Violet G. Plantz, 84, SERVICES: Private family services will be held in Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely. Spring burial will be in the Ely Cemetery.

Violet G. Plantz, 84, of Ely died Monday April 2, 2001, in her home.

She was born Sept. 15, 1916, in Chicago to Edward and Julia (Semro) Dobersch. While living there, she worked as a supervisor for Rand-McNally Publishing Co. In 1942, she married Raymond A. Plantz in Washington, D.C.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond; a son, Raymond (Jayne) Plantz, of Ely; a daughter, Pamela (Terry) Murphy, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Lorraine Deering, of Chicago; a brother, James (Delores) Dobersch, of Warsaw, Ind.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Dolores Reilly.

Ann Romitelli
Ann Romitelli, 88, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia. The Rev. John O’Donnell will be celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Ann Romitelli, 88, of Virginia, formerly of rural Eveleth, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

She was born March 7, 1913, in Eveleth to Vincent and Josephine (Fassola) Menghini, and had been a lifelong resident of rural Eveleth. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Virginia.

She is survived by one sister, Louise Maki (Leonard) Cogger, of Virginia; one nephew, Richard (Mary Jean) Olson, of Neenah, Wis.; one niece, Mary Lou (Larry) Welt, of Cannon Falls, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nazzareno Romitelli; two sisters, Inez Franklin, and Alice Alexander.

Louise U. Herring
Louise U. Herring, 80, SERVICES: A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. April 21 at the Vermilion Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service. The Rev. Daniel Clemons will officiate. Inurnment will follow in the Vermilion Lake Cemetery. Arrangements are by Bauman Vermilion, a Bauman Family Funeral Home, in Tower. Louise U. Herring, 80, of Tower, formerly of Chicago, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Virginia Convalescent Center in Virginia.

She was born Aug. 10, 1920, in Muskogee, Okla., to John and Otillia (Christ) Ultrich. She married Jewell Herring on Oct. 16, 1942, in Hemple, Mo. She graduated from high school and followed with two years of college in Germany. She was a cook at the Tower Cafe and Hearthside Homes of Tower and the Johnson Nursing Home in Biwabik. She was a board member at the Embarrass Vermilion Credit Union, a member of the Vermilion Neighborly Women’s Club, and the Range Fiber Arts Guild. She loved to do rag rug weaving, quilting, wood carving and knitting.

She is survived by five sons, John (Diana) Herring of Ocala, Fla., Joseph (Judy) Herring of Minnetonka, Minn., Paul (Annette) Herring of Tower, Richard (Debra) Herring of Iron and Jewell (Mary) Herring of Babbitt; one daughter, Sarah (Kevin) Lovgren, of New Brighton, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Lonnie, Michael, Daniel (Becky), Timothy, Barbara, Katherine, Lindsey Herring, Tracie (Mike) Russell, Laura Lovgren and Robert Lovgren; two great-grandchildren, Kelsey Lynn Russell and John Daniel Herring.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jewell, on Jan. 28, 2000.

Nancy E. Riddle Henderson
Nancy E. Riddle Henderson, 71, SERVICES: Private graveside services are planned. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. on Friday, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at the Range Funeral Home in Hoyt Lakes. The Rev. John C. Bonk will officiate. Burial will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery.

Nancy E. Riddle Henderson, 71, of Hoyt Lakes, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the White Community Hospital in Aurora.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1929, to Louis and Cloy (Calhoun) Ripley in Sheboygan, Wis. She was raised by Dennis and Golda (Calhoun) Waddell in rural LaFarge, Wis. She attended school there, graduating from LaFarge High School. She furthered her education at the Vernon County Normal Teachers College in Viroqua, Wis. She had taught in the Wisconsin County School System. On Nov. 26, 1947, she was united in marriage to J.L. Riddle. In 1957, they made their home in Hoyt Lakes. She had been a Tupperware saleslady/manager for 20 years. She had been a mentor and inspiration to many.

Survivors include three sons, Alan (Kathy) Riddle of Hermantown, Bruce (Joan) Riddle of Hoyt Lakes and David Riddle of Eveleth; four grandchildren, Angela (Joseph) Radzak, Dan (Cheryl) Riddle, Steve (Joy) Riddle and Justin (Omega Hoffman) Riddle; seven great-grandchildren, Emma, Josh, Marissa, Ryan, Miranda, Brennon and Grace; husband, Larry Henderson, of Eveleth; two sisters, Janet (Robert) Kroff of Virginia Beach, Va., and Hullene Fogo of Wonewoc, Wis.; a brother, John Ripley; special friends, Esther Peterson and Dorothy Beasley; and her cats and constant companions, Buttons and Rambo.

She was preceded in death by her birth parents; the parents who raised her; a brother, Robert; a sister, Beverly; and her first husband, Junior Lee Riddle.

Richard “Dick” E. Gallup
Richard “Dick” E. Gallup, 81, SERVICES: Services were held at Brookings Chapel in Brookings, Ore. Burial will be in Madras, Ore. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1-800-272-3900, or on-line at www.alz.org.

Richard “Dick” E. Gallup, 81, of Brookings, Ore., died on Thursday, March 29, 2001, from complications caused by a recent stroke.

