Raymond A. Rosen
Raymond A. Rosen, 86, Two Harbors, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in the Lake View Home. He was born July 5, 1912 in Two Harbors to Gustav and Meggy (Anderson) Rosen. He grew up and attended schools in Two Harbors, graduating from high school in 1930. He was employed as a wheelsman on Great Lakes ore carriers for several years, then worked as a carman for the DM&IR Railway from 1947 until his retirement. He made his home in Duluth from 1962 until returning to Two Harbors in 1996. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold and Ralph Rosen; his sisters, Florence Rosen Ronning and Alice Rosen Elm; and a special friend, Concetta Cucinelli.

Ray is survived by his sister, Margaret Lujan of Two Harbors and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held April 3 in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors.

Ernest A. Heinonen
Ernest A. Heinonen, 74, Duluth Township, died Monday, April 12, 1999 at his home.

He was born to David and Niemi (Niemala) Heinonen on April 17, 1924 in Chisholm, Minn. He grew up in the Wolf Lake area, then worked as a farmer and logger there. He moved to the Iron Range and worked in a bakery in Nashwauk. In the early 1950’s he moved to the Two Harbors area and worked for Kimberly-Clark and later worked at Jeno’s in Duluth and Azcon Corporation until retiring. He enjoyed fishing in his free time.

He is preceded in death by his wife Lorraine in 1994.

He is survived by his son David of Two Harbors; four daughters, Toni McGovern of Proctor, Debbie Heinonen of Brookston, Vicky Plunkett of Two Harbors and Cheryl Stavig of Ely; a brother, Arnold Hillstrom of Two Harbors; three sisters, Mae Koski of Newburg, Ore., Elvie Thompson of Largo, Fla., and Lillian Hanson of Two Harbors; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service Thursday, April 15 in French River Lutheran Church, 5310 Ryan Rd., Duluth. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Clara J. Salo
Clara J. (Hillman) Salo, 92, of West Bend, Wisc., formerly of Two Harbors, died Saturday, April 17, 1999 at her residence in West Bend.

She was born on July 1, 1906 in Two Harbors to the late John S. and Lydia (Strandberg) Hillman. Clara went to school to become a teacher and taught in a one-room school house. She married Charles Salo on July 3, 1940 in Minneapolis. The couple moved from Two Harbors to West Bend in 1974 and spent their winters in Lake Worth, Fla. Clara’s husband preceded her in death on October 8, 1986.

She is survived by a nephew, Lawrence Hillman of West Bend, a great-niece, Kristin (Patrick) Wanzeck of West Bend; 2 great-nephews, John (Therese Rosenthal) Hillman of West Bend and Charles (Gaytha) Hillman of West Bend; two sisters-in-law, Christine Salo of Warroad and Alice Salo of Lake Worth; a special caretaker, Jade Wanzeck of West Bend; great-great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Martha, and 2 brothers, Carl and George.

Private family funeral services will be held with burial at Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend. Memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church, West Bend, are appreciated.

Larry Joseph Bahr
Larry J. Bahr, 60, Lax Lake, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at the Lake View Home in Two Harbors.

He was born to Joseph Jr. and Elsie (LaCroix) Bahr July 7, 1938 in Bemidji, Minn. He grew up in Bemidji, graduated from high school and married Audrey Johnson in 1956. In 1956 he moved to Silver Bay where he was employed by Reserve Mining as a belt repairman until 1987. Since his retirement he was self-employed as a trucker. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and trucking.

He is preceded in death by daughter Terri Jo in 1965, sister Linda Thompson, and his parents.

He is survived by wife Tootsie of Lax Lake; daughters Jane (Russ) Huseby of Lax Lake and Sharon (Steve) Kottke of Mountain Iron; sisters Shirley (Dean) Johnson of Toledo, Wash., Julie (Gordy) Marquardt of Silver Bay, and Bonnie (Rick) Laumb of Osseo, Minn.; grandchildren Larry and McKenzie Banks and Amanda Jo and Brady Huseby.

Service will be Saturday, May 8, 1999 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Silver Bay. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Bertil L. (Bert) Hanson
Bertil L. Hanson, 86, Seattle, Wash., formerly of Two Harbors, passed away April 7, 1999, at Northwest Hospital, Seattle.

Bert was born to Victor and Jennie Hanson in Lake Nebagamon, Wis., on January 7, 1913. He graduated from Two Harbors High School., later moving to Sheboygan, Wis., and was employed at Kohler Co. for many years, moving to Seattle in 1954 and employed by Boeing until his retirement in 1975. He was a longtime member of Haller Lake Methodist Church and a devoted Christian.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, his son Ted, brothers Reuben, Raymond, Roy, Eugene, Robert, Edward, and his sister, Helen M. Larson.

