Toivo Ahlbeck
Toivo Ahlbeck, 76, Finland, died Monday, April 7, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth.

He was born Oct. 8, 1926, to Arthur and Senja (Worlein) Ahlbeck in Finland, where he was a life-long resident. He was employed by DM&IR Railroad in Isabella for several years, then worked as a rock driller in the construction industry with Union Local #1091 in Duluth.

Toivo enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, and especially enjoyed his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Anne Lehtinen, Sylvia Sundvick and Mary Sundvick; and a grandson, Kevin Marble Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice; three sons, William, Leslie (Crystal) and Richard (Debbie) all of Finland; a daughter, Joyce (Kevin) Marble of Ray; a brother, Urho Ahlbeck of Finland; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service on Thursday in Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Crystal Bay Cemetery, Finland.

Robert Lloyd Gow
Robert L. Gow, 75, Two Harbors, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in Lake View Memorial Hospital, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.

He was born March 18, 1928, to Harold and Bertha (Johnson) Gow in Two Harbors. He was a lifelong resident of Two Harbors, graduated from high school in 1946 and attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army in the 99th Military Government Group and during the Korean War he served in the 490th Engineer Light Equipment Company. Bob was employed as senior general accountant for Reserve Mining Company from 1952-1983 and also worked as the executive director for the Housing and Redevelopment Authority of Two Harbors from 1967-1993. he was a member of Loyal Order of Moose (past governor), Masonic Fortitude Lodge #188, Two Harbors Federal Credit Union Board of Directors for 12 years and board president for six years, and Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Two Harbors. He was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by wife, Jo Ann; sons, Kevin (Mary Jo) Gow and David (Kay) Gow both of Duluth; daughters, Karen (Gary) Gustafson of Silver Bay and Debra (Michael) Daniel of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; grandchildren, Jay, Kristi, Jason, Nick, Kim, Ashley, David, Sarah, Joshua and Samantha; and a great-grandson, Derek.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service, Friday, April 11, 2003, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Darlene Kay (Tibbetts) Anderson
Darlene Kay (Tibbetts) Anderson passed away in her home on Feb. 1, 2004, surrounded by her family after a long brave battle with cancer.

Darlene was the daughter of James Warren Tibbetts and Emma Johanna (Scheffler) Tibbetts. She was born in Aitkin on Feb. 27, 1940. She attended Aitkin Public School and Aitkin High School. Darlene was united in marriage to John Anderson on May 11, 1957, in Aitkin. Darlene worked for the Co-op Store in Palisade and the Ben Franklin Store in Aitkin.

She moved to Silver Bay in 1960. She worked for a local restaurant for 13 years. She started with the Minnesota Veterans Home as a nurse aide in 1992 until 2000. She also served 14 years on the Beaver Bay Township Board as treasurer and was on the Sychar Youth Board.

Darlene will always be remembered for the unconditional love she gave to those around her, the long time she gave of herself taking care of her parents and most of all for the love and care to her family.

Darlene is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Donna (Galen) Goutermont of Juneau, Alaska; two sons, Scott Anderson of Silver Bay, and Michael Anderson of Suisun, Calif.; three grandchildren, Pete Anderson of Silver Bay, Brandi Anderson of Reno, Nev., and Kristine (Casey) Collins of Casper, Wyo.; one great-grandchild, Kamee Goutermont of Casper, Wyo.; four brothers, James and Carol Tibbetts, Gerald and Sharon Tibbetts of Aitkin, Dale and Karen Tibbetts of Sauk Rapids, and Richard and Lois Tibbetts of Silver Bay; one sister, Beverly Rueger of Aitkin and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, cousins, aunts and uncles. She’ll truly be missed.

Memorial services were at Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay on Feb. 4, 2004, with a private interment at Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery. Arrangements are by The Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Esther Ann Anderson
Esther Ann Linnea Anderson, 83, Two Harbors, peacefully went to be with the Lord, Sunday, May 30, 2004, at the Sunrise Home.

She was born Jan. 6, 1921, to William and Hilma (Johnson) Swedberg in Two Harbors, where she was a life-long resident. She graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1940 and married Alden Anderson in 1944. She was a mother and homemaker through the years, and also worked at Helgeson’s Ben Franklin for several years.

