ROSE HELEN CLIFFORD
She was born December 3, 1911 in Eveleth, the daughter of Matt and Anna (Vidnich) Rebrovich. She graduated from Eveleth High School, and also attended Jr. College. She was married to Carroll Clifford in March of 1937 in Eveleth.
Rose Helen Clifford, 97, longtime resident of Eveleth and formerly of Long Lake and Virginia, died Sunday, July 26, 2009 in the Diamond Willow Memory Care Facility in Proctor.

She was born December 3, 1911 in Eveleth, the daughter of Matt and Anna (Vidnich) Rebrovich. She graduated from Eveleth High School, and also attended Jr. College. She was married to Carroll Clifford in March of 1937 in Eveleth.

Rose worked as a wife and mother, and was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carroll; her brother, Matt Rebro; and two sisters, Mary Cvek and Katheryn Rebrovich. Rose is survived by her son, Dr. Thomas (Gail) Clifford of Silver Bay; her daughter, Kathryn Clifford of Shakopee, Minn.; 8 grandchildren, Thomas Greg Clifford, Stephanie Martin, Julie Jonson, Lisa Clifford, Thomas Emond, Dr. Mary Emond, Dr. Margaret Kierkegaard and Kathleen Emond; and 14 great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 2009, until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Interment will be at the Eveleth Cemetery. Memorials are preferred. Family services are provided by Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home, in Virginia.

SANDRA JEAN McCORMICK
She was born September 1, 1934 to Roland and Dorothy (Teske) Williams in Shorewood, Wisconsin. As a small child she moved to Dallas, later to Detroit where she graduated from high school. She attended and graduated Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin. She married J. Howard McCormick on April 20, 1957. She was employed as a librarian at Racine, Wisconsin, Colorado State University and Cortland, New York. In 1967 she moved with her husband to Duluth.
Sandra J. McCormick, 74, Duluth, Minnesota died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at the Bayshore Health Center.

She was a founding member and librarian of the Duluth Needle Arts Guild. She was a member of French River Lutheran Church. She enjoyed needle work, reading, and traveling. She especially enjoyed knitting for charity drives for those with cold fingers and heads.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sons Kevin and Howard Charles.

Sandra is survived by her husband J. Howard, son Cameron (Ursula) of Spokane, Washington, sister and brother Penelope Rush of Casper, WY and John Roland Williams of Waukesha, WI grandchildren Madivie, Karen, and Akourakali, and nephews Andy, Bennett, Chad, Drew, and Matthew.

Visitation: Noon until the 1 PM service on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at French River Lutheran Church. Memorials will be sent to the Mayo Clinic for cancer research. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery Palmers, Duluth Township.

STELLA MINNIE SORBO
She was born September 14, 1930 in Alden (Freeborn County), Minnesota to Haakon and Alma (Thompson) Hanson. She attended District #16 rural school through the sixth grade, graduated from Freeborn High School in 1948, and attended Mankato State Teachers College for two years.

Stella M. Sorbo, 78, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the Solvay Hospice House.

She was born September 14, 1930 in Alden (Freeborn County), Minnesota to Haakon and Alma (Thompson) Hanson. She attended District #16 rural school through the sixth grade, graduated from Freeborn High School in 1948, and attended Mankato State Teachers College for two years. She taught elementary school in Bricelyn, MN for two years and in Omaha, NE for one year. She married Glen G. Sorbo June 13, 1953 and they made their home in Two Harbors. After earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in elementary education from the University of Minnesota, Duluth she worked as a substitute elementary teacher for Lake Superior School District. She also taught creative writing for children through Community Education, was a local news correspondent for the Duluth News Tribune, was a writer and columnist for the Lake County News Chronicle, and was a free-lance writer for a variety of educational, nostalgia, and Christian magazines.

Stella served as a past president of the Minnehaha PTA, and was a historian and publicist for various groups including Women’s Aglow. She enjoyed reading, embroidery, time with her family, and attending Bible Studies. She accepted the Lord as her Savior in 1955. She was a member of Living Waters Fellowship and the Friends of the Two Harbors Library. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glen, brothers, George, Elmer, Dean and Haakon Jr., and a sister Hulda Hanson.

Stella is survived by her five daughters - Gwen Sorbo of Duluth, Dawn (Kevin) Aune of Two Harbors, Faith (Gene) Ettestad of Maple Grove, Debra (Eugene) von Taube of Wellesley, MA, and Elaine (Kurt) Marple of Buffalo, MN; a brother, Harold (Delores) Hanson of Long Lake, MN,; sisters, Helen Larson of Austin, MN, and Anna (Meritt) Henry of Chaska, MN; sister-in-law, Pauline Hanson; eight grandchildren and a new-great-granddaughter..

Visitation: 3-5 PM Sunday at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors and from 10 AM until the 11 AM service on Monday, July 6, 2009 at the Living Waters Fellowship in Two Harbors. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery.

DALE LeROY BANKS
He was born near Charles City, Iowa on November 25, 1922, to Edward and Elsie (White) Banks and grew up and attended schools in Floyd County and Charles City. He married Carol Jean Janssen on May 21, 1943 and had two children Bonnie Tikkanen and Ronald Banks.
Dale L. Banks 86, Finland, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2009.

