Michael McCauley
Oct. 24, 1944–Oct. 23, 2000
Michael McCauley, 55, died at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes on Monday, Oct. 23.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, from Christ Lutheran Church in Wolf Lake.
Interment will be at the Wolf Lake Cemetery, with the Furey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Michael Owen McCauley,son of Tim and Enid Oja McCauley, was born in Wolf Lake Township of Becker County on Oct. 24, 1944.
He was raised in Wolf Lake Township, lived at group homes in Fergus Falls and Brainerd and, most recently, lived in the Lakes Homes and Program Development in Detroit Lakes.
Surviving are an uncle and an aunt.

Alice T. Erickson
Dec. 22, 1912–Oct. 21, 2000
Services were at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, from Richwood Lutheran Church for Alice T. Erickson.
Mrs. Erickson, 87, died Saturday, Oct. 21, at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes, where she had resided since September, 1999.
Rev. John W. Lee officiated at the funeral, Jean Erickson was the organist and the soloist was Paul Coughlin.
Interment was at Richwood Lutheran Cemetery, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Wayne Lundberg, Jeff Erickson, Scott Landa, Dan Zimmerman, Kyle Erickson, Jesse Wallace, Tim Erickson and Jon Erickson.
Granddaughters and great-grandchildren were the honorary pallbearers.
Alice Coughlin, daughter of Jesse and Olava Hoghaug Coughlin, was born Dec. 22, 1912, in Detroit Township, graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1931) and then attended teachers college, where she received a teaching certificate.
She taught at Westbury, Audubon and Ulen for six years and married Ellsworth Erickson at Detroit Lakes on Feb. 2, 1938. The Ericksons farmed at rural Detroit Lakes.
Active in Richwood Lutheran Church, she held various church offices, was a member of the Ladies Aid, taught and served as superintendent of the Sunday School and was director and pianist of the Richwood Junior Choir. She sang in the senior choir and the ladies sextet until the age of 85.
Mrs. Erickson organized the Floyd Lake Beavers 4-H Club in 1952 and served as its leader for 12 years. She enjoyed oil painting, gardening, quilting, crochet and knitting.
Surviving are three sons–Dave (Jean), Curt (Janelle) and Milton (Marcella), all Detroit Lakes; four daughters–Lois (Douglas) Landa, Bloomington; Judy Wallace, Rochert; Karen (Roger) Lundberg, Detroit Lakes, and Barb (Wayne) Zimmerman, Rapid City, S. D., and a brother–Fred (Shirley) Coughlin, Detroit Lakes. There are 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband (who died Aug. 19, 1999), her parents, four brothers (Albin, Max, Joe and Gene), a sister (Edith Coughlin) and a son-in-law (Jim Wallace).

Rena Conley Bird
April 30, 1906–Oct. 21, 2000
Rena Conley Bird, 94, died Saturday, Oct. 21, at St. Mary’s Nursing Center, where she had resided since January, 1998.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25, from the United Methodist Church in Detroit Lakes.
Rev. Tim Cook officiated at the funeral, Mary Jo Suttie was the organist and the soloist was Russell Schrupp.
Interment was at Oak Grove Cemtery, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Mark Green, Steve Conley, Brad Green, Scott Green, Ryan Conley, Craig Conley, Tim Green and Michael Conley.
Rena McDougall, daughter of Elmer and Mary Clayton McDougall, was born in Walnut, Ill., on April 30, 1906, attended school in Sheldon, N. D., and then worked as a waitress in Fargo.
She and Howard Conley were married at Detroit Lakes in 1927, moved to Moorhead in 1941, where they owned and operated the Conley Grocery and moved to Detroit Lakes in 1947. They owned and operated the Conley Pen Co. until 1977.
Mr. Conley died Dec. 2, 1977,and she married George Bird at Detroit Lakes in March, 1984. Mr. Bird died Dec. 5, 1987.
Surviving are three sons–Howard (Margaret) Conley, Wyoming, and Wayne (Helen) Conley and Val (Pat) Conley, both Detroit Lakes, and a daughter–Barbara (Peter) Kowshowski, Detroit Lakes. There are 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her two husbands, Mrs. Bird also was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Marion I. Aken
Jan. 17, 1915–Oct. 22, 2000
Marion I. Aken, 85, died Sunday, Oct. 22, at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, from the West-Kjos Chapel in Detroit Lakes, with Fr. John Husband officiating.
Interment will be at the Moorhead Memorial Gardens, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Born at Stevens Point, Wis., on Jan. 17, 1915, she grew up and attended school at Stevens Point and then earned a teaching degree from Stevens Point State Teachers College.
On Nov. 5, 1937, she and Ronald Murray were married at Milwaukee, Wis.
She taught school for a short time, worked in the WPA office in Stevens Point and–in 1966–moved to Round Lake (rural Detroit Lakes). She worked for Multi-County Nursing in Detroit Lakes for six years and moved to Park Manor in 1991.
Mr. Murray died July 4, 1965, and she married Gerald Aken at Watertown, S. D., on Aug. 28, 1970. Mr. Aken died March 23, 1984.
Mrs. Aken was a member of the Order of Eastern Star at River Falls, Wis.
Surviving are a daughter–Eleanor (Glen) Solem, Bismarck, N. D.; a son–William (Linda) Murray, St. Francis; a step-daughter–RoseMari (Dennis) Anderson, Frazee; a step-son–Jerome (Marilyn) Aken, Anaheim, Calif., and two sisters–Jean Mathison, Bellingham, Wash., and Elizabeth Humphrey, Plover, Wis. There are five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and 16 step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her two husbands, Mrs. Aken also was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother (who died in infancy).
Visitation: None.

