Percy N. Bliss Jr.
May 26, 1922 - Dec. 29, 2000
Percy N. Bliss Jr., 77, died Friday, Dec. 29, at his home near Park Rapids.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, from Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids, with Rev. Jake Dryhaug and Rev. Gene Broughton officiating.
The Jones - Pearson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Percy N. Bliss, son of Percy and Mae Jones Bliss, was born at Sioux Falls, S. D., on May 26, 1922, attended school and grew up there, served in the U. S. Navy from 1941 - 46 and then served three years in the U. S. Army Reserve.
On June 11, 1955, Percy Bliss and Luella Simon were married at Puposky.
Mr. Bliss took employment with the Rueter Furniture firm in 1957, became deputy city assessor in Bemidji and then - in 1968 - became Hubbard County assessor. He joined the Century 21 real estate firm in 1980 and continued with the company until retiring in 1996.
A member of Calvary Lutheran Church, he was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post No. 212 in Park Rapids.
Surviving are his wife - Luella, Park, Rapids; a daughter - Karlyn (Ross) Hansen, Berthoud, Colo.; a son - Karsten (Joanne) Bliss, St. Cloud; two brothers - Douglas (Jeanette) Bliss, Gilbert, and Kendall Bliss, Faribault, and a sister - Kathleen (Clint) Barfknecht, Eveleth. There are five grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother (Ernest) and a sister (Juanita Morrison).

Raymond G. Wothe
June 2, 1949 - Dec. 31, 2000
Rites were at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee for Raymond G. Wothe.
Mr. Wothe, 51, Frazee, died on Sunday, Dec. 31, at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes.
Fr. Joe DeCrans officiated at the funeral.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the Furey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Raymond George Wothe, son of Melvin and Agnes Erdman Wothe, was born at Detroit Lakes on June 2, 1949.
He was raised and attended school in Frazee, graduated from Frazee High School (Class of 1967) and then served with the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
On Feb. 15, 1969, Mr. Wothe and Kathryn Osterman were married in Frazee.
Upon being discharged from the U. S. Navy, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and was stationed at the USAF Base in Grand Forks, N. D., from 1974 - 78.
The Wothes moved to New York Mills after his discharge from the USAF and he attended the Wadena Technical College.
They moved to Ennis, Mont., in 1979, where he was employed by the Three Rivers Telephone Co., and returned to Frazee in 1984, where he was with the Daggett Truck Line as a driver and dispatcher. He then was an independent truck driver until last August and recently had joined the BTD firm in Detroit Lakes.
Mr. Wothe enjoyed hunting, camping, snowmobiling and gardening.
Surviving are his wife - Kay, Frazee; a daughter - Katie, Frazee; two sons - Luke (Jamie) and Ty, both Frazee; his mother - Agnes, Frazee; two brothers - Russell, Traverse City, Mich., and Neil (Julie), Vergas, and two sisters - Susan (Jan) Kolle, Apple Valley, and Carole (Paul) Johnson, Pelican Rapids.
Preceding him in death were two sons (Heath and Nick, who both died in 1981) and his father (who died in 1984).

Richard A. Wilke
Richard A. Wilke, 55, died Friday, Jan. 5, at his home in Detroit Lakes.
Arrangements are pending, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge.

