Warren Johnson
Warren E. Johnson, age 85, Silver Bay, passed away on Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at the Lakewood Care Center in Staples.
Warren E. Johnson was born on March 2, 1921, in Wahpeton, N.D., to the late Oscar and Minnie (Nelson) Johnson.
Following his mother’s death, he moved to Kansas and lived with his uncle. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and fought forest fires, and drove trucks and heavy equipment building roads.
At the age of 19 he entered the Merchant Marines. He served in World War II in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific.
He was united in marriage to Anna Elizabeth MacPherson in March 1949 in New York. They lived in Alaska, Chicago, Duluth and Michigan, and then settled at Silver Bay in 1955. He worked for an electrical contractor during the construction of Reserve Mining. He retired as foreman in the power plant.
He is a member of the Sychar Lutheran Church. He enjoyed his family, especially the grandchildren, and wintering in Deming, N. M.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 45 years, Anna; one son, Thomas Andrew; one grandson, Rick Haiden; and nine brothers and sisters.
He is survived by one daughter, Kathleen “Katie” (Ted) Haiden, Minneapolis; one son, Philip Johnson, New Hope; one sister, Bernielle Gast, Fergus Falls; Neota Chap, Washington; one daughter-in-law, Carol (Dean) Griffith, Staples; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were Thursday, Nov. 16, at Sychar Lutheran Church, Silver Bay. Arrangements entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Home, Staples.
Leona Marie Hendrickson
Leona M. Hendrickson, 92, Two Harbors, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at home.
She was born Feb. 6, 1914, to Louis and Vitaline (Gervais) Mason in Two Harbors.
As a young lady, she was employed at the Two Harbors Public Library and later worked at the Community Health Center in the office and at Irresistible Ink in Two Harbors. Leona was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church and its Rosary Group and the VFW Auxiliary.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, in 1987.
Leona is survived by son, Fred (Linda) Hendrickson, Two Harbors; daughters, Louise (Douglas) Peterson, Crosby, and Theresa DiFranco, Hawaii; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at the Cavallin Funeral Home, and a private family Mass on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery at a later date.
Gudrun J. Sannes
Gudrun Sannes, 94, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at home.
She was born March 28, 1912, to Hans and Gunhild (Carlson) Ojard in Knife River, where she grew up and attended schools.
She married Christian Sannes Dec. 17, 1932, and they made their home in Larsmont since that time.
Gudrun was the last living charter member of Living Waters Fellowship, Two Harbors. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed baking and gardening.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Christian; sons, Paul and David Sannes; daughter, Linda Hurd; and brothers, Adolph, Hans, Harvey, Kenneth and William Ojard.
Gudrun is survived by her brother, Tom Ojard, Babbitt; sister, Juneth Bakk, Cook; grandchildren, Kevin (Julia) Hurd, Lakeville, Jeremy (Tricia) Hurd, Two Harbors, Dawn Siewert, Fargo, N.D., and Christi (Bob) Mosby, Oxford, Mich.; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Claire, Samuel, Sophia, Carter, Annika, Kaleb and Kennedy; son-in-law, Bob Hurd; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. service on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at Living Waters Fellowship, Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
Myrtise (Pookie) Christensen
Myrtise (Pookie) Christensen, 72, passed away Sunday, Nov. 12.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Art Lingren and Myrtle Lingren; and her beloved son, Steve Christensen.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Christensen; daughter, Nancy (LeRoy) Veness; grandsons, Joshua (Autum) Veness and Brandon Veness; great-granddaughters, Justice and Trinity Veness; sister, Barbara (Eugene) Nylund; brother, Jim (Kay) Lingren; beloved nieces, nephews, brother- and sister-in-law; and special cousin, Bob Long.
Memorial service at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 17, 2006, at Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors. Burial at Lakeview Cemetery.
June M. Gustafson
June M. Gustafson, 87, Two Harbors, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, at Lake View Memorial Hospital.
She was born, June 20, 1919, in Hermantown.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Gustav Gustafson; and son, Richard N. Gustafson.
She is survived by sons, Ted (Peggy) Gustafson, Grand Rapids, and Berndt (Debbie) Gustafson, Crosby; daughters, Linda Kiefer, of Emily, Elrose “Pixie” (Bruce) Lindberg, French River; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held. Burial at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Emily.
Martha Marie Bruggman
Martha M. Bruggman, 78, formerly of Lax Lake, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at Fairview Northland Medical Center, Princeton.
She was born May 5, 1928, to Francis and Myrtle (Nelson) Sheils in Watertown, Tenn.
As a young girl, she lived in Wrenshall until 10th grade, when she moved to Duluth and attended Denfeld High School, where she graduated.
She worked at Kapus Motors as a bookkeeper and married Ralph on Aug. 23, 1947. In 1952, Martha moved to Silver Bay, as Ralph worked for Hunkin, Arundel and Dixon, the firm that built the former Reserve Mining Company.
