Frances M. Wedge, 80, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keewatin. The Rev. Ron Gagne will be celebrant. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Saturday. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Jason Wedge, Aaron Wedge, Erik Wedge, Holly Lundgren, Hope Wedge, and Leah Wedge. Arrangements are by the Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing.

Frances M. Wedge, 80, of Virginia, formerly of Keewatin, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 3, 1920, in Hibbing, to Andrew and Magdalena Skalsky. She raised her family in Keewatin, where she was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and had worked as a nurses aide/therapist in the Hibbing General Hospital’s Respiratory and Physical Therapy departments. She and her husband moved to Virginia in 1994.

She is survived by her husband, Woodrow; two sons, Jerry (Loretta) Wedge of Virginia, and Nick (Sarah) Wedge of Nashwauk; a sister, Helen Stark of Bemidji, Minn.; three brothers, Walter Skalsky of Silver Bay, Minn., Eugene (Kathy) Skalski of Hibbing, and John (Ardelle) Skalsky of Iron; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Kuryatnik and Stella Calliguri.

Rose Marie Jerome Turner
Rose Marie Jerome Turner, 90, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Walton Funeral Home in Reno, Nev. Cremation will be at Sierra Crematory, with inurnment at Mountain View Cemetery. A memorial is being established with Children’s Cabinet, 1090 S. Rock Blvd., Reno, NV 89502.

Rose Marie Jerome Turner, 90, of Reno, Nev., formerly of Eveleth, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

A native of Eveleth, she was born on Feb. 6, 1910, to Dominic and Rose (Bombich) Jerome and had lived in Reno for the past 35 years, coming from Montana. She was an English and French teacher in Minnesota, Montana and at Earl Wooster High School in Reno. She was selected by the University of Montana to be on a 12-member board to revise the English curriculum for the state of Montana. She was a member of the Catholic Church, and graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota in English and French.

Survivors include her husband, Howard, of Reno; brothers, Dominic of Arizona and Tony of Ohio; sisters, Julie and Josephine, both of Minnesota, and Christine of California; and several nieces and nephews.

Lottie D. Kramer
Lottie D. Kramer, 93, SERVICES: Funeral at 1 p.m. Sunday at Kerntz Funeral Chapel in Ely, with visitation from noon to the time of service. Interment in Elmwood Park Cemetery in Elmwood Park, Ill., on Tuesday. Local arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

Lottie D. Kramer, 93, of Babbitt, formerly of Joliet, Ill., died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in the Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital.

She was born June 19, 1907, in Chicago to Frank and Anna Gaura. She owned and operated EK Motor Service in Joliet and for the past 10 years had been a resident of Babbitt.

Survivors include her daughter, Anna Mae Basarich, of Berkeley, Ill.; three grandsons, Terrence, Joseph and Robert Basarich; three great-grandchildren, Robbie, Stacy and Samantha Basarich; a great-great-grandson, Kal Basarich; and a brother, Joseph Ilcewicz, of Crest Hill, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward, in April 1975; and five brothers.

Agnes Victoria Wickstrom Petersen
Agnes Victoria Wickstrom Petersen, 85, SERVICES: Funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia. The Rev. Kristin Foster will officiate. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home in Virginia and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Interment in Elim Lutheran Cemetery in Blackhoof, Minn. The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Messiah Lutheran Church Building Fund. Family services provided by Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia.

Agnes Victoria Wickstrom Petersen, 85, longtime resident of Parkville, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 17, 1914, in Superior, Wis., the daughter of Andrew and Hilda (Olsson) Wickstrom. Her family moved to Blackhoof, Minn., when she was a child, and it was in Blackhoof where she attended school and on Aug. 26, 1944, married Carl Edward Petersen. She and Carl moved to Parkville in 1948 and founded Petersen Drilling Inc.

