Leon Boulanger
Leon Edward Boulanger, 53, of Two Harbors, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors.

He was born Feb. 5, 1957, to Loren and MaryAnn (Jeppson) Boulanger in Two Harbors.

Leon grew up and graduated from high school in Two Harbors, where he was a three-sport letterman in track, basketball, and foot- ball.

He enlisted in the Marines, where he served for 12 years. In that time he graduated from Marine Recon School, Mountain Warfare School, and earned his Rifle Marksman Badge, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Letter of Appreciation, Good Con- duct Medal, and Meritorious Mast.

Leon was stationed in Beirut, Lebanon, during the 1983 barracks bombing. He was honorably discharged in January of 1988 as a staff sergeant. He returned to the U.S. and lived in Hawaii for a few years before returning to Two Harbors.

He married Kelly Riley July 22, 2007, in Two Harbors. He worked at the Vanilla Bean and the Little Store, and was a member of the VFW and American Legion.

He enjoyed brook trout fishing, partridge hunting, deer hunting at the hunting shack, watching his special niece Mara swim for the Two Harbors Agates swim team, and spending time with his two cats and his dog, Britty.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Loren Boulanger and MaryAnn Hanson. He is survived by his loving wife, Kelly, of Two Harbors, daughter Katherine Sakamoto of Hawaii; brothers, Loren of Ft. Smith, Ark., Mark (Joann) of Two Harbors, Marty (Dawn) of Menomine Falls, Wis., and John Hanson of Houston, Texas; step-father, Dale Hanson of Two Harbors, and nieces and nephew, Mara, Brooke, Paige, Mikayla, Jessica, Shawna, and Cristiano.

A visitation was held before an 11 a.m. memorial service Thursday at United Church of Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Robert Sinclair
Robert Eugene Sinclair, 83, of Two Harbors, passed away Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at Sunrise Home in Two Harbors.

He was born to Robert and Isabel Sinclair Sept. 3, 1927, in Hinsdale, Mont.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sally; sisters, Memery Beyers and Marlis Vindurst.

Bob is survived by sisters Donna Osborne of Hastings and Pat (Glenn) Bode, of Fosston.

At Bob’s request there will be no services. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota.

JOHN W. “JACK” CARR
John W. “Jack” Carr, 85, passed away at home on Wednesday December 1, 2010.

He was born on April 3, 1925 in St. Paul, MN to John and Astrid (Megard) Carr. He attended school in St. Paul and Two Harbors. He joined the Marine Corps in 1942 and served 4 years with two tours of overseas duty in World War II. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for service on Guadalcanal and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and Bronze Star for service on the British Solomon Islands. He also saw action on Midway, Efate, New Hebredes, and Tulagi.

After the war he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. In 1947 he went to work for the D.M.I.R. Railroad as a brakeman, retiring in 1985. He married Eleanor Swenson in June of 1948 at Concordia Church in Minneapolis and they had 62 ½ great years together. He remained in the Marine Corps reserve and was called to active duty during the Korean War in January 1951 and was in North Carolina until September of 1951. He started Carr T.V. and Appliances in 1954 and operated the business until he retired in 1985.

Jack was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Moose Club, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, AAD Temple, Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans, Marine Corps Aviation.

Jack loved the woods, camping, skiing, traveling, and spending time with family. He instilled a sense of adventure in all of his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parent and two special uncles, Luther and William Megard.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 62 ½ years Eleanor; sons John (Marion) Carr, Mike (Becky) Carr, Dan (Mary) Carr all of Two Harbors; daughter Lynette (Johnnie) Simmons of Mora, MN; seven grandchildren Heather (Dain) Swanson, James (Jessica) Carr, Marc Carr, Brian (Carra) Carr, Jarl Olin, Felicia Simmons, and Amanda Carr; 3 great-grandchildren Conner, Jocelyn, and Ethan. We will miss him.

Visitation will be held from 10 AM until the 11 AM service on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors, in the Veteran’s section.

Frank T. LaZella
Frank T. LaZella, 95, SERVICES: Funeral services were held at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia on Saturday, June 9, 2001. The Rev. John Doyle officiated.

Frank T. LaZella, 95, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in Virginia. He was born April 1, 1906, in Eveleth to Thomas and Mary LaZella. He grew up in Eveleth and Virginia.

He was married by Monsignor Bilbon to Elvina Gersic on Oct. 24, 1927, in Gilbert. He was employed by USX for 40 years, retiring as a foreman in 1963. He was a Virginia resident for 85 years and always enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church of Virginia and was one of the original builders of the former St. John’s Polish Catholic Church. He was also a member of the former Virginia Moose club of Virginia and a prior member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by one daughter, Jacqueline (John) Kovich, of Virginia; three grandchildren, Tim (Gail) Kovich of Mountain Iron, Candace (Byron) Barone of Mountain Iron and Sandra (Keith) Giorgi of Eagan; one great-granddaughter, Mia Giorgi, of Eagan; and one sister, Marie MacInnes, of Michigan; eight nieces and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Elvina; his parents; four sisters, Victoria Ackerman, Rose Miller, Margaret Simpson and Estelle Indihar; and one brother, Albert T. LaZella.

