Karmen O. “Karm” Knutson
July 13, 1919–Oct. 16, 2000
Karmen O. “Karm” Knutson, 81, a resident of Detroit Lakes for the past 35 years, died at St. Mary’s Nursing Center on Monday, Oct. 16.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, from First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Tim Cook officiating.
Interment will be at Bagstevold Cemetery at Erhard, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Don Lynch, Laurel Aasgaard, Roger Viker, Dennis Forsell, Arnold Bueng, Ron Zeman, LeRoy DelMain and Norm Frey.
The honorary pallbearers will be Hilbert Isaacson, Elmer Tingelstad, Edwin Erickson, Iola Erickson, Norma Jacobson and Alma Olson, all classmates from the 1937 graduating class at Pelican Rapids High School.
Karmen O. Knutson, son of Oscar and Inga Hagen Knutson, was born at Pelican Rapids on July 13, 1919.
He attended school in Pelican Rapids, graduated from Pelican Rapids High School (Class of 1937) and attended business college in Minneapolis.
Mr. Knutson and Lorraine Wissbrod were married at Erhard on June 22, 1941, and he served with the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Upon receiving his discharge from the armed forces, he owned and operated a grocery store in Erhard and then moved to Fergus Falls, where he worked for the Gamble Robinson Wholesale Co.
The Knutsons then moved to Fargo, where he worked for Super Valu and–in 1963–moved to Minneapolis, where he was a salesmen for the G. E. Mack Co. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1965 and he continued working for the G. E. Mack firm until retiring after which he worked in real estate sales in Detroit Lakes.
A member of The American Legion and Elks, Mr. Knutson enjoyed woodworking, fishing and golf.
Surviving are his wife–Lorraine; a son–Michael (Joey), Burnsville; a daughter–Patty (Bruce) Anderson, Bemidji, and two brothers–Russell Knutson, Pelican Rapids, and Gerhart (Delphine) Knutson, Portland, Ore. There are four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother–Gerhart, who died in infancy.
Visitation: Thursday, Oct. 19, 4-7 p.m., West-Kjos Funeral Home and one hour prior to funeral at First Lutheran Church.

Kenneth Mountain
Kenneth Mountain, 44, a resident of Los Angeles, Calif., and formerly of Ponsford, died at the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Hospital on Wednesday, Oct. 11.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, from St. Theodore’s Catholic Church in Ponsford.
The David-Donehower Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Visitation: From 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, until time of funeral, St. Theodore’s Guild Hall in Ponsford.

Grace D. Pickett
April 15, 1915–Oct. 16, 2000
Grace D. Pickett, 85, Park Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 16, at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes.
The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, from Immanuel Lutheran Church at Shell Lake.
Rev. Dean Holm will officiate and Miranda Nolan will be the soloist.
Interment will be at Pickett Cemetery at Evergreen, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The pallbearers will include Russell Pickett, Edward Pickett, Scott Pickett, John Litzau, John Pickett and Jason Berger.
Great-grandsons will be the honorary pallbearers.
Grace D. Adams, daughter of Delbert and Lillie Faulkner Adams, was born April 15, 1915, in Ollie, Mont., grew up in the Dakotas and Montana and came to Minnesota in a covered wagon from Montana.
She attended country school at Toad Lake in Becker County and married Victor Pickett on May 9, 1945.
Mrs. Pickett lived in the Shell Lake area and at Park Rapids until entering the nursing home in September.
She was an avid reader, liked horses and cats and enjoyed quilting and craft.
Surviving are seven children–Bob (Kathy) Pickett, Don Pickett and Victor (Kathleen) Pickett Jr., all Park Rapids; Verlyn (Marvin) Carr, Rochert; LaVerne (Bobbie) Pickett, Minneapolis, Larry (Sue) Pickett, Princeton, and Virginia Olund, Detroit Lakes; a step-son–Gene (Peggy) Pickett, Jonesboro, Ark.; two sisters–Vera Lee, Spokane, Wash., and Margaret Pickett, Bovey, and three brothers–Elwin (Linda) Adams, Kenneth Adams and Cecil (Elenora) Adams, all Detroit Lakes. There are 22 grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and five great-step-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, a son (LeRoy, who died in infancy), a brother (Earl), a daughter-in-law (Ann), a brother-in-law (Mike) and two grandchildren.
Visitation: Wednesday, Oct. 18, 3-6 p.m., West-Kjos Funeral Home and one hour prior to funeral at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Darin Ray Martin
May 16, 1968–Oct. 18, 2000
Darin Ray Martin, 32, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
The funeral was at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bejou, with the Rev. Clem Wagstrom officiating. Dorothy Goos was the organist and special music was by John Mattson.
Interment was at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Mahnomen, with the Mattson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Jason Keller, Cory Gjesvold, Cory Krabbenhoft, Scott Gjesvold, Todd Gjesvold, Jay Goodwin and Craig Gjesvold.
Darin Martin, son of James and Ramona Gjesvold Martin, was born in Elgin, N. D., on May 16, 1968.
He moved with his family to Waubun in 1978, graduated from Waubun High School (Class of 1988) and–over the years–participated in local and state Special Olympics.
He earned a gold medal and silver medal in bowling in the Special Olympics held in Connecticut in 1994.
Mr. Martin attended Bemidji Tech for a year, was employed at the Occupational Development Center (ODC) in Bemidji and went to work for Aramark Food Service at Bemidji State University during the school year in 1991.
During the summer months, he was employed at Camp Thunderbird, a language camp for world wide students, near Bemidji.
Surviving are his mother–Ramona Martin-Goodwin and her husband Al, Waubun, and a brother–Steve (Nan), Hawley. There are two nephews.
Preceding him in death was his father, who died in 1986.

