Alice Schwarzrock
June 5, 1909 - Jan. 9, 2001
Alice Schwarzrock, 91, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the Frazee Care Center, where she had been a resident since 1997.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Evergreen.
Rev. Anthony Cloose officiated at the funeral, Carrie Mayfield was the organist and the soloist was Donna Galbrecht.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the Furey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Dennis Schwarzrock Jr., Douglas Schwarzrock, DuWayne Schwarzrock, Earl Disse, Dan Feldt and Cory Pagenkopf.
Alice Christina Schiroo, daughter of Ferdinand and Clara Wendtland Schiroo, was born at Brownton on June 5, 1909.
She was raised and attended school at Brownton and married Edwin Schwarzrock at Brownton on Nov. 8, 1929.
The Schwarzrocks moved to Spuce Grove Township of Becker County in the 1930s, where they farmed, and later moved to Toad Lake Township, where they farmed for many years.
Surviving are a son - Dennis (Jeanette) Schwarzrock Sr., Frazee; a brother - George (LaVerna) Schiroo, Brownton, and a sister - Linda Draeger, Brownton. There are three grandsons and three great - grandchildren.
Preceding Mrs. Schwarzrock in death were her husband (who died Aug. 13, 1968), her parents and a sister (Rosella Quast).

Louise L. Jammes
Louise L. Jammes, 69, died at her home at Otsego on Saturday, Jan. 6.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11, from the Dare Funeral Home in Elk River.
Surviving are her husband - Harold "Smoky"; a son - Harold Jr. "Butch," Otsego; a daughter - Sue, Maple Grove; a brother - Julian (Betty) Johnson, Hawley, and three sisters - Lillian (Max) Gruhl, Hawley, and Alice Gross and Marlys Christianson, both Detroit Lakes. There are three granddaughters.
Preceding her in death were her parents (Edwin and Ida Johnson), two brothers (Carl and Ron) and two sisters (Edla Quam and Esther Purrier).

Helen E. Vogt
Dec. 27, 1937 - Jan. 9, 2001
Helen E. Vogt, 63, a former resident of Lake Park and Detroit Lakes, died at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, from Park Lutheran Church at rural Lake Park, with the Rev. Douglas Lindgren officiating.
Burial of ashes will be at the church Cemetery, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Helen Ness, daughter of Henry and Esther Ness, was born Dec. 27, 1937, at Lake Park.
She grew up and attended school at Lake Park, graduated from Lake Park High School (Class of 1956) and married Russ Vogt on Feb. 4, 1956.
While they lived in Detroit Lakes, she was a nurse’s aide at St. Mary’s Hospital and also worked at the Red Owl Bakery and as a sales clerk at A & B Supply.
Mrs. Vogt graduated from the Detroit Lakes Technical College in 1983, moved to West Fargo in 1984 and worked at Menard’s in Fargo until retiring last April.
She enjoyed bowling and travel.
Surviving are her mother - Esther Ness, Lake Park; four daughters - Diane (Stacy) Heer, Kenosha, Wis.; Sharon Bennett, Milwaukee, Wis.; and Linda Jones, and Roxanne (Neil) Sonnenberg, both Detroit Lakes; a son - Gerald Vogt, Detroit Lakes; a sister - Beverly (Bruce) Brinkerhoff, Florida, and three brothers - Elroy (Shirley) Ness and Lloyd (Kathy) Ness, both Lake Park, and Orris (Georgia) Ness, Minneapolis. There are 11 grandchildren and three great - grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her father (Henry Ness), a special friend (Ron Wallum) and a grandson.
Visitation: Monday, Jan. 15, one hour prior to memorial service at Park Lutheran Church.

Albert B. Winings
Aug. 3, 1923 - Jan. 10, 2001
Albert B. Winings, 77, Detroit Lakes, died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, from Eksjo Lutheran Church west of Lake Park, with Rev. David Hurtt to officiate.
Interment will be at the church Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Albert Bacon Winings, son of George and Lura Bacon Winings, was born at Decatur, Ill., on Aug. 3, 1923, and moved with his family at the age of 11 to Arthur, N. D., where he attended school.
Following school, he farmed with his family and also attended a trade school in Arthur, where he studied welding.
On Jan. 20, 1945, Albert Winings and June Murch were married in Jamestown, N. D.
They farmed near Arthur and he attended the Reisch Auction School in Mason City, Ia.
The Winings moved to Lake Park in 1968, where they farmed and raised beef cattle. They also owned and operated the Lake Park Cafe and operated the Lake Park Roller Rink for five years and Mr. Winings worked at the David Larson farm.
They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1976, where he worked for 11 years at Detroit Mountain, also worked for R & R Transportation at Audubon and helped various area farmers.
A member of Eksjo Lutheran Church, he was a volunteer at the Detroit Lakes Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed welding, woodworking, repairing things and was a professional story teller.
Surviving are his wife - June, Detroit Lakes; a son - Douglas (Pamela), Detroit Lakes; a daughter - Sandy (Jack) Berg, Audubon; two brothers - Charles (Ruby), Trenton, Mo., and Howard (Evelyn), Rogers, Ark., and three sisters - Ruth Sharp and Pauline (Kent) Hodgson, both of Fargo, and Hester Swiney, Columbus, Nebr. There are six grandchildren and two great - grandchildren.
Visitation: Sunday, Jan. 14, 5 - 8 p.m., David - Donehower Funeral Home. Also one hour prior to funeral at Eksjo Lutheran Church.

