Sept. 28, at her home at the Anchor Inn Resort on Cotton Lake.
The funeral was at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, from the Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church in Rolling Prairie, Ind.
Rev. Andy Martin officiated at the funeral.
Interment was at the Rolling Prairie Cemetery, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home and the Haverstock Funeral Home of LaPorte, Ind., in charge of arrangements.
Pauline Vandewalker, daughter of George and Harriette Crowl Vandewalker, was born at LaPorte, Ind., on Oct. 27, 1909.
She grew up and attended school in LaPorte and was married to Burl Porter at LaPorte on Dec. 10, 1927.
Mrs. Porter worked as a sales clerk at the J. C. Penney Co. store and also as a housekeeper at Hamilton Grove.
The Porters lived at Rolling Prairie until moving to Cotton Lake near Rochert. Mrs. Porter had lived with her daughter for the past 11 years.
Surviving are a daughter–Patricia Wordinger, Rochert, and five sons–Charles, Rolling Prairie, Ind.; John, Frankfort, Ind.; Kenneth, LaPorte, Ind.; Paul, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Thomas, Columbia, Tenn. There are 23 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mrs. Porter in death were her parents, her husband (who died Jan. 30, 1982) and two brothers (Alvin and John).

Henry L. “Hank” Walther
May 30, 1914–Oct. 9, 2000
Henry L. “Hank” Walther, 86, who owned and operated Walther’s Tackle and Marine in Detroit Lakes for many years, died Monday, Oct. 9, at the Frazee Care Center, where he had been a resident for the past two years.
There will be a Masonic memorial service at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Frazee Care Center.
The David-Donehower Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Henry L. Walther, son of Louis and Alice Templeton Walther, was born in Chicago, Ill., on May 30, 1914.
Mr. Walther grew up and attended school in Chicago, later served on expeditions to Alaska for the Chicago Field Museum and married Louise Smith at Libertyville, Ill., on Nov. 1, 1941.
During World War II, he served with the armed forces in Europe and was a company commander.
Shortly after the end of World War II, the Walthers moved to Minnesota and later moved to Detroit Lakes where he founded the tackle business.
While operating the tackle shop, he did radio shows for various stations, authored a book entitled “Fishing in Minnesota” and participated in various local and national fishing tournaments.
The Walthers began traveling throughout Central America and Mexico during the mid-1960s and Mr. Walther wrote a number of articles for the Detroit Lakes Newspapers.
They retired in 1968 and built a home on Island Lake near Osage. During retirement, Mr. Walther taught small engine repair for the Detroit Lakes Area Vocational Technical Institute.
A past member of the Methodist church, he served on the church board. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Detroit Lakes for over 50 years and served as an advisor for the local DeMolay youth organization for many years. He also served as scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 45 in Detroit Lakes and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, theater, opera and the Moorhead State Straw Hat Players.
Surviving are his wife–Louise, Frazee, and two sons–Henry, Fairfax, Va., and Michael (Susan), Callaway. There are seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a daughter (Louise, who died in 1991), two brothers and two sisters.
Visitation: One hour prior to memorial service at Frazee Care Center.

Lawrence A. Skoog
Oct. 4, 1911–Oct. 10, 2000
Lawrence A. Skoog, 89, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.
Lawrence A. Skoog, son of Andrew and Anna Berg Skoog, was born Oct. 4, 1911, in Minneapolis.
He moved with his parents to rural Waubun in 1920, attended country school and farmed in the area his entire life. He also did long distance hauling for several elevators prior to retiring in 1974.
Mr. Skoog was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Waubun.
Surviving are two nieces and a friend–Mae Kersting.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister (Marie Kvare Rosenberg) and a brother (LeRoy, who died in infancy).
At the request of Mr. Skoog, there will be no funeral.
Memorials: Preferred to Waubun High School Dollars for Scholars.