Hubertina M. "Peggy" Anderson
July 21, 1916 - Jan. 1, 2001
Hubertina M. "Peggy" Anderson, 84, a former Detroit Lakes resident, died Monday, Jan. 1, in Mission Viejo, Calif.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, from Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with Fr. Jerry Rogers officiating.
Interment will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Hubertina Marion Keller, daughter of Hubert and Clara Vaviatd Keller, was born at Glen Ulin, N. D., on July 21, 1916.
She and Walter Anderson were married in Fargo on June 6, 1941, and moved to Detroit Lakes in 1946.
Mrs. Anderson served as secretary at the Rossman Elementary School for 18 years.
Mr. Anderson died in 1987 and she married Paul Sherlin in 1991. Mr. Sherlin died in 1995.
Surviving are a daughter - Carol (Steve) Todd, Mission Viejo, Calif., and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she also was preceded in death by a son (Craig), two daughters (Lynn Johnston and Kari Anderson) and a sister (Ann Carter).
Visitation: One hour prior to funeral at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Arnold M. Boswell
Nov. 3, 1939 - Jan. 1, 2001
Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, from St. Columba Episcopal Church in White Earth for Arnold M. Boswell.
Mr. Boswell, 61, Callaway, died at his home on Monday, Jan. 1.
Fr. Mike Smith will officiate at the funeral.
Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Callaway, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Arnold Boswell, son of Fred and Wilhelmina Boswell, was born Nov. 3, 1939, in White Earth.
He was raised and attended school in White Earth and moved to Minneapolis in 1955, where he was employed as a roofer and machinist.
On Feb. 2, 1985, Arnold Boswell and Betty Bunker were married in Minneapolis. They moved to Callaway in 1998.
Surviving are his wife - Betty, Callaway; a step - son - Charles Peake, Minneapolis; three step - daughters - Florence Peake, Callaway, and Donna Peake and Judith Peake, both Minneapolis; four brothers - Charles, Portland, Ore.; Lowell, Minneapolis; Fred, Federal Dam, and David (Amy), Red Lake, and three sisters - Hazel Boswell and Carol Staufer, both of Bemidji, and Thelma Hendrickson, Monticello. There are several step - grandchildren and step - great - grandchildren.
Visitation: Thursday, Jan. 4, 5 p.m. until time of funeral at St. Columba Episcopal Church.

Robert Westby
Jan. 24, 1909 - Jan. 4, 2001
Robert Westby, 91, died Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 8, from Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen.
Rev. Jeff McCracken and Rev. Loren Fevig officiated at the funeral, Carol Lockhart was the organist and the vocalist was Kristi Fevig.
Interment was at Bethlehem Lutheran North Cemetery, with the Anderson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Greg Zillmer, Doyle Fevig, Dwight Fevig, Jerry Waller, Mark Huseby, Josh Fevig and Jason Fevig.
Robert Westby, son of Julius and Sophie Westby, was born Jan. 24, 1909, in Madison, S. D.
His mother died when he was two years of age and, at the age of six, he moved with his father to a farm east of Ulen. He attended the District No. 54 School.
On Oct. 10, 1934, Mr. Westby and Sylvia Huseby were married at rural Twin Valley and lived and farmed in Walworth Township of Becker County for 44 years until moving into Ulen in 1978. His grandson (Dwight Fevig) purchased the farm and Mr. Fevig helped in the farming operation until the age of 90.
Mr. Westby served on the council at Aspelund Church, on the school board, on the Walworth Township board and also enjoyed working at the Ulen Turkey Barbecue and woodworking.
Surviving are his wife - Sylvia; a daughter - Emelyn Fevig, Ulen, and a sister - Cora Waller, Ulen. There are three grandchildren and seven great - grandchildren.
In addition to his mother, he also was preceded in death by his father and two brothers (Clifford and Milton).

Jerome "Jerry" Berning
July 27, 1915 - Jan. 5, 2001
Jerome "Jerry" Berning, 85, a resident of Wadena since 1970, died at Shady Lane Nursing Home in Wadena on Friday, Jan. 5.
The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 8, from St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Wadena, with Fr. Tom Knoblach officiating.
Interment was at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery at Beardsley, with the Bielema Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Military rites were by August Altheide American Legion Post No. 302.
Jerome Berning, son of George H. and Amelia Koessler Berning, was born at Lismore in Nobles County on July 27, 1915.
During World War II, he served with the U. S. Army and saw duty in the Aleutian Islands and in the European Theater.
Mr. Berning and Elizabeth Bower were married at Beardsley on July 29, 1946, and farmed there until 1965 when they moved into town and he was employed at the Skelly Station until moving to Park Rapids.
They moved to Wadena in 1970 and he was employed as a custodian by the Wadena School District until retiring in 1980.
Mr. Berning was a member of August Altheide American Legion Post No. 302 at Beardsley and of Elmer Goche Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3922 in Wadena.
Surviving are his wife - Betty; a daughter - Cheryl (Tom) Speed, Wadena; two sons - Ronald (Luanne) Berning, Detroit Lakes, and Darrell (Debra) Berning, Watertown, S. D.; a son - in - law - Brad Speed, Wadena; a sister - Verna (George) Holden, Sartell, and a brother - Joseph (Gen) Berning, Graceville. There are nine grandchildren and 10 great - grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a daughter (Mary), two brothers (Lawrence and Lee) and a sister (Leona).
