Robert J. Dahl
Robert J. Dahl, 72, Nevada City, Calif., died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 in Grass Valley, Calif.

He was born in Two Harbors and lived there until he moved to California in 1963. He started his railroad career for DM&IR at the age of 17 as an apprentice blacksmith and later as a brakeman. After moving to California he worked for the Sacramento Northern Railroad, the Western Pacific Railroad and retired from the Union Pacific Railroad after 25 years as conductor. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Nevada City Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, VFW Post and UTU Local 1798.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dorothy M. Dahl; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Rosey of Rocklin, Calif. and David and Pam of Sun Valley, Nev.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ed Thomas of Marsing, Idaho; two brothers, Arthur Dahl and Marlin Dahl of Duluth; three sisters, Eleanor Hoeff of Minneapolis, Bernadine Kaspszak and Alice Mae Dahl of Duluth; six grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

Vernon L. Huwe
Vernon L. Huwe, 71, New Hope, Minn., formerly of Two Harbors, passed away recently and will be buried Thursday, Oct. 29 at St. James Lutheran Cemetery, South Effington Township, Minn. He is survived by his wife, Verdeen Huwe; daughter, Bonnie Lomen; grandsons, Andrew and Adam Lomen; former son-in-law, Arlyn Lomen; mother, Rufine Huwe; brother, Duane (Margene) Huwe; sister Janice (Jerry) Wussow; stepchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Valeda and father, Henry.

Eva I. Lingren
Eva I. Lingren, 79, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998 at Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors.

She was born February 1, 1919 to John B. and Hannah (Falk) Johnson in Two Harbors. Eva lived all of her life in Two Harbors. She went to school at Two Harbors High School. She worked as a cook and baked at the Homecraft Bakery.

She was preceded in death by husband Harold in 1992; brothers and sisters, Helmer, Walfred, Oscar, Emil, Elyn and Esther; infant son John Charles; grandson Charles; and infant granddaughter Linnea.

She is survived by son Richard (Jeanne) Ryan of Two Harbors; brothers Emmert (Dorothy) Johnson, Edgar (Lollie) Johnson and Enfred Johnson, all of Two Harbors; grandchildren Daniel and Dena Ryan; and many special nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, Nov. 28. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Brock E. Ernest, Sr.
Brock E. Ernest, Sr., 31, Isabella, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998 in an accident in Isabella. He was born in Two Harbors on May 7, 1967 to Arthur J. and Sharon F. (Meeks) Ernest. Brock was a life-long resident of Isabella. He graduated from Kelley High School in Silver Bay in 1985. He was self-employed as a trucker for Ernest Logging and, for the past two years, hauling granite for Cold Springs Granite Company. Trucking was more than just an occupation to Brock - he really loved driving. His other interests included snowmobiling, hunting, and recently horse farming. He is preceded in death by his father Arthur Sr. in 1997. He is survived by his wife Shelley (Schmitz); sons Brock Jr., Brian and Cole; mother, Sharon Ernest of Isabella; brothers, Arthur Jr. (Pam), Peter and Joseph Sr. (Penny), all of Isabella; sister Cindy (Les Donek) Olson of Grand Marais; grandmothers Raeburn Meeks of Peshtigo, Wisc. and Laura Ernest of Glidden, Wisc.; mother-in-law Ruth Gubrud; fathers-in-law Gary Gubrud and Lawrence Schmitz; two sisters-in-law Cheryl (Bob Jensen) Schmitz and Meribeth Gubrud. Services were held Wednesday in Sycar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay. Burial was at Isabella Memorial Cemeter. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Richard “Dick” Earl Brenna
Richard “Dick” E. Brenna, 63, Two Harbors, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

He was born to Sanford and Pearl (Johnson) Brenna, February 13, 1935 in Thief River Falls, Minn. He was raised in Thief River Falls and in 1953 he moved to Beaver Bay. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1954 and served in Korea, Japan and Cape Canaveral as a photographer and motion picture camera operator until 1958. He moved back to Thief River Falls and then to Silver Bay to work for Reserve Mining Company. He also was employed at LaBounty Manufacturing until his retirement. He owned and operated Brenna Carpet Cleaning. He married Marietta Haugan November 25, 1960.

He was a member of the American Legion and Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He enjoyed the outdoors and hunting.

He is preceded in death by parents, wife Marietta, and an infant brother and sister.

He is survived by sons Rick (Diane) of St. Joseph, Minn.and Randy (Donna) of Two Harbors; daughter Debbie (Ron) Peterson; beloved special friend Irene Ronning of Two Harbors; brother Clark (Barb) of Cook; grandchildren Meg Marietta Peterson and Joseph Randall Brenna; five step-grandchildren, 4 nieces and 3 nephews.

