Mary Joanne Erchul
Mary Joanne Erchul, 72, SERVICES: A Memorial Mass was held in her honor on May 19, 2001, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Irvine, Calif.

Mary Joanne Erchul, 72, of Irvine, Calif., died Tuesday, May 15, 2001. She was born in Morris, Minn. on Jan. 6, 1929, to Thomas and Mary Brown. She moved to Ely with her family in 1946, and graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1947. She married Benedict M. Erchul of Soudan on July 15, 1950, at nuptial rites held in Ely.

The couple established a home in Virginia, where they resided until 1967, when they moved to La Crescenta, Calif. When Benedict retired, they moved to Irvine. They returned to Minnesota almost every summer to spend time with relatives and friends and Mary was well known to many Tower-Soudan and Lake Vermilion residents.

She was a member of K.S.K.J. Lodge No. 4 of Tower and St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Irvine.

Survivors include her husband, Benedict M. Erchul of Irvine;; her sister, Vera Peters of St. Paul; three sons, Dan (Mary) Erchul of Rochester, Minn., Paul Erchul of Antioch, Calif., and Ben Erchul of San Luis Obispo, Calif; four daughters, Katherine Erchul of Santa Clarita, Calif., Elizabeth Erchul and her husband Richard Milicov of San Bruno, Calif., Patricia Johnson and her husband Gregory of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Mary Erchul of Santa Cruz, Calif.; four grandchildren, Niles Wigley, Cheryl Erchul, Olivia Johnson, and Meridith Johnson; her in-laws, Joseph T. (Alma) Erchul of Las Vegas, Nev., Frances (Robert) Bizal of Chisholm, Margaret Schmidl of Huntington Beach, Calif., Agnes (Carl) Mattson of Soudan and Victoria Bobence of Ely; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Harold Raymond Udenberg
Harold Raymond Udenberg, 75, of Two Harbors, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at Lake View Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 2, 1935, to Clifford and Hazel (Thorson) Udenberg in Two Harbors, where he was a life- long resident.

Harold was active at the Developmental Achievement Center in Knife River, where he enjoyed his work.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Earl.

He is survived by his twin brother, Howard (Carol) and brothers Floyd (Shirley), and Eugene “Sonny” (Sharon), all of Two Harbors; sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Udenberg of Two Harbors; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held Monday at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Burial will follow at Silver Creek Cemetery.

Kimberly Ann Bloomstrom
Kimberly Ann Bloomstrom, 50, of Walker, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010, at her home.

Kim was born March 3, 1960, in St. Paul to Willard and Marie (Sadowski) Parenteau. She graduated from North St. Paul High School in 1978.

She then worked various clerical jobs and met Greg Bloomstrom while working as a secretary for the parks and recreation director in Oakdale. They were married March 2, 1984, in Stillwater, and spent the next few years living in the suburbs of St. Paul, Wisconsin, and Silver Bay before moving to Walker in 1997.

Besides being a mother and grandmother, Kim was employed by the Department of Corrections as an office specialist. She enjoyed camping, traveling, gardening, reading, crocheting, and living life as a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Because family was always most important to her, she was diligent in attending her daughters’ sporting events, and volunteered many hours at church and school.

Kim had a great sense of humor, and loved to laugh and have fun with friends and family. Her desire was to see others happy and enjoy special times together. She will be remembered for her warm, unselfish spirit, and deep spiritual strength.

Kim is survived by her husband, Greg; daughters Jennifer (fiancé Adam Jackson), Jaime (Aaron) Couch, Jillie, Jaclyn, and step-daughter Rachel (Scott) Peters; grand- daughters Mailena and Myla Couch, and Mia Jackson; parents Willard and Marie Parenteau; siblings Carol (Harry) Schulz, Jody (Mark) Falteisek, Renee (Tom) Mechelke, Bill (Rita) Parenteau, Scott (Kari) Parenteau, Tom (Shellee) Parenteau, Jim Parenteau, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a baby brother, Daniel Parenteau, and grandmother Verona Kotrba.

There was a funeral services Thursday at Hope Lutheran Church in Walker, with Rev. Philip Larsen officiating.

Memorials are preferred to Relay For Life-The Believe Team.

THELMA C HILBERT-SNYDER

She was born on January 30, 1912 to Charles Erland Anderson and Magda, nee Bergmark, Anderson. Upon graduating from the Two Harbors schools, she moved to Minneapolis to work, and then married John B. Hilbert in 1934.

