Lori Gillespie
Jan. 19, 1954 - July 4, 2000
Lori Gillespie, 46, the former Lori Larson of Audubon and a resident of Phoenix Ariz., died Tuesday, July 4, at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
There was a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 8 at First Lutheran Church in Audubon.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Phoenix.
Lori Larson, daughter of Everett and LaVanche Nyblad Larson, was born at Grand Forks, N. D., on Jan. 19, 1954.
She grew up in Audubon, graduated from Audubon High School (Class of 1972) and married Allen "Bud" Gillespie at Audubon on April 21, 1973.
Following their marriage, they lived in the Audubon area until moving to Phoenix in 1986.
Surviving are her husband - Allen, Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters - Allison and Lindsey, both Phoenix; her mother - LaVanche Larson, Audubon; seven brothers - Kim (Kathy) and Jay (Mary), both North Dakota; Lowell (Evie), Pennsylvania; Dale (Arlene) and Byron (Machiko), both Minnesota; Ronnie, Illinois, and Mark (Kathy), Wisconsin, and two sisters - Cathy (Dean) Sunram and Jill (Bob) Timm, both Minnesota.

Gudrun Haddeland
Aug. 25, 1917 - July 4, 2000
Gudrun Haddeland, 82, a native of Norway and a longtime Waubun area resident, died at her home on Tuesday, July 4.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 10, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Waubun, with the Rev. Loren Fevig officiating. Carol Christensen will be the organist and special music will be by Gregg Houglum.
Interment will be at Aspelund Cemetery in Flom, with the Mattson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Jesse Haddeland, Josh Haddeland, Karl Haddeland, Jon Haddeland, Patrick Haddeland, Mathew Haddeland, Amy Haddeland, Andreas Kessler, Jody Schiefelbein, Kristin Riccio and Lise Kessler Walters.
Gudrun Berghom, daughter of Andreas and Kristine Berghom, was bon Aug. 25, 1917, in Kvinesdal, Norway, attended school in Norway and married Karl Johan Haddeland in 1937.
The Haddelands came to America with their three children in 1947 and made their home in the Waubun area. Three children were born after they migrated to the United States.
Mrs. Haddeland was employed for many years at the kitchen at Waubun High School and later worked as a home health aide in the area.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Trinity Ladies Aid, was a charter member of the Sons of Norway in Detroit Lakes and was a den mother for the Waubun Cub Scout Troop.
She enjoyed gardening, knitting and made several trips to her native country of Norway.
Surviving are four sons - Kaare (Kathi) and Peter (Sandy), both of Waubun; William (Connie), Edina, and Steven (Debbie) Apple Valley’ two daughters - Gerd Kessler, Sante Fe, N. M., and Lila (Dennis) Trandem, Bagley, and a sister - Maria, Norway. There are 11 grandchildren and three great - grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband (who died in 1999), four brothers (Bernt, Olav, Haakon and Sverre), a sister (Klara) and two sons - in - law (Len Kessler and Larry Miller).

Donald W. Kohler Sr.
Sept. 8, 1913 - July 8, 2000
Donald W. Kohler Sr., 86, Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, July 8, at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center.
The funeral was at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12, from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Audubon.
Rev. Ernest Geistfeld officiated at the funeral, Robin Huseby was the organist and the soloist was Trudy Briard.
Interment was at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Richard Vareberg, Richard Larson, Peter Anderson, Arthur Kohler III, Gary Caruth and James Caruth.
The honorary pallbearers included Brian Helmer, Jeff Helmer, Wallace Bloom, Carl Lundberg, Dean Gilbertson, Eugene Kohler and Arlum Anderson.
Donald W. Kohler, son of Julius and Julia Johnson Kohler, was born Sept. 8, 1913, in Hamden Township of Becker County (near Audubon).
He grew up near Audubon, attended School District No. 44 and then worked on the farm until buying a milk route and hauling cream for the Land O’Lakes Cooperative Creamery in Detroit Lakes.
Mr. Kohler and May C. Peterson were married at Ulen on Aug. 3, 1940.
He also drove truck for the milk drying plant in Detroit Lakes and for Art Kohler Trucking of Audubon.
In 1950, Mr. Kohler joined the Sweetman Construction Co. of Sioux Falls, S. D., as a crane operator and was involved in building bridges throughout South Dakota.
He returned to Detroit Lakes in 1975 and resumed driving truck for his brother at Kohler Trucking in Audubon until retiring in 1978.
Mr. Kohler was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Audubon.
Surviving are two sons - Donald Jr., Detroit Lakes, and David (Beverly), Adrian, and four sisters - Louise Rice, Detroit Lakes; Verna Bloom, Lake Park; Mildred Caruth, Willernie, and Isabelle (Lowell) Gilbertson, Henderson, Nev. there are five grandchildren and 10 great - grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Kohler in death were his parents, his wife (who died Dec. 17, 1996), two brothers (Arthur and Wilferd, who died in infancy) and two sisters (Florence Nelson and Hazel Anderson).

