Rosina Lydia Engman, 88, a longtime Virginia resident, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 14, 1913, in Watertown, Minn., to August and Louisa (Lohrke) Dressel. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1931 and graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a degree in elementary education. She moved to Virginia in 1936 and married Albert Engman on June 8, 1940, in Wayzata, Minn. She was employed as a teacher in the Eveleth, Parkville and St. Bonifacius schools. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Virginia and was a member of the Fidelis Chapter of the ADK Sorority.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary (John) Burns, of Waterloo, Iowa; three grandchildren, Tara Burns, Shawn (Maria) Burns and Brian Burns; a sister, Alice Soley, of Maple Plain, Minn.; a brother, Donald (Margaret) Dressel, of Minneapolis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert, in 1958; sisters, Dora Dressel, Gertrude Bauer, Lydia Bauer, Cora Lillemo, Sylvia Ketcher and Malinda Logelin; and brothers, Wilbur, Harry, August, Herbert and Clarence Dressel.

Doris Ruth Ransom
Doris Ruth Ransom, 75, SERVICES: Memorial service 10 a.m. Friday, June 15, at the First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach, Fla., with the Rev. Timothy Womack officiating. Donations may be made to VNA Hospice of Indian River County, 1111 36th St., Vero Beach, FL 32960 and the American Cancer Society, 1401 21st St., Vero Beach, FL 32960, in Mrs. Ransom’s memory. Arrangements by Lowther Cremation Service, Vero Beach.

Doris Ruth Ransom, 75, of Vero Beach, Fla., died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at VNA Hospice House after a brief illness.

She was born Nov. 21, 1925, in River Rouge, Mich., and moved to Vero Beach 14 years ago from Neenah, Wis. She graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., as a registered nurse. She was a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Neenah, Wis., and the First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach. She was a past president of the Sea Cove Condo Association of Vero Beach.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Wiliam R. Ransom Jr.; three sons, William R. Ransom III of Houghton, Mich., David Christopher Ransom of Madison, Wis., and Gregory Scott Ransom of Duluth; a daughter, Page Alyce Ransom-Adgani, of Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, David Dearing of Vero Beach and Jim Dearing of Commerce, Mich.; two sisters, Dorothy Ridenour of Vero Beach and Margaret Pittman of Cedarville, Mich.; and six grandchildren.

Brother Algot “Al” Nasstrom
Brother Algot “Al” Nasstrom, 83, SERVICES: Memorial service 11 a.m. Wednesday, with visitation an hour before service, at Kok Funeral Home-Cottage Grove Chapel, 7676 80th St. S., Cottage Grove. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Brother Algot “Al” Nasstrom, 83, of Hastings, Minn., formerly of Eveleth, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at his home.

He was born Jan. 13, 1918, in Sweden to Andrew and Anna (Bolander) Nasstrom. He served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific. He married Mary Zadnikar on May 5, 1944, in Virginia. In 1958 they moved to Eveleth. He worked for Minnesota Ontario Paper Co., International Lumber Co., SuperWood in Virginia, Arrow Shirt and for the Minnesota Department of Transportation sign department until retiring in 1983. He had also been a milkman and carpenter. He enjoyed woodworking and was a member of the International Woodworker Association. He was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the AFL-CIO.

He was the loving husband of Mary; beloved father of Sandra (Gus) Phillipich of Virginia, Joan (Arthur) Johnson of St. Paul Park and Nanette (Peter) Marsh of Cottage Grove; loving grandfather of Jody Phillipich, Tammy and Nicole Johnson and Justina and Richard Marsh; two great-grandchildren; and brother of Laila Persson and Alfon Nasstrom, both of Sweden.

Pauline Lach
Pauline Lach, 75, SERVICES: Memorial service will be held in Superior, Wis. Memorials are preferred to Red Wing Hospice in Red Wing, Minn.

Pauline Lach, 75, of Red Wing, Minn., died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Hi Park Care Center.

She was born June 22, 1925, in Superior, Wis., to John and Rose Tokar. She attended school in Bennett, Wis., and graduated from Superior High School. She married Alex Lach in 1948 and moved to Bovey in 1958. She owned and operated a beauty shop until her retirement. In 1996, she moved to Red Wing, where she enjoyed her grandchildren, playing bridge, bird watching, painting and the Minnesota Twins. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include Betty (Gary) Underwood and grandchildren Mike, Megan and Aaron of Red Wing, Bill Lach of Gilbert and Ed (Kay) Lach and grandchildren Rachel and Derek of Britt; three sisters, Betty (John) Mabry, Adele (Jack) Stireman and Verna Tokar; and two brothers, Louis (Ricky) Tokar and John (Mary Lou) Tokar.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex, in 1974.

Johanna Jerina
Johanna Jerina, 88, SERVICES: Funeral 10 a.m. Monday at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora, with the Rev. Joseph Sirba officiating. Visitation 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and will continue one hour before service Monday. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora.

Johanna Jerina, 88, of Forest Lake, Minn., formerly of Aurora, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in the Fairview Regional Hospital in Wyoming, Minn.