He was born near Charles City, Iowa on November 25, 1922, to Edward and Elsie (White) Banks and grew up and attended schools in Floyd County and Charles City. He married Carol Jean Janssen on May 21, 1943 and had two children Bonnie Tikkanen and Ronald Banks. After returning from WW II, he was employed as a mechanic at Buick garage until 1952, when he moved his family to Minneapolis and was foreman at Unipress. From 1958 to 1973 Dale and Carol operated Banks Store and Cabins and learned to love the little community with a big heart, but roaming fever hit again and they moved to Gully, MN and operated the Gully Liquor Store from 1974-1978. They later lived in Houston, TX and Berthoud, CO and finally came back their favorite place to build their dream home on Little Marais Road, overlooking Lake Superior. Dale loved traveling and took his family to every state west of the Mississippi River plus others. Hunting and fishing were a great passion in his younger years. e alsoH He also loved working with his hands and with wood and created many heirlooms for his family. He had a good work ethic and never quit until a project was completed. He lived life to its fullest.

Dale is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Carol, mother and father-in-law Albert and Constance Janssen, brothers and sisters-in-law Barney and Edna Banks, Bill and Bette Banks, Wes and Bonnie Banks, sister Gladys Corrier, sister-in-law Doris Banks, brother-in-law Dale Krumrey, and granddaughter Jamie Tikkanen.

Dale is survived by his sisters Viola Krumrey of Charles City, Iowa and Mildred Hess, Warren, MN, sister and brother-in-law Helen and Jack Kirchberg, of Pine City, MN, brother and sister-in-law Larry (Donna) Janssen of Cambridge, MN, daughter Bonnie (Wally) Tikkanen of Finland, son Ronald (Jean) Banks of Columbia, TN, granddaughters LouAnn (Dave Thompson) of Knife River, Deedra (Russell) Carroll of Spring Hill, TN, grandson Jeff (Shelly) Tikannen of Finland, great-grandsons Jeremy (Arlene) Tikkanen of Finland, Cameron and Carson Carroll, Spring Hill, TN, two step-great-grandsons Dakota and Skylar Thompson of Knife River, great-great-grandsons Sully and Hunter Tikkanen of Finland and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service: 11 AM, Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Finland. Burial will be at Crystal Bay Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

MARY JANE ELANDER
urvived by her husband of 57 years, Jay Elander; daughters: Jan (Gregg) Erickson and Deb (John Kephart) Roesler; brothers: Bob (Mary) Ogren, and Dick (Elaine) Ogren; and many other relatives and friends.
Mary Jane (Ogren) Elander passed away peacefully on July 3, 2009, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Survived by her husband of 57 years, Jay Elander; daughters: Jan (Gregg) Erickson and Deb (John Kephart) Roesler; brothers: Bob (Mary) Ogren, and Dick (Elaine) Ogren; and many other relatives and friends.

She was a loving, courageous and caring person who will be missed greatly by all whose lives she touched. Her spirit will be with us forever.

MEMORIAL SERVICE in celebration of her life at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, in Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 715 Minnetonka Mills Rd., Hopkins, Minn. 55343. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Memorials preferred to Gethsemane Lutheran Church Memorial Foundation or Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota.

PAULETTE M. SUIHKONEN
She was born June 18, 1949, in Mora, Minn. to Ray and Mildred (Gustafson) Juenemann and lived there until the family moved to Two Harbors where Paulette attended school, graduating in 1967.
Paulette M. Suihkonen, 60, of Embarrass, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family and special friends on July 1, 2009, after a lengthy illness.

She was born June 18, 1949, in Mora, Minn. to Ray and Mildred (Gustafson) Juenemann and lived there until the family moved to Two Harbors where Paulette attended school, graduating in 1967.

She married James Suihkonen on August 18, 1967, and they moved to Babbitt and later to Embarrass.

Paulette was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Babbitt and was a homemaker.

Paulette is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, James; son, Chad (Della) Suihkonen; daughter, Janelle (Eric) Wilhelm; grandchildren, Tyler and Saraphina Wilhelm; sister, Lucille Berndt; sister-in-law and best friend, June Juenemann; sisters-in-law, Irene Ronning and Catherine Moore and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Don and Bud; sister Evelyn Wellnitz; brother-in-law, Robert Wellnitz; brother-in-law, Harold Berndt and sister-in-law, Ruth Juenemann.

The family would like to express their appreciation to everyone for their care and support.

MEMORIAL SERVICE at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 10 Central Blvd., Babbitt with Pastor John C. Bonk officiating. Internment at the Embarrass Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

EDITH "PETE" CARLSON
Edith "Pete" Carlson, 90, of Two Harbors went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 1.

She was born on Dec. 1, 1918 to Gust and Bertha Carlson in Two Harbors where she grew up and graduated with the Two Harbors High School Class of 1937.

Edith worked at the Norwest Bank, now Wells Fargo, for 20 years in the bookkeeping department. She was a member of the United Church.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sister-in-law Ethel Carlson and nieces Betsy, Lori, Sue, Jill, Wendy and nephews Steve, Scott, Kenny, Doug and Bill.