At age 98, Thelma was called home to her Lord and Savior on May 1, 2010. She was born on January 30, 1912 to Charles Erland Anderson and Magda, nee Bergmark, Anderson. Upon graduating from the Two Harbors schools, she moved to Minneapolis to work, and then married John B. Hilbert in 1934. After John’s death in 1958, she returned to the north shore. In 1959 she married Ed Snyder and they lived at French River and McQuade Road until his death in 1967. She later returned to Two Harbors, lived at Harbor Point Apartments and enjoyed the many friendships that she had there.

Thelma is survived by her only son John (Jack) Hilbert and his wife, Judy. She is also survived by her granddaughters Sandy (Tim) Wendelin, Sharon (Rick) Dahlstrom, Julie (Jim) Wohlford and Jackie (Geoffrey) Olson, who treasured every moment that they were able to spend with her. A delight to her during her golden years were her great-grandchildren; Alex, Melanie, Josh, Joe, Ben, Andrew and Charlotte. She has many surviving nephews and nieces and their families.

She is preceded in death by her parents, by husbands John B. Hilbert, Edward Snyder and her special friend, George Waxlax. By her brothers Carl Walter (Huck) Anderson, Chester Gilbert (Checka) Anderson, Leo Alden (Deke) Anderson and Albert Leonard (Nen) Anderson.

Thelma will be greatly missed here on earth, but heaven just got a little more fun.

The Celebration service will be at Emmanuel Lutheran Church 602 4th Ave., Two Harbors, MN on Saturday May 22nd at 9:30 a.m.

Florence Peterson
Florence Peterson, 76, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010 in the Lake View Memorial Hospital.

She was born January 12, 1934 to Gotfred and Olga (Gran) Anderson in Two Harbors where she grew up and attended schools, graduating in 1952. She was employed as a secretary at Reserve Mining Co. until 1955 when she married Robert Peterson. Throughout the years they lived between Two Harbors and Finland.

Floss was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Finland and enjoyed teaching enrichment classes at the Finland school, cribbage, and dancing.

Florence is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Sr.; and brothers, Norman and Howard Anderson.

She is survived by a daughter, Dode (Chris) Dugas of Two Harbors; sons, Bryan (Patty) of Ely, Bradley (Kelly) of Superior, Bob Jr. (Crystal) of Finland, Ted (Heather) of Finland, 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, brother Gordy(Bonnie) Anderson of Two Harbors, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5-7PM Thursday at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors.

Services will be held at 11AM Friday May 28 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Harold R. Udenberg
Harold R. Udenberg, 75, of Two Harbors, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at Lake View Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be from noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday, April 26 at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Burial will follow at Silver Creek Cemetery.

Robert William Torstenson
Robert William Torstenson, 85, of Babbitt, passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at his home. Bob was born Nov. 15, 1924, in Two Harbors to Carl V. and Ellen (Bolander) Torstenson.

He graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1943 and joined the Navy a week later. Bob served as a radioman from 1943 to 1946 in Okinawa and Hawaii during World War II. He returned to active duty, in Japan, during the Korean War, from 1950 to1952 as a communications technician.

Bob met the love of his life, Verna, in January 1947 and they were married on Sept. 3, 1948. Some of their fondest days were spent at their Kane Lake cabin with their three sons and extended family during the summers from 1958 to 1984.

Bob worked as a locomo- tive electrician for the DM&IR Railroad in Two Harbors from 1946 to 1963 and at Reserve Mining in Babbitt from 1963 to 1983. He also had his own business, Babbitt Electric, for a number of years.

He was a caring, loving man with a Will Rogers demeanor, able to strike up friendships with complete strangers anywhere. His grandchildren were cons- tantly amused by his quirky humor and comedic tales of his youth.

Some of Bob’s favorite activities over the years included archery, fishing, waterskiing, and reading World War II profiles and histories.

He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Babbitt and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1539 of Babbitt. He was a Sunday School and confirmation teacher, and library reading volunteer.

He is survived by his bride of 61 years, Verna; sons Roger (Karen) of Springfield, Va., Gary (Mary) of Beatty, Nev., and James (Anne) of Roths- child, Wis.; grandchildren David, Daniel, Deanna, Derek, Bethany, and Lydia; and one sister, LaVerne (Roy) Penttila of Babbitt.

