KAREN ANNA NURMI
Karen A. Nurmi, 88, of Beaver Bay, died Tuesday, December 7, 2010 in St Luke’s Hospital.

She was born November 8, 1922, to Oscar and Lena (Slater) Lovold in Beaver Bay. Karen grew up, attended school and graduated from high school in Two Harbors in 1939. She lived in Seattle for several years, where she worked for Sunshine Biscuit Company. Karen returned to Beaver Bay and was employed as a clerk at the Trading Post until 1951. She married Eino Nurmi on September 14, 1951. Karen enjoyed fishing, camping, and trips to the West Coast.

She is preceded in death her parents, her husband, Eino Nurmi; brothers, Leonard, Henry and Ole Lovold; and a sister, Elizabeth Garrison

Karen is survived by her son, Charles Johnson of Beaver Bay, MN; brother- George Lovold of Annandale, MN; two granddaughters, Amy (Brad) Liska, and Angie Johnson; great-grandsons, Luke Liska, and Nathan Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 9 AM until the 10 AM Service Friday, December 10, 2010 at Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay. Burial at Beaver Bay Cemetery.

Ida Quimby
Ida Marie Quimby, 76, of Two Harbors, passed away peacefully with family at her side Dec. 7, 2010.

Ida was born in Walker Oct. 22, 1934, to Sig and Alice Hovelson. She married Raymond Quimby in 1953 and raised a family of four children in Two Harbors.

She had a career of restaurant work throughout the region, last employed as recently as September making pasties at Betty’s Pies.

Ida was preceded in death by a son, Rick; and husband, Ray.

She is survived by daughter Cindy (Cliff) Taylor; sons Douglas, and James; and grandson, Kyle Taylor; all of Two Harbors.

A memorial service and interment is planned for Ida and Ray in the spring.

Arnold LeClair
Arnold P. LeClair, 91, of Two Harbors, died Thurs- day, Dec. 16, 2010, at Sunrise Home.

He was born July 19, 1919, to Peter and Elizabeth LeClair in Two Harbors, where he was a lifelong resident.

Arnold graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1937, attended Duluth Junior College for two years and was employed by the First National Bank (now Wells Fargo Bank).

He married Evelyn V. Carlson of Silver Creek April 22, 1942.

On Aug. 14, 1942, Arnold entered the U.S. Army and was discharged as a staff sergeant from Fort Warren, Wy., Feb. 1, 1946.

He returned home for employment by the bank, where he worked for 40 years, retiring as president and CEO in January 1979.

Arnold was active in the First Presbyterian Church (United Church) as treasurer and trustee for 20 years, president of the Two Harbors Civic Association, president and treasurer of the Rotary Club for many years, finance chairman of the Two Harbors Industrial Development Council, and was a member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; daughter, Susan Rosenbush; grandson, Kyle Rosenbush; brother, Leo; and sister, Jewel Standish.

He is survived by his son, Stephen (JoAnn) LeClair of Burnsville; son-in-law, William Rosenbush of Duluth; grandchildren, Lon (Christine) LeClair, Michael (Elizabeth) LeClair, Christine (Jon) Dahl, Trever (Kris) Rosenbush, and Jennifer (Greg) Ridgon; great-grandchildren, Katherine, John, Fredric, Jacob, Rebecca, Cassidy, Austin, Amelia, Gwen, Emma, and Cole; and step-great grandchildren, Autumn and Aleq.

There was a service Wednesday at the United Church of Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Russell Lawrence
Russell C. Lawrence, 86, of Chanhassen, died peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, in Two Harbors at Sunrise Home.

He served his country in the U.S. Army Airborne during World War II.

Russell was preceded in death by his wife, Edna.

He is survived by sons, Mark and Paul (Audrey) and daughter, Mary (Chester) Lundgren; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many friends and relatives.

Russell will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Living Christ Lutheran Church in Chanhassen.

Interment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.

Mayme Runnberg
Mayme R. Runnberg, 92, of Two Harbors, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at Sunrise Home with her family at her side.

She was born Sept. 1, 1918, to Victor and Ida (Stenbacka) Grondahl in Isabella, where she grew up. She graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1936 and lived in Isabella until moving to Finland in 1954, and to Two Harbors in 1993.

She was employed at the Co-Op store in Finland for 27 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; a brother, Eric Grondahl; a sister, Leila Youngquist; and daughter-in-law, Marlis Runnberg.

Mayme is survived by her sons, Donald of Silver Bay and Dale (Mary) of Lander, Wy.; a brother, Viljo Grondahl of Duluth; four granddaughters, Randi Bildeaux, Gina Dufault, Lisa Runnberg and Kristy Donohue; and four great-grandchildren.

