Lois A. Kunz
March 1, 1932 - Aug. 4, 2000
Lois A. Kunz, 68, the wife of Richard Kunz of Callaway, died at her home on Friday, Aug. 4.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, from Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with Fr. Jerry Rogers officiating.
Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Callaway, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Brian Fitzpatrick, Daniel Fitzpatrick, Ben Fitzpatrick, Josh Fitzpatrick, Chris Kunz and Bob Kunz.
Lois Ann Dalve, daughter of Delbert and Julia Dobmier Dalve, was born at Callaway on March 1, 1932.
She spent her childhood in the Ogema area, graduated from Waubun High School (Class of 1949) and, following high school graduation, worked several years at the Detroit State Bank (now Bremer) in Detroit Lakes.
On May 14, 1953, she and Richard Kunz were married in Callaway. They lived their entire married life in Callaway.
Surviving are her husband - Richard, Callaway; seven sons - Richard (Carolyn), Salt Lake City, Utah; Ross (Bonnie), Callaway; Chris and Robert, both Fergus Falls; Matthew (Aletha), White Bear Lake; Gerard, Moorhead, and Dominic (Marla), Redwood Falls; four daughters - Mary Jo (Mike), Fitzpatrick, Foley; Vanessa (David) Lahr, Hutchinson; Jayne (Jim) Courneya, Vergas, and Erin (Derek) Crompton, Moorhead; a brother - Maynard (Betty) Dalve, Great Falls, Mont., and two sisters - Beatrice (Tony) Mertens, Ogema, and Elaine (John) Zima, Waubun. There are 25 grandchildren.
Preceding Mrs. Kunz in death were her parents and a brother (Delbert).

Clarence L. "Shorty" Sittko
July 26, 1912 - Aug. 5, 2000
Clarence L. "Shorty" Sittko, 88, a resident of Ada and formerly of Twin Valley, died at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo on Saturday, Aug. 5.
The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9, from Faith United Church in Ada.
Rev. James Hodak officiated at the funeral and Solvig Kitchell was the organist.
Interment was at the Ada Municipal Cemetery, with the Anderson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Clarence Reuer, Caleb Reuer, Jason Sittko, Alvi Borgen, Lorence Tiede, Alvin Crane and David LaChappelle.
Clarence Sittko, son of William and Marie Grivno Sittko, was born near Sauk Rapids on July 26, 1912.
As a child, he moved with his family to a farm southeast of Ada, where he attended School District No. 68.
He worked a variety of jobs as a young man, including on farms, picking corn, for a carnival, in lumber camps and riding the rails. As a young adult, he returned to manage the family farm near Ada.
Mr. Sittko and Verna Baumgarten were married at Ada on Aug. 20, 1941, bought a farm near Borup and worked the farm and he also worked at various jobs in the area.
He started working as a carpenter on government projects in Minnesota and North Dakota during the early 1960s, retired in the mid - 1970s and then moved to Twin Valley, where he and his wife built a home. They moved to Ada in the fall of 1999.
Surviving are his wife - Verna; two children - Curtis (Jani), Detroit Lakes, and Wanda (Garry) Genzlinger, Granite Bay, Calif., and a brother - Bill (Phillis), St. Paul. There are seven grandchildren and four great - grandchildren.
Mr. Sittko was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Roger D. Johnson
Sept. 5, 1928 - July 28, 2000
Roger D. Johnson, 71, a retired employee of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) and a lifetime area resident, died at his home in Erie Township on Friday, July 28.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1, from Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes.
Rev. Mark R. Olson officiated at the funeral, Phyllis McLeod was the organist and the soloist was Lorri Schermerhorn.
Interment was at First Lutheran Cemetery in Audubon, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Russ Johnson, Bruce Johnson, Danny Johnson, Terry Johnson, Jeff Restad and Matt Kindy.
The honorary pallbearers included Jason Leitheiser, Jennie Bowers, Janaye Johnson, Maisie Johnson, Chrissy Springer, Travis Leitheiser, Nick Bowers, Davis Johnson, Marcus Johnson and Andy Springer.
Roger Duane Johnson, son of Theodore and Anna Westberg Johnson, was born at rural Lake Park on Sept. 5, 1928, and moved to Audubon as a young boy, where he attended school.
Mr. Johnson played professional baseball for the Sheboygan (Wis.) Indians, a farm club of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and then served with the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Upon receiving his discharge from the armed forces, he played baseball for Detroit Lakes, as well as several other teams in the area.
On May 21, 1955, Roger Johnson and Yvonne Sanden were married in Detroit Lakes.
He joined the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) in 1957 and worked until retiring in 1987.
Mr. Johnson enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Surviving are his wife - Yvonne; two sons - Michael (Darcy) and Mark (Phyllis), both Detroit Lakes; a daughter - Laurie (Terry) Bowers, Detroit Lakes; two brothers - Carl Johnson, Lake Park, and Harold "Smokey" Johnson, Detroit Lakes, and five sisters - Eleanor (Ted) Kiehl and Anna Kohler, both Detroit Lakes; Arlene (Arlen) Restad, Eagan; Elaine (Maynard) Oss, Elk River, and Charlotte Smith, Cormorant. There are 10 grandchildren and two great - grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Johnson in death were his parents, five brothers (Albert, Oliver, George, Lloyd and Ernest) and a sister (Hildur Lund).