Troy Allen Kimball
April 3, 1974 - June 30, 2000
Troy Allen Kimball, 26, Menahga, died Friday, June 30, from injuries received in a Becker County motor vehicle accident.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, from Bethany Lutheran Church in Spruce Grove Township, with Rev. Mark Manning and Rev. Kurt K. Jacobson officiating. Shirley Anderson was the organist.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the Cardini - Behrens Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The pallbearers were Arlen Huwe, Kailen Collette, Thor LeCount, Rusty Hammer, Chad Blair, Shane Arola and Randy Wyman.
Serving as the honorary pallbearers were Justin Wyman, Joe Butler, Rich Lahren, Shane Koski, Christopher Erickson, Chad Burkman and Peyton Burkman.
Military rites were by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8165 of Wolf Lake.
Troy Allen Kimball, son of Ernest and Darlene Arola Kimball, was born in Perham on April 3, 1974, and was raised in Spruce Grove Township.
He attended Menahga schools, graduated from Menahga High School (Class of 1992) and served on active duty for two - and - a - half years with the U. S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky.
Upon receiving his discharge from the U. S. Army, he returned to the Menahga area, was employed at turkey farms and, at the time of his death, was helping his parents in their landscaping business (Yards and More) in Detroit Lakes.
He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, basketball, baseball and football, as well as reading and writing stories about hunting and fishing experiences.
Surviving are a daughter - Breawna and her mother (Jenifer Hemm), Darwin; his parents - Ernest and Darlene Kimball, Menahga; a sister - Sharon Kimball, Menahga; two brothers - Scott Kimball and Michael Kimball, both Menahga, and his maternal grandparents - Woodrow and Harriet Arola, Frazee. There is one niece and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his paternal grandparents (Clark and Elizabeth Kimball).

Helen Herron
Aug. 2, 1910 - July 1, 2000
Helen Herron, 89, the former Helen Arneson, died Saturday, July 1.
Helen Arneson, daughter of Bernt and Mary Arneson, was born Aug. 2, 1910, and grew up in the Detroit Lakes/Audubon area.
She was first married to Frank Pederson and later married Larry Herron.
Surviving is a daughter - Marlys Wolden, Fresno, Calif. There are five grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband (Larry Herron) and a daughter (Lois Lind).
Interment was at the Boulder City, Nev., Veterans Cemetery.

Raymond P. Laney
May 21, 1932 - July 10, 2000
Raymond P. Laney, 68, a resident of the Audubon area since 1973, died at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo on Monday, July 10.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, from Eksjo Lutheran Church west of Lake Park.
Interment will be at the church Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Raymond Laney, son of Lawrence and Alice Nelson Laney, was born at Underwood on May 21, 1932, and grew up at Henning and Deer Creek, where he attended school.
On. Sept. 22, 1951, Mr. Laney and Gail Erickson were married at Lake Park.
Mr. Laney worked in the Twin Cities, then purchased a farm at Delano and moved to Audubon in 1973 and continued to farm. He retired in 1990. They continued to live on the farm in retirement.
Surviving are his wife - Gail, Audubon; three sons - Dan (Connie), Howard Lake; Mitchell (Rebecca), Audubon, and Kevin (Mary), Lake Park; a daughter - Kathleen (Mark) Reineccius, Audubon; his mother - Alice Laney, Annandale; six brothers - Lindy (LouAnn) and Douglas, both Annandale; Ronald (Terry), South Haven; Richard (Ardelle), St. Louis Park; Stephen (Joyce), Fairhaven, and Jon (Gloria), Kingston, and a sister - Gayle (Odus) Schier, Dover, Tenn. There are eight grandchildren and two great - grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Laney in death were his father and a brother.
Visitation: Wednesday, July 12, David - Donehower Funeral Home, 5 - 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7.

H. Alton Stearns
Nov. 23, 1904 - July 8, 2000
H. Alton Stearns, 95, a lifelong Becker County resident, died at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center on Saturday, July 8.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, from the West - Kjos Chapel.
Rev. Timothy F. Riley officiated at the funeral, David Shaleen was the organist and the soloist was Jodie Shaleen.
Interment was at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Glenn Stearns, Brad Hasselblad, Richard Stearns, Ross Hasselblad, Allan Stearns and Dick Kronick.
The honorary pallbearers included Dan Stearns, Karin Garza, Shelly Stearns, Trevor Eytcheson and Dana Ralph.
Henry Alton Stearns, son of John and Emma Rennawanz Stearns, was born in Erie Township of Becker County on Nov. 23, 1904.
He married Ruth Benson on Oct. 14, 1938, and she died April 27, 1974. On May 11, 1984, he married Ella Harjes Rennewanz. She died March 15, 2000.
Mr. Stearns was employed in road construction work from 1926 - 63, then was named the Detroit Lakes city assessor and served in that capacity until retiring in 1973.
He served on the School District No. 40 School Board for several years and served two terms on the Detroit Lakes City Council. While a city alderman, he promoted the establishment of Crovisier Park and was a charter member of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club. He also belonged to the Becker County Historical Society.
Surviving are two sons - Richard (Shirley) Stearns, Fargo, and Glenn (Adrienne) Stearns, Audubon, and a daughter - Audrey (Dick) Kronick, Kent, Wash. There are seven grandchildren, 10 great - grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his two wives, Mr. Stearns also was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