He was born on Sept. 7, 1919, in Grantsburg, Wis. He grew up and graduated from high school in Eveleth. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps when he was 20. He trained at Chanute Field in Rantoul, Ill., and was stationed at Hammer Field in Fresno, Calif., when he met his future wife, the former Claire Damiani. He was fighting the North African Campaign of World War II when his first son was born. He received a medical discharge as a disabled veteran, and his disability required a lobe of lung to be removed in the late 1940s, the first operation of its kind to be performed in a California Veterans hospital. While raising his family and living in Fresno through the early 1980s, he worked as a bus driver, bus mechanic, learned the insurance business, and retired with Argonaut Insurance in 1975. His speciality at Argonaut was workman’s compensation claims, and he was respected in the industry for his acquired medical knowledge. During his years with Argonaut, he was an active member and past president of the Fresno Chapter of the Honorable Order of the Blue Goose, a fraternal organization of men and women who work in the property/casualty insurance industry. He was president of the Central California Adjusters Association in 1965, and chairman of the Arbitration Committee of Fresno in 1966. In the mid 1970s, his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and they moved to Madras, Ore. She eventually required 24-hour care and entered a local home in Madras until her passing. He moved to Brookings in the late 1980s. It was during the Eveleth Centennial Celebration in 1992 that he renewed his relationship with his high school sweetheart, Eleanor Hauser. They have spent the last nine years living in Brookings. He had been in the care of the Curry Good Samaritan Center in Brookings since his stroke, and had formerly been living at the Sea Bird RV Park in Brookings. He was a loving and caring companion, husband, father, uncle, and brother.

Survivors include Ellie Hauser and cat, Missy, of Brookings; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jane of Costa Mesa, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Sue of Eugene, Ore.; sister, Doris Rommel of Seattle, Wash.; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Melvin Mitchell of Estacada, Ore.; and brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Nancy of Maple Grove, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Claire, in April 1984.

Impi M. Arvola
Impi M. Arvola, 91, SERVICES: Funeral 2 p.m. Friday at Assembly of God Church in Babbitt, with the Rev. Ben Morgan officiating. Visitation 6-8 p.m. today at Range Funeral Home in Virginia and continues one hour prior to service at the church Friday. Burial will be in Waasa Cemetery in Embarrass.

Impi M. Arvola, 91, of Embarrass died Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Golden Crest Nursing Home in Hibbing.

She was born Sept. 29, 1909, to August and Katherine (Ketola) Maki in Stateline, N.H. She grew up in Embarrass and attended School No. 75. She married Matt Arvola in Ely in 1930. They made their home in Ely and Brocket, N.D., where they farmed until his death in 1943. She then returned to Embarrass and resided there until her children were grown. She moved to Duluth, where she worked for St. Mary’s Hospital and Avionics, both of Duluth, for several years. She retired to Embarrass. She was a very generous, hospitable, loving and gentle person. She cherished her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She made all of her friends feel welcome and always had room for one more.

Survivors include one son, Duane (Elsie) Arvola, of Virginia; two daughters, Pat (Dennis) Sundeen of Cook and Betty Lambert of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Arvola, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Matt, in 1943; a daughter, Kathleen Alto, in 1980; a son, Archie, in 1997; five sisters, three brothers and her parents.

Arthur J. Durand
Arthur J. Durand, 85, SERVICES: Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. today at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Aurora. The Rev. Joseph Sirba will be the celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Full military honors will be accorded by the Aurora American Legion Post 241, and the Hoyt Lakes VFW Post 4188. Inurnment in Wakefield, Mich., will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Fred Bagley, 316 Elmwood, Hoyt Lakes, 55750. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.

Arthur J. Durand, 85, of Hoyt Lakes, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born on Dec. 1, 1915, in Diorite, Mich., to Dan and Olive (Rochon) Durand. He attended high school in Wakefield, Mich. He was a World War II Veteran, serving with the Army in the European Theater of Operations. He worked for Erie Mining, retiring in the early 1980s. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Hoyt Lakes, the Hoyt Lakes VFW Post 4188, and the Aurora American Legion Post 241, where he was past post commander.

Survivors include his best friend, Eleanore Ledin of Hoyt Lakes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Anne in 1984, and three brothers.

Morgan A. Wagner
Morgan A. Wagner, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday in Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Hoyt Lakes. The Rev. Joseph Sirba celebrant. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. today with recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m. in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Visitation continues at the church from 8:30 a.m. to the time of service. Burial in Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery.

Morgan A. Wagner, 5 months, of Virginia, died accidentally on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in Hoyt Lakes.

She was born Dec. 20, 2000, in Anoka, Minn., to Robert and Lisa (Erickson) Wagner.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her brother, Jordan; sisters, Taylor and Ashley; grandparents, Dwayne and Rita Erickson of Hoyt Lakes and Joseph and Catherine Wagner of Oakdale, Minn.; great-grandparents, Paul and Bernice Ebnet of Hoyt Lakes and Darrill Erickson of Holyoke, Minn.; nine aunts and uncles, Sheri (Jarrod) Johnson, Scott Erickson, Ken (Sandra) Goenner, Daniel, Timothy, Catherine and Mary Erickson; and numerous great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins.

