John Friedrich Wettels
March 5, 1916 - Jan. 4, 2001
John Friedrich Wettels, 84, a lifelong resident of the Ponsford area, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids on Thursday, Jan. 4.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, from the Jones - Pearson Chapel in Park Rapids.
Rev. Ted Barthels officiated at the funeral and Mark Tretbar was the organist.
Interment was at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery near Ponsford, with the Jones - Pearson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Tom Wettels, Jason Wettels, Seth Jones, Dean Christianson, Doug Christianson, Paul Tretbar, Don Tretbar and Lonny Holmer.
The honorary pallbearers included Grant Schmaus, Don Rooney, Lewie DeWandler, David Christianson, Roger Weaver, Lloyd Tretbar, Maurice Tretbar, Lawrence Sunran, Gary Pritchard, Jeff Gilbertson, Jeremy Gilbertson and Lowell Sperling.
Military honors were by the All Veterans Memorial Burial Team.
John Wettels, son of John and Meta Blauert Wettels, was born March 5, 1916, near Ponsford, attended the Round Lake Country School near his home and helped on the farm and did some logging as a young man.
During World War II, he served with the U. S. armed forces and saw duty overseas.
He returned to the Ponsford area upon being discharged from the armed forces and took over the operation of the family farm.
On Dec. 5, 1946, Mr. Wettels and Gladys Leona Stephens were married at Height of Land.
In addition to maintaining his farm, Mr. Wettels operated a road grader for Becker County and various townships for 50 years
A longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church WELS, he served as a supervisor of Round Lake Township for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his wife - Gladys, Ponsford; two daughters - Barbara (Keith) Gilbertson, Burkburnett, Tex., and Cheryl (Jay) Jones, Fargo; three sons - Jerry (Darlene) Wettels and Jim (Karen) Wettels, both Ponsford, and Russell (Cindy) Wettels, Detroit Lakes; four sisters - Alvina Presler, Great Falls, Mont.; Luella Pritchard, Park Rapids; Alma (Lawrence) McCarren, Vancouver, Wash., and Mary Ann (Gunder) Svendesen, Prescott Valley, Ariz., and a brother - Harold Wettels, Center, N. D. There are 12 grandchildren, four great - grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Mr. Wettels in death were his parents, three brothers (Otto, Irvin and Carl), a sister (Ida Stephens) and two grandchildren.

Gertrude M. Olson
Feb. 24, 1911 - Jan. 10, 2001
Gertrude M. Olson, 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen, where she had been a resident since last October.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, from Salem Lutheran Church in Hitterdal.
Rev. Jim Hulberg will officiate at the funeral, Mercedes Roos will be the organist and the vocalist will be Jason Stout.
Interment will be at Salem East Cemetery, with the Vigen - Wright Funeral Home of Hawley in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Mark Anderson, John Anderson, Daniel Anderson, Michael Anderson, Richard Olson Jr., Robert Olson, Wayne Olson, Matthew Rippy, Gary Chelin and Dennis Chelin.
Granddaughters will be the honorary pallbearers.
Gertrude M. Grupp, daughter of John and Mathilda Roseneau Grupp, was born near Ulen on Feb. 24, 1911.
She grew up and attended rural school near Ulen, attended Ulen High School and married Ray Olson at Ulen on July 19, 1931.
They farmed near Ulen, later moved to a farm by Hitterdal and she worked at the O. K. Diner in Hawley and at the Castle Garden Inn at Hitterdal.
The Olsons spent the winter months in Arizona for 11 years while living in Hitterdal.
Mr. Olson died Aug. 26, 1986, and she lived in Hitterdal and then lived for 10 years with her daughter and son - in - law before moving to Viking Manor.
Surviving are three sons - Walter (Arlene) Olson, Dilworth; Glenn (Ruby) Olson, Seattle, Wash., and Richard (Marsha) Olson, Hawley; four daughters - Marian Chelin, Grass Valley, Calif.; Caryel Ruby (Lloyd) Anderson, Hawley; Mary Lou (Floyd) Anderson, Hitterdal, and Linda (Harold) Rippy, Audubon, and a sister - Amelia Borneman, Spanaway, Wash. There are 19 grandchildren, 33 great - grandchildren and nine great - great - grandchildren.
Visitation: Sunday, Jan. 14, 4 - 6 p.m., Vigen - Wright Funeral Home in Hawley, with a prayer service at 6. Also one hour prior to funeral at Salem Lutheran Church.

