George Gravich
George Gravich, 82, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Chisholm. Very Rev. Fr. Bogdan Zjalic will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm where there will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m. and Pomen services at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in Chisholm Cemetery.

George Gravich, 82, of Chisholm died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing.

He was born Aug. 12, 1918, in Kinney to Joe and Petka (Knezovich) Gravich. He was a 1938 graduate of Martin Hughes High School in Buhl and attended the University of Arkansas. He was a lifelong resident of Kinney and Chisholm. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was united in marriage on Nov. 27, 1958, in Chisholm to Helen Uchal. George retired in 1983 as a foreman from the St. Louis County maintenance garage in Hibbing after more than 15 years of service. He was a member of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Chisholm; was a past Master of Hematite Lodge No. 274 AF & AM of Chisholm; Virginia Chapter No. 77 Royal Arch Masons; Eveleth Commandry No. 35 Knights Templar; and AAD Temple of the Shrine of Duluth.

Survivors include brothers, Donald Gravich of Mountain Iron and Mike “Mitch’’ (Millie) Gravich of Buhl; and several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Helen on March 4, 1999.

Feda M. “Fifi” Nelson
Feda M. “Fifi” Nelson, 78, SERVICES: Memorial service 2 p.m. Friday in Rupp Funeral Home and Cremation Service Chapel in Chisholm. The Rev. Steve Daigle of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm will officiate. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in Chisholm Cemetery.

Feda M. “Fifi” Nelson, 78, of Chisholm died Monday, June 11, 2001, in Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.

She was born June 14, 1922, in Chisholm to Domonic and Feda (Rinaldi) Faggetti. She was a 1941 graduate of Chisholm High School and was a lifelong Chisholm resident. She was employed by the former Cluett-Peabody Shirt Factory in Chisholm and for Minnesota Twist Drill of Chisholm.

She is survived by her children, Candy Nelson of Minneapolis, and Mike Nelson of Chisholm; grandchildren, Justin, Kelly and Aaron Nelson; great-grandchildren, Trent, Caitlin and Kirsten Nelson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordon H., on Aug. 22, 1962.

Darlene H. Pauna
Darlene H. Pauna, 64, SERVICES: Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Landmark Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia. Rev. Kenneth Tamte will officiate. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Sand Lake Cemetery, Britt.

Darlene H. Pauna, 64, of Britt died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 1, 1937, in Sandy Township to Charles and Selma (Saari) Lindgren and was raised in Embarrass. She was a graduate of the Embarrass High School. She married Walter R. Pauna in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in 1957. She had been a longtime Britt area resident and worked at the Britt Double “G” convenience store as manager.

Survivors include one son, Steven (Jean) Pauna of Liberty, Ind.; two sisters, Ann (John) Tario of L’Ause, Mich., and Margaret Church of Monrovia, Calif.; two brothers, Arthur (Martha) Lindgren and Robert (Charlotte) Lindgren, both of Britt; numerous nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Lil (Bob) Olivanti and Vi (Ralph) Booker, both of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter in 1983; and two siblings, John and Ida Lindgren.

Hartley J. “Duke’’ Paulson, 78, of Virginia died Wednesday, June 13, in his home.

He was born July 20, 1922, in Virginia, the son of Phillip and Bertha Paulson and was a lifelong resident of Virginia. He was a graduate of Virginia High School and Junior College. He married Jo Johnston on Sept. 22, 1950, in Hibbing. He was a longtime employee of the Minnesota Department of Transportation; a member of the Virginia Masonic Lodge No. 264 AF & AM; and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Jo; son, Tim (Joyce) Paulson of San Francisco; daughter, Christine (Len) DeMuth of Cloquet; sister, June Paulson of Virginia; and grandson, Joshua Tynjala.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Alice E. Ollila
Alice E. Ollila, 86, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Virginia. Pastor Nathan Sager will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Town of Vermilion Lake Cemetery in Vermilion Lake Township. Arrangements are by the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Alice E. Ollila, 86, of Virginia died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