Morgan was preceded in death by her grandmother, Elsie Erickson.

Edwin R. Isaacson
Edwin R. Isaacson, 92, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Rev. Ruth Gangloff will officiate. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery.

Edwin R. Isaacson, 92, of Hoyt Lakes died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in the White Community Hospital in Aurora.

He was born May 3, 1909, in Gowan, Minn., to William and Amelia (Gustafson) Isaacson. He was a 1928 graduate of Floodwood High School. Later, he worked in Duluth and Carlton for a short time as a grocer. On Aug. 7, 1934, he married Pearl Garland in Floodwood. Later, they moved to Marcell, Minn., where he owned and operated the Marcell Mercantile and worked as postmaster. In the early 1940s, he worked for International Harvester in St. Paul and later as an insurance agent for Northwestern National Insurance Co. In 1948, he began working for Century Motor Freight and worked there until his retirement in 1974. He was a Hoyt Lakes resident since 1980. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hoyt Lakes.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Pearl; daughter, Mary Ellen (Donald) Lealos of Babbitt; son, Brian (Kay) Isaacson of Maple Grove, Minn.; brothers, Jalmer (Dorothy) of Fridley, Minn., and James (Mary Rae) of Hancock, Mich.; sisters, Lillian (Edward) Ingstad of Apple Valley, Helene Ingstad of Anoka, Minn., Martha (Willard) Maki of Esko and Viola (George) Valo of Milaca; grandchildren, Paul Lealos, Michael (Kathy) Lealos, Brian (Elizabeth) Isaacson and Kristi (Steven) Zwach; great-grandchildren, Eric and Aaron Lealos, Dean Isaacson and Tommy Zwach; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Harry, Erwin and Clarence.

Donald E. Broten Sr., 66, of Chisholm, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Fairview University Medical Center-Hibbing.

He was born July 1, 1934, in Minneapolis to Edward O. and Helen (Baltzer) Broten. He was a 1952 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. On Aug. 31, 1953, he married Janet Tornio in Fayetteville, N.C. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Donald was employed by Borchert Ingersoll in Minneapolis until he transferred to Hibbing in 1970. Starting in 1980 he worked overseas with Euclid Co. as a technical consultant. He was past master and life member of Mesaba Lodge 255, A.F. & A.M.; worthy patron of Order of the Eastern Star, Mesaba Chapter 211; venerable master of the Hibbing Lodge of Perfection, editor of The Voyageur, former member of the Range Shrine Marching Patrol and a life member of Cobb-Williams-Nehiba American Legion Post 222 of Hibbing.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Janet; four sons, Donald E. Jr. of Marble, David H. (Paula) of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Dean C. of Bovey and Dale R. (Candy) of Hibbing; daughter, Diane L. (Butch) Blight of Gilbert; sister, Joanne Sinderman of Crosby, Texas; 15 grandchildren, Tania, Kristina, Dawn, Darlene, Donald III, Joe, Amy, Terri, Douglas, Bryan, Greg, Kjirsten, Dyllon, Ashley and Eric; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Phyllis.

Urban Peroceschi
Urban Peroceschi, 79, SERVICES: Funeral at 2 p.m. today in the Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing, with visitation at 1 p.m. Burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Urban Peroceschi, 79, of Hibbing, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at his home.

He was born in St. Paul on July 30, 1921, and had lived in Hibbing most of his life. He was a veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his special friend, Tyne Limmer of Hibbing; two sons, David in Stillwater and Eugene in Alaska; daughter, Lynn Lynch of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Janene, Bradley and Gregg, and many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, June; daughter, Colleen Gregg; and daughter-in-law, Mary Rita.

Ella A. Olson
Ella A. Olson, 82, SERVICES: Cremation will be by the Cremation Society of Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ella A. Olson, 82, of Virginia, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in the Virginia Convalescent Center. She was born Sept. 30, 1918, in Shevlin, Minn. and resided in various other Minnesota communities.

She is survived by her two daughters, Marlene (Dennis) Esler of Palo and Myrna L. (Lee) Benoit of Virginia; four grandchildren, Donald (Andrea) Esler, Duane (fiance Darlene Rollins), Debby Esler and Theresa (Dan) Lovdahl; and two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Nicolas Lovdahl.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hulda and Alfred Olson; and husband, Lawrence K. Olson.

Urban Peroceschi
Urban Peroceschi, 79, SERVICES: Funeral was held Saturday in the Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.

Urban Peroceschi, 79, of Hibbing died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at his home.

He was born in St. Paul on July 30, 1921, to Urban and Pauline Peroceschi and had lived in Hibbing most of his life. He was employed as a railroad conductor with the DM & IR Railroad. He was a World War II veteran, a member of the Moose Lodge and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8510. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, dancing, gardening and book reading.

He is survived by his special friend, Tyne Limmer, of Hibbing; two sons, David in Stillwater and Eugene in Alaska; a daughter, Lyn Lynch, of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Janene, Bradley and Gregg and many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, June, and daughter, Colleen Gregg.