May’s family would like to thank the staff at Sunrise Home and Dr. Allert for their excellent care, and Gary and Lorre Youngquist and family for their many visits the last years.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery in Silver Bay. Along with May’s burial, her husband Ray and daughter-in-law, Marlis, will also be buried. Look for a schedule in May.

Olaf T. Berge
Olaf T. Berge, 92, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Werness Brothers Chapel, 3500 West 50th Street in Minneapolis. Interment will be at Lakewood Cemetery.

Olaf T. Berge, known to friends as “O.T.” or “Berge” died in Bartlesville, Oka. on Dec. 1, 2001, at the age of 92 after an extended illness. He was one of the mining pioneers of Minnesota’s Taconite Industry.

Born in Sleepy Eye, Minn., Berge was a graduate of Hutchinson High School. He earned a degree as engineer of mines-geology at the University of Minnesota, School of Mines, in 1932.

Berge joined Pickands Mather & Co. (PM) at its Hibbing District office in 1942 after exploring for gold and working for Winston Brothers in Montana and working seven years with the Minnesota Highway Department. He first worked as an engineer and then a chief engineer at the PM managed Mahoning Mine near Hibbing. In 1952, he transferred as assistant district engineer to the recently formed Erie Mining Company where he developed mining plans and designed the initial mining areas for the pioneering taconite mining venture near Hoyt Lakes. He was named chief engineer in 1957 and assistant to management at Erie in 1968, a position he held until retiring in 1973 after 31 years with PM and Erie.

During his professional life, and into retirement, Berge was a vital and valued member of many civic, professional, charitable and church organizations in Hibbing, Hoyt Lakes, Lake Eshquagama, Green Valley, Ariz. and Bartlesville.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Paul (Calista) of Lyons, Colo., Bruce (Darlene) of Bartlesville, and Ralph (Anne) of Broadview Heights, Ohio; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

His wife of 53 years, Bernice preceded Berge in death in 1993.

Mary Jane Larsen
Mary Jane Larsen, 84, SERVICES: Arrangements for a memorial service and celebration of her life are pending with Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

Mary Jane Larsen, 84, of Boundary Street in Ely, died at home in her sleep Sunday morning, Dec. 2, 2001. She was born to Hazel and William Baldauf in Wisconsin Rapids on June 18, 1917. She graduated from high school and business college in Minneapolis and was employed as a bookkeeper before her marriage to Leslie A. Larsen on Sept. 7, 1939. In 1946 the partnership of Larsen and Strachan (twin sister Bobs and husband Charles) bought Deer Trail Lodge on what is now Ojibwa Lake. Over the next 43 years they built the small, primitive resort, into an award winning enterprise.

Mary Jane was very supportive of her church, the First Presbyterian Church of Ely. She was extremely active over the years in church officer, volunteer, and teacher positions as well as the Presbyterian Woman and Circle groups. She was a long time member and officer of Eastern Star, an enthusiastic member of the Music and Drama Club, sewed for the Hospital Auxiliary, drove for FISH, was a member of the Elections Board, volunteered at the library and anywhere else she saw a need.

She was a loving wife to her husband of 62 years, Les Larsen and mother to son Dexter A. Larsen (Kristin) of Duluth and daughter Lesley (Lee) Myers Fuller (John) of St. John, United States Virgin Islands.

She is also survived by her sister Margaret (Bobs) Strachan of Ely; granddaughters Laura Larsen Schmidt (Paul) of Fargo, N.D. and Stephanie Myers Bowers (Michael) of Alexandria, Va.; grandsons, Neil Larsen of Minneapolis and Andrew Myers (Ginger) of Bluemont, Va.; and great grandchildren, Christopher, John and Katherine Fuller of Chesapeake, Va., Nolan and Nathaniel Schmidt, Andrew Myers, and Samuel Bowers; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends throughout the country. This active and vital lady will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Kenneth W. Christian
Kenneth W. Christian, 85, SERVICES: Memorial services will be at noon Wednesday in First Lutheran Church in Ely with the Rev. John Bonk officiating. Spring inurnment in Ely Cemetery. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

Kenneth W. Christian, 85, of Winton, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, in the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home. He was born on Jan. 15, 1916 in Northwood, N.D. to Roy and Sadie (Greene) Christian.

