Dallas Charles Radi

July 13, 1929 - June 14, 2000
Dallas Charles Radi, 70, died Wednesday, June 14, at his Middle Cormorant Lake home near Lake Park.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 19, from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Crookston, with the Rev. Bill Reck officiating.
Military honors will be by the Crookston Veterans Council. The Stenshoel - Houske Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Dallas Charles Radi, son of Emil and Selma Reitmeier Radi, was born July 13, 1929, in Vancouver, Wash., and moved to the Crookston - Fisher area with his family when he was a year old.
He graduated from the Northwest School of Agriculture at Crookston (Class of 1947), was a member of the National Guard and was called to active duty with the U. S. Army on Jan. 16, 1951.
Mr. Radi served with the infantry in Korea and was awarded the Bronze Star, the Medal of Merit and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was discharged as a sergeant first class and returned to the Crookston area.
On April 24, 1955, Mr. Radi and Marilyn Aloise Langseth were married in Fosston and made their home in Crookston, where he was a patrolman with the Crookston Police Department until 1957 after which he owned and operated the Cities Service Station in Crookston for many years.
He joined Dahlgren & Co. in Crookston as transportation coordinator in 1963 and retired in 1993.
The Radis spent the summers at Middle Cormorant Lake and wintered at the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.
A member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Crookston and Cormorant Lutheran Church, he served on boards and committees at both churches. He belonged to veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1902 and Nels Wold Post No. 20 of The American Legion, served on the board of the Crookston Chamber of Commerce and was a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed travel and bird watching.
Surviving are his wife - Marilyn; three sons - Jeff (Ann) Radi, Ray, N. D.; Mike (Deb) Radi, Champlin, and Scott (Terry) Radi, Moorhead,and two brothers - Earl (Eleanor) Radi and Lloyd (Rita) Radi, Crookston. There are five grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother (who died in infancy).
Visitation: Sunday, June 18, 6 - 7:30 p.m., Cormorant Lutheran Church, and one hour prior to funeral on Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Memorials: Preferred to Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo or Hospice of the Red River Valley in Detroit Lakes.

Hazel A. Hoistad

Nov. 7, 1909 - June 14, 2000
Hazel A. Hoistad, a rural Pelican Rapids resident, died Wednesday, June 14, at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes. She was 90.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20, from the Cormorant Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Brunsberg officiating.
Interment will be at the Norway Lake Cemetery in Leonard, with the Larson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Hazel Alice Strand, daughter of Nels and Marie Strand, was born at Leonard on Nov. 7, 1909, graduated from Clearbrook High School, attended business college in Fargo and worked at the Western Newspaper Union in Fargo.
She and Elmer M. Hoistad were married in Fargo on Dec. 9, 1936.
They lived in Fargo until moving to the Cormorant area in 1948. Mr. Hoistad died April 5, 1995, and she entered the Detroit Lakes nursing facility in April, 1998.
Surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hoistad also was preceded in death by her parents and a brother (Ernest).
Visitation: Monday, June 19, 5 - 7 p.m., Larson Funeral Chapel in Pelican Rapids and one hour prior to funeral at Cormorant Lutheran Church.

Mabel "Mibs" Gardner

Jan. 14, 1914 - June 14, 2000
Mabel "Mibs" Gardner, Peoples Swanson, 86, died at the St. Louis Park Plaza on Wednesday, June 14.
There will be a memorial service in Detroit Lakes in August.
Mabel Peoples, daughter of George and Milla Annundsen Peoples, was born in Detroit Lakes on Jan. 24, 1914.
She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1932), earned a bachelor’s degree with majors in journalism and art at Moorhead State Teachers College in 1936 and taught art for two years in the Edina Public Schools.
Later she worked as an editor at Green Engraving in St. Paul, where she met her husband (Walter), who was an artist.
For many years, Mrs. Swanson was the adult education director at the Minneapolis YWCA, where she was instrumental in the implementation of many programs for urban women, such as Booktalk and Celebrate Yourself. She was particularly dedicated to raising awareness and respect for disadvantaged women.
Mrs. Swanson was an active participant in Minnesota Sculptors, Minnesota Poets, Gray Panthers, AAUW and was a member of the Wayzata Community Church.
Honored by the State of Minnesota as the Outstanding Senior Citizen in 1986, she also was the recipient of the Senior Share Care award as the Outstanding Senior Citizen in arts, music, drama and literature in 1991.
In recent years, she was commissioned to create a series of sculptures for the Minneapolis chapter of the AAUW.
Surviving are her husband - Walter, and three sisters - Helen Hammond, Joyce Warner and Mina Miller.
Memorials: Preferred to American Heart Association, the YWCA or support of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