Agnes was a housewife and homemaker and was retired from Cluett-Peabody in Virginia. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron, the Messiah Women Quilters and the Parkville Community Club and Birthday Club.

She is survived by four children, Norville (Wanda) Petersen of Virginia, Shirley (Conrad) Chipman of Phoenix, Ariz., Martin (Linda) Petersen of Vernon, Conn., and Dennis (Roxanne Matschiner) Petersen of Mountain Iron; two sisters, Minda Tuve of Carlton and Mrs. Vernon (Hilma) Miller of Barnum, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Todd (Sarah) Petersen, Laurie Rothe, Mindy (Nathan) Bonden, Anna Chipman, Gail Petersen, Matthew Petersen, Brian Petersen, Bill Matschiner and Dawn Matschiner; one great-grandson, Austin Brohman; and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl, in 1984; three sisters, Helen Lawrence, Anna Thompson and Ida Patterson; a brother, Alvin Wickstrom; and a granddaughter, Wendy Nix.

Visitation from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Inurnment in the Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm.

Neil J. Waisanen, 85, of Chisholm, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.

He was born May 29, 1915, in Kajaani, Finland, to Jaakko and Sofia Waisanen. They came to America in 1923. He was a graduate of Chisholm High School and a lifelong resident. He had worked as a mechanic for the Ford garage, a heavy equipment operator for several mining companies and as an operating engineer with Virginia Local 49. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Chisholm.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha; his children, Roger (Beatrice) of Cook, Marcia (Robert) Boutang of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Gerald (Wendy) of Side Lake; one brother, Aaro A. Waisanen, of Chisholm; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elaine Modlin; and three grandchildren.

Joyce (Newberg) Van Oudenhoven
Joyce (Newberg) Van Oudenhoven, 57, SERVICES: Funeral at 7 p.m. Monday at the Wichmann Funeral Home in Appleton, Wis., with the Rev. Jennifer DeNetz officiating. Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. Monday to the time of service.

Joyce (Newberg) Van Oudenhoven, 57, of Appleton, Wis., died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, of a rare arterial disease referred to as Moyamoya Disease.

She was born July 2, 1943, to the late C. Walter and Ethel E. (Valley) Newberg in Eveleth. She married Milo Van Oudenhoven on July 17, 1965. She took great pride in her family. She enjoyed and supported her son’s racing and also enjoyed crocheting, cooking and working on crafts.

She is survived by her husband, Milo, of Appleton; a daughter, Kay (Mark) Ashauer, of Kaukauna, Wis.; a son, Jeff (Dawn) Van Oudenhoven of Kimberly, Wis.; two brothers, Marvin (Janice) Newberg of Forbes and Delbert Newberg of Big Falls, Minn.; very special friends, Sue (Tom) Steffen; a sister-in-law, Beverly (Wade) Leuthold; and brothers-in-law, Wallace (Loretta) Hersant and Robert (Betty) Bessette. Joyce will also be greatly missed by many friends, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, a niece and a nephew.

Taimi I. Panula
Taimi I. Panula, 76, SERVICES: Funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Cheryl A. Berg will officiate. Visitation will be for one hour before service. Burial in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.

Taimi I. Panula, 76, of Virginia, formerly of Hibbing, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Kinney to Konsta and Hilja (Korpela) Joki. She grew up and attended school in Keewatin and graduated from Keewatin High School. On Nov. 13, 1943, she married Roy E. Panula in Keewatin. Following marriage they made their home in Hibbing. She had been a homemaker. In 1991 she moved to Virginia. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hibbing.

She is survived by three sons, Ray A. Panula of Mountain Iron, Kenneth R. “Butch’’ (Sharon) Panula of Britt and Francis John Panula of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; six grandchildren, Heather Panula, Derek Panula, Desirae Panula, Jessica Panula, Michael Panula and Neda Panula; and a great-grandson, Ross LaKosky.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, on Jan. 22, 1993, and her parents.