William A. Kinnunen
William A. Kinnunen, 74, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Johnson Mortuary Chapel in Duluth. The Rev. Jon Wild will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Immediately following the burial, a gathering of family and friends will be held at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 1419 St. Benedict Street in Duluth. Burial will take place in Forest Cemetery in Duluth. Services entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.

William A. “Bill” Kinnunen, 74, of Duluth died Saturday, June 9, 2001.

He was born July 29, 1926, in Duluth. He was a 1944 graduate of Duluth Central High School. He was a veteran of the Navy during World War II, serving in the South Pacific. Bill married Dorothy Engebritson in 1949 in Duluth. He was employed by Minnesota Power in Duluth and transferred to Eveleth in 1956, retiring from there in 1989. Upon retirement, Bill and his wife returned to Duluth. He was an avid golfer, bowler and gardener.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; five daughters, Kristine (Larry) Saverslak of Dublin, Ga., Jane Kinnunen of Duluth, Nancy (Mike) Kinnunen-Maxim of Duluth, Mary Beth (Brandan) Curto of Avon, Minn., and Susan (Gary) Soya of Amarillo, Texas; one son, William Jr. (Nadya) Kinnunen, of Roseville; one brother, John Kinnunen, of Rhinelander, Wis.; one sister, Maymi (Ron) Matuscha,k of Duluth; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Viola.

Rueben A. Enzenauer
Rueben A. Enzenauer, 78, SERVICES: Memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron with the Rev. Kristen Foster officiating. Lunch will be served in the fellowship hall following the service.

Rueben Alvin Enzenauer, 78, of Lake Vermilion, Cook, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.

He was born Nov. 6, 1922, in rural Raymond, Minn., to Alvin and Elizabeth (Ziehl) Enzenauer. He attended high school in Raymond and later studied airplane engine mechanics in Omaha, Neb. He worked at the Dayton, Ohio, air base during World War II. He married Alice Lorraine Johnson on Jan. 13, 1943, in Willmar, Minn. He co-owned and operated an auto repair shop in Willmar. In 1947-48 he worked in Fairbanks, Alaska, as a carpenter. In 1950, they moved to Mountain Iron and he worked in exploration and well drilling. Later he started his own Enzenauer Well Drilling business. He retired in 1976, and then enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and restoring cars. They moved to Lake Vermilion in 1994, and in 1979 started spending winters in Mission, Texas.

He is survived by his loving wife, Alice; a son, John Enzenauer; a brother, Walter (Mildred) Enzenauer, of North Mankato, Minn.; a sister, Alice Skipper, of Virginia; an uncle, Ewald Enzenauer, of California; three nephews, James (Angelyn) Skipper, Ronald (Gloria) Enzenauer and Allen (Holly) Johnson; six nieces, Linda Cattrysse, Barb (Allen) Nelson, Susan (Dale) Johnson, Doreen (Howard) Makynen, Karen Clark, Christine (Tony) Kastella; many great-nieces and great-nephews; three special people in his life who called him grandpa, Matt, Jamie and Michael; and numerous other relatives and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; aunts; uncles; and one nephew, John Engstrom.

B. Ardys Nelson
B. Ardys Nelson, 72, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held in Lafayette, Calif., at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church on June 20, 2001. Memorials are preferred to the Leukemia Society of America or the Virginia Area Historical Society in Virginia.

B. Ardys (Hawkinson) Nelson, 72, of Dana Point, Calif., died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born Jan. 29, 1929, to Carl and Inga Hawkinson. She attended school in Virginia, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1946, and the University of Minnesota in 1950. She married Quentin Nelson (also a graduate of Roosevelt High School in 1944, and the University of Minnesota in 1950). She and Quentin moved to California in 1951. She taught elementary school, parent education classes and substance abuse intervention classes at the Contra Costa Marsh Creek Prison. She was active in her church, sang in the choir and authored the book, “Growing up in Olcott Park.”

Survivors include her husband, Quentin Nelson; sons Eric and Kyle; daughters, Kari Skahill, Jana Zonneveld and Kris Cahill; grandchildren, Andrew, Heide and Case Zonneveld, Shalyn and Sean Skahill, Kacey and Abby Cahill and Gian Nelson, all living in California; brother-in-law, Lennard (Jan) Nelson, of Lakeland; six cousins; two nephews; and four nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Inga Hawkinson; and a sister, Carol (Edward) Ribich.

Donald R. Gimse
Donald R. Gimse, 85, SERVICES: Memorial service 1 p.m. June 23 at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique, Mich. The Rev. David Hueter will officiate. Visitation will be an hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique. The family suggests memorial gifts to any chapter of the American Lung Association.

Donald R. Gimse, 85, of Savannah, Mo., died Friday, May 25, 2001, at a St. Joseph hospital.

