Sarah Welter - Somers
Feb. 20, 1916 - March 26, 2001
Sarah Welter - Somers, 85, died Monday, March 26, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, where she had been a resident since last September.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 30, from First Lutheran Church, with Rev. H. Wade Dutton officiating.
There will be a graveside service at 2 p.m. on Friday at Greenwood Cemetery in New York Mills, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Grandchildren will serve as the pallbearers.
Sarah Anderson, daughter of Isaac and Olga Johnson Anderson, was born Feb. 20, 1916, in Newtown Township (near New York Mills).
She grew up and attended rural school near New York Mills, graduated from New York Mills High School and - on Sept. 27, 1934 - married Lloyd Welter in New York Mills.
They lived at New York Mills until 1942 and then moved to Breckenridge, where she worked for many years at Anderson’s Grocery Store.
In 1962, they moved to Dilworth where Mr. Welter was employed with the Great Northern Railway Co. and where Mrs. Welter worked at Anderson’s Grocery Store.
Mr. Welter died Feb. 25, 1967, and she and Loren Somers were married at Fergus Falls on Aug. 14, 1971.
They lived in Fergus Falls and Hawley before moving to Detroit Lakes and moved into the Silver Birch Apartments at Detroit Lakes in 1989. Mr. Somers died Nov. 21, 1992.
Mrs. Welter - Somers was a member of First Lutheran Church.
Surviving are two sons - Tom Welter and Leroy Welter, both Hawley; two daughters - Jayne Joy and Sandra Westrum, both Detroit Lakes; two sisters - Thelma (Vic) Buth, Pharr, Tex., and Clara Krause, Albert Lea, and four brothers - Edward Anderson, Rush City; Edsel (Juanita) Anderson, Lathrop, Mo.; Marvin Anderson, Mound, and Ervin (Jean) Anderson, Ottertail. There are 12 grandchildren and four great - granddaughters.
Preceding Mrs. Welter - Somers in death, in addition to her two husbands, were her parents, twin sons (Donald and Duane), a sister (Vera Walseth) and a brother (Reino Anderson).
Visitation: One hour prior to funeral at First Lutheran Church.

Palmer Floberg
June 8, 1913 - March 22, 2001
Palmer Floberg, 87, a lifelong farmer in the Hawley area, died Thursday, March 22, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
The funeral was at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, from Park Lutheran Church, rural Hawley.
Rev. Doug Lindgren officiated at the funeral, Pam Aakre was the organist and the vocalist was Clint Felker.
Interment was at Park Lutheran Cemetery, with the Vigen - Wright Funeral Home of Hawley in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Morris Floberg, Duane Hovelsrud, Nolan Myhra, Howard Myhra, Mark Haugen and Harlan Hovelsrud.
Palmer Floberg, son of Alfred and Jennie Hovelsrud Floberg, was born June 8, 1913, in Parke Township of Clay County.
He grew up and attended school in Parke Township, farmed there his entire life and also was employed at the Hawley Locker Plant during the 1950’s and the 1960s and spent three years in adult foster care with Kelly and Lloyd Anderson.
Mr. Floberg entered Viking Manor Nursing Home at Ulen last September.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother (Alvin).

Mina Peoples Miller
July 29, 1920 - March 17, 2001
Mina Peoples Miller, 80, formerly of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, March 17, at a nursing home in Pasco, Wash.
The funeral was at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, from the Central United Protestant Church in Richland, Wash.
Mina Peoples, daughter of George and Milla Peoples, was born at Detroit Lakes on July 29, 1920.
She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1938) and, while in high school, was a member of the Hungry Five musical organization which also included Mar Jungers, Pearl Hansen, Hjordis Boyer and Betty Given.
Following high school graduation, she earned degrees in English and music at Moorhead State.
She moved to Hanford, Wash., in 1943, where she served as women’s recreation director and also was editor of the Hanford News.
In 1944, she married Blake Miller and they lived in Richland for 58 years.
One of the premier vocalists in the Richland area, she sang with the Columbia Chorale, the Mid - Columbia Symphony, the Central United Protestant Church Choir and was a founding member of the Richland Light Opera.
Mrs. Miller also was involved in Allied Arts, an art organization in the Richland area and taught school for many years before retiring. She also enjoyed writing, weaving and sculpting.
Surviving are her husband - Blake; a daughter - Shiela (Armando) Rivero, Seattle, Wash., and two sisters - Helan Hammond and Joyce Warner, both Detroit Lakes. There are a number of nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents and a sister (Mabel Swanson).

