Stella Backman
Nov. 19, 1912–Oct. 26, 2000
Stella Backman, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 26, at her home in Lake Park.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, from Eksjo Lutheran Church.
Rev. David Hurtt officiated at the funeral, Mercedes Roos was the organist and the vocalist was August Frisk.
Interment was at the Eksjo Lutheran Cemetery, with the Vigen-Wright Funeral Home of Lake Park in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Mark Haugen, Robert Osborne, Tom Haugen, Jud Komrosky, Jack Komrosky, Ryan Westlund and Jared Sanborn.
Stella Berg, daughter of John and Selma Lee Berg, was born Nov. 19, 1912, in Whitecount, Sask., Canada.
She grew up and attended school there, later lived in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and moved to the Lake Park-Hawley area in 1945.
On Nov. 14, 1954, she and Carl Backman were married at Lake Park. They farmed in Clay county and she also worked at various other jobs.
Mrs. Backman enjoyed baking, quilting and caring for her plants.
Surviving are two sons–Eugene (Sharon) Haugen, Cushing, and Lou (Janet) Haugen, Alexandria; four daughters–Ruth (Roger) Westlund, Lynn (Jeff) Sanborn and Carol Komrosky, all of Lake Park, and Darlene Osborn, St. Louis Park; three brothers–Milo (Joyce) Berg, St Paul, and Chester Berg and Lloyd Berg, both of Ada, and four sisters–Norma Frattaloni and Hazel Bongiovanni, both of St. Paul; Esther (Richard) Carlson, Stillwater, and Inga Wichern, Ada. There are 17 grandchildrena nd 19 great-grandchildren.

Selmer I. Globstad
April 15, 1919–Oct. 26, 2000
Selmer I. Globstad, 81, a former resident of the Cormorant area, died at his home in Detroit Lakes on Thursday, Oct. 26.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, from Cormorant Lutheran Church.
Rev. Lori Beck officiated at the funeral, Delaine Struble was the organist and the vocalists were Roland Sandman and DeWayne Erickson.
Interment was at the Cormorant Lutheran Cemetery, with the Vigen-Wright Funeral Home of Lake Park in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Terry Maneval, Scott Maneval, Timothy Maneval, Irving Globstad, Darwin Topp and Joel Hoffman.
Grandchildren were the honorary pallbearers.
Selmer I. Globstad, son of Ole H. and Clara Olson Globstad, was born near Cormorant on April 15, 1919.
He grew up and attended school at Cormorant and–on Sept. 27, 1942–married Irene Balken at Cormorant.
Following their marriage, they lived at Middle Cormorant Lake.
Mr. Globstad farmed for several years, then retired from farming and was employed by the Lake Park School District until his retirement from the district.
A lifetime member of Cormorant Lutheran Church, he enjoyed hunting.
Surviving are his wife–Irene, Detroit Lakes; a son–Gary (Debbie) Globstad, Lake Park; two daughters–Iris (Harold) Oss, Apple Valley, and Cherryl (Larry) Lovold, Lake Park, and a sister–Marie Olson, Seattle, Wash. There are 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Globstad in death were his parents and two brothers (Henry and Theron).

Eli Walfred Yoki
Oct. 13, 1923–Oct. 29, 2000
Eli Walfred Yoki, 77, died Sunday, Oct. 29, at Lafayette, Ind.
There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, from the Spruce Grove Apostolic Lutheran Church of Wolf Lake.
Rev. Elmer Yliniemi will officiate at the funeral and Debbie Aho will be the organist.
Interment will be at the Pickeral Lake Cemetery at Osage.
Eli Walfred Yoki, son of Eli and Maria Yliniemi Yoki, was born at Osage on Oct. 13, 1923.
Mr. Yoki served with the U. S. Navy during World War II.
He worked in the mines, first at the Iron Range in Minnesota and later in Wyoming, Idaho and Nevada. He also worked at an atomic test site before moving to Lafayette in 1998.
Eli Yoki married Helen Million and later married Silver Delano and Oleta Beerr. All three preceded him in death.
Surviving are a son–Sam (Linda) Yoki, Lafayette, Ind.; a daughter–Sandra Yoki, San Francisco, Calif., and two sisters–Ellen Korpi, Osage, and Hilma Kangas, Detroit Lakes. There are eight grandchildren.
In addition to his wives, Mr. Yoki also was preceded in death by two sons (Jack and Benjamin), four brothers (Jalmer, Walter, August and Reino) and four sisters (Aili Carlson, Elma Hendrickson, Lila Harvala and Tekla Niemi).

