Bertha Marie (nee Helmke) Rindal
Bertha Marie (nee Helmke) Rindal of Proctor died Sun., May 5, 2002 at Lakeshore Lutheran Home. She was 99.

She was born June 13, 1902 in West Bend, Iowa. She was the wife of the late Edward Rindal and the devoted mother of William (Ann) Hill of Milwaukee, Wisc., Edward (Bonnie) Hill of Rogersville, Mo., Mary Lou Clough of Safety Harbor, Fla., and Richard (Sharon) Hill of Las Vegas, Nev. She was a grandmother of 13 and a great-grandmother of 17. Mrs. Rindal had been a Proctor Journal subscriber since 1949.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and an announcement will be made. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

William A. Horner
Services were held last week for William A. Horner. The Saginaw resident passed away Sun., Apr. 28, 2002 in Duluth. He was 77.

He was born in Nevada, Ia. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He retired from the U.S. Steel Corporation.

He is survived by his children Grace, Randy, Joy, Scott and Leisa, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Interment was at Forest Hills Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Dorothy M. Munter
Bud Lee of Proctor is saddened by the loss of his sister, Dorothy M. Munter. She died unexpectedly on Mon., May 6 in Cloquet. The Carlton resident was 80.

She was born in Atkinson, Minn., and was a member of Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carlton. She was an avid sports fan.

Dorothy is also survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two sisters, many nieces and nephews, and her pet Alley Cat.

Visitation will continue today (Thurs.) from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service at Bethesda Evangelical Lutheran Church, 204 5th St. No., Carlton. Interment will be in Atkinson Cemetery.

Mary M. Zervas
Jeanne A. Hansen of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of her sister, Mary M. Zervas. She died Sun., May 5, 2002 in a Duluth Hospice. She was 75.

She was born in Duluth and worked in the Dietary Department at St. Mary’s until she retired after 42 years. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, American Diabetes Association, St. Margaret’s Guild, and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

She is also survived by another sister, an uncle, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today (Thurs.) at 10 a.m. in St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Charles Flynn officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Dan Devine
Dan Devine, an athletic kid who grew up and graduated from Proctor and went on to become a head football coach for 22 years at three colleges and for four years with the Green Bay Packers, died last Thursday at his Tempe Ariz. home. He was 77.

The cause was complications from heart surgery 15 months ago.

Devine, a star athlete at Proctor and UMD, was born Dec. 23, 1924 in Augusta, Wis. He grew up in Proctor and was a 1942 PHS graduate. At Proctor, Devine was a four-year, four-sport varsity letterman. As a freshman quarterback for the Rails, he was known as “The Proctor Flash”. He was head coach at Arizona State from 1955-57 and at Missouri from 1958-70. He was head coach and general manager for the Packers from 1971-74 and head coach at Notre Dame from 1975-80.

His college career record was 172-57-9. His teams won seven of their 10 bowl games. In 1977 his Notre Dame team won the unofficial national title. Under Devine the Irish were 53-16-1 and won three bowl games. In 1985, the first year he was eligible, he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Devine credited his Proctor coach Harold Johnson for his coaching style.

After coaching, Devine returned to Arizona State to become chief executive of its main booster club and then director of a new campus program to combat substance abuse. He later became director at Missouri.

The last time he was at Proctor was in 1992 when he returned as a commencement speaker at UMD.

Devine and his wife Joanne had seven children, 16 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Joanne died in Dec. 2002. He is also survived by three brothers and three sisters

The funeral was last Friday in Phoenix.

Mary Anne Nena Rapolz
Mary Anne Nena Rapolz, who was raised in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School, died Mon., May 6, 2002 in Ashland. She was 69.

The Ashland resident was born July 4, 1932 in Duluth, Minn., the daughter of Emory W. and Margaret (Redmayne) Herendeen.