Clifford H. Trygg
Clifford H. Trygg, 77, SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Mlaker Funeral Home of Cook. The Rev. Kenneth Tamte will be the officiant. A gathering of family and friends will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in the Cook Community Cemetery.

Clifford H. Trygg, 77, of Angora died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 5, 1923, at the family homestead in Field Township, the son of Hjalmer and Bertha (Carlson) Trygg. He was united in marriage to Lois A. Wattunen in Virginia on June 14, 1946. Earlier in their marriage, he had farmed and was a self-employed logger. He was a lifelong resident of the Cook area, and he and his wife had spent winters in Florida for 20 years. He was a millwright and worked on the construction of several mining companies on the Iron Range. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Cook, Virginia Masonic Lodge 264, Scottish Rite of Hibbing, Loyal Order of the Moose No. 226 of Chisholm, and Millwright’s Local 1348. He had enjoyed working in the woods, gardening and four-wheeling. He had not been in good health for the past three years.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Lois; one son, Timothy (Roxanne) Trygg, of Angora; two daughters, Karen McCue of Eveleth and Harriet (John) Martinez of Fort Collins, Colo.; four grandchildren, Fred (Melissa) McCue, Tedd McCue, Scott (Angela) Trygg and Tracy (Brad) Luecken; two great-grandchildren, Clint McCue and Jasmine Trygg; three stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Esther Bowe and Alice Obidowski; and son-in-law, Tom McCue, on July 28, 2000.

Karen Sue Kinnunen
Karen Sue Kinnunen, 64, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church in Embarrass. The Rev. Marlon Bjornrud will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Embarrass Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Range Funeral Home of Virginia.

Karen Sue Kinnunen, 64, of Embarrass died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at the Arrowhead Health Care Center in Virginia.

She was born on Oct. 30, 1935, in Ely. She grew up and attended school in Ely. On Sept. 17, 1952, she was united in marriage to Harlan Kinnunen in Ely. She had been a homemaker. She was a member of the Embarrass Lutheran Church, where she had been a pianist for many years. She enjoyed music, especially writing music and playing the guitar and piano.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Harlan; two daughters, Laurie (Steve) Rasmussen of Babbitt and Kathy (Mike) Hannay of Virginia; two sons, Gerald Kinnunen of Embarrass and Dale (Glory Ann) Kinnunen of Embarrass; 10 grandchildren, Blaine Johnson of Embarrass, Ryan Johnson of Virginia, Michelle (Lathan) Houghton of Slater, Iowa, Alan Kinnunen of Embarrass, Paul Rasmussen of Babbitt, Jessica Kinnunen of Zim, Matthew Kinnunen of Embarrass, Evan Kinnunen of Babbitt and Dilon and Briita Kinnunen, both of Embarrass.

Josephine Mayer Nichols
Josephine Mayer Nichols, 69, SERVICES: Funeral services were held in Littleton, Colo.

Josephine Mayer Nichols, 69, of Littleton, Colo., died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Colo.

She was born on Dec. 4, 1930, in Duluth to the late Joseph and Ella Mayer.

Survivors include her husband, Tom, of Littleton; three sons, Kevin Nichols of Littleton, Tim (Vach) Nichols of Castle Rock, Colo., and Kerry (Kim Donaldson) of California, Mo.; two grandchildren; two brothers, Milt (Barb) Mayer of Gilbert and Joesph Mayer Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; and four sisters, Audrey Woods of Plano, Texas, Laverne Mayer of Virginia, Marlene (Wayne) Goad of Rochester, N.Y., and Vi Mayer of Charlottesville, Va.

Evelyn Taylor
Evelyn Taylor, 76, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Embarrass-Pike Evangelical Lutheran Church in Embarrass. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, Iowa, from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in the Waasa Township Cemetery near Embarrass. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Grinnell, Iowa, to Grinnell Regional Hospice, or to the Embarrass-Pike Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Evelyn Taylor, 76, of Grinnell, Iowa, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at her home of cancer.