Raymond O. Matson
Oct. 22, 1922–Oct. 31, 2000
Raymond O. Matson, 78, Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Fargo.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, from Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Ken Vollmers officiating.
Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Military rites will be by Jess-Omundson Post No. 1676, the Detroit Lakes unit of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Raymond Matson, son of Edwin and Elida Wasfaret Matson, was born Oct. 22, 1922, in Hagen Township (near Ulen) of Clay County, graduated from Felton High School and then attended Dakota Business College.
On Dec. 5, 1942, Mr. Matson and Marian Stevenson were married in Moorhead.
He served with the U. S. Army in 1945-46, saw duty for 13 months in Okinawa and, upon being discharged from the armed forces, he and his wife lived in Moorhead until moving to rural Felton in 1954.
Mr. Matson was employed by Shirley-Onstad, Inc., of Fargo during that time and then they moved to a farm near Floyd Lake north of Detroit Lakes in 1960. He continued to be employed by Shirley-Onstad until retiring in 1974.
He enjoyed hunting, picking chokecherries, plums and acorns and was an avid bird watcher and feeder of birds.
Surviving are his wife–Marian, Detroit Lakes; two sons–Clifford (Shirley), Canon City, Conn., and Scott, Detroit Lakes; two daughters–Kathy (Gayle) Newman, Moorhead, and Connie (Dale) Frank, Detroit Lakes, and a sister–Arnola Oren, Felton. There are seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Matson in death were his parents, a granddaughter, a sister (Harriet Kading) and three brothers (Marvin, Lawrence and Ernest).
Visitation: Thursday, Nov. 2, 4-7 p.m., David-Donehower Funeral Home and also one hour prior to funeral at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Elise M. Quale
June 16, 1902–Oct. 25, 2000
Elise M. Quale, 98, died at Emmanuel Nursing Home on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
There will be a graveside service at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, at the Lakeview Cemetery in Nevis, with the Rev. Daniel A. Babine officiating.
The West-Kjos Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Elise Marie Lee, daughter of Hans and Bertha Lee, was born at Lillihamer, Norway on June 16, 1902.
She moved with her family to Divide County, N. D., in 1906, where she grew up and attended school and later worked as a cook in Minot, N. D., and in nursing homes in Minot and in Williston, N. D.
Elise Lee and Obert Quale were married at Williston in 1952 and made their home in Williston and then at Tea Neck, N. J.
They moved from New Jersey to Elbow Lake, where they farmed a number of years, and then moved to Minneapolis, where he was employed by the Augustana Nursing Home.
Upon retiring, they moved to Nevis and later to Detroit Lakes.
Surviving are two sisters–Marget Linnertz, Bismarck, N. D., and Inga Graupe, Moosejaw, Sask., Canada, and two brothers–Harold Lee, Denver, Colo., and Melvin Lee, Lebanon, Ore.
Preceding Mrs. Quale in death were her husband, her parents, three brothers (Otto, Elmer and Christian) and a sister (Ragna).

Gertrude M. Hanson
Sept. 11, 1903–Oct. 31, 2000
Gertrude M. Hanson, 97, Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, at Emmanuel Nursing Home, where she had resided since 1995.
The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, from Immanuel Lutheran Church near Shell Lake.
Officiating were Vicki Marthaler and deacon Jim Thomas.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the David-Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Gertrude Anderson, daughter of Ole and Anna Halvorson Anderson, was born Sept. 11, 1903, at Madison, graduated from Madison High School and attended Madison Normal School.
As a young woman, she moved with her family to Spruce Grove Township of Becker County (near Wolf Lake).
She married William Hanson at Wolf Lake on Oct. 16, 1929, and they farmed in Toad Lake Township until moving into Detroit Lakes in 1985.
Mrs. Hanson was the organist and choir director for Immanuel Lutheran Church for over 50 years.
Surviving are three sons - Deane (Bonnie) Packwood, Wash.; William Jr. (Opal), Osage, and Richard (Sandy), Detroit Lakes; a daughter–Susie (Jim) Thomas, Detroit Lakes; a brother–Nels Anderson, Ely, and a sister–Cora Roberts, Menahga. There are 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband (who died in 1988), a great-grandson, her parents, two sisters (Manga and Agnes) and two brothers (Ole and Jens).
