Robert “Bob” J. Lyle
Services were held earlier this week for Robert “Bob” J. Lyle. The Saginaw resident died Thurs., May 16, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. He was 59.

Bob was born in Duluth. He was a fireman with the Duluth Fire Department for three years and was a Minnesota State Patrol Trooper for 29 years, retiring in 1998. He married Marcia “Marcy” Anderson in 1969. Bob was a former member and Deacon at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Cloquet and was to join First Lutheran Church, Duluth this Sunday. He was a former member of the Lake Superior Trollers Association and a current member of the Minnesota State Patrol Troopers Association and Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association. Bob was an expert cook, wildlife enthusiast and was known throughout the area for his gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years Marcy, daughter Monica (Michael) Burbul, brothers James (Carol) Lyle and Thomas (Gloria) Lyle, and his trusted companions - his dogs Mandy and Callie and his cat Emma.

Robert Moen, Robert Moen, who grew up in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School, died Wed., May 15, in Nevada. He was 58.

He was born Aug. 25, 1943 in Duluth, Minn. to Reuben and Myrtle (Gram) Moen. He married Sharon in 1964 in Munger, Minn. He worked for the federal government. He was an elder at Penn Valley Community Church and sang in the Gloryland Gospel Quartet.

Robert is survived by his wife Sharon of Rough and Ready, Nev., sons Rich (Julie) Moen of Morristown, Minn., Rob (Julie) Moen of Smartville, Nev., Ron (Gina) Moen of Penn Valley, Nev. and Ryan Moen of Rough and Ready, a daughter Becky (Joe) Burgess of Penn Valley, Nev., sisters Betty Oman of Oakdale and Dorie Hanson of Proctor, and five grandchildren.

Violet “Vi” Nan Morrison
Former Proctorite Nan Benjaminson of Iron River, Wis., is saddened by the death of her sister, Violet “Vi” Nan Morrison. She died Sun., May 12 at the age of 80.

She was born in Duluth, Minn. and was a lifelong Duluth resident.

She is survived by four daughters, three sons, many, many grand, great and great-great grandchildren, another sister, and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Private interment was in Park Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Florian “Fritz” Ackley
Sheila Dubois of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Florian “Fritz” Ackley. He died Wed., May 22, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. He was 65.

The Hayward resident was born in the township of Hunter in Sawyer County, Wis. He graduated from Hayward High School in 1954. He married Lucille Hamblin and spent 13 years as a professional baseball player, with eight of those years spent under major league contract as a pitcher. He played for the Chicago White Sox, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. After retiring from baseball in 1968, he owned and operated the Chip-A-Flo Lodge on the Chippewa Flowage for 13 years.

He is also survived by his wife Lucille, two sons, three other daughters, 11 grandchildren, one step grandson, his mother Anne Ackley, four brothers, three sisters, an aunt, and many nieces and nephews.

Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward.

Albert “Al” Raymond Maire
Jean Busse is mourning the death of her father, Albert “Al” Raymond Maire. He died Wed., May 22 in Duluth at the age of 88.

He was born in Superior. He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1930. He attended and played football at UW Superior. He married Myrtle Erickson in Superior. Al was a salesman all of his life. He received his Eagle Scout Award in 1930. When he was in Boy Scouts he served on the Color Guard when Presidents Harding and Coolidge visited the summer white house in Superior.

Al is also survived by his wife of 61 years Myrtle “Becky” of Duluth, a son, a sister, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Sat., June 1, 2002 in Peace United Church of Christ in Duluth.

John Timothy Huard
Maurice Huard of Proctor is saddened by the death of his brother John Timothy Huard. The Cloquet resident died Fri., May 24 in a Duluth hospital. He was 88.

He was born in Cloquet. John was a lifelong Cloquet resident and worked in the finishing room for Northwest Paper retiring in 1976. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

He is also survived by sons, two daughters, another brother, two sisters, 21 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Inurnment was at New Calvary Cemetery in Cloquet.

Helen A. Madsen
Services were held last week for Helen A. Madsen. She was a resident of Proctor, formerly of Breckenridge, Minn. She died Wed., May 22 in a Duluth hospice unit. She was 86.

She will be interned at Hamar Cemetery in Rothsay, Minn.