Services were held February 2 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors.

Robert Martin Koenig
Robert M. Koenig, 67, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999 in Lake View Memorial Hospital, Two Harbors.

He was born April 19, 1931 to Wenzel and Elizabeth (Cady) Koenig in Morgan, Minn. He grew up and attended schools in the Morgan area, then served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1951, where he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal. He was married to Irene Schmidt in 1951 and they lived in Tracy, Minn. before moving to Two Harbors in the mid 1950’s. He was employed by Hunkin Arundel and Dixon during the construction of Silver Bay, then worked for Mac Minkery and Black Diamond Mink Farm. For the past several years he was assistant manager of the Two Harbors Airport. He was a member of the American Legion, Loyal Order of Moose and was a life-member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars - organizations where he enjoyed being active in the kitchen, membership drives and honor guard.

He is survived by his wife Irene of Two Harbors; two sons, Joseph of Sturgeon Lake and Michael of Two Harbors; three brothers, James, Martin and Wenzel; six sisters, Margaret Reetz, JoAnn Young, Louis Haag, Ruth Jones, Geraldine Hubert, and Sharon Mann; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held February 6 in Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.

Maj. (Ret.) Richard Carlson
Maj. (Ret.) Richard Carlson, 75, Duluth, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in St. Luke’s Hospital.

Richard was born September 19, 1923, in Two Harbors, to Carl and Evelina Sjolund Carlson. He was a graduate of Two Harbors High School. He joined the Army and took night school at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He then served in the Pacific during WW II. He then made a career in the Army. Richard went to the Army Language School in Monterey, Calif., learning to understand Swedish, German, Japanese and French. He went to Korea with the 32nd Infantry, and was wounded, receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. While Richard was in the Army, he served in Germany, France and Japan. After retiring, he and his wife June Saxhaug, whom he married on November 10, 1945, moved back to Two Harbors where they operated the Sears Catalog Store from 1967-70. He then went to work for Hartcourt Brace, Jovanovich, where he founded and headed the directory department until his retirement. Richard was member and past chapter president of the Retired Officer’s Assn. Member of 32nd Infantry Regiment Association, Disabled American Veterans Association, VFW and American Legion in Two Harbors and the Duluth BPO Elks 133.

Richard is survived by his wife, June; brother Robert Carlson of Duluth; sisters, Ruth Shubert, Mae Montague and Patricia Olson, all of Two Harbors; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2 until 4 p.m. services Wednesday in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Spring burial with Military Honors at Forest Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.

Allen R. Tess
Allen R. Tess, 84, Two Harbors, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 at the Lake View Home in Two Harbors.

He was born to William and Martha (Hetzel) Tess, November 10, 1914 in Almond, Wisc.

He grew up in Wisconsin Rapids area, graduating from the high school in Wisconsin Rapids. He worked for a short time before serving in World War II in the European Theater. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart, two bronze stars and a good conduct ribbon. He returned from being wounded in action and recovered in a Michigan hospital. He then moved to Duluth, attended school and married Margaret Older on April 24, 1948. Allen was employed with Northern Pacific Railroad as a clerk before retiring.

He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and Plus 55 Group. He also served as a Cub Scout leader. He enjoyed golfing and bowling. He loved his family and was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He missed and mourned the loss of his wife Margaret of almost 50 years. Also, his life was affected greatly because of his military experience.

He is preceded in death by wife Margaret in 1996, son David in June of 1974, parents, sister and brothers.

He is survived by son Stephen (Sharon) of Delano, Minn.; daughters Susan (James) Turnquist of Two Harbors and Nancy (Raymond) Garcia of Fort Worth; sister, Jane (Iver) Jackson of Port Edwards, Wisc.; 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was January 30 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial was at Sunrise Memorial Cemetery in Hermantown.

Irene May Balfe
Irene M. Balfe, 89, Kilkenny, Minn., formerly of Two Harbors, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999 at Waseca, Minn.

She was born August 31, 1909 in Two Harbors to Barbara Frolach and August Tabor. She grew up and attended schools in Two Harbors. She married Thomas L. Balfe June 20, 1936 in Two Harbors and moved to Kilkenny.

She was a member of St. Canice Altar Rosary Society. She enjoyed card playing and belonged to a bridge club. She was also interested in politics. She had a love for animals and took in many stray cats to care for.

She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas on February 18, 1988.

She is survived by nieces and nephews in Two Harbors.

