Milton J. Totland
April 16, 1927 - Aug. 28, 2000
Milton J. Totland, 73, a lifelong resident of the Detroit Lakes area, died Monday, Aug. 28, at St. Mary’s Nursing Center.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, from First Lutheran Church.
Rev. David Peterson will officiate at the funeral, Melody Bober will be the pianist and the soloists will be Kim Schnitzer and Solvieg Nordsletten.
Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Rolland Kjos, James Stenerson, Robert Marine, Roy Somdahl, Paul Johnston, Howard Tyberg, Brian Kittelson and Mark Kittelson.
The honorary pallbearers will include Arvid Anderson, Donald Lynch and the Brown Baggers.
Milton J. Totland, son of Gustave and Olive Engstrand Totland, was born April 16, 1927, in Detroit Township of Becker County, grew up near Detroit Lakes and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1946).
He joined Reid & Wackman Lumber Co. in Detroit Lakes in 1947, a firm which later became the Reid Lumber Co. and then, in 1975, became the Stenerson Lumber Co.
Mr. Totland worked until retiring in 1990 and completing 42 years in the lumber business.
On Sept. 6, 1948, Milton J. Totland and Phyllis Steffen were married in Frazee.
A member of First Lutheran Church, he served on the First Lutheran Church Council, was active in other church affairs and also was a faithful member of the Brown Baggers. For many years, he also belonged to the Detroit Lakes Eagles.
During retirement, he enjoyed helping friends and caring for his yard.
Surviving are his wife - Phyllis, Detroit Lakes; a son - John (Carol Ann) Totland, Fergus Falls; three daughters - Katherine (Bruce) Jacobson, Makanda, Ill.; Karen (Lee) Kittelson, Fergus Falls, and Barbara (Robert) Tomlinson, Sewell, N. J., and a brother - Marvin (Adeline) Totland, Richville. There are eight grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Totland in death were his parents, a brother (Leonard) and a sister (Dorothy).
Visitation: Wednesday, Aug. 30, West - Kjos Funeral Home, 4 - 8 p.m. Also one hour prior to funeral at First Lutheran Church.

Helga E. Flatau
Aug. 7, 1904 - Aug. 29, 2000
Helga E. Flatau, 96, a longtime Frazee area resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the Frazee Care Center, where she had resided since 1997.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, from Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee, with the Rev. William Aufdenkamp officiating.
Interment will be at the Flatau Cemetery, rural Frazee, with the Furey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Helga Emilia Kastet, daughter of Helge and Eli Tetrud Kastet, was born in Oscar Township of Otter Tail County (near Rothsay) on Aug. 7, 1904.
She was raised in that area, attended school there and then attended normal school in Moorhead and Mankato, where she received her teaching certification.
Helga Kastet later attended cosmetology school at Sauk Centre and worked in a beauty salon there.
Upon moving to Hobart Township of Otter Tail County (near Frazee), she taught school in District No. 233.
On Sept. 17, 1931, she and Fred Flatau were married at Rothsay and made their home and farmed in Hobart Township.
Upon retiring, the Flataus moved to Little McDonald Lake near Frazee.
Surviving are a sister - Mabel Frazee, Pelican Rapids, and a sister - in - law - Luella Cook, Detroit Lakes. There are a number of nieces and nephews.
Preceding Mrs. Flatau in death were her husband (who died Aug. 14, 1989), her parents, four brothers and four sisters.
Visitation: Wednesday, Aug. 30, Furey Funeral Home in Frazee, 4 - 8 p.m. Also one hour prior to funeral at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Willis Butzke
Jan. 11, 1929 - Aug. 28, 2000
Willis Butzke, 71, a resident of Anoka and formerly of Perham, died at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids on Monday, Aug. 28.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Vergas, with Rev. Michael Walters officiating.
Interment will be at the church Cemetery, with the Furey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Willis Orville Butzke, son of William and Lucille Johnson Butzke, was born at Wadena on Jan. 11, 1929.
He was raised and attended school in Perham, graduated from Perham High School (Class of 1947) and then moved to Grand Forks, N. D., where he was employed by the University of North Dakota (UND).
Mr. Butzke served three years in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and, upon receiving his discharge, was employed by the Twin City Arsenal at New Brighton.
On June 7, 1952, Mr. Butzke and Phyllis Bunkowski were married at Vergas.
They moved to Forest Lake, where he worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT).
The Butzkes later lived in Mahnomen, Fergus Falls, Blaine and Anoka while he was employed with Mn/DOT. He retired in 1991.
Surviving are his wife - Phyllis, Anoka; two daughters - Lucille (David) Norman and Jolene (Orlando Ricardo) Butzke, both St. Paul; two sons - Roger, Anoka, and Craig (Nancy Caron), Tualatin, Ore., and two sisters - Adele (Milton) Schrupp, Vergas, and Violet Philpanko, Sacramento, Calif. There are two grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Thursday, Aug. 31, Furey Funeral Home in Vergas, 4 - 8 p.m. Also one hour prior to funeral on Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Ida Stephens
Nov. 10, 1914 - Aug. 15, 2000
Ida Stephens, 85, a native of Ponsford, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, Wash.
There was a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, at Messiah Lutheran Church.
Interment was at Northwood Park Cemetery, with the Vancouver Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Ida Wettels was born at Ponsford on Nov. 10, 1914 and married Leonard “Dutch” Stephens.
Mrs. Stephens was a postal carrier and also was a baker at the Totem Pole and Red Lion at the Quay restaurants.
Surviving are a daughter - Vicky Heath, Yalcot, Wash.; three sons - Don, Woodland, Wash.; Ron, Ridgefield, Wash., and Tom, Battle Ground, Wash.; four sisters - Luella Pritchard, Osage; Alvina Presler, Great Falls, Mont.; Alma McCarren, Yelm, Wash., and MariAnn, Scottsdale, Ariz., and two brothers - Johnnie (Gladys) Wettels, Ponsford, and Harold Wettels, Center, N. D. There are three grandchildren and eight great - grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband (who died in 1995) and a grandson.