Martha and Ralph together built their home on Lax Lake. Martha worked for the North Shore Federal Credit Union, Silver Bay until retiring.
Ralph and Martha wintered in Ft. Meyers, Fla. After Ralph passed, she wintered in Florida with her “Little Buddy,” Bernice Dittmer. When her health deteriorated she moved to Ogilvie, to live and be cared for by her son and daughter-in-law.
She enjoyed knitting, counted cross-stitch, and in her younger years, fishing, hunting and flying airplane as a licensed pilot.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; and grandson, Ernest.
Martha is survived by her son, David (Suzanne), Ogilvie; daughter, Barbara Bruggman of Tucson, Ariz.; brothers, Carroll (Zona) Sheils, Duluth, James (Kay) Sheils, Two Harbors, and Kenneth (Rose) Sheils, Grand Marais; grandchildren, Daniel (Rachel) Hedberg, Matthew Hedberg, Amanda Bruggman and Scott Bruggman; great-grandchildren, Athena Hedberg and Kyle Hedberg; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were Nov. 16, 2006, at Faith Lutheran Church, Silver Bay. Memorials preferred to the Lupus Foundation. Burial at Sawtooth Mountain. Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
Roy Jacobson
Roy Jacobson 82, Little Marais, died in his home Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006.
He was born Dec. 17, 1925, in Plummer.
Roy attended grade school in Plummer and graduated from high school in Plummer in 1941. He served in the Merchant Marines in the Atlantic and South Pacific during World War II.
He married Mabel Lindtveit on Oct. 11, 1947.
Roy was employed as a master plumber for Cherne-Sundlund Co. and J.W. Galbreath Co. in Silver Bay and Babbitt. He owned and operated Jacobson Hardware in Silver Bay from 1958-1979. He was an active charter member of Sychar Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his brother Norman; granddaughter Lynea; and his brother-in-law Orlo Lindtveit.
Roy is survived by his wife Mabel; daughter LynNell Bartyn, Camarillo, Calif.; son Lee, Silver Bay; daughter Julie Runnfeldt, Appleton, Wis.; four grandchildren; two nieces, Lisa and Amy; and sister-in-law Audrey Jacobson.
Visitation at Sychar Lutheran Church, Silver Bay, on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 5-7 p.m., and one hour prior to the 10:30 a.m. service on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Sychar Lutheran Church. Burial in Silver Bay Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
Elinor M. Sellman
Elinor M. Sellman, 75, Upsala, passed away Thursday, Nov. 10, 2006, at the St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud.
Elinor was born on Jan. 16, 1931, in Two Harbors to the late Martin and Edith (Youngfeldt) Anderson.
Elinor grew up in Two Harbors and graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1949. After completing her schooling, she worked as an executive secretary for Reserve Mining in Two Harbors. She worked for Shackley Natural Health Beauty Supply as a sales leader for 30 years.
On Jan. 19, 1952, she was united in marriage to Earl Sellman in Two Harbors. The couple lived in there from 1952-59. In 1959, they moved to Roseville. In 1969, they moved to Brooklyn Center and resided there until 1993. They retired to Clearwater in 1993 and lived there until moving to Upsala in 2003. The couple enjoyed spending winters the past 18 years in Tempe, Ariz.
Elinor was a member of Community Covenant Church, Upsala, and Grace Church, Peoria, Ariz. She was an officer with the Eastern Star. Elinor enjoyed reading, cooking, oil painting and was a wonderful listener to her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Edith Anderson.
Elinor is survived by her husband, Earl Sellman, Upsala; son, Todd Sellman (Suzette), Honolulu, Hawaii; daughters, Marcia Weedman (Jeffrey), Tempe, Ariz., Sue Ann Aleckson (Roger), Upsala, and sister, Irene Fjosne, Duluth; grandchildren, Shawn Fehn, Amanda Allen, Jesse Aleckson, Melissa Weedman, Reuben Aleckson, Elizabeth “Liz” Aleckson; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Community Covenant Church, Upsala, with Rev. Craig Johnson officiating. Burial at the parish cemetery.
Mary Jane Kruyer
Mary Jane Kruyer, 84, Two Harbors, died peacefully Tuesday Nov. 14, 2006, at the Sunrise Home, with two of her daughters by her side.
She was born Feb. 25, 1922, to Aza and Leo Mary (Swisher) Brewer in Stilesville, Ind.
Mary Jane grew up and attended schools in Mishawaka, Ind. She was a civilian worker for the United States Department of Defense, retiring as the chief budget officer for the United States Army.
Mary Jane loved art, music, history and traveling--including extensive travel in Europe.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and sister Martha Seegrist.
Mary Jane is survived by her daughters, Paula New and Peggy Kruyer, both of Two Harbors, and Katie Kruyer, Minneapolis; brother, Jack Brewer, Ft. Wayne, Ind.; cousin, Bill (Martha) Brewer; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nine nieces and nephews, and her beloved granddogs, Oliver and Chelsea.
Service was Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006 at Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors.
