Norman R. Simonsen
Norman Simonsen, 79, Two Harbors, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at the Lakeshore Lutheran Home in Duluth.

He was born April 12, 1925, to Oline and Anton Simonsen, one of 12 children, in Two Harbors, where he was a lifelong resident. During World War II he served in the 172nd Field Artillery earning five campaign ribbons.

Norman was employed as a pipe fitter by the DM&IR Railroad for many years, retiring in 1980. He also owned and operated school buses for 17 years. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He also enjoyed gardening, good food and spending time with his family.

Norman is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pauline (Hansen); children, Peggy (Bruce) Lind, Thomas (Mary) Simonsen, Carol (Don) Johnson, Mary (Denis Frieden) Simonsen, Jill (Craig) Ellquist and Joni (Steve) Brandt; grandchildren, Crystal (Wade) LeBlanc, Curt Lind, Jennifer (Mike) Kempfert, Angela (Shane) Helget, Steve Simonsen, Rebecca Simonsen, Megan Simonsen, Julie (Bryan) Peterson, David Ellquist, Courtney Brandt and Cody Brandt; great-grandchildren, Brock, Troy and Gavin LeBlanc, and Samantha and Gabriel Kempfert; and sisters, Olga Nelson, Thora Lamp, Clara Walberg and Lydia Makowski.

Services were Nov. 8, 2004, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial in Lakeview Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Michel Serge Beaupre
Michel Serge Beaupre, 62, Grand Marais, died on July 27, 2005, in Plymouth, at the home of Dean Jacobsen with family members beside him. He fought a short, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Sainte-Clothilde-de-Horton in Quebec, Canada. He was extremely proud of his French-Canadian heritage. Michel had lived in Grand Marais since 1982. he was a member of the United Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 568 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. For the past few years, he was an electrical inspector in Cook and Lake counties.

In earlier years, he had worked as a journeyman electrician throughout Canada as well as the United States. He made friends wherever he went and his French accent endeared him to all who knew him. Michel met his wife, Bev Denyes, in 1979 at a dance in Silver Bay and liked to tell friends “we’ve been dancing ever since.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Armand and Valeda Lefebvre Beaupre; infant sister, Claire; and brother, Paul, all of Quebec, Canada.

Michel is survived by his wife of 23 years, Bev Denyes, Grand Marais; his daughter, Julie Beaupre (Martin Harrisson) and their children (granddaughters) Megan and Emy; sisters, Therese and Micheline Beaupre; brothers, Yves (Andree) and Jean Beaupre, all of the Montreal, Quebec, Canada area; stepsons, Keith Jacobsen and his children Melissa and Adam, Maple Grove; Marty Jacobsen, Pembroke Pines, Fla.; and Dean Jacobsen and his children Vanessa and Stein, Plymouth. His grandchildren called him “Papa” and they all lvoed him so very much. He is also survived by nieces and nephews in Canada as well as the United States, and many special friends.

A gathering of family and friends at 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass on Saturday, Aug. 20, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grand Marais, burial at Maple Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais. An additional service will be held in September at Sainte-Clothilde-de-Horton in Quebec, where his parents are buried. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

John W. "Red" Frikken Jr.
John W. Frikken Jr., 81, Two Harbors, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at Lake View Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Two Harbors, followed by a gathering of family and friends at the Moose Lodge. Private graveside services will be held at Lakeview Cemetery at a later date.

Lillian Clara Maxwell
Lillian Clara Maxwell died Aug. 4, 2005, at her home in Beaver Bay.

She was born July 6, 1922, to Norwegian immigrant parents Edward Mattson (Ruksvaag) and Olise Lovold Mattson. She lived most of her life in East Beaver Bay, attended Central High School in Minneapolis and graduated from the University of Chicago, where she earned degrees in English literature and social studies. She taught school in Hopkins and Stewart, and was a teacher/librarian on the islands of Maui and Oahu when Hawaii was still a territory. In 1952, she married Clinton W. Maxwell in San Francisco, and returned to the North Shore to raise her family.

Lillian’s passion was politics. She was active in the League of Women Voters and worked on many GOP campaigns, including her own run for the state legislature in 1972. She was active in serving at Sychar Lutheran Church, was a member of St. Johns By the Lake Episcopal Church and was instrumental in starting the Silver Bay Public Library.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Milton (Jean) and Kermit (Solvay) Mattson; and brothers-in-law Richard and Oscar.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Max; her children Sally (Dean) Gies, Clinton (Gigi), Sandy (Robert Cunningham), Jana (Ron) Olson; grandchildren, Elsa, Walter, Robin, Sean, Jamie, Guthrie and Lief; sisters, Charlotte Ulland and Edel Schneiderhan; three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Friends and family honored Lillian's life on Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at the Beaver Bay Community Center. Memorials preferred to St. Mary’s Hospice, Save Lake Superior Association or the candidate of one’s choice.