She was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Michigan, N.D., to Edward and Sadie Minette. In 1924, the family moved to Staples, Minn., and they moved to Fertile, Minn., in 1933, where she received her education. In 1942, she married Norman E. Dale in Rindahl, Minn., and the couple made their home in Fertile and Babbitt, before moving to Embarrass. While living in Embarrass, she worked as a seamstress for Arrow Shirt Co., and later worked as a cook at the Four Corners Restaurant. Following the death of her husband, Norman, in 1987, she began spending her winters in Edinburgh, Texas. She met Harry Taylor in Edinburgh, and they married in 1992 in Embarrass. After their marriage, the couple lived in Grinnell, Iowa. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Embarrass and served as chaplain for the Eastern Star in Tower, and was involved in the Senior Legion of the Women of the Moose.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Taylor, of Grinnell, Iowa; seven sons, Norman (Wanda) Dale Jr. of Aurora, Robert Dale and Rodney (Christina) Dale, both of Embarrass, Gary (Kathleen) Dale, and Ronald (Linda) Dale, both of Warroad, Minn., Craig (Candace) Dale of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Wayne (Katrina) Dale of Babbitt; two daughters, Gwen (Craig) Keskitalo, and Tammie Waisanen, both of Embarrass; 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marcella Vandervort, of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her first husband; her parents; one sister; two grandchildren.

Bernice A. (Buchwitz) Bandow
Bernice A. (Buchwitz) Bandow, 74, SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth. The Rev. Eric Lemonholm will officiate. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth.

Bernice A. (Buchwitz) Bandow, 74, of Eveleth, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 22, 1926, in Grove Lake, Minn., to William and Minnie (Miller) Buchwitz. She married LaVerne Bandow on June 8, 1969, in Milaca, Minn. They lived in Milaca for many years, moving to the Iron Range in 1980. She had worked as a waitress at the Leamington Hotel in Minneapolis and was a homemaker. She was a former member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hibbing.

She is survived by her children, Patrica (Dennis) Daugaard of Montgomery, Minn., Donna (James) Zaiser of Valley Center, Calif., James (Barbara) Allegrezza, Terry Anderson and Betty Allegrezza, all of Eveleth; her grandchildren, Michael Daugaard, William “Billy” Zaiser, LeAnne Zaiser, Michelle Allegrezza, Anthony Allegrezza, Jerome Allegrezza and Daniel Anderson; great-grandchildren, Zacharias and Noah Allegrezza; brothers, Dale (Barbara) Buchwitz and William (Sandy) Buchwitz Jr., both of Hibbing; sisters, Helen Bradley of Florida and Arlene Whitlock of Hibbing; numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, LaVerne, on Feb. 28, 2000; brothers, Norman, Gordon, Harold, John, Albert and Maynard Buchwitz; her parents.

Delberne G. “Stub” Engelstad
Delberne G. “Stub” Engelstad, 66, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Community United Church of Christ in Biwabik. The Rev. Jim Faunce-Zimmerman will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik.

Delberne G. “Stub” Engelstad, 66, of Biwabik died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at his home.

He was born April 11, 1934, in Warren, Minn., to Bernard and Pearl (Olbekson) Engelstad. He graduated from the Warren High School. On July 16, 1954, he married Ardelle Scheuring in Milbank, S.D. They moved to the Iron Range in 1954, and he began his career with Evtac in 1968. He retired from Evtac in 1998, after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Community Church in Biwabik.

He is survived by his wife, Ardelle; son, Scott, of Gilbert; daughter, Rhonda (John) Mahovlich, of Gilbert; brothers, William of Hibbing, Charles of Warren, Minn., Leland of Biwabik, Conrad of Hibbing; sister, Mae Grega, of Warren, Minn.; grandchildren, Tim Cunningham, Ryan and Tia Engelstad.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Randy; brothers, Selmer and Russel.