She was born on Jan. 6, 1915, to Charles and Anna Aliina (Jokiaho) Rankila in Pike-Sandy. On April 14, 1934, she married Wallace W. Ollila in Virginia. She was a member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church (Mary Circle), VFW Crellin-Tini Post No. 239 Ladies Auxiliary, DAV Kolstad Chapter No. 23 Ladies Auxiliary, the Pioneer Club and the Columbia Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean (Tom) Beste of Eveleth and Donna (Rod) Salo of Fridley, Minn.; four grandchildren, Dan (Kathy) Beste, Sandy (Craig) Eliason, Tracy (Monty) Lysne and Matthew Salo; three great-grandchildren, Eric Eliason, Lucas Beste and Mya Lysne; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace; a son, Marvin; four brothers, John, Arnold, Reino and Roy Rankila; five sisters, Jennie Miettunen, Hilda Pakko, Anna Hakala, Siama Chopp and Lena Brunfelt; and by her parents.

Toivo M. Lofberg
Toivo M. Lofberg, 84, SERVICES: Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2001, in the First Lutheran Church in Ely. Entombment will be in Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown. Arrangements are by Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

Toivo M. Lofberg, 84, of Ely died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in the Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital.

He was born Oct. 11, 1916, in Ely to Isaac and Adolphina (Koskimaki) Lofberg. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre of operation with the 96th Infantry Division and was in the initial assault force landings on Leyte Island in the Philippines and Okinawa. He was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School, was employed by the City of Ely from 1932-1977 when he retired, and was an avid cross country skier. He was a past member of the VFW Post No. 2717. Toivo was a very dedicated loving son, brother and uncle.

Survivors include a sister, Helia Goard of Ely; nieces, Lorraine Hanala of Tower, Marian Pelto of Baxter, Minn.; nephews, Edwin E. Anderson of Phoenix, OR., David Lundein of Duluth and Peter Marines of Nashville, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Lofberg; sisters, Edith Marines, Saima Anderson and Jennie Lundein.

William A. “Bill" Bradley
William A. “Bill" Bradley, 68, SERVICES: Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Ely. Arrangements are by Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

William A. “Bill’’ Bradley, 68, of Ely died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in the Ely-Bloomenson Hospital.

He was born in Minneapolis on July 7, 1932, to parents William O. and Nettie (Setera) Bradley. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a mechanical engineer designer for Rockwell International in Newport Beach, Calif., and International Totalizator in Carlsbad, Calif., for 30 years. He retired in 1994 and moved to Ely where he was an avid woodcarver and outdoorsman.

Survivors include his wife, Judy of Ely; four sons, Kevin (Bonnie) of Blaine, Minn., Mark (Cindy) of Vista, Calif., Jay (Robin) of Oceanside, Calif., and Mark of Carpenteria, Calif.; one daughter, Krista (David) Lynch of Kapaa, Hawaii; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Marvin (Barbara) of Oceanside and Jim (Carol) Bradley of Bloomington, Minn.; and his mother, Nettie Bradley of Oceanside.

He was preceded in death by his father, William O.

Richard D. “Dick” Lange
Richard D. “Dick” Lange, 63, SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday in Bear River Lutheran Church in Bear River, with the Rev. Peter Satren officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm.

Richard D. “Dick” Lange, 63, of Bear River, died on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in his residence.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; children, Douglas (Linda) of Eagan, Minn., Debora Lange (Tony Vander Wiyst) of DeGraff, Minn., and Duane (Melanie Bowman) of Chisholm; sister, Irene (Ed) Hemphill of Side Lake; brothers, Rudy (Chicky) of Angora and Bill (Shirley) of Cook; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard David Lahti
Richard David Lahti, 41, SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Virginia at the Kaleva Hall with the Rev. Kristin Foster of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Foundation.

Richard David Lahti, 41, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was born Jan. 31, 1960.

He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Virginia in 1978 and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1980. He moved to New York City, where he designed sets and graphics for off Broadway productions. He moved to Santa Fe in 1992 where he continued with his work. He loved the outdoors especially the animals.

Survivors include his mother Joyce J. Lahti of Virginia; father Ronald K. Lahti of Minneapolis; brother, Ronald Paul Lahti of Albuquerque, New Mexico; aunt Hazel Marks of Virginia; uncles, Jerome Jalonen (Dorothy) of Virginia and John Spolarich of Virginia; and numerous cousins and friends.