Evelyn F. Torgerson
Jan. 22, 1928 - Jan. 7, 2001
Evelyn F. Torgerson, 72, died Sunday, Jan. 7, at her home in Detroit Lakes.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, from First Baptist Church.
The David - Donehower Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Evelyn Frankie Harrison, daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Roxie Duncan Harrison, was born Jan. 22, 1928, in Blytheville, Ark.
She grew up and attended school in Blytheville and moved to California, where she graduated from high school.
On May 11, 1946, she and Robert Torgerson were married in Saticoy, Calif.
She worked in various jobs in California before moving to Missouri and later moved to Minneapolis, where she worked in clerical and accounting positions.
She retired from the Sherburne County Social Services department in 1996 and moved to Detroit Lakes. Her husband died Oct. 16, 1996.
In Detroit Lakes, Mrs. Torgerson was secretary of the Detroit Lakes area AARP, taught the 55 Alive course and volunteered as a Guardian Angel.
Mrs. Torgerson also was a member of First Baptist Church in Detroit Lakes, taught Sunday School and was a children’s story - teller.
Surviving are a son - Andrew (Debbie), Detroit Lakes, and a sister - Elizabeth (Joe) Corbett, Casitas Springs, Calif. There are seven grandchildren and 10 great - grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she also was preceded in death by her parents, a son (Robert "Bobbie," who died in 1967) and a brother (Albert, who died in infancy).
Visitation: Friday, Jan. 12, 12 noon to 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church.

Joyce E. Fleischman - Van Raden
Jan. 31, 1934 - Jan. 8, 2001
Joyce E. Fleischman - Van Raden, 66, formerly of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, Jan. 8, at the Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11, from St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Moorhead.
Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Moorhead, with the Wright Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Joyce E. Fleischman - Van Raden was born in Moorhead on Jan. 31, 1934, grew up and attended school in Moorhead and lived in California and Washington from 1953 - 70, where she was employed in the food industry.
From 1970 - 84, she lived in Detroit Lakes and owned BJ Ceramic Shop and operated a group home.
She worked for Lutheran Social Services in Moorhead as a house parent from 1985 - 87 and retired due to health reasons in 1987.
She enjoyed ceramics, sewing and reading.
Surviving are two sons - Mike (Trish) Olson, Plymouth, and Jerry (Marsha) Parsons, Sioux City, Ia.; two daughters - Leslie Schermerhorn, Moorhead, and Susan (Dan) Durge, Lorain, Ohio; a step - son - John Fleischman, Los Angeles, Calif.; a step - daughter - Julie Abernathy, Stockton, Calif.; her mother - Florence Van Raden, Moorhead, and four brothers - Donald (Theresa), James and Charlie (Pat), all of Moorhead, and Richard (Sharon), Bend, Ore. There are five grandchildren.
Visitation: Wednesday, Jan. 10, 5 - 7 p.m., Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead, with prayer service at 7. Also one hour prior to funeral at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.

Basil Raymond Rowland.
April 20, 1921 - Jan. 7, 2001
Rites will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, from St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Park Rapids for Basil Raymond Rowland.
Mr. Rowland, 79, Menahga, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids on Sunday, Jan. 7.
Fr. Rick Boyd will officiate at the funeral.
The Jones - Pearson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Dennis "Denny" Rowland, Wallace "Wally" Rowland, Jim Rowland, William "Billy" Rowland, Duanne Becker, Dale Becker and Dave Becker.
Grandchildren will be the honorary pallbearers.
Military honors will be by the All Veterans Burial Team.
Basil Rowland, son of William and Louise Grams Rowland, was born April 20, 1921, in Grey Eagle, attended country school near his home and moved with his family to the Park Rapids area in 1927, where the family farmed in Straight River Township.
He served with the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was at the 2nd Air Base Depot in England for 22 months when he repaired and modified 25 types of aircraft.
Mr. Rowland returned to the Park Rapids area upon receiving his discharge from the armed forces and married Adeline E. Wilmes in Park Rapids on April 25, 1949. They farmed in Straight River Township following their marriage.
He also was involved in power line construction, insurance sales and adjusting and raising and selling strawberries and rasperries.
A member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and ham radio.
Surviving are his wife - Adeline, and six children - Raymond Rowland and Diane (Gus) Boldt, both Inez, Tex.; Marie (John) Mowers, Detroit Lakes; Dale (Sandi) Rowland and Mary (Dave) Arvik, both Park Rapids, and Carol (Greg) Kardell, Nisswa. There are nine grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents and four brothers (William, Ralph, Cecil and Wallace).
Visitation: Thursday, Jan. 11, 5 - 8 p.m., Jones - Pearson Funeral Home. Also one hour prior to funeral at St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