He is survived by his daughter Jennie of Seattle and grandson Ted and family. He is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Marie Kuchera Betzler
Marie K. Betzler, 77, Two Harbors, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born to Anthony and Gizela (Gayin) Kuchera June 12, 1921 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She grew up in Cincinnati and at the age of 27 moved to Beaver Bay. She married Joseph Betzler on August 28, 1948.

She was an active member of VFW Women’s Auxiliary, 4-H, Golden Age, Zion Lutheran Church in Finland and Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking, many other crafts, cooking and reading. Marie will always be remembered as a caring and God loving person.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers Dominic, David and Joseph.

She is survived by her sons and daughters, Joseph (Barbara) of New Hope, Rebecca (Victor) Pruse of Silver Bay, Jeffrey (Terryann) of Lindstrom and Barbara (Andy) Eickstadt of Bemidji; brothers John Kuchera of Cincinnati and Frank Kuchera of Lehigh Acres, Fla.,; sisters Ethel Beard of Tampa, Shirley Schroeder of Shelton, Conn., and Joyce Rowland from Hamilton, Ohio; 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Visitation with bars and coffee 12:30 p.m. to the 1:30 p.m. service Thursday, May 6 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial will follow at Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery, Beaver Bay Township. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Anselm F. Johnson
Anselm F. Johnson, 97, Two Harbors, died Friday, May 7, 1999, at the Sunrise Home in Two Harbors.

Anselm was born May 21, 1901, the eldest child of Fred and Emma (Waxlax) Johnson. He grew up at Lax Lake where he and his father ran a sawmill operation. Anselm saw his first car at the age of 12 and his lifelong love affair with cars and engines began. He moved his family to Two Harbors in the early 1920’s, worked for the State Highway Department and later for the Lake County Highway Department for 16 years. He built and operated the Conoco Service Station from 1939 until he retired in 1967. He enjoyed his work, travel, fishing and telling stories of long ago. Most of all he enjoyed the babies of his family. May he rest in peace.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice, in 1944; his second wife, Hilma in 1992; a son, Norman Michael Johnson; 2 brothers, Arny and Everett; a sister, Ethel Hanson; and two grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, James (Peggy) of St. Laurent, Canada, and Wayne (Carolyn) of Two Harbors; daughters Judith (Bert) Price of Zapapta, Texas, Janice (Walter) Braun of Bogota, N.J., Jennifer (Carl) Skamfer of Downing, Wisc., Rita (Roger) Cameron of Two Harbors, and step-daughter LeMae (Maynard) Lawrence of Carlton; brothers Einar of Genesee, Idaho; 29 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Ted Hanson.

Services were held on Tuesday in Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors, followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.

Blanche E. Barthell
Blanche Eloise Barthell, 81, Larsmont, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at the Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors.

She was born to Frank and Laura Wells on May 6, 1918, in Fordsville, Ky. She grew up in Kentucky, and married Milton Barthell on March 1, 1941. They lived in Chicago for over 30 years where she worked as a bookkeeper in the family painting business. She moved to Larsmont in 1977 and operated Barthell’s Cabins.

She enjoyed crocheting, decorating and collecting porcelain dolls.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by husband Milton; son Bob (Karen) and daughter Pam Wolfe, all of Larsmont; brother and sisters Virgil Wells, Laura Ball and Lula Belle Woodward, all of Owensboro, Ky.; grandchildren Rob (Lisa) Barthell, Andy Barthell, and Lula Wolfe.

Services were held Tuesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Two Harbors, followed by burial at Lakeview Cemetery.

Marlene Anne Oberle-Montgomery
6-9-41 - 5-21-99
Shortly after midnight on the morning of May 21 Marlene Oberle-Montgomery left this spiritual plane as she lived her life, with honesty, integrity, demanding truth, and giving freely of herself to all who needed her. Marlene had enough love to give some to each of us.

Lloyd P. Munson
Lloyd P. Munson, 81, Silver Bay, died Friday, May 21, 1999, at Lake View Home in Two Harbors.

He was born March 24, 1918 to Carl Edwin and Marie Emelia (Johnson) Monson in Hayward, Wis., where he grew up and attended schools, and worked as a logger, worked at the creamery, and drove a milk truck. He moved to Silver Bay in 1955 and was employed by Reserve Mining Company as a pipefitter until retiring in 1980.

He was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church, Silver Bay Golden Age Club and AARP. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening and cooking.

He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy in 1989.