At the age of 18, Ken joined the CC Camps near Ely. In 1937, he married Helvi Hokkanen in Ely. He attended Border Patrol Training School in El Paso, Texas, and over the years worked in Grand Forks and Minot, N.D. and Virginia. Ken entered the United States Navy in 1945 and served some time in Washington D.C. He returned to border patrol duty in Virginia after the service, later being transferred to Ely where he was Customs and Immigration officer until his retirement. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Ken was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife Helvi; a daughter, Lana (Gary) Tuthill of Ely; two sons, Keith (Yvonne) Christian of Seattle, Wash., and Stanford (Kathy) Christian of Mount Prospect, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Neil Tuthill, Susan Tarvin, Lars Christian, Nils Christian, Michael, Beth, Kevin, and Brian Christian; four great grandchildren, Hope Tuthill, Conner Tuthill, Christian Tarvin and Paulina Christian.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mildred Sjaasted; and two brothers, Phalen and Donald Christian.

Philip R. Carlson Sr.
Philip R. Carlson Sr., 84, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial, with military honors accorded by the Virginia Servicemen’s Color Guard, will be in the Veteran’s Section of Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Philip R. Carlson, Sr., 84, of Virginia, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the Virginia Convalescent Center. He was born Feb. 26, 1917, in Virginia, to Oscar and Ina (Sandstrom) Carlson and had been a life long Virginia resident.

He was a graduate of the Virginia High School and Virginia Junior College. On Jan. 8, 1944, he married Ann Elias in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was a United States Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was a member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church of Virginia, Virginia Elks Lodge No. 1003, Crellin-Tini Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1113 and Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post No. 239, both of Virginia, Virginia Rotary Club and Curl Mesabi Curling Club.

He established Range Office Supply in Virginia in 1949 and remained an active participant in the business until his death.

He married Harriet A. Hahne on Dec. 26, 1976, in Virginia.

Phil loved to hunt, fish, curl, spend time at his cabin on Turtle Lake, Ont., and at Pelican Lake, Orr. Spending time with his children and grandchildren was a big part of his life. He also liked to sing with his brothers-in-law at family gatherings.

Survivors include two sons, Philip R. (Sally) Carlson, Jr. and Gary (Jeannine) Carlson, both of Virginia; two daughters, Kaye (Dennis) Jorgensen of Virginia and Carol Jean Carlson of Cook; step-children, Sally (Sam) Slade of Tucson, Ariz., James (Kathy) Hahne of White Bear Lake, Minn., Mike (Melissa) Hahne of Virginia, Mary (Tom) Terch of Castle Rock, Colo., and Anne (Steve) Badanjak of Virginia; grandchildren, Aaron (Heather) Ryals, Matt Carlson, Tyler (Teasha) Jorgensen, Kamara (Tony) Potts, Kaylie Carlson and Ryan Carlson; step-grandchildren, Michelle (Gregg) Menaker, Stephanie Lanius, Jim Hahne, Sarah Hahne, Tyler Terch, Whitney Terch, Chad Hahne, Spencer Hahne, Natalie Hahne and Veronica Badanjak; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Eleanor Machek of Eveleth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Kenneth in 1945; first wife Ann (Elias) Carlson on Dec. 2, 1975; his second wife Harriet (Hahne) Carlson on June 19, 1988; and one brother, Alf Carlson.

William A. Schiltz
William A. Schiltz, 85, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Friday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely, with the Rev. James Scheuer as celebrant. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the Mass Friday. Spring burial will be in Ely Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely. Memorials are preferred to Parents Project for Muscular Dystrophy Research.

William A. Schiltz, 85, of Ely died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, in the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home.

He was born June 18, 1916, in Ely to Josef and Rose (Matko) Schiltz. He was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School. He married Laura P. Bureau from Waterville, Maine, on Jan. 14, 1946, at Sacred Heart Church. He was an employee of Lampert Lumber Co. for 34 years, where he became the manager of the Ely location in 1954 and remained in that capacity until his retirement in 1980. He was a lifelong member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, a life-member of the Knights of Columbus, elected to the first parish council, and served as a lector for more than 25 years. He was a director of the Ely Chamber of Commerce and a charter member of the Ely Lions Club. He served in the Army for more than four years, and was a member of the American Legion Post 248, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2717, and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include two daughters, Laura P. Summers of Minneapolis, and Melanie R. (Ken) Hall of Richfield, Minn.; two sons, Josef P. (Debra) of Andover, Minn., John A. (Carolyn) of Ely; six grandchildren, John W., Nicholas A., and Kayla S. Schiltz, Christopher D., and Jonathon P. Schiltz, and Anna Laura Hall; a sister, Pauline Parker, of Silver Springs, Md.; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Josef Jr. and John; sisters, Mary and Albena; children, William A. Schiltz Jr., and infant daughter, Theresa Rose.