Edith was deeply loved and an inspiration to all that knew her.

A memorial service will be held for at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 10, at the United Church. Lunch will be served.

Marilyn Ann Kritz
Marilyn Ann Kritz, 67, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm. The Rev. Steve Daigle will be celebrant. A private inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to the North Star Hospice. Arrangements are by Anderson-Daniels, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Hibbing.

Marilyn Ann Kritz, 67, of Chisholm, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in her home with her family by her side.

She was born April 23, 1933, in Grand Rapids, to Charles Martin and Marion (Wourms) Staley. She married John G. Kritz on July 7, 1951, in Grand Rapids. She was employed by the Chisholm Hospital and the Range Center, and was a “Volunteer Grandma” for the Vaughn Steffensrud Elementary School in Chisholm. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, was a former officer in the PTA, and a former member of the Mrs. Jaycees.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, John G. Kritz; two daughters, Gloria (Ed Williams) Kritz of Mountain Iron, and Linda (Rick) Morse of Buhl; four sons, John (Maria) Kritz of Hibbing, Kevin (Becky) Kritz of Burnsville, Minn., David (Susan) Kritz of Hibbing, and Brian (Amy) Kritz of Suffolk, Va.; a sister, Mary Lou (Jack) Andrews of Coleraine; three brothers, Martin (Jan) Staley of Salt Lake City, Utah, Philip (Joyce) Staley of St. Croix Falls, Wis., and Alan (Marie) Staley of Willmar, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Joyce E. Gaylord
Joyce E. Gaylord, 71, SERVICES: Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Range Funeral Home in Hibbing. The Rev. Lyle Rossing will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Joyce E. Gaylord, 71, of Hibbing, died Sept. 29, 2000, at her home.

She was born Oct. 7, 1928, to Elmer and Alice (Jacobson) Eastman in North Hibbing. She grew up in Hibbing and graduated from Hibbing High School. On Aug. 2, 1947, she married Lynn Duane Gaylord in Hibbing. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary No. 8510 of Hibbing.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Lynn; two daughters, Sharon (James) Vukad of Chisholm, Sindy (Thomas) Ralidak of Hibbing; four grandchildren, Kelly and James Ryan Vukad, and Lee and Sheena Ralidak; sister, Arlene (Lloyd) Lindstrom of Beaumont, Texas; and many other dear friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Cheryle; and a son, Duane.

Emil A. Ojala
Emil A. Ojala, 76, SERVICES: Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday in First Lutheran Church of Ely. The Rev. John Bonk will officiate. Arrangements are by Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.

Emil Alfred Ojala, 76, of Ely died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1923, in Ely to August and Johanna (Putikka) Ojala. He graduated in 1942 from Ely Memorial High School. He served in the Army from 1949 to 1952. He married Dorothy Saari of Ely in 1950. He worked at Reserve Mining Co. for 31 years, retiring in 1985.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Dorothy; daughters, Martha Mays of El Paso, Texas, and Catherine (Larry) Sampson of Esko, Minn.; sons, Mark of Hollywood, Fla., Leslie of Holt, Mich., and Daniel (Katherine) Ojala of Ely; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Tyne (Guare) and Lillian; and brothers, Victor, Eino and Arthur.

Harry C. Lear
Harry C. Lear, 87, SERVICES: A private funeral service and memorial service will be announced. Memorials to Hospice of St. Paul, the American Cancer Society, or the donor’s choice will be appreciated. The hospice care was heavenly.

Harry C. Lear, 87, of White Bear Lake, Minn., was formerly of Virginia and Duluth.

He attended the University of Minnesota School of Forestry, and was a registered civil engineer. He was with the former Northern Pacific Railroad and the Canadian National Railroad as engineer and manager of the DWP branch. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Margaret; daughters, Kathryn Harper, Margaret (Paul) Schubert and Joyce Fortier; son, William (Vicki); grandsons, Russell, Brian, Christopher, Andrew, William and Peter; and granddaughters, Nancy (Reo) and Anissa.

Vladimir J. Beatovich
Vladimir J. Beatovich, 76, SERVICES: Burial was held on Saturday by Bonnie Watson at Washington Memorial Chapel and Park in Seattle, Wash.

Vladimer J. Beatovich, 76, died on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at the Highland Nursing Center in Renton, Wash.

He was born on June 19, 1924, in Kinney to Jole and Angela Beatovich. He was a 45-year safe driver with Consolidated Freightways.

Survivors include sons, Bill (Colleen) of Yorktown, Va., and Gary (Tracey) of Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.; grandchildren, J.W., GraceAnne, Curtis and Sarah; sisters, Helen (Gordon) Beam of Seattle, Wash., Mary (Michael) Zakula of Buhl, Mili (Jim) Hill of San Clemente, Calif., and Veda (Don) Sirek of New Prague, Minn.; brothers, Eli Knezovich of Tuscon, Ariz., Milan (Zora) Knezovich of Woodhaven, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, in 1998; his parents; his stepfather, Drago Knezovich; and a brother, William, a casualty of World War II.