He is survived by daughters Sandra (Jack) Becker of Afton, Minn. and Sharon (Donald) Cowman of Longwood, Fla.; brothers Bob Monson of Hayward and Henry Monson of Jackson, Wis.; sisters Esther Gagner of St. Louis Park, Clara Moyer and Anna Hanson, both of Hayward; sisters-in-law Betty Munson of St. Paul, Babe Monson of Beaver Bay, and Millie Monson of Hayward; grandchildren Kim, Jenny, Cari and Kristin; great-grandchildren Mandy, Christopher and Matthew.

Services were held May 25 at Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay. Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Betty L. Kvas
Betty L. Kvas, 63, Silver Bay, passed away in her home on May 20, 1999. She is survived by her husband Edward of Silver Bay; a son, Dr. Jeff (Dena) Ladd of Bryan, Ohio; sisters Shirley Jarvis of Mesa, Colo. and Judy Randal of Longmount, Colo.; a brother, Rodney Smith of Laramie, Wyo; her stepfather, Jack Smith of Grand Junction, Colo. and grandchildren Brandon and Jack. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Ladd, and a daughter, Julie Marie Ladd.

Services will be held in Duluth at a later date.

Stanley R. Gulbranson
Stanley R. Gulbranson, 53, Duluth, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, in Lake View Memorial Home, after a very brief but extremely painful struggle with Multiple Myeloma, a form of bone cancer.

He was born in Duluth on January 4, 1946, to Kenneth and Greta Gulbranson. He graduated from Hermantown High School in 1965. He was married from November 1966 to May 1997 to Joanne M. Olsen. He joined the United States Army in 1967 and served until his Honorable Discharge in 1970. He served in the Army National Guard from 1972 until 1978. He was employed with Cummins Diesel Sales, Inc. from 1970 until 1986. He purchased a percentage of Trucks of Duluth, Inc. in 1986, where he worked as general manager until 1989. In 1989, he purchased Clover Valley General Store. He taught in the diesel mechanics program at Duluth Technical College from 1990 to 1993. From 1993 to 1996 he worked at Clover Valley General Store, while doing logging and other miscellaneous work on the side. He then joined the wonderful team of people at Moe and Nevin, Inc., where he was employed as an insurance adjuster from 1996 until the day he passed away.

He was a very active member in many communities and organiza-tions, one of those being a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1478 of West Duluth. He was also constable for Normanna Township from 1979 to 1984.

Stan is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Gulbranson. He is survived by his mother, Greta Gulbranson, his sisters and brothers, Joyce Ritchie, John Gulbranson, Christina James (Mark), and Jeffrey Gulbranson; his children, Shana Gulbranson-Bugge (Dan), Troy Gulbranson and Leah Hulst (Corey); and his significant other, Linda Jones.

Memorial services will be held in the lower level banquet room at the Lakeview Castle on the North Shore Drive on Saturday, May 29 at 11 a.m., with a luncheon following the services.

In lieu of flower arrangements, we ask you all to please donate to your local American Cancer Society Chapter, in memory of Stan.

Eleanor A. Hillman
5-17-99
Eleanor A. Hillman, 98, Two Harbors, died Monday, May 17, 1999 in the Lake View Home. She was born November 23, 1900 in Vienna Township, near Luverne, Minn., and was the last surviving child of 15 children born to Thomas and Angela (Callahan) Murphy. Their family moved to Two Harbors in 1903 and she had made her home here since that time. During World War II she was employed by the DM&IR Railway. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin Hillman in 1970 and by a granddaughter, Katherine Laska in 1998. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Eleanor is survived by her son Darrell (Vera) Hillman of Hermantown, a long-time special friend, Floyd Skoog of Two Harbors; three grandchildren, Tom (Patty) of Duluth, Jim (Roseanne) of South Cairo, N.Y. and Ann (Larry) Rapp of Duluth; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 21 in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.

Oscar Henry Neva
5-12-99
Oscar H. Neva, 87, Two Harbors, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999 at the Lake View Home in Two Harbors.

He was born February 21, 1912 in Crystal Falls, Mich. He grew up in Michigan and served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was awarded the Silver Star. Oscar was employed by U.S. Steel Great Lakes Fleet, DM&IR Railroad in Two Harbors and the Minnesota Transfer Railroad in St. Paul. He retired to Two Harbors in 1974. He married Margaret Compher in 1946 and she preceded him in death in 1987.

Oscar was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Two Harbors, National Rifle Association and the American Legion. He loved hunting, fishing, and taught archery.

He is survived by son Robert (Beryl) Compher from Hobson, Mont.; daughter Genevieve (Steven) Crofoot from Wichita, Kans.; and 6 grandchildren.

Services were May 15 at Grace Baptist Church in Two Harbors. Burial at Lakeview Cemetery.
