Kenneth A. Johnson
May 5, 1921–Oct. 25, 2000
Services were at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, from the David-Donehower Chapel in Detroit Lakes for Kenneth A. Johnson.
Mr. Johnson, 79, a resident of Detroit Lakes since 1954, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the Frazee Care Center.
Rev. Jim Hiner Jr. officiated at the funeral.
Military rites were by Jess-Omundson Post No. 1676, the Detroit Lakes unit of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Interment was at the Seventh-day Adventist Cemetery at rural Detroit Lakes, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Kenneth A. Johnson, son of Alfred P. and Hulda Stahl Johnson, was born near Nelson on May 5, 1921, and moved with his family to Alexandria while a child.
He graduated from Alexandria High School, moved to California and served from 1942-46 with the U. S. Army.
Upon receiving his discharge from the armed forces, he lived in St. Paul, where he worked in a munitions plant and also as a milkman.
On Jan. 22, 1947, Mr. Johnson and Ann Howard were married in St. Paul.
They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1954, where he operated a wholesale bait business and also did building construction work. He retired in 1986.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife–Ann, Detroit Lakes; four sons–David and Paul (Beverly), both Detroit Lakes; Thomas (Kathy), Winnebago, and Russell (Barbara), Pleasantville, Tenn.; a brother–Glenn, St. Paul, and a sister–Judith Johnson, Frazee. There are 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Preceding him in death were a son (Kerry, who died in 1968), his parents, a brother (Vernon) and three sisters (Virginia, Irene and Opal).
Kathryn Olson
Nov. 7, 1910–Oct. 23, 2000
A resident of Detroit Lakes since 1968, Kathryn Olson, 89, died Monday, Oct. 23, at Emmanuel Nursing Home.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, from Zion Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dan C. Abrahams officiating. Sharlotte Johnston was the organist and music was by Corrine Frank and the Zion Guild Singers.
Interment was at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Richard Beaver, Roger Mathias, Rodney Wertz, Shane Koenig, Ernest Mathias and Ryan Olson.
Kathryn Wertz, daughter of Henry and Marie Wertz, was born at Lisbon, N. D., on Nov. 7, 1910, and grew up and attended school in Ransom County, N. D.
She and Andrew A. Olson were married at Luverne on Jan. 7, 1937.
They farmed at Shell Lake, Wis., and then moved to North Dakota in 1943, where she assisted her husband in operating a general store in Stirum.
The Olsons moved to Fargo in 1956 and she was employed in the Fargo School District’s lunch program at the Agassiz School.
Upon retiring in 1968, the Olsons moved to Detroit Lakes.
Surviving are two sons–Myron (Carol) Olson, Rio Rancho, N. M., and Ronald (Lynda) Olson, Fargo; a daughter–Marlene (Bob) Koenig, Moorhead; a brother–Henry Wertz, Seattle, Wash., and two sisters–Lydia Mathias, Gwinner, N. D., and Martha Mathias, Oakes, N. D. There are three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Preceding Mrs. Olson in death were her parents, her husband (who died in 1989), a brother (Peter) and a sister (Mary Baker).
Darrell G. Kiehl.
Jan. 28, 1953–Oct. 25, 2000
Services were at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, from Lund Lutheran Church for Darrell G. Kiehl.
Mr. Kiehl, 47, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Dakota Heartland Hospital in Fargo.
Rev. John W. Lee officiated at the funeral, Jean Erickson was the organist and the soloist was Helene Hedlund.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the West-Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Scott Kiehl, Charlie Amundson, Buck Cummings, Scott McCaslin, Lowell Jorgenson and Fred Hedlund.
Darrell Kiehl, son of Andrew and Virginia Hedlund Kiehl, was born Jan. 28, 1953, in Detroit Lakes.
He attended the Bakke Elementary School, graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1971) and then earned an associate degree in agricultural management at the University of Minnesota-Crookston.