She was born Aug. 19, 1912, in Gilbert to Frank and Barbara (Vranesich) Spanko. She was a Gilbert High School graduate and later married Michael Jerina on Jan. 3, 1949. She worked in Ely as a waitress and was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Rudolph) Gajeski of Forest Lake, Minn., and Patricia Jerina of New York, N.Y.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Michael; brothers, Leo, Matt and Frank Jr.; and sisters, Mary and Annie.

Leon N. Turnham
Leon N. Turnham, 66, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Virginia Assembly of God Church in Virginia. The Rev. David Geary will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth, and will continue for one hour before services at the church on Monday. Burial will be in the Eveleth Cemetery.

Leon N. Turnham, 66, of Eveleth, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 30, 1934, in Wayzata, Minn., to Leslie J. and Margaret Turnham. He graduated from Orono High School in Long Lake, Minn., and from a welding trade school. He retired from General Electric. He had resided in Cook and Eveleth for the past 10 years. He was married to Lorraine J. Hague on Nov. 15, 1991, in Virginia. He was a member of the American All-Slav Club of Eveleth and Gilbert, the Christian Motorcycle Association and the Virginia Assembly of God Church. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a talented woodworker, a motorcycle enthusiast, and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, and children, Maria (Doug) Demski of Detroit Lakes, Minn., James Turnham of St. Louis Park, Minn., Marcia (Steve) Bartolus of Eveleth, and Leslie (Jason) Davis of Kent, Minn.; stepchildren, Sharon (Dennis) Brady, and Gail (Denny) Dennis, both of Garden Grove, Calif., Mark (Nancy) Wilbur of Moorestown, N.J., JoAnne (Mike) Hambly of Forbes, Minn., and David “Pete” Weddell of Virginia; brothers, John (Doris) Turnham of Joelton, Tenn., Ted (Jeanne) Turnham of Loretto, Minn., Al (Diane) Barnes of Sebastopol, Calif., Ron (Georgia) Barnes of Buffalo, Minn., and Phillip “Sam” (Mary) Barnes of Saint Michael, Minn.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph; his parents; sister, Laura Grabil; and twin brother and sister, Raymond and Ramona.

Keith E. Parsons
Keith E. Parsons, 71, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hope Community Presbyterian Church in Virginia. The Rev. Frank Davis, Ph.D., will officiate. Keith E. Parsons, 71, of Virginia, died Friday, June 8, 2001, in his home.

He was born April 21, 1930, in Evansville, Wis., to Earl and Nelda (Hoehne) Parsons. He married Roselle Mattila on June 2, 1956, in the Mountain Iron Presbyterian Church. He served as a Sea-bee in the U.S. Navy, and was a lifelong resident of the Virginia area. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Erie Mining Co., and LTV Mining for 33 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Hope Community Presbyterian Church and was a member and past president of the Virginia Men’s Bowling Association. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Roselle; a daughter, Karen (Rick) Poupard of Virginia; grandchildren, Katie Marie and Ryan Allen Poupard; sisters, Joyce (Norval) Dumond of Kelly Lake, and Virginia (Roger) Cernohous of Chetek, Wis.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew, Scott Dumond.

Raymond H. Kutsi
Raymond H. Kutsi, SERVICES: Private family services were held at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia on Saturday, June 9, 2001. The Rev. Kenneth R. Tamte officiated.

Raymond H. Kutsi died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 14, 1929, to Otto and Hilja (Jokela) Kutsi in Kinross. He grew up in Kinross and graduated from Mountain Iron High School in 1947. He was employed by the State of Minnesota Highway Department in Virginia as a partsman. He was the leader of several bands throughout his life. He loved to make people happy with his music and volunteered his services to area nursing homes and the adult day care center at the Bell Building. He was a member of the Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post No. 239 of Virginia; a lifetime member of the American Federation of Musicians Local No. 459 of Virginia and Local No. 18 of Duluth.

Survivors include one son, Ron Kutsi of Virginia; one brother, Bruno (Joyce) Kutsi of Gilbert; a sister-in-law, Elsie Maki of Arden Hills; a brother-in-law, Vernon Herrmeyer of Evansdale, Iowa; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell; a sister, Taimi Herrmeyer; a brother, Arvo Maki; and his parents.

James W. Toscano
James W. Toscano, 89, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with the Rev. Steve Daigle as celebrant. Visitation an hour prior to service. Casketbearers will be his six grandsons, Tony Grosso, Nathan Scott, Jamie and Danny Toscano, Ron Fesnick Jr. and Scott Fesnick. Honorary bearers will be his five granddaughters, Tina Grosso, Tara Scott, Tiffany Toscano, Louise Toscano Seeba, Nicole Mickelson. Burial in Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm.

