Frederick C. Metzler

Nov. 27, 1919 - June 20, 2000
Frederick C. Metzler, 80, died Tuesday, June 20, at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Detroit Lakes.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, from the West - Kjos Chapel in Detroit Lakes, with Rev. Tim Cook officiating.
Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be grandchildren, great - grandchildren, Darrell Peterson, Chuck Senn, Phil Berkelo, Bob Shasky, Gil Wicker and Peter Gerving.
Frederick C. Metzler, son of Frederick and Johanna Metzler, was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Wales, N. D.
He worked for area farmers and the Soo Line Railway Co. and then served with the U. S. Army during World War II (1942 - 45).
During his tour of duty in the armed forces, he saw duty in the Aleutian Islands and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Meritorious Unit Emblem, the American Campaign Medal, the Bronze Star, the World War II Victory Medal, the Honorable Service Medal and the Expert Badge w/Carbine Bar.
Upon his discharge from the U. S. Army, he returned to work for the Soo Line Railway Co. and spent 42 years with the company until retiring in 1979.
Mr. Metzler and Adelaide Rourke were married in Elk River on Nov. 3, 1978.
He was a member of John Bridges American Legion Post No. 15 and was a life member of Jess - Omundson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1676 in Detroit Lakes.
Surviving are his wife - Adelaide Metzler, Detroit Lakes; three sons - Curtis Metzler, Branson, Mo.; Lester (Kathy) Metzler, Junction City, Wis., and James (Marie) Metzler, Brunswick, Ga.; two daughters - Janet (Jon) Macht, Pitsfield, Mass., and Beverly Metzler, Devils Lake, N. D.; six step - children - Donald Rourke and Charles (Judy) Rourke, both West Fargo; Pat (Darlyne) Rourke and JoAnne (Jack) Erbstoesser, both Fargo; Jack (Marie) Rourke, Verona, N. D., and Elaine (Gary) Wendt, Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother - Henry Metzler, Montclair, Calif., and a sister - Elsie Fast, Brooklyn Center. There are 12 grandchildren, four great - grandchildren, 21 step - grandchildren and 23 step - great - grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Metzler in death were his parents, four brothers and a sister.
Visitation: Saturday, June 24, one hour prior to funeral at West - Kjos Chapel.

Mary E. Daffin

May 3, 1943 - June 19, 2000
Rites will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee for Mary E. Daffin.
Mrs. Daffin, 57, a resident of Frazee for the past three years, died Monday, June 19, at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes.
Fr. Joseph DeCrans will officiate at the funeral.
Interment will be at the Two Harbors Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Paul Bankord, David Jesson, Clyde Jesson, Les Sharp, Tim Schmit, Bruce Engebretson and Bud Parker.
Friends and staff from St. Mary’s Regional Health Center will be the honorary pallbearers.
Mary Elizabeth Hayes, daughter of John and Rose Bankord Hayes, was born May 3, 1943, in Milwaukee, Wis.
She moved with her family as a child to Cactus, Tex., earned a degree in nursing from the Alvin Community College in Houston, Tex., and worked for Memorial City Hospital in Houston for 17 years.
Mrs. Daffin later was employed at various locations in Texas, Colorado and Minnesota and worked for the Boulder (Colo.) Sheriff’s Office from 1967 - 69. She moved to Frazee in 1997 and had been employed as a registered nurse at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes since that time.
Surviving are a son - John Hayes, Houston, Tex., and her mother - Rose Hayes, Detroit Lakes.
Visitation: Wednesday, June 21, David - Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, 5 - 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30. Also one hour prior to funeral on Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Gladys M. Holt

Sept. 20, 1917 - June 4, 2000
Services were at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, from The Congregational Church of Detroit Lakes for Gladys M. Holt.
Mrs. Holt, 82, a resident of the Detroit Lakes area for over 50 years, died Sunday, June 4, at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center.
Rev. Mark Kuether officiated at the funeral, Anne Jorgenson was the organist, Mitsy Casey was the pianist and vocal music was by the church choir.
Interment was at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Vivian Jacoby, Evie Sluss, Aggie Chapman, Lynn Anderson, Dorothy Poffenberger, Mary Haney, Sally Oja, Jean Poehler, Sharon Sinclair, Anne Anderson, Parnell Sanford, Gary Gould, Chuck Martin, Robert Lueben and Sigwel Wood.
Gladys Mae Chatfield, daughter of Frank and Theresa O’Connor Chatfield, was born Sept. 20, 1917, in New England, N.D.
As a child, she moved with her family to Oconomowoc, Wis., where she was raised and attended school.
She earned a degree in music education at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and was married to Russel Holt in Janesville, Wis., in 1946.
They lived in Janesville, Watertown, Sheboygan Falls and Wauwautosa (all in Wisconsin) and in Joliet, Ill., where she taught music, English and square dance.
The Holts moved to the Detroit Lakes area in 1949, operated the Sauer Lake Resort and then moved into Detroit Lakes in 1958.
Mrs. Holt taught music at Rossman Elementary School for 20 years and served as the music and choir director of The Congregational Church for more than 40 years.
In addition, she was active in Playhouse 412 for 15 years and taught piano and violin lessons for 10 years.
Surviving are a son - Craig (Michele McDougall), Carlsbad, Calif., and two sisters - Beuhlah Brenner, Bayfield, Colo., and Dorothy Buttmire, Alexandria, Va.
Preceding Mrs. Holt in death were her husband (who died in 1989), a daughter (Patricia), her parents and a brother (Clinton).
Memorials: Preferred to The Congregational Church of Detroit Lakes or the Detroit Lakes Regional Library.