Clara Anderson
Jan. 16, 1902 - Aug. 10, 2000
Clara Anderson, 98, a former resident of the Lake Park area, died at the Osakis Community Memorial Home on Thursday, Aug. 10.
There was a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, from the Osakis Lutheran Church.
Rev. Ronald Calvert officiated at the service, special music was by the Kongsvinger Quartet and Pat Converse was the organist.
Interment was at Kongsvinger Cemetery at Donnelly, with the Roy - Hetland Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The pallbearers included Henning Awsumb, Chester Larson, Marvin Anderson, Milton Anderson, John Kieffer and Earl Larson.
Clara Larson, daughter of Thorstein and Anna Peterson Larson, was born at Willmar on Jan. 16, 1902, and married Harold A. Anderson at Morris on Oct. 17, 1936.
They farmed for many years in the Lake Park area. Mrs. Anderson served as a Gray Lady at the Sunnyside Nursing Home and later was a nurse’s aide at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. They retired and moved to Osakis in 1967.
While in Osakis, she worked a number of years at the Osakis Community Memorial Home, was a member of the Osakis Lutheran Church, was active in the church choir and also belonged to the CMH Auxiliary.
She enjoyed gardening, quilting, sewing and television sports, especially watching the Minnesota Twins.
Surviving are three daughters - Lois (Donald) Gustafson, Osakis; Gloria (Michael) Hviding, Vienna, Va., and Gayle (Richard) Brown, Oakdale, Calif. There are seven grandchildren, seven great - grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (who died in 1995), five brothers (Alexander, Christian, Peter, Ole and Joseph) and five sisters (Emma Kieffer, Mary Awsumb, Nora Anderson, Anna Satter and Thora Cooley).

Adeline Burnside
March 11, 1927 - Aug. 29, 2000
Services were at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, from Salem Lutheran Church at Hitterdal for Adeline Burnside.
Mrs. Burnside, 73, a longtime resident of the Hitterdal/Hawley area, died at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
Rev. Jim Hulberg and Rev. Jill Steichen officiated at the funeral, Penny Herzog was the organist and the vocalist was August Frisk.
Interment was at the Hawley Cemetery, with the Vigen - Wright Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Arlen Burnside, Floyd Burnside, LeRoy Burnside, Perry Burnside and Donne Hansen.
Grandchildren were the honorary pallbearers.
Adeline Ethel Bach, daughter of William and Dorothy Bach, was born at Danvers on March, 11, 1927, attended school at Danvers and Hackensack and married Roy Burnside at rural Hawley on Feb. 1, 1945.
They lived on a farm north of Hitterdal, Mr. Burnside died Dec. 22, 1984, and she moved to Hawley in July, 1987.
From 1962 until retiring in 1992, Mrs. Burnside was employed by Swift/Eckrich in Detroit Lakes.
Surviving are four sons - Arlen (Alice) Burnside, North Branch, and LeRoy (Carol), Floyd (Debbie) Burnside and Perry (Karen) Burnside, all of Hawley; a daughter - Vickie (Donne) Hansen, Ulen; her step - mother - Myrtle Bach, and 16 brothers and sisters - Rosie Hostetler, Betty Blanchard, Wilma Grice, Floyd Bach, Janet Wall, James Holmes, Dora Mumford, Johnny Holmes, Cleo Bach, Merton Bach, Marvin Bach, Delbert Bach, Mary Middleton, Judith Dykgraef, Neil Bach and Rodney Bach.
There are 12 grandchildren, three step - grandchildren, nine great - grandchildren, seven step - great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Burnside also was preceded in death by a grandson, her parents and a brother (Louis Bach).