James W. Toscano, 89, of Chisholm died Saturday, June 9, 2001, in the Leisure Hills Health Center in Hibbing after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born March 29, 1912, in Hibbing to Domenic and Mary (Basile) Toscano. He was a 1929 graduate of Hibbing High School and attended Hibbing Junior College. He was a lifelong Hibbing-Chisholm area resident. He married Loretta A. Degubellis on Sept. 9, 1939, in Chisholm. He retired in 1974 from U.S. Steel’s Minntac plant after 40 years with the company. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm; Loyal Order of the Moose-Chisholm Lodge 226; Chisholm Italian American Club; and the United Steelworkers of America Local 1938. He served as a baseball umpire for many years and was an avid bowler and Chisholm Bluestreak sports fan.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta; children, Roseanne (Jeff) Grosso of Red Wing, Minn., Regina (Patrick) Scott of Des Moines, Iowa, A. James “Jim” (Rose Marie) Toscano of Chisholm, Lois (Ron Sr.) Fesnick of Balkan, Mary (Charlei Hall) Mickelson of Chisholm; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Louie (Amelia) Toscano, of Hibbing; sister, Rose Stone, of Hibbing; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Ann Sereno and Mary Gentile.

Duane A. Salmi
Duane A. Salmi, 56, SERVICES: Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bauman-Cron Funeral Home in Virginia. Ben Tuininga will officiate. Duane A. Salmi, 56, of Mountain Iron died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at his home.

He was born Feb. 21, 1945, in Renton, Wash., to Oiva and Helen (Yoki) Salmi. He was raised in Mountain Iron by his grandfather, Matt Yoki, and his uncle, Eino Yoki, and was a longtime city resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He married Peggy Ann Irish on Aug. 26, 1972, in Harris, Minn. He was employed as a staff engineer for the Virginia Regional Medical Center for 23 years and was a member of the Yoki-Bergman American Legion Post 220 of Mountain Iron.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Ann; a daughter, Kristen Salmi, of Richfield, Minn.; sisters, Laurene Love, Pauline Glennie and Karla Zaren of International Falls and Wendy Walquist of Minneapolis; a brother, Dale Salmi, of International Falls; stepmother, Arlene Salmi; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Marcus 'Albin' Johnson
Marcus 'Albin' Johnson, 64, SERVICES: Private family services were held. Burial was in Idington Cemetery in Idington.

Marcus “Albin” Johnson, 64, of Virginia died Feb. 17, 2001, at the Buchanan Nursing Home in Chisholm.

He was born July 14, 1936, to Evert and Helia (Arola) Johnson in Cook. He grew up and attended school in Alango. He was a member of the United States Marine Corps.

Survivors include three children, Lynn of Virginia, Darrell of Wisconsin and Leah of England; five grandchildren; one brother, Ervin Johnson, of Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Wilho A. Walkama
Wilho A. Walkama, 90, SERVICES: Memorial service 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Palo Congregational Church in Palo, the Rev. Randy Melhus officiating. Inurnment will be in the Makinen Cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.

Wilho A. Walkama, 90, of Makinen died Monday, June 11, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 25, 1910, in Eveleth to Henry and Ida (Makela) Walkama. He attended country school in Makinen and was an avid boxer and baseball player. In his early years, he worked as a truck driver and later married Edith Davey on March 6, 1931, in Tombstone, Ariz. He worked in the coal mines in Arizona and also was a deputy sheriff. He worked for nearly 45 years as a self-employed logger in the Makinen area.

He is survived by his wife, Edith; daughters, Helen Maki of Hibbing, Joyce (Richard) Saarela of Palo and Carol (Burton) Jarvela of Sparta; sons, Robert (Sue) Walkama of Makinen and Dale Walkama of Aurora; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, William, and one in infancy; and brothers, Arnie, Howard, Eino and Wayne.

Thelma Hilbert-Snyder
At age 98, Thelma C. Hilbert-Snyder was called home to her Lord and Savior on May 1, 2010. She was born on Jan. 30, 1912 to Charles Erland Anderson and Magda (nee) Bergmark, Anderson.

Upon graduating from the Two Harbors schools, she moved to Minneapolis to work, and then married John B. Hilbert in 1934. After John’s death in 1958, she returned to the North Shore. In 1959 she married Ed Snyder and they lived at French River and McQuade Road until his death in 1967. She later returned to Two Harbors, lived at Harbor Point Apart- ments and enjoyed the many friendships that she had there.

Thelma is survived by her only son John (Jack) Hilbert and his wife, Judy. She is also survived by her granddaughters Sandy (Tim) Wendelin, Sharon (Rick) Dahlstrom, Julie (Jim) Wohlford and Jackie (Geoffrey) Olson, who treasured every moment that they were able to spend with her. A delight to her during her golden years were her great-grandchildren; Alex, Melanie, Josh, Joe, Ben, Andrew and Charlotte.

She has many surviving nephews and nieces and their families. She is preceded in death by her parents, by husbands John B. Hilbert, Edward Snyder and her special friend, George Waxlax; brothers Carl Walter (Huck) Anderson, Chester Gilbert (Checka) Anderson, Leo Alden (Deke) Anderson and Albert Leonard (Nen) Anderson. Thelma will be greatly missed here on earth, but heaven just got a little more fun. The Celebration service will be at Emmanuel Lutheran Church 602 4th Ave., Two Harbors, on Sat., May 22 at 9:30 a.m.