Ross Vincent Anderson
May 13, 1950–Oct. 18, 2000
Ross Vincent Anderson, 50, Fargo, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Baudette.
There was a memorial service on Sunday, Oct. 22, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead.
The Wright Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Ross Vincent Anderson was born at Minneapolis on May 13, 1950, grew up and attended school in Moorhead and graduated from Moorhead High School.
For several years, he was employed on the Alaskan Pipeline and then returned to the Fargo-Moorhead area and attended North Dakota State University.
Mr. Anderson worked in commercial construction and was employed by various Fargo-Moorhead area contractors. At the time of his death, he was with the R. L. Engebretson Construction firm of Fargo.
He enjoyed fishing and entered many tournaments in that sport.
Surviving are his father–Vincent and his wife Joan, Detroit Lakes (near Pelican Lake), and a sister–Lynne (Dallas) Bender, Moorhead. There are two nephews.
Preceding him in death was his mother, Marjorie.

Duane D. “Denny” Olson
Dec. 6, 1924–Oct. 23, 2000
Duane D. “Denny” Olson, 75, Detroit Lakes, died Monday, Oct. 23, at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
Fr. John Husband will officiate at the funeral, Stephanie Dunkirk will be the organist and Kim Schnitzer will be the soloist, accompanied by Vicki Marthaler.
Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Jan Rootham, Tim Schnitzer, Mike Olson, Doug Nelson, Larry Stephenson, Joe Rethwisch, Mike Illg and Paul Fresonke.
Military rites will be by Jess-Omundson Post No. 1676, the Detroit Lakes unit of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Duane D. Olson, son of Peter M. and Hilda Borg Olson, was born in Detroit Lakes on Dec. 6, 1924, and grew up and attended school in Detroit Lakes.
He worked for Peters Meat Products for a time until entering the U. S. Army Air Corps, where he attained the rating of technical sergeant. He served as a flight gunner aboard a B-17 with the 49th Bomb Squad of the U. S. Second Bomb Group and saw duty in the Italian Theater during World War II.
Upon being discharged from the armed forces, he returned to Detroit Lakes and was employed by Peters Meat Products from 1945-72.
On June 4, 1954, he and Betty Lou Illg were married in Sisseton, S. D.
Mr. Olson worked for International Multifoods from 1972-87 and, after retiring with that firm, he worked for Royal Foods on a part-time basis from 1987-93.
A member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, he also belonged to the Jess-Omundson Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
Surviving are his wife–Betty Lou; three sons–Darrell (Sandy), Bruce (Laurie) and Peter (Connie), all Detroit Lakes; three daughters–Marcheta (Larry) Cobb, Seattle, Wash.; Lori (Terry) Koenig, Moorhead, and Kathleen (Michael) Kiehl, Detroit Lakes; a brother–Louis Olson, West Fargo, and a sister–Mae Woody, Hillsboro, Ore. There are 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Olson in death were a son (Perry), a grandson, his parents, four sisters (Alice, Donna, Helen and Doris) and three brothers (George, Gene and Everett).
Visitation: Wednesday, 4-8 p.m., David-Donehower Funeral Home. There will be no visitation at the church.
