Dorothy Marguerite Nordlund
Our beloved aunt, Dorothy Marguerite Nordlund, was called to heaven and placed in the loving arms of our Lord on Nov. 6, 2006, at the Sunrise Home, Two Harbors, after a brief illness.

Dorothy was born on Dec. 9, 1914, in Fairmont, to Lindon Earl and Rena Janisch Crowther.

Dorothy Nordlund had been a prominent figure in the Two Harbors area for more than half a century. After receiving her teaching degree from the University of Oklahoma and later a masters degree from Illinois, Dorothy taught English and Latin in Wadena for two years. She then moved to Two Harbors and married Richard Nordlund.

As a young bride, Dorothy was turned down from teaching because back then you could not teach while you were married. To occupy her time she ran a boarding home where the railroad men and tourists could stay for $2 a night--there weren’t any motels in Two Harbors back then. She occupied her time by volunteering at the local library, and enjoyed sewing, knitting and embroidery.

After the Two Harbors High School superintendent retired, Dorothy finally got the chance to teach eighth-grade English, and did so until her retirement in 1980. She resided across the street from the high school for 56 years, serving as a bed and breakfast for tourists or boarding teachers.

Having never had children, Dorothy cherished the love and joy she received from her nieces and nephews. Throughout the years she treated them as if they were hers and shared holidays and vacations together. In her golden years the families would make trips from Texas, during the summer, to come and spend time with Aunt Dorothy. Dorothy loved to show them off to her friends.

She always was the great hostess and the Two Harbors historian. “The kids” enjoyed the times and travels with her around the area and the fine state of Minnesota. Aunt Dorothy was extremely proud of Two Harbors and the residents, many of whom are former students of hers. She has passed on a legacy of education and strong independence for all who were blessed to be in her company.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Addison Charles Crowther.

She is survived by her brother, Frederick Earl Crowther (Hope), Florida, and their son, Gary Crowther, Alabama; as well as a host of adoring nieces and nephews from Texas, including Earl Crowther (Geneva) , Belton, Texas, Loni Banks (John), San Antonio, Texas, Karen Crowther (Ron Millegan), Dripping Springs, Texas, Nancy Crowther, Austin, Texas, and Patricia Elbel (Gerald), San Antonio, Texas.

She is also survived by great-nephews, John Bradley Banks and Christopher Elbel, and great-nieces, Brandi Banks and Cathy Elbel, all residing in San Antonio.

Memorial Service: 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006 at the United Church, Two Harbors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the United Church. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