She was raised in Proctor where she attended and graduated from Proctor High School. She then attended the Duluth Business University. She moved to Ashland in 1953. Mary Ann was employed at St. Anthony’s Nursing Home, which later became the Court Manor Nursing Home in Ashland. She worked as a certified nurse’s aide and for ten years as a receptionist and payroll clerk at the nursing home. Mary Ann married Joseph Rapolz on April 5, 1967.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph; children Mark Moore of Benoit, Wis., Michael (Barbara) Moore of Mt. Washington, Ken., Dennis (Dorothy) Moore of Wausau, Wis., and Peggy (Earl) Kerr of Marietta, Geo., five grandchildren, a sister, two brothers, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a niece and a nephew.

Virginia A. Johnson
Boyd Johnson of Saginaw is mourning the death of his mother, Virginia A. Johnson. She was 83.

The Virginia resident was born in Virginia. She grew up and attended school in Virginia, graduating from Roosevelt High School. She also attended Virginia Junior College. On Sept. 4, 1943 she married Carl Johnson in Virginia, where they made their home. She was a member of the First Covenant Church of Virginia and was on the City of Virginia election board.

Survivors also include another son, seven grandchildren; three great- grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Cook Community Cemetery.

Gregory Benton
Mae and Emery Benton are mourning the loss of their son, Gregory Benton. He died, Sat., Apr. 27, 2002 in Melbourne, Florida. He was 49.

Greg worked as an Associate Director of Transportation Communications International Union in Rockville, Maryland before retiring eight years ago due to ill health.

He is also survived by sons Michael of Ft. Lauderdale and Nickolas of Ft. Benning, Georgia, brother Terry of France and Todd of Duluth.

A private memorial was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Lorene Erickson
Lorene Erickson, who lived in Proctor for over 34 years and served as a girl scout leader, died Thurs., May 16, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. She was 83.

Winona Lorene Bishop was born Dec. 17, 1918 in Percevil, Iowa to Brethe (Smith) and Donald Bishop. They moved to the Finlayson area shortly after her birth.

She attended Finlayson and Sandstone area schools, and graduated from Sandstone High School. She married Helmer Erickson in 1936. They lived in the Sandstone area, then Wrenshall, Minn. and Brook Park. In 1964 they moved to Boundary Avenue in Proctor, where she lived until health problems forced her to move in 1999. During this period, she and Helmer stayed in Escondido, Calif. for five years while caring for her father.

While living in Brook Park, Lorene worked in the local grocery store. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth as a nursing assistant for ten years, retiring in 1975. She and Helmer had been very active in the Grange in the Brook Park area and on state and national levels. She had been a 4-H leader in Brook Park and a Girl Scout leader in Proctor. She was active in the Former Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, now known as the Community of Christ Church, in Duluth and Proctor. She volunteered at Lake Haven Nursing Home while Helmer was a resident and for about a year after his death. Among her favorite things were fishing the Big Sandy area and Lowell Larson’s barn dances at Rat Lake.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Helmer in 1996, her daughter Kathleen in 1944, and her brother Ralph in 1995.

Survivors include her son Allen of Duluth, daughters June (Lowell) Rudd of Proctor and Jackie (Bill) Beamish of Tonka Bay, Minn., grandsons Craig (Kristin) Rudd and Christopher (Leslie) Rudd, all of Proctor, and Martin Beamish of Tonka Bay, four great-grandchildren, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Verner and Mabel Erickson of Brook Park, several nieces and nephews, and her caregiver of three years Diane Zengel of Duluth.

Burial was in Spring Park Cemetery, Sandstone, Minn.

Robert Spicer
Robert Spicer, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1938, died Thurs., May 16, 2002 in Duluth. He was 82.

The former Ugstad Rd. resident was born in Superior. He had worked for the Seagull CCC Camp during the 1930’s, for Botton-Swanby Chevrolet, and for EM Trucks from which he retired in 1979.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter.

Survivors include his wife Wilma, sons Steven (Sandra) of Chisholm, Minn., Robert James and Mark, both of Superior, Wis., daughters Sharon Mcintyre of Lakehurst, NJ, Lorraine Vandemark of Harlingen, Tex., his brother Donald (Elanore) of Wright, Minn., 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a special friend Annie, and granddaughter-in-law Kathy Boyle and family of Duluth.

Burial was in Canosia Cemetery.