Cecil John Eide
Cecil J. Eide, 86, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, after a short stay at Lake View Home. He was born March 16, 1919, to Norwegian immigrant parents, John and Hille (Jacobsen) Eide in Two Harbors, where he was the sixth of seven siblings, and a lifelong resident.

Cecil served his country in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked for the CCC in Cook, and later at Gooseberry State Park. He was employed as machine operator on the ore docks for the D.M. & I. R. Railroad from 1940 until retiring in August 1979.

He married Marie Olson on March 19, 1949. He was a member of the Sons of Norway, VASA Lodge, VFW and the American Legion. Cecil was an adherent of The Salvation Army and a member of their Forever 50 Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, family gatherings and delivering Meals On Wheels with Marie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herman, Anker, Frank and Maynard; sisters, Harriet Collins and Helen Nylund; son-in-law, John “Doug” Spicer; and infant grandson, Robert Eide.

Cecil is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Marie, Two Harbors; son, Dale (Sue), Owatonna; two daughters, Beth (Richard) Rosen, Zimmerman, and RuthAnn Eide, St. Paul; 10 grandchildren, Tanner Spicer, Jerrod Spicer, Zakery Spicer, Nathan Spicer and Lauranna Spicer, Patrick Eide, Karen Eide and Lisa Eide; and two foster grandchildren, Roseanne (Hess) Allen and Clayton Hess; 10 great-grandchildren; and beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A celebration memorial service will be at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at 1 p.m. Officiated by Lt. Colonels Marvin and Bodil Dahl and Captains Don and Heather LaMar of The Salvation Army. Private family internment at Lakeview Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home. Memorials preferred to Two Harbors-area civic groups.

Dorothy M. (Anderson) Herschbach
Dorothy (Anderson) Herschbach, 61, Two Harbors, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, in her home after battling cancer for several months.

Dorothy was born Jan. 22, 1944, to Chester and Pearl (Huhtala) Anderson in Grand Rapids, and grew up in La Prairie. She graduated from Greenway High School in 1962, and from St. Luke’s School Of Nursing in 1965. She married Dennis Herschbach on Jan. 30, 1965, and moved to Two Harbors in August of that same year.

Dorothy worked as a nurse during her early years in Two Harbors, then stayed home to raise her family, and resumed work in her profession as a WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) nurse, a home health nurse, a child birth educator and a breast feeding educator.

Dorothy was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church from 1965-97, when she transferred her membership to Our Saviour’s Lutheran of Castle Danger.

While at Bethlehem she was instrumental in initiating Tuesday School, a program for pre-school children and their mothers. She was active in many other aspects of the church. At Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church she supported and assisted her husband in his ministry to that congregation. She also was an advisor to the MOPS (Mother’s of Pre-school Children) program in the Two Harbors area. She was dedicated to helping young mothers and their children.

She enjoyed sewing, crafts and home decorating, but her true passion in life was her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant sister, Marjorie.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Dennis; two daughters, Letty (Leo) Faller, Cottage Grove, and Jennifer (Andrew) Akenson, Hudson, Wis.; a son, Karl (Brandy), Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Linda (Angelo) DeLuca, Grand Rapids; six grandchildren, Roman Faller, Olivia Faller, John Christian Faller, Elsa Akenson, Emma Akenson, and soon-to-be-born Eason Herschbach.

Funeral service was at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors, followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery.

Timothy A. Flynn
Timothy A. Flynn, 50, Duluth, died on Aug. 3, 2005, of Epstein Barr virus.

He was born to Miriam and Clarence Flynn and raised in West Duluth. Tim’s post-secondary career path spanned a four-year enlistment with the Marine Corps, an associate of science degree from University of Minnesota-Crookston, the U.S. Forestry Service, and BNSF Railroad for over 25 years.

Tim was a lover of life and nature. He relished a pick-up game of basketball, tennis, soccer or hockey with his children; fishing, hunting, gardening and landscaping his yard; camping and boating with family, or playing Chef Flynn in the kitchen.

Tim was a diehard Viking’s fan, but his true passion in life was his family.

Tim is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Sylas (Tina), Nicholas and Sarah; brothers, John (Antonette) Flynn and Jeff (Caillin) Flynn; sisters, Mary Jo Nygard and Mickey Joki; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Butch and Elsie Kolberg of Two Harbors; sisters-in-law Jolynn (Michael) Detlefsen, Wendy (Dave) Aro; and brother-in-law Ted (Jeanne) Kolberg; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews.