Alf Bakken
June 10, 1909 - March 10, 2001
Alf Bakken, 91, formerly of Audubon, died Saturday, March 10, at the Crestview Manor in Evansville.
The funeral was on Tuesday, March 13, from First Lutheran Church in Audubon, with Rev. James Kegel officiating. Janice Myhre was the organist and the soloist was Chuck Quesnel.
Interment was at the Audubon Cemetery, with the Anderson Funeral Home of Alexandria in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Gary Bakken, Jim Bakken, Curt Bakken, Chuck Quesnel, Clem Roers and Eric Satterlie.
Alf Bakken, son of Hans and Elise Nordhaug Bakken, was born June 10, 1909, in Audubon and attended country school.
He later managed the creamery in Martin, N. D., and - on March 17, 1931 - married Signe Johnson at Harvey, N. D.
They moved to Glenwood, Ill., where Mr. Bakken worked in the steel mills and then returned to Audubon in 1947.
Mr. Bakken served as mayor of the City of Audubon and also served on the Becker County Board of Commissioners.
Surviving are a son - Don Bakken, Brandon; a brother - Wilford (Stella) Bakken, Audubon, and a sister - Gladyce (Dennis) Anderson, Detroit Lakes. There are five grandchildren and eight great - grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Bakken in death were his wife, his parents, a daughter (Betty Peterson), a son - in - law (DeMars Peterson), a grandson, a daughter - in - law (Marian Bakken) , four brothers (Gunnar, Kaare, Ingvald and Reidar) and two sisters (Alpha Langseth and Helen Bakken).

Dagmar Johanna Noble
March 20, 1905 - March 18, 2001
Dagmar Johanna Noble, 95, died Sunday, March 18, at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga, where she was a resident.
The funeral was at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, from the Cardini - Behrens Chapel in Menahga.
Rev. James Yliniemi officiated at the funeral and James Kovala was the song leader.
Interment was at the Pickeral Lake Cemetery, with the Cardini - Behrens Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Darwin Feldt, Robert Peters, Brad Myllykangas, Paul Myllykangas, David Tuma and Mike Zick.
Dagmar Myllykangas, daughter of Victor and Sophia Kinnunen Myllykangas, was born March 20, 1905, in Champion, Mich.
She moved with her family as a young girl to the Wolf Lake area, where she was raised and attended school.
Upon completing school, she moved to Chicago, where she lived for a time. She and Carl Dalquist were married for 17 years until he died in 1948.
Dagmar Dalquist and Clarence Noble were married in 1950.
Mrs. Noble owned and operated the Wolf Lake Bakery for 28 years.
When she retired, she moved to Pine Villa in Menahga and then later entered the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home.
Surviving are three daughters - Myra Palmer, Springdale, Ariz.; Judy (Charles) Peters, San Antonio, Tex., and Della Doe, Holden, Mass.; seven step - children - John (Elizabeth) Hanninen, Chicago, Ill.; Elaine (Jim) Tuma, Frazee; Wesley (Joyce) Myllykangas, Florida; Stanley (Lois) Myllykangas, and Adley (Debbie) Myllykangas, both Wolf Lake; Sharon Majors, St. Peter, and Clarice (Jim) Zick, Detroit Lakes, and two sisters - Martha Siirila and Toini Koski, both of Menahga. There are 23 grandchildren and 15 great - grandchildren.
Mrs. Noble was preceded in death by her parents, both of her husbands, three children, two grandchildren, one great - grandchild, three brothers and three sisters.

Clinton Peter "Pete" Matson
March 12, 1921 - March 9, 2001
Clinton Peter "Pete" Matson, 79, died at his home at Frazee on Friday, March 9.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13, from the First Baptist Church in Detroit Lakes.
Rev. Jim Hinson and Rev. Charles Nethercott officiated at the funeral.
Interment was at Chilton Cemetery at Frazee, with the Furey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Clinton Peter Matson, son of Hans and Jennie Pfeifer Matson, was born in Burlington Township of Becker County on March 12, 1921.
He was raised in that area, attended the McHugh Country School and married Helen Wood in Detroit Lakes on Jan. 2, 1943.
The Matsons made their home on a farm in Burlington Township near Frazee.
From 1946 - 58, Mr. Matson was employed at the M & H Service Station in Detroit Lakes and, during the late 1950’s, he attended an auctioneer school and worked in that capacity in the area.
He was employed at Imperial Gas in Detroit Lakes from 1958 - 61 and then operated a dairy farm in Burlington Township and worked for the Northern Pacific Railway Co. in Frazee for nine - and - a - half years. From 1973 - 84, he was a custodian at the Detroit Lakes Senior High School and, upon retiring, went back to farming as a hobby.
A member of the Becker County Fair Board for many years, Mr. Matson also served on the Burlington Township board. He and his wife received the Century Farm award in 1997.
Surviving are his wife - Helen, Frazee; five daughters - Laura (Jerry) Smith, Vida, Ore.; Fern (Jerry) Schurdevin, Frazee; Kristi (Kelly) Ruud, Twin Valley; Lilly (Jeff) Romberg, Sumner, Wash., and Bonnie (Mike) Pearson, Hawley; two sons - John (Irene) and Dale (Grace), both Frazee; a daughter - in - law - Julie Matson, Frazee; a brother - Arvid, Frazee, and three sisters - Elna Schooler, Detroit Lakes; Geneva Simmons, Wadena, and June Pearson, Frazee. There are 11 grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Matson in death was a son (Warren, who died in 1999).