William “Bill" Mainerich Jr.
William “Bill" Mainerich Jr., 56, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fine Arts Center in Montevideo, Minn. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church in Montevideo. The Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Montevideo is in charge of arrangements.

William “Bill" Mainerich Jr., 56, died Wednesday.

He was a teacher with the Montevideo School System for many years.

Zoe Joan Anderson
Zoe Joan Anderson, 84, SERVICES: Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Memorial Mass at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl. The Rev. Father Clem Gustin will be the celebrant. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl.

Zoe Joan Anderson, 84, of Chisholm, formerly of Buhl, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at the Leisure Hills of Hibbing.

She was born Feb. 25, 1917, to Jack and Mary (Klobuchar) Samarzja in Buhl. She grew up and attended school in Buhl, graduating in the Class of 1936. On July 20, 1940, she married Gerald “Jim’’ Anderson in Buhl. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, the Buhl-Kinney Senior Citizens and Hibbing VFW Post No. 8510 Auxiliary. She was a past member of the Buhl Moose Lodge Auxiliary.

Survivors include three daughters, Judy (Milan) Ogrezovich of DeMotte, Ind., Jackie (Rod) Ogrezovich of Richmond, Minn., and Janmarie “Janet’’ (Ed) Pessenda of Chisholm; son, Jim (Sue) Anderson of Golden Meadow, Louisiana and Tower; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ann Morrissey of Laguna Hills, Calif., and Helen (Laverne) Patrow of Henderson, Nev.; and two brothers, Steve (Dolores) Samarzja of Buhl and Driggs (Edna) Samarzja of Yorba Linda, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim in 1983; parents; three sisters; and one brother.

James H. Erickson
James H. Erickson, 53, SERVICES: Memorial service at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Babbitt, with Pastor Charles Barnes officiating. Inurnment will be in the Argo Cemetery. Family services provided by Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home, Virginia.

James H. Erickson, 53, a lifelong resident of Babbitt, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in the Ely-Bloomenson Hospital.

He was born May 23, 1948, in Perham, Minn., son of Harvey and Enita (Makinen) Erickson. He was a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in Babbitt, class of 1966. He was employed by Reserve Mining Co. as a machinist from 1966-1984, and then owned and operated his own machine shop in Babbitt. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Babbitt.

Survivors include two brothers, Lowell Erickson and David Erickson, both of Babbitt; two sisters, Elaine (Steve) Thielbar and Rebecca (Steve) Scott, both of Embarrass; nieces and nephews, Amanda and Greg Thielbar of Embarrass, Scott (Kathleen) McGerik of Minneapolis and Brian (Bobbi) Erickson of Pierz, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Enita, in 1996, and his father, Harvey C. on Sept. 6, 2001.

Marian Abbott
Marian Abbott, 84, of Two Harbors, stepped into eternity with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Sunrise Home while surrounded by her family.

Marian was born Jan. 6, 1926, to George and Marie (Melbo) Waldron in Two Harbors, where she grew up and attended schools. She also lived in Beaver Bay and Duluth for several years, and was employed as a waitress at various restaurants, and later worked in the laundry at Lake View Memorial Hospital.

Marian was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Women of the Moose and the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. She enjoyed photography, crocheting, making afghans, and baking cookies.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents; and stepmother, Jessie; brothers, Ralph and Darrell Waldron; sisters, Betty Nelson and Rose Willis; her husband, John Abbott; a daughter, Shirley Kelly; and a grandson, Billy Christensen.

She is survived by five sons, Russell (Barbara), Bruce (Susan) Hansen, Darrell (Faye) Hansen, and George (Earlene) Hansen, and Robert Raymond; a daughter, Nancy Hansen; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; brothers, Roy and DelRay Waldron; and sister, Delores Salakka.

Mother will be missed by her family and friends with sadness and joy. Her greatest joy in life was to have her family together as often as possible.

A service was held Monday at Living Waters Fellowship in Two Harbors. Private burial will be in Silver Creek Cemetery at a later date.