Kathryn J. Karsnia
June 19, 1917 - Jan. 7, 2001
Kathryn J. Karsnia, 83, formerly of Frazee and Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, Jan. 7, at the Ramsey Nursing Home in St. Paul.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, from Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with Fr. Jerry Rogers officiating.
Interment was at Holy Rosary Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Mike Friesen, Paul Buchmayer, Tim Bergen, Fritz Karsnia, Phil Karsnia, Peter Gorman and Tony Karsnia.
Kathryn J. Muench, daughter of Joseph and Mary Brown Muench, was born June 19, 1917, at Mountain Iron.
She was raised and attended school at Mountain Iron, graduated from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul and then taught in the Frazee Public Schools, first from 1939 - 41 and later in 1958 - 59.
During World War II, she taught at Alango and later was a substitute teacher in Browerville.
On May 21, 1941, Kathryn Muench and Frank L. Karsnia were married in Frazee.
They lived at Frazee until moving to Browerville in 1967 and then to Detroit Lakes in 1975. Mr. Karsnia died in 1979 and she moved to St. Cloud in 1985 and later moved to St. Paul.
While an area resident, she served on the Becker County Welfare Board, the Northern Pines Mental Health Board and also helped in many county dairy activities. She belonged to the Christian Mothers and the Catholic Daughters.
Surviving are three sons - Mike (Deb), Fergus Falls; David (Maureen), Detroit Lakes, and Tim (Dohna), Atwater, Calif., and four daughters - Mary Friesen, Grants Pass, Ore.; Ruby (Brian) Buchmayer, Pine Springs; Fran (Larry) Bergen, Waite Park, and Julie (Jeff) Melville, St. Cloud. There are 16 grandchildren and 14 great - grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Karsnia also was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers (Fred and Arthur).

Richard A. Wilke
Feb. 16, 1945 - Jan. 5, 2001
Services were at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 8, from First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes for Richard A. Wilke.
Mr. Wilke, 55, died at his home in Detroit Lakes on Friday, Jan. 5.
Rev. David Peterson officiated at the funeral, Juliette Gunderson was the organist and the soloist was Clint Felker.
Interment was at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Dean Denstedt, Denny Eidenschink, Arnie Olson, Steve Eidenshink, Norbert Eidenschink and Maury Gagnier.
The honorary pallbearers were Gerard Eidenschink, Kenny Anderson, Butch Brogren and Scott Lewis.
Richard A. Wilke, son of Milton and Evelyn Hanson Wilke, was born at Detroit Lakes on Feb. 16, 1945.
He grew up in Detroit Lakes, graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1963) and married Barbara L. Morris at Detroit Lakes on Aug. 7, 1965.
Mr. Wilke was employed by Snappy Air Distribution Products from 1965 until the time of his death.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling.
Surviving are his wife - Barbara; a son - Travis, Detroit Lakes, and a sister - Marlys Schmelz, Perham.
Preceding him in death were his parents.

Fenton Van Wert
July 21, 1933 - Jan. 7, 2001
Fenton Van Wert, 67, White Earth, died at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes on Sunday, Jan. 7.
Mr. Van Wert also was known as Ay - Man - Way - Wi - Dun - Bin - Ay - Sha, Sound of the Thunderbird.
Traditional visitations were held at the Van Wert residence in White Earth on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 9 - 10.
There also will be a visitation from 5 - 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Division of Indian Welfare, Council of Churches, 1671 Summit Ave. in St. Paul.
Interment will be Friday, Jan. 12, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Fenton Virgil "Lummy" Van Wert, son of Sylvester and Charlotte Wright DeFault Van Wert, was born at White Earth on July 21, 1933.
He grew up and attended school at White Earth and in St. Paul and then attended the University of Minnesota for two years.
Mr. Van Wert taught at the American Indian O. I. C. School in Minneapolis and last served as acting director of the St. Paul chapter of the American Indian Movement.
During the Korean War, he served with the U. S. Army. He returned to White Earth in 1992.
Surviving are four sons - Fenton Jr. (Mary Day), also known as Ronnie of Mille Lacs; Dean (Crystal), White Earth, and James (Laura) and Jason, all of St. Paul; a daughter - Monica, St. Paul, and three brothers - Pierre (Pete), St. Paul; Sylvester (Snooky), Milwaukee, Wis., and Ona (Stan) Richard, Wyoming. There are 17 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