Esther was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and its quilting group. While growing up, she was loving and protective of her special brother, Harry. She loved animals, especially cats and her favorite Siamese, Boots, and her dogs, Dugan and Fritz. She enjoyed long walks, sewing, stitchery and frequent trips to visit her relatives in St. Paul. She was a kind, caring lady with never an unkind word. She had a special gift with African violets and will be remembered as a fun-loving and spirited grandmother.

Esther is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Harry Swedberg; son, John Anderson; and her husband, Alden.

She is survived by her devoted son, Paul (Stacey) Anderson of Two Harbors; and adoring grandchildren, Laura (fiance, Tyson Jackson) and Caitlin.

A celebration of Esther’s life was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Private burial at a later time at Lakeview Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Clarence Lloyd Mattson
Clarence L. Mattson, 75, Two Harbors and formerly of Silver Bay, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at Lake View Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 25, 1928, to Sever and Hilda (Korpi) Mattson in Finlayson. He graduated from Vocational High School in Minneapolis and moved to Two Harbors where he was employed by the DM&IR Railroad. He married Rosalyne Hanson on Dec. 18, 1948.

He moved to the Twin Cities in 1968 where he was employed by the Alter Company and later Hamline University as plant superintendent until retiring to Silver Bay in 1989. He enjoyed carving and wood working.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and son, Terrance in 1998.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rosalyne; daughters, Kathleen Wittlief of Stacy and Patrice (David) Greuling of Shoreview; brother, Lester (Marlene) of Two Harbors; sister, Janice (Ray) Anderson; grandchildren, Derek Wittlief, Andrea Wittlief, Scott Greuling, Chris Greuling and Amber Wallner; great-grandson, Triston; great-granddaughter, Parker Leigh; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were June 1, 2004, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Stella Marie Mattson
Stella M. Mattson, 71, Two Harbors, died Friday, March 31, 2006, at the Sunrise Home.

She was born Sept. 4, 1934, to Ralph and Mary (DeLuca) Cherro in Aurora. She graduated from Aurora High School, and worked at the Edgewater and Senior Friends. She married Larry Mattson on Feb. 20, 1954.

She attended Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Two Harbors. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Larry; daughters, Deborah and Mary; brothers, James Cherro and Arthur Cherro; and sisters, Camella Wilson and Agnus (Cherro) Marchall.

Stella is survived by her son Lawrence (Theresa) Mattson, Clover Valley; daughter, Beverly (Eric) Melander, Two Harbors; brothers, Leon (Bev) Cherro, Aurora, and Don (Doris) Cherro, Ontonagon, Mich.; grandsons and granddaughters, Michael (Jennifer), Robert, Jill, Amanda and Krystal; great-grandson Zack; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of the Christian Burial was on April 3, 2006, at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Duluth Township. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Alvin B. Fjeran
Alvin B. Fjeran, 91, Two Harbors, died Sunday, April 2, 2006, at Lake View Memorial Nursing Home.

He was born Dec. 1, 1914, in Harmony, to Andrew and Berntine (Rygg) Fjeran.

Alvin is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel, in 1988; two sons, Richard and Brian; sister Jennie; and brother Jack.

He is survived by his daughters, Coral (Ed) McMahon, Rapid City, S.D., and Darlene Hoagland, Maple Lake; sons Bruce Fjeran and Roger Fjeran, both of Two Harbors; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

At Alvin’s request, no public services will be held.

Service entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 218-624-5200.

Ethel M. Maas
Ethel M. Maas, 90, Two Harbors, formerly of St. Paul and Duluth, died on Saturday, April 1, 2006, at Sunrise Home.

She was born in St. Paul, March 28, 1916, to John and Minnie Strand. She married Clyde Maas on Jan. 3, 1942 in Lauderdale.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde; daughter Wanda (Jim) Stillman; sons Terry (Carolyn) Maas and Allen Maas; grandchildren Kelly Stillman, Kim Stillman, Ben Maas, Joe (Carla) Maas, and Elisabeth Maas; and sister Natalie (Robert) Lundholm.

Memorial service will be at 1 p.m., Friday, April 7, at Bayview Terrace, Two Harbors.

Arrangements made by the Cremation Society of Minnesota, Duluth, 218-624-5200.

Roger Jerry Viktora
Roger J. Viktora, 58, Two Harbors, died Monday, April 3, 2006, at home.

He was born June 1, 1947, to Jerry and Mary Ann (Maciejeski) Viktora in Two Harbors, where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1965.