Lorna M. Meyer

Feb. 19, 1922 - June 4, 2000
Lorna M. Meyer, 78, a retired staff member of the Waubun Public Schools, died at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo on Sunday, June 4.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 9, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Waubun.
Rev. Melody Kirkpatrick officiated at the funeral, Sue Heisler was the organist and special music was by Lloyd Benson.
Interment was at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Mahnomen, with the Mattson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were John Gomall, Bill Gomall, Delmar Gomall, Walter Buetow, David Buetow and Paul Treichel.
Lorna Treichel, daughter of Emil and Hulda Brueshoff Treichel, was born in Norman County on Feb. 19, 1922, and grew up in that area, where she attended the Adams School.
On Oct. 24, 1940, she and Francis W. Meyer were married in Ogema.
They lived in Washington from 1943 - 48, where they worked picking strawberries, and then returned to Minnesota and farmed near Waubun until Mr. Meyer’s death in 1963.
In the late 1960’s, Mrs. Meyer attended the Detroit Lakes Area Vocational Technical Institute, where she was enrolled in the secretarial course and then she worked a short time as a teacher’s aide in the Waubun school system.
She later was a cook in the Waubun Public Schools and also cooked during the weekends and summer months for several years at the White Earth Lutheran Camp. She retired from her duties with the Waubun schools in 1992 after being on staff for 24 years.
Upon retiring from the school position, she worked as a cook and helper for the senior citizens program until last fall.
A member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Ogema Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 9880, she enjoyed cooking and baking, was an avid quilter and enjoyed gardening and playing bingo.
Surviving are five sons - George (Sally), Kelso, Wash.; Willard (Barb), Fairbanks, Alaska; Richard and Ronald (Ginger), both of Longview, Wash., and David (Doreen), Moorhead; a sister - Lucille Cannon, Naples, Fla., and a son - in - law - Terry Balzum, Moorhead. There are 14 grandchildren and seven great - grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Meyer also was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter (Judy Balzum), three brothers (Herbert and Walter Gomall and Gilford Treichel) and a sister (Esther Buetow).

Victoria E. Durant

March 10, 1926 - June 10, 2000
Victoria E. Durant, 74, White Earth, died Saturday, June 10, at the Lutheran Memorial Nursing Home in Twin Valley.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, from St. Columba Episcopal Church in White Earth, with Fr. Mike Smith officiating.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Victoria Jackson, daughter of Louis and Mary Roy Jackson, was born March 10, 1926, in White Earth, was raised and attended school there and was a lifetime White Earth resident.
She and Lawrence Durant were married in White Earth.
Mr. Durant died May 7, 1977, and Mrs. Durant entered Lutheran Memorial Nursing Home in 1997.
Surviving are a son - David, Moorhead; three daughters - Sharon Durant and Vivian Person, both White Earth, and Mary Rettmann, Gibbon, and three sisters - Cecelia Greenlaw, Rose Weaver and Irene Keezer, all of White Earth. There are 20 grandchildren and 17 great - grandchildren.
Preceding Mrs. Durant in death, in addition to her husband, were two sons, her parents, three brothers and a sister.

Calvin Coolidge McDaniel

April 12, 1924 - June 8, 2000
Calvin Coolidge McDaniel, 76, a resident of the Lake Park area since 1971, died at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes on Thursday, June 8.
The son of George W. and Bertha Tripplett McDaniel, he was born April 12, 1924, in St. Genevieve, Mo., and grew up and attended rural school there.
Mr. McDaniel and Mary Wollridge were married in 1943 and - on Aug. 14, 1953 - he and Mary Hayes were married.
They lived in Scott City, Mo., until moving to Lake Park in 1971.
Mr. McDaniels worked at various jobs during his lifetime, including road construction, driving for Mayflower Van Lines and working 17 years with the Wetterlau IGA Grocery. He retired as a member of the Becker County law enforcement department in 1988 after serving for nine - and - a - half years.
Survivors include his wife - Mary, Lake Park; three sons - Darrell McDaniel, Las Vegas, Nev.; Joe McDaniel, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Steve McDaniel, Washington, D. C.; two daughters - Vivian (Jim) Stephens, Florence, Ky., and Laurie (Eric) Bondy, Thief River Falls, and a step - daughter - Barbara (Randy) Phillips, St. Ignatius, Mont. There are five grandchildren and one great - grandchild.
There will be a private funeral, with the Vigen - Wright Funeral Home of Lake Park in charge of arrangements.