Rilla Margaret Gilman
Rilla Margaret Gilman, who was born in Proctor, grew up here and graduated from Proctor High School and was the FBI’s first female fingerprint identifier, died Mon., May 20, 2002, of natural causes in Belle Fourche, SD. She was 79.

Rilla was born July 16, 1922, to Arthur and Marguerite (Van Buskirk) Hanson. During WW II she moved to Washington, DC.

In 1944, she married Gene Peckham in Maryland. The Peckhams had two sons and two daughters and they made their home in Spearfish in the early 1950’s. Rilla was active at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and in the Black Hills Passion Play. In the years to follow, they made their home in many different places.

In 1962, Rilla married Joseph Gilman in Washoe County, Nev. In 1974, the couple moved to the Black Hills and lived in Whitewood and Spearfish. She and Joe were active in the Black Hills Barbershop Chorus and Sweet Adelines. In 1997, she moved to Belle Fourche to make her home.

Rilla was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe Gilman, and one brother Neil Hanson.

She is survived by four children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Mae C. Backlund
Mae C. Backlund, who grew up in Proctor, died Sat., June 1, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. She was 84.

The Grand Marais resident was born June 12, 1917, in Moose Lake. She graduated from Denfeld High School and moved to Grand Marais. She married Carl Rudolph. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Lioness.

She is survived by a son and daughter, two sisters, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Sat., June 22, 2002, at Maple Hill Cemetery, Grand Marais.

Bertha Rindal
A memorial service for Bertha Rindal, formerly of Proctor, will be held at 2 p.m., Fri., June 14 at Forbes United Methodist Church, Proctor. All friends and family are invited. Bertha died Sun., May 5, in Lakeshore Lutheran Nursing Home. She was 99.

Eugene “Gene” Roy Waldholm
Gerald G. Waldholm of Proctor is saddened by the death of his brother, Eugene “Gene” Roy Waldholm. He died Tues., May 28, in Duluth. He was 74.

He was born in Grant County, Minn. He was a Duluth resident since 1953 and retired from the Minnesota Department of Transportation where he was an equipment operator and received many safety-driving awards. He was a U.S. Army veteran and loved working on vintage cars.

He is also survived by two sisters, another brother, several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grand nephews.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Carol Jean Walsh
Diane Nynas of Saginaw is in bereavement following the death of her sister Carol Jean Walsh. She died Fri., May 24 in her Grand Junction, Colo. home. She was 54.

Carol was born at Village of Moose Lake, Minn. She spent her childhood at Esko and Duluth, Minn. In 1977, she married Brian Ladd Walsh at Kenosha, Wis. She had lived in Oak Creek and Kenosha, Wis. before moving to Grand Junction 22 years ago. Carol was a member of the Church on the Rock and she was a Hospice volunteer.

She is also survived by her husband Brian Walsh of Grand Junction, her mother, two sons, two daughters, two brothers, and eight grandchildren.

Anna L. Molstad
Anna L. Molstad, who had lived in Proctor for 43 years with her husband George, a PHS teacher, died Mon., June 3, 2002 in Crosby. She was 92.

Anna Louis Wahlstrom was born in Brainerd. She grew up and attended schools in Brainerd. Anna and George Molstad were married in 1930 in Nashua, Iowa. They moved permanently to their summer cabin on Lake Nisswa upon his retirement in 1968. In recent years most of her time was spent between Yuma, Ariz. and the cabin, where she and her late husband enjoyed 30 years of retirement together. She will be remembered as a special mom and grandmother to her family. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa, and was a past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Anna is survived by four children, Lois Lewis of Wash., George “Leon” (Nancy) Molstad of Twig, Minn., John (Janet) Molstad of Texas and Susan Molstad of La., seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and four step great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery in Nisswa.

Charles “Charlie” Wayne Johnson
Services will be held tomorrow, Fri. for Charles “Charlie” Wayne Johnson, of Duluth. He died Tues., June 11, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. He was 50.

Charlie was born in Duluth, graduated from Proctor High School and Suma Cum Laude from UMD. Charlie was an accountant for Goodwill Industries for 10 years and member and past treasurer of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor. He was also a Boy Scout.

He is survived by his parents, Al and Myrtle Johnson of Duluth; a brother, Roger (Barb Quast-Johnson) of Clear Lake, MN; and a sister, Darlene (John) Hastings of Duluth.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. today, Thurs. in Bell Brothers Chapel and from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor.

Interment will be in Oneota Cemetery.