Julie “Ellen” (Jay) Quarn
Julie “Ellen” (Jay) Quarn, 95, Cloquet, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999 in the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital and Convalescent Nursing Care Section.

She was born January 29, 1904 to Thomas William and Julia Ann Gansel Jay in Brule, Wisc. The family moved from Brule to Duluth in October 1916, and from Duluth to Wales, Minn. in November 1919. She attended elementary schools in Brule and Duluth, graduating from Two Harbors High School in the class of 1923. Upon graduating from the Duluth Business University, Ellen worked in various office positions.

She married Herbert L. Quarn on August 21, 1935 in Wales. They lived in Duluth before moving to Cloquet in October, 1961. Ellen worked for attorney Lawrence Yetka in Cloquet as a bookkeeper until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Duluth and a member of the Presbyterian Esther Circle.

Ellen is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herbert on January 24, 1968; sisters Nellie Mackie, Ely and Ina Belle Jay, St. Paul; brothers Everett Jay, St. Paul and Thomas Jay, Beloit, Wisc. She is survived by nephews Jay R. Mackie of Ely, Thomas J. Mackie of Spooner, Wisc.; a niece, Anne Lisa Mackie Ponciroli of Ledyard, Conn.

Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery, Duluth.

Ruby (Felland) Smith
Ruby E. Smith, 78, died suddenly in her home in Sacramento on January 30, 1999.

She was born in Superior, Wisc. on October 23, 1920 but moved to Two Harbors shortly after. She attended the local schools and graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1939.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Jennie Felland, brother Tollef, and sister Ardella.

Ruby lived in White Bear, Little Falls and other Minnesota cities until she moved to Tucson, Ariz. In 1961 she moved to Sacramento. Ruby was employed by the UCD Professional Service Group, retiring in 1984. She was the mother of John Fink, devoted grandmother of Leslie (Bill) Greep, great-grandmother of Catilin and Benjamin, aunt of Barbara Groff and family, all of Sacramento. Also devoted grandmother of Erica Fink, great-grandmother of Alexandria, aunt of James Felland and son, all of Nevada. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Edith (Felland) Strand of Sacramento, uncle Alvin Fjeran and family and many cousins in Two Harbors and vicinity.

There will be a memorial service in Sacramento for friends and relatives on February 20 at the Strand home. There will also be a service in Two Harbors in August. Her ashes will be placed in the Felland family plot in the Lakeview Cemetery. Friends and relatives will be notified of future date.

Howard H. Anderson
Howard H. Anderson, 74, Two Harbors, died Monday, March 15, 1999 in the Lake View Home. He was born June 11, 1924 to Gotfred and Olga (Gran) Anderson in Two Harbors, where he was a lifelong resident.

He was employed by the DM&IR Railway in the power plant for 18 years until 1963, when he went to work at the Minnesota Department of Transportation in highway maintenance, until his retirement in 1986. He was also self-employed in snow removal and local gravel and top-soil hauling.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Norman. After his retirement he enjoyed gardening and feeding deer and birds at his home. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Loyal Order of Moose.

Howard is survived by his wife, Beverly; three step-sons, Dean Rogge of Poplar, David Rogge of Two Harbors and Steven Rogge of Duluth; a brother, Gordy Anderson; and a sister, Florence Peterson, both of Two Harbors; seven grandchildren a great-grandchild and 10 nieces and nephews.

Services were held Wednesday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Cecilia Fox
Cecilia Fox, 99, Two Harbors, died Monday, March 15, 1999 at the Lake View Home in Two Harbors.

She was born to Henry and Rosella (LeMay) Fox, January 8, 1900 in Duluth. She moved to Two Harbors in 1911 and then to Newberry, Mich. where she worked as a nurses aide at a State Hospital. She returned to Two Harbors and worked at former Burns and Christiansen and Lake View Memorial Hospital.

She is preceded in death by parents, brothers Paul and Donald, and sisters Mabel, Abby and Edna.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services were held March 17 at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Two Harbors.

Esther E. Jones
Esther E. Jones, 86, Two Harbors, died Monday, March 15, 1999 at the Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors.

She was born to John and Eliza (Osterholm) Granberg August 20, 1912 in Two Harbors. She was a life-long resident of Two Harbors and was employed by former CHC Board and Care as a nurses aide for 14 years.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and Women of the Moose.

She is preceded in death by husband Lawrence; son Robert; and brother David Granberg.

She is survived by sons Donald (Jenny) and Paul (Nancy), both of Two Harbors; daughter Dorothy McGlone of Independence, Mo.; daughter-in-law Elaine Jones of Minneapolis; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 17 at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday, March 18 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial at Lakeview Cemetery.