Mr. Kiehl moved to Bloomington in 1974 and worked for Road Machinery and Supplies as a mechanic in heavy equipment and returned to Detroit Lakes in 1984 and purchased his uncle’s farmstead.
He and his brother (Dennis) founded The Plant Connection in 1985 and he worked there until his death.
Mr. Kiehl enjoyed fishing, animals, pool and golf.
Surviving are two brothers–Arnold (Linda) Kiehl, Detroit Lakes, and Dennis Kiehl, Callaway; two sisters–Janet (Dean) Leitheiser, Detroit Lakes, and Sue (Mike) Cozad, Kearney, Nebr., and an honorary brother–Tim McCaslin, Detroit Lakes. There are nine nieces and nephews, a great-niece and many aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Violet L. Holbrook
May 14, 1908–Oct. 26, 2000
Violet L. Holbrook, 92, died Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Frazee Care Center.
The funeral was at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, from the Community Alliance Church in Detroit Lakes.
Officiating at the funeral were the Rev. David Sohl and Rev. Charles Nethercott.
Interment was at the Lakeside Cemetery in Frazee, with the Furey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Violet LaTour Crozier, daughter of Henry “Doc” and Ella LaTour Crozier, was born at Rowley, Ia., on May 14, 1908.
At the age of eight, she moved with her family to Hobart Township in Otter Tail County (near Frazee) and attended the Rose Lake School.
She and Gordon Holbrook were married in Minneapolis on Nov. 3, 1927.
They made their home in Frazee during the winter months and she worked for her husband’s firm (GH Holbrook Construction Co.) as a bookkeeper in the western states during the summer months.
The Holbrooks retired in 1968 and continued to live near Frazee.
Toivo A. “Mac” Makey
Feb. 28, 1920–Oct. 24, 2000
Toivo A. “Mac” Makey, 80, a former Detroit Lakes resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the North Ridge Care Center of New Hope.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, from the Golden Valley Lutheran Church.
Interment was at Lakewood Cemetery, with the Washburn McReavy Funeral Home of Robbinsdale in charge of arrangements.
Toivo A. Makey, son of Abel and Anna Kalmari Makey, was born at Callaway on Feb. 28, 1920.
He grew up in Becker County, served with the U. S. Navy during World War II and married Eva Wothe on June 15, 1947.
Mr. Maki was employed as an accountant in Detroit Lakes, moved to Minneapolis in 1957 with his family and continued to work in the accounting field.
He was a member of Golden Valley Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife–Eva; two sons–Dan (Kimberly), Mendota Heights, and Dean (Jane), Brainerd, and a sister–Irene Nelson, Maplewood. There are four grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers (Martin and George) and two sisters (Anna and Viola).
Memorials: Preferred to Alzheimer’s research, or of donor’s choice.
Elsie Eichmiller
July 3, 1915–Oct. 28, 2000
Elsie Eichmiller, 85, Vergas, died Saturday, Oct. 28, at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes.
The funeral was held Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Evans-Nordby Funeral Home in Brooklyn Center.
Interment was at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis.
The Furey Funeral Home had charge of local arrangements.
Elsie Jeanette Johnson, daughter of Frank and Tillie Anderson Johnson, was born July 3, 1915, in Fort Dodge, Ia.
She moved with her family to Milaca, where she was raised and graduated from high school, and attended college following high school graduation.
Elsie Johnson and Leonard Eichmiller were married in 1947 and made their home in Brooklyn Park. Mr. Eichmiller died in 1991 and she moved to Vergas in 1996.
Surviving are a daughter–Linda Eichmiller, Washington, D. C.; two sons–Steve (Jackie), Vergas, and Michael; three sisters–Lillian, Jean and Doris, and two brothers–Gunnar and Jerry. There are three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Eichmiller also was preceded in death by her parents, a sister (Helen) and two brothers (Oscar and Einar).