Scott E. Hummel.
Jan. 13, 1962–Oct. 23, 2000
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, from First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes for Scott E. Hummel.
Mr. Hummel, 38, drowned in Lake Seven south of Frazee on Monday, Oct. 23.
Rev. David Peterson will officiate at the service.
The Furey Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Scott Eric Hummel, son of Bruce and Phyllis Garaas Hummel, was born in Grand Forks, N. D., on Jan. 13, 1962, and moved with his family at a young age to Milwaukee, Wis.
The family moved to Jamestown, N. D., in 1966 and he attended school there through his junior year. The Hummels moved to Fargo and Scott graduated from Fargo North High School (Class of 1980).
He was a member of the Fargo North High School tennis team, attended the University of Oregon (where he majored in business education) following high school graduation and where he was in the tennis program.
Mr. Hummel transferred to Concordia College in Moorhead, received a degree in business administration and then moved to Washington, D. C., where he worked as an intern for Congressman Byron Dorgan of North Dakota as a legislative aide.
He later moved back to Fargo and worked as business manager of his father’s dental office until the time of his death.
Mr. Hummel enjoyed tennis, music and reading and once won the North Dakota State Junior tennis championship.
Surviving are his parents; two brothers–Kent (Gerianne), Wausau, Wis., and Grant, Fargo; a sister–Joli, Minneapolis; his grandparents–Val Hummel, Garrison, N. D., and Olaf and Agnes Garaas, Grenora, N. D., along with a special family friend–Pearl Tobiason, Moorhead. There also is one niece, a nephew and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his grandfather (Jake Hummel) and an uncle.

Anna Softing
Dec. 6, 1922–Oct 23, 2000
Anna Softing, 77, a longtime Hawley resident, died at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo on Monday, Oct. 23.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, from Grong Lutheran Church at Rollag.
Rev. Gary Simons will officiate at the funeral, Leona Frisk will be the organist and the vocalist will be August Frisk.
Interment will be at the church Cemetery, with the Vigen-Wright Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Darin Marick, Dawn Gad, Danita Marick, Deon Softing, Dustin Softing, Darcy Softing and Conile Teske.
Anna Berg, daughter of Carl and Hilda Lundstrom Berg, was born in Cormorant Township of Becker County on Dec. 6, 1922, graduated from Lake Park High School and–on Dec. 31, 1944–married Irving Softing at Hawley.
Following their marriage, they farmed in Parke Township of Clay County until moving into Hawley in 1965.
Mrs. Softing worked at the Bankrupt Store in Hawley for 40 years and also at Wahl Drug and Gift Shop until becoming ill.
She was a 55-year member of Grong Lutheran Church and was active in teaching Sunday School, Ladies Aid, Luther League and with the annual Fancy Work Sale.
Surviving are her husband–Irving, Hawley; a daughter–Connie (Lou) Marick, West Fargo; a son–Tony (Teresa) Softing Hawley; a brother–Gotfred Berg, Hawley, and two sisters–Edith Hedstrom and Esther Ness, both Lake Park. There are seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Thursday, Oct. 26, Vigen-Wright Funeral Home in Hawley, 5-7 p.m., with prayer service at 7. Also one hour prior to funeral at Grong Lutheran Church.

John L. Decock
June 8, 1983–Oct. 22, 2000
John L. Decock, 17, died Sunday, Oct. 22, in Compton Township of Otter Tail County.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, from St. Ann’s Catholic Church, with Fr. Albert A. Holmes officiating.
Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, with the Bielema Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
John L. Decock, son of Henry and Judy Senn Decock, was born at Wadena on June 8, 1983.
He was a senior at Wadena-Deer Creek High School, worked at Fix’s Family Foods in Wadena and enjoyed collecting Legos and playing the computer and Nintendo. He had planned to attend school to study computer science.
Surviving are his parents–Henry and Judy Decock; a brother–Bill Decock, St. Cloud; four sisters–Katie (Tim) Kaufman, Wadena, and Theresa, Karen and Sarah, all at home; his grandmother–Jeanette Senn, Deer Creek, and his great-grandmother–Rose Diederich, Perham. There are many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents–Lawrence Senn Jr. and Anthony and Marie Decock.