Gloria J. Oswald

Jan. 9, 1932 - June 15, 2000
Gloria J. Oswald, 68, the wife of Dale Oswald, died at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes on Thursday, June 15.
There was a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 19, from the Christian Fellowship Church of Detroit Lakes.
Officiating at the service were Rev. Keith Barberg and Rev. Jim Erb.
The Furey Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Gloria June Vogt, daughter of John and Julia Lind Vogt, was born Jan. 9, 1932, in Detroit Lakes, grew up here and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1950).
Following high school graduation, she was employed by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 20 years until retiring in 1970.
On June 13, 1970, Gloria Vogt and Dale Oswald were married in Detroit Lakes and lived at rural Detroit Lakes until moving to rural Frazee in 1977.
Surviving are her husband - Dale, Frazee; nine sons - Dale Jr. (Connie), Tom (Lori) and Tim, all Detroit Lakes; Jerry (Marlys), Chris and Cory, all Frazee; Gordon, Osage; Harland (Marie), Kerkhoven, and Larry (Shelly), Wolf Lake; three daughters - Shirley (Stanley) Birky, Detroit Lakes; Judy (Bruce) Palm, Rochert, and Kathy (Jack) Dretsch, Detroit Lakes; a sister - Elizabeth Nybo, Detroit Lakes, and three brothers - John (Barbara), Charles (Nancy) and Richard (Betty), all of Detroit Lakes. There are 30 grandchildren and 12 great - grandchildren.
Preceding Mrs. Oswald in death were her parents, a son (Patrick), a brother, two sisters and a granddaughter.

Fred S. Hoefs

April 25, 1924 - June 18, 2000
Fred S. Hoefs, 76, died Sunday, June 18, at his home at rural Frazee.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21, from the West - Kjos Chapel in Detroit Lakes.
Rev. Jim Hinson and Rev. David Sohl officiated at the funeral and music was by Clint Felker.
Interment was at the Holmesville Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Chuck Bachmann, Roger Krause, Terry Craft, Bill Mayberry, Dean Nelson and Tom Jenson.
Fred S. Hoefs, son of Rudolph and Pearl Mott Hoefs, was born at Chisholm on April 25, 1924, moved to Detroit Lakes as a young boy and grew up and attended school in Detroit Lake
He worked on various farms from North Dakota to the West Coast, served with the U. S. Navy (1942 - 46) during World War II and then worked at various places on the West Coast as a steeplejack, welder, mechanic and jackhammer operator.
On Sept. 5, 1961, Fred Hoefs and Darlene Larson were married in Detroit Lakes.
They lived in Detroit Lakes during the summer months and spent the winter months on the West Coast for a number of years.
Around Detroit Lakes, Mr. Hoefs was a tree trimmer and mechanic and was known as Mr. Fixit because of his ability to repair anything. He became disabled in 1973.
He was a member of Jess - Omundson Post No. 1676, the local unit of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his wife - Darlene; a daughter - Ellen Hoefs, Detroit Lakes; two sons - Dennis (Diane) Rochert, and Daniel, Frazee; a brother - Wallace (Eunice), Imperial Beach, Calif., and two sisters - Delores Kress, Keizer, Ore., and Joyce (Ben) Gilbertson, Detroit Lakes. There are six grandchildren and one great - granddaughter.
Preceding Mr. Hoefs in death were his parents and three brothers (Alfred, Ernest and Leo).

Carl Reinold Jacobson

Aug. 11, 1902 - June 18, 2000
Carl Reinold Jacobson, a longtime resident of the Audubon area, died Sunday, June 18, at Sunnyside Nursing Home east of Lake Park. He was 97.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21, from First Lutheran Church of Audubon.
Rev. James Armstrong officiated at the funeral, Rev. Enoch Hall presented the eulogy, Donald Jacobson gave the scripture reading, Janice Myhre was the organist and the vocalists were Gwen Rust and Laurelyn Faszholz.
Interment was at the First Lutheran Cemetery, with the Vigen - Wright Funeral Home of Lake Park in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Michael Jacobson, Nathan Hall, Daniel Hall, David Jacobson, John Hanson and Daniel Hall.
Carl R. Jacobson, son of Ole and Laura Benson Jacobson, was born at Cottonwood on Aug. 11, 1902, and moved to Sebeka with his family at an early age.
He attended rural school near Hillview, attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis and farmed with his family.
On June 9, 1927, Carl Jacobson and Alice Langseth were married at Glyndon and farmed at Sebeka, Glyndon, Hawley and Audubon until he retired in 1969.
Mr. Jacobson was a member of the Audubon School Board for many years and served as chairman of the board. He was active in affairs of First Lutheran Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher most of his adult life, and also was involved in youth activities and community life in the Audubon area.
Surviving are two sons - Leverne (Florence) Jacobson, Audubon, and Donald (Donna) Jacobson, Madison, Wis.; a daughter - Janice (Earl) Hillesland, Wadena, and a brother - Oliver Jacobson, Fergus Falls. There are 17 grandchildren, 32 great - grandchildren and one great - great - grandson.
Preceding Mr. Jacobson in death were his parents, a brother, two sisters, his wife, a daughter (Grace Hall) and twin great - grandsons.