A memorial service was held April 24 at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Babbitt with Pastor Daniel Johns officiating. Military rites were performed by VFW Post 1539 of Babbitt.

Barbara Lee Schrader
Barbara Lee Schrader passed away at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids, Minnesota on May 13, 2010. Barbara was born on April 6, 1948 to Carl and Dora Sannes in Two Harbors, Minnesota.

Barbara grew up along the North Shore of Lake Superior and loved to walk the beaches looking for agates. Barbara enjoyed oil painting and drawing as well. She attended school in Silver Bay and marries James Schrader. Barbara lived in Two Harbors for several years and spent countless hours walking around town and visiting in the cafes. She had a wonderful network of friends, neighbors, and family to watch over her and visit with her.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father, Carl Sannes Sr. and her special friend David Nelson.

Barbara is survived by her son, Duane Schrader (Janell) of Perry, KS; her mother, Dora Sannes at the Silver Bay veterans Home; and her siblings, Carla (Dennis) Kimball of Two Harbors, Carl (Peggy) Sannes of St. Paul, Darlene (Vaughn) Hoff of Little Marais, Lynn (Conrad) Schmid of Bemidji; 4 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Our family wishes to thank all of you for keeping her safe and happy. A special thank you to the caregivers at the MSOCS Adult Foster Care Home and Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids, MN, your care and devotion to Barbara was exceptional.

A memorial service will be held at Cavallin Funeral Home on Friday, May 21, 2010 at 11:00 AM.

Walter F. Jarvi
Walter F. Jarvi, 87, SERVICES: Per Mr. Jarvi’s request there will be no services. The family wishes to invite friends and relatives to join them later this summer to share memories. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.

Walter F. Jarvi, 87, of Ely, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home in Ely.

He was born Aug. 31, 1913, in Parkano, Finland, to Niilo and Impi (Nygard) Jarvi and came to this country at age 6, on Dec. 24, 1919, and settled in Macumber, Minn. He had been an Ely resident since 1920.

He attended the Ely schools and worked at the Zenith and Pioneer Mines for 31 years. After retirement, he was an independent contractor. Walter was a unique man of the old school, a true gentleman and an independent scholar who enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and his family.

Special thanks to the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home nursing staff for their compassion and for nurturing both Walter and his family.

He is survived by daughters, Donna (Robert) Gerchman of New Brighton, Joyce (Jerry) Saisa of Virginia of Virginia and Lake Vermilion, and Merdie Merrill of Ely; grandchildren, Sharen Gerchman of San Diego, Calif., Jim (Tammy) Saisa of New Haven, Conn., Susan Gerchman of Grand Rapids, Minn., Steve (Dena) Saisa of Las Vegas, Stacy Owens (Chris) Swenson of Bloomington, Minn., Dan Owens of Ely, and Dawn Merrill of Ely; great-grandchildren, Desiree Palan and James Saisa of Martel, Nev. and Hailey Swenson of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nels and Ilona Jarvi; his wife of 60 years, Martha; his grandson Cam Owens; and his brother, Martin.

Dorthea Perham Goodfellow
Dorthea Perham Goodfellow, 94, Dorthea Perham Goodfellow, 94, died May 16, 2001, in Oswego, Ill. She was born Feb. 28, 1907, in Eveleth to the late George A. and Laura M. Perham.

She was educated in the Eveleth school system, graduating from Eveleth Junior College in 1926, from the Curry School of Expression in Boston in 1927, and from Wisconsin State Teachers College in Superior, Wis. in 1928. In 1931, she married John G. Goodfellow and lived in Kingston, Ontario while Dr. Goodfellow attended medical school, during which time she continued her acting and directing career. In 1936, they moved to Aurora, Ill., where she was active in presenting her own programs to organizations, and where she worked tirelessly to find good homes for many stray animals.

Survivors include her son, John (Darla) of Morton, Ill.; two daughters, Susan (Hans) Lagerloef of Sugar Grove, Ill. and Mary Teegarden of Torrance, Calif; four grandsons; one great-grandson; a brother, James (Aune) Perham of Sioux City, Iowa; and two sisters, Laura Jane Hill of Bergland, Mich. and Geraldine (Richard) Floyd of Ely.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, George M. Perham; and two sisters, Perdita Dramm and Marjorie Perham.