He was born May 7, 1916 in Virginia, where he lived during his youth. A Minnesota state champion swimmer, he graduated from the Virginia High School in 1934. In 1938, he received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota at St. Paul, where he was a member of the Alpha Chapter of Theta Tau fraternity. In 1939, he began his career in electrical engineering as a civilian employee of the United States Navy in Washington, D.C., and was responsible for the design of various fire control systems for battleships. On June 23, 1942, he married another Virginia native, the former Leone Runn, in Washington, D.C. She preceded him in death on July 27, 1985. In 1947, he moved to Duluth and began work as chief engineer for Lakehead Pipeline Company of Superior. In 1967, he was promoted to assistant division superintendent and transferred to Bemidji. In 1969, he was promoted to division superintendent and transferred to Manistique, Mich. He retired from the company in 1981 and moved to Savannah in 1995. He was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church of Duluth, where he was active in church affairs and served as chairman of the finance committee. He also was a member of the BPOE (Elks) Lodge No. 632 of Manistique and a member of the IEEE, an electrical engineering professional association.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas J. Gimse of Savannah, Mo., and Peter Gimse of Carbondale, Ill.; two daughters, Sally Hart of Plymouth, Mich., and Karen Gimse of Marquette, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, Pedar A. and Anna (Meistad Peterson) Gimse; two brothers; and six sisters.

Shirley “Dolly” Muckler
Shirley “Dolly” Muckler, 81, SERVICES: Funeral 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia. The Rev. Joyce Slostad will officiate. Private burial will be at a later date in the Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are by Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia.

Shirley “Dolly” Muckler, 81, lifelong resident of Virginia and Lake Vermilion-Tower, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 4, 1920, in St. Paul to Benjamin and Natalie (DaPron) Schultz. She was a graduate of Virginia High School, Virginia Junior College and the Minnesota School of Business. She married Donald B. Muckler on Oct. 23, 1943, in Virginia. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed curling, golfing, bowling, fishing and hunting, and was a volunteer in the hospital gift shop.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 57 years, Donald of Virginia and Lake Vermilion-Tower; daughters, Pamela (Gordon) Rodby of Lake Vermilion-Tower and Melissa (Michael) Hahne of Virginia; son, Craig (Laura) Muckler, of Northridge, Calif.; grandchildren, Kevin Rodby, Allison Tekautz, Natalie, Spencer and Chad Hahne, and Naomi and Emily Muckler; great-grandchildren, Jarvin, Anna, Amber, Samantha, Hunter and Paige.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Muriel Way.

Raymond H. Kutsi
Raymond H. Kutsi, SERVICES: Private family services were held at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia on Saturday, June 9, 2001. The Rev. Kenneth R. Tamte officiated.

Raymond H. Kutsi died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 14, 1929, to Otto and Hilja (Jokela) Kutsi in Kinross. He grew up in Kinross and graduated from Mountain Iron High School in 1947. He was employed by the State of Minnesota Highway Department in Virginia as a partsman for 26 years. He was a member of the United States Army National Guard of Virginia. He was the leader of several bands throughout his life. He loved to make people happy with his music and volunteered his services to area nursing homes and the adult day care center at the Bell Building. He was a member of the Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post 239 of Virginia; a lifetime member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 459 of Virginia and Local 18 of Duluth.

Survivors include one son, Ron Kutsi, of Virginia; one brother, Bruno (Joyce) Kutsi, of Gilbert; a sister-in-law, Elsie Maki, of Arden Hills; a brother-in-law, Vernon Herrmeyer, of Evansdale, Iowa; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell; a sister, Taimi Herrmeyer; a brother, Arvo Maki; and his parents.

Ruth E. Blanchard
Ruth E. Blanchard, 84, SERVICES: Funeral 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, Minn. The Rev. Stephen Sveom will officiate. Visitation 5-8 p.m. tonight. Burial will follow the services at the Hubbard Cemetery.

Ruth E. Blanchard, 84, of Staples, Minn., died Monday, June 4, 2001, at her home.

She was born Nov. 18, 1916, in Frazee, Minn., to Frank W. and Maggie (Brooks) Day. She and her husband, Varley, ran a dairy farm and sawmill while raising their family. In 1965, they moved and worked at the Virginia hospital. They moved to Hubbard in 1978, where they operated the Hubbard Store. In 1984, Ruth moved to Staples, where she lived at the Hi Rise. She filled her time with caring for others in need of a helping hand and took pride in being able to do so.

She is survived by two sons, Richard (Pam) Blanchard of Brooklyn Center, Minn., and Ray (Cindy) Blanchard of Staples; a daughter, Shelva Larson, of Staples; a brother, Paul Day, of Menagha, Minn.; a sister, Daisy Jacob, of Menagha; a son-in-law, William Bliss, of Park Rapids, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Calvin; two daughters, Carol and Shirley; a son-in-law, Henry “Hank” Larson; brothers, Roy, Ben, Frank and Earl; and a sister, Edna Joy.