Roger served in the U.S. Navy from 1965-84, then lived in California where he worked as a cabinetmaker. He later returned to Two Harbors where he was employed by Two Harbors Machine Shop and Irresistible Ink.

Roger is survived by his parents, Jerry and Mary Ann, Two Harbors; and brother David (Rhonda) Viktora, Hibbing.

Private services will be held at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.

Agnes G. Wallace
Agnes G. Wallace, 83, Duluth, died Thursday, July 15, 1999. A loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, aunt and friend known as “grandma Ag” to many. She was born April 3, 1916 in Broken Bow, Neb. to James and Mary Downs, and moved to Duluth as a child. She was married in 1936 to Bruce Wallace and lived on Park Point for the majority of her life. She was an active member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, PTA, Owletts, AARP and Buoys and Gulls.

Agnes is preceded in death by her husband David (1979); one brother and four sisters.

Loving mother of Geraldine “Pat” (Jim) Hanson; sister of Rita Dunleavy,; grandmother of Laura Hanson, Carolyn (Clyde) Bergman, Ann (Mike) Arneson, Joan (Gary) Krecker, Eric (Viola) Hanson and Chris Hanson. Great-grandmother of 11. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were held July 19 in Duluth. Memorials preferred to Our Lady of Mercy, the food shelf or donor’s choice. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors.

Jessie M. (Spindler) Brandine
Jessie M. (Spindler) Brandine, 90, St. Anne’s Senior Residence, Duluth, passed away July 13, 1999 while at St. Mary’s Medical Center Hospice.

She was the first child of James A. and Jean M. (Sommerville) Spindler. Jessie was born in Duluth on July 22, 1908. She graduated with the class of 1929 from Central High School. Jessie married Elmer R. Brandine on December 6, 1933 and they resided in Cleveland and Willowick, Ohio for 35 years. Upon Elmer’s retirement from T.R.W. they returned to Minnesota. They lived in Silver Bay for 10 years before moving to Duluth. Jessie was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay.

Jessie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and a brother, Robert. She is survived by her sister, Ruth (Glenn) Ericson of Duluth; her brother, Thomas (Lorraine) Spindler of Las Vegas; 4 nephews, Robert (Diane) Ericson of Buffalo, Minn., James (Barbara) Ericson of Las Cruces, N. Mex., John (Pamela) Ericson of New Hope, Minn., and Dale (Ellen) Spindler of Simi Valley, Calif.; a niece, Lynda (Spindler) Warner, also of Simi Valley, Calif.

Services were held July 17.

George E. Schramm
George E. Schramm, 81, Silver Bay, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospice, Duluth. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and friend to many, his devotion to family, warm smile, and compassion for others will be deeply missed. Born June 5, 1918 to Henry and Ella (Hawn) Schramm at Salisbury, Pa., he graduated from Salisbury Elk Lick High School and later married his high school sweetheart, Jane Leckemby, on June 24, 1940. They made their home in Pennsylvania until 1951, when he moved his family to Minnesota to begin working for the construction company building the taconite plant at Silver Bay, installing and maintaining all the two-way radios in company vehicles and trains. Upon completion of the construction, he joined Reserve Mining Company as an electrician, remaining in that position until his retirement in 1980. He, along with Jane, enjoyed winters in Gulf Shores, Ala., following retirement for a number of years, an occasional golf game, cards, traveling and visiting family.

He was a charter member of Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William; and three sisters - Lydia Schramm, Edna Werner and Esther Brown. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane; two daughters, Karen (John) Melville of Stillwater, Holly (Jeff) Thomas of Cumberland, Wisc.; two sons, Edward (Sandra) Schramm of River Falls, Wisc., and Joseph (Kathy) Schramm of Owatonna, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Randy (Mary) Schramm, Damon Schramm, Dana (Kari) Schramm, Lara (Ross) Simonson, Scott (Mary) Thomas, Shawn (Kelly) Thomas, Ryan (Shannon) Melville, Mark Melville, Jason Schramm, Sara Schramm, Mandy Schramm; and six great-grandchildren, Jaydon Simonson, Kylee Schramm, Robert Thomas, Fredrick Thomas, Trevor Thomas and Taylor Thomas; and two sisters, Ruth Kinsinger and Mary Ackerman, both of Pennsylvania.

Services were held July 16 in Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay, followed by burial in Silver Bay Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