Mabel "Mibs" Gardner Peoples Swanson
There will be a graveside service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes for Mabel "Mibs" Gardner Peoples Swanson.
Mrs. Swanson, 86, died Wednesday, June 14, at the St. Louis Park Plaza.
The David - Donehower Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Harmond R. "Dick" Bjerke
Jan. 26, 1937 - Aug. 7, 2000
Harmond R. "Dick" Bjerke, 62, a lifetime resident of the Lake Park area, died Monday, Aug. 7, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10, from the Lake Park Lutheran Church.
Rev. Philip Johnson will officiate at the funeral and Audrey Savig will be the organist.
Interment will be at the church Cemetery, with the Vigen - Wright Funeral Home of Lake Park in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Danny Olson, Orvis Olson, Lyden Olson, Lloyd Olson, Henry Boman and Rolland Nelson.
Harmond R. Bjerke, son of Hiram and Ruth Haugrud Bjerke, was born at Detroit Lakes on Jan. 26, 1937.
He grew up and attended school at Lake Park, farmed near Lake Park and married Susan Jacobson at Perley on July 7, 1968. They farmed at Lake Park following their marriage.
Mr. Bjerke served on the Lake Park Township Board, was clerk of the board and also served for many years on the Lake Park Elevator Board.
He entered Emmanuel Nursing Home in July, 1998.
Surviving are his wife - Susan, Lake Park; his mother - Ruth Bjerke, Lake Park; a son - Matthew Bjerke, Lake Park; two daughters - Melissa Bjerke and Maria Bjerke, both Lake Park, and a sister - Roxanne Megorden, Langley, Wash.
Preceding Mr. Bjerke in death were his father and a sister.
Visitation: Wednesday, Aug. 9, Vigen - Wright Funeral Home in Lake Park, 5 - 7 p.m., with prayer service at 6:30.

John A. Anderson
Oct. 6, 1927 - Aug. 5, 2000
John A. Anderson, 72, a resident of the Frazee Care Center since 1995, died at the center on Saturday, Aug. 5.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 7, from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee, with Fr. Joseph DeCrans officiating.
Interment was at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Jay Anderson, Joel Anderson, Casey Courneya, Heath Courneya, Paul Kvistad and Margaret Hanson.
John A. Anderson, son of John and Margaret Ckola Anderson, was born Oct. 6, 1927, in Callaway.
He moved to Frazee with his family as a child and attended school there.
Mr. Anderson and his mother operated the Wymer Lake Resort until 1958, after which he operated a lawn service in Frazee until 1995.
Surviving is a brother - Jim, Frazee.

Bertha Hatfield
Dec. 17, 1911 - Aug. 5, 2000
Bertha Hatfield, 88, who owned and operated a resort in the Detroit Lakes area for many years, died Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Frazee Care Center.
The funeral was at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, from the David - Donehower Chapel in Detroit Lakes, with Rev. Ken Vollmers officiating.
There will be a service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, from the Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Worthington, Ind.
Interment will be at the Owensville Cemetery in Owensville, Ind.
The David - Donehower Funeral Home had charge of local arrangements.
Bertha Louise Bays, daughter of Harley and Ida Skinner Bays, was born Dec. 17, 1911, in Worthington, Ind, where she was raised and where she attended school.
On Dec. 23, 1929, she and Loren Hatfield were married at Worthington and lived at Canby, Ind., until purchasing Hatfield’s Island View Resort on Island Lake near Detroit Lakes.
The Hatfields operated the resort during the summer months and spent the winter months in Indiana and Florida.
Mr. Hatfield died Oct. 14, 1969, and she continued to operate the resort until entering the Frazee Care Center in June of this year.
Surviving are four grandchildren and two great - grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hatfield also was preceded in death by a son (Paul).