Funeral service was Monday, Aug. 8, with burial in Oneota Cemetery. Military rites accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Martha Helene Erickson
Martha Helene Erickson, 94, formerly of Two Harbors, died July 30, 2005, at Ebenezer Ridges Care Center in Burnsville.

She was born Sept. 28, 1910, to Adam and Elina (Pruki) Mattola in Ely, where she grew up and graduated from high school in 1928, Ely Junior College in 1930 and earned her bachelor of science degree from the University of Minnesota in 1932.

She taught elementary school in Chisholm and at the John A. Johnson and Minnehaha schools in Two Harbors, retiring in 1971.

On July 22, 1939, she married Russell Erickson of Two Harbors. After his death in 1999 she moved to Maplewood to be with her daughters.

Martha was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she was active in choir and was a soprano soloist, and with the Mary-Martha Circle for many years. She was also active in Alpha Delta Kappa teachers’ sorority, and her bridge and sewing clubs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell; sister, Gertrude Schaller; and all of her in-laws, Maurice Schaller, Doris and Anton Cornell, Ivar and Holly Erickson, and Walter and Sarah Erickson.

Martha is survived by her daughters Barbara (Loren) Holmstrom, Maplewood, and Mary Christopherson, Apple Valley; grandsons, Eric (Kris) Christopherson, Elk River, Mark Holmstrom and Jason Holsmstrom both of Shoreview; granddaughter, Ann (Thomas) Walchuk, Ely; great-grandsons, Chase, Payton and Dylan Christopherson; great-granddaughters, Elina and Nadia Walchuk; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend, Lillian Dwan, Two Harbors.

A memorial service will be held at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, 1669 Arcade St., St. Paul, 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 12. Burial will be Saturday, Sept. 17, Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Anderson Funeral Home and Cremation Service of St. Paul. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Emmanuel Lutheran Church are preferred.

John W. Frikken Jr.
John W. “Red” Frikken Jr., 81, Two Harbors, died unexpecteldy on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at Lake View Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 30, 1924, to John “Jack” Sr. and Mae Frikken in Staples. At the age of 19 he served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946. He returned, married Delores Bittner and moved to Two Harbors where they raised their family.

He ws employed as a machinist for the DM&IR Railroad until joining the Two Harbors police where he served for 27 years. He was a member of the Two Harbors Fire Department until retiring in the late ‘70s. He was self-employed as a carpenter for many years.

He received his honorary diploma from Staples High School Class of 2005. He was very active in his community and enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their various activities. Red was always willing to help anyone who needed it.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delores; sister, Elizabeth; and brothers, Ed and Bill.

Red is survived by his daughter and sons, Lynda (Bob Mrozik), John III (LuAnn) and Bruce (Brenda), all of Two Harbors; sister, Mae (Duane) Bartelson; brothers, Dick (Bea), Jim (Lois) and Burt (Evie); eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were Aug. 8, 2005, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Two Harbors. Burial at Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Citywide Agate Pride c/o Two Harbors High School or Two Harbors Yuth Soccer in memory of Red. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

David E. Amundson
David E. Amundson, 51, of Buffalo, passed away on Aug. 9, 2005, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Dave was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was so proud of his family and loved to spend time with them. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Dave worked as a carpenter for many years and truly enjoyed his work. His passion was riding his Harley and he lived his life as a Harley man. Dave also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworking.

Dave leaves us all with many cherished memories. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Jane Amundson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Colleen; sons, Kalo (Alicia), Kiley (Cassie) and Kary (Jen); two grandsons, Tyler and Justin; father, Clyde; sister, Linda (Mike) Donahue; many other relatives and friends.

A visitation was held Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo. Private interment was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred. The Peterson Chapel of Buffalo served the family.

Evelyn B. Kagol
Evelyn Kagol, 88, Silver Bay, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, in the Sunrise Home in Two Harbors.

She was born Feb. 4, 1917, to John and Olive Leona (Clifton) Dullum in Crosby, and had made her home in Silver Bay from 1956 until moving to Two Harbors last year. Evelyn was employed as a cook at the Reserve Mining Company Guest House for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; her sons, Donald and Stuart; and a sister, Lucille.

Evelyn is survived by a brother, Edward Dullum, Brainerd; a daughter-in-law, Mary Kagol, Olathe, Kan.; grandchildren, Carrie Kagol, Col. Christy Lawrence, David Kagol and Jennifer Mandel; great-grandchildren, Helena Erbe, Troy Lawrence, Tyler Lawrence and Megan Lawrence; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Silver Bay. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
