Wallace F. “Heikki" Heikkinen, 79, of Tower died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

he was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Soudan, the son of John and Anna Heikkinen. He attended schools in Soudan and Tower, graduating in 1941. He worked at the shipyards in Seattle, Wash., before being drafted. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a navigator in the Army Air Corps and attaining the rank of second lieutenant. Following his discharge, he attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth on the GI Bill. He played hockey for UMD and was the first captain of the UMD hockey team. He graduated with a degree in business and economics in June 1952. He married Ramona Nitz on June 21, 1952, in Waterloo, Wis.

Heikki was a very involved community member and leader, serving on the school board, volunteer on the fire department and ambulance service, secretary-treasurer of the Old Settlers Group for 34 years, Immanuel Lutheran Church and its council, secretary of the Lakeview Cemetery Association, the Vermilion Community College advisory board and the St. Louis County Real Estate Tax Board of Review. He was employed by the Soudan Mine from 1952 until its closing and by the city of Tower as clerk-treasurer for 19 years.

Heikki is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ramona; children, Gary (Susan) Heikkinen of Portland, Ore., Gene (Kim) Heikkinen of Chanhassen, Minn., Greta (Sonny) Nevala of Tower, Gail (Mike) Vesel of Duluth, Geralyn Heikkinen of Duluth, Gregg (Jody) Heikkinen of Rogers, Minn., Genelle (Dave) Bjorgo of Soudan and Garth Heikkinen of Morgantown, W.Va.; grandchildren, Jeremy, Shannon, Brandon, Nathan, Kalee, Kyle, Natalie, Nick, Melissa, Alex, Megan, Garth Matthew, Kassie, Katie and Kirsten; sister, Miriam Pucel of Ely; sister-in-law, Saima Heikkinen of Duluth; and nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Wayne, Walter and Wilho.

Heikki had a zest for life. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren very dearly. He was a role model for community spirit, life and most of all, love. We will all miss him so very much, but know that he is safe in heaven, at last.

Rose Voiovich
Rose Voiovich, 75, SERVICES: Funeral Mass 11 a.m. today at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Shakopee, Minn. Burial will be in Shakopee.

Rose Voiovich, 75, of Shakopee, Minn., died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in Friendship Manor in Shakopee.

She was born Sept. 19, 1926, in Aurora to George and Martha (Basich) Voiovich. She attended Aurora schools and spent most of her adult life working in Shakopee.

She is survived by her sister, Ann Voiovich, of Hibbing; nieces, Sharon (James) Lakso of Aurora, Nancy (Paul) Schons of St. Paul and Marian Voiovich of Rochester; and a nephew, Donald Voiovich, of Caledonia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Helen Marie Ruthenbeck
Helen Marie Ruthenbeck, 83, SERVICES: Funeral service will be 6 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Virginia. Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the church. Rev. Helen Marie Ruthenbeck, 83, of Duluth and formerly of Virginia, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

She was born Aug. 29, 1918, in Ortonville, Minn., the daughter of Peter and Laura Minnie (Drewien) Kohl. She was a graduate of Ortonville High School and continued her education in teachers training. She married Karl Edward Ruthenbeck on June 12, 1941, in Clinton, Minn. While living in Clinton, she taught school in a one room school house near Johnson, Minn. She also ran newspapers in Clinton and Wheaton with her husband Karl. In 1946, they moved to Virginia where Helen and Karl obtained teaching positions in the Virginia School. Once their children were in school, Helen worked for Virginia Co-op Clothing and Flowers By Ardy’s. In 1988, they moved to Mesa, Ariz., and returned to Virginia in 2000. Since 2000, she has lived in Westwood Apartments in Duluth. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Virginia, Northland Singers and the Virginia Reelers Square Dancers. Square dancing was one of Helen and Karl’s passions.

Survivors include a daughter, Karlene Marie (Jarrett) Hubbard of Monee, Ill.; two sons, Karl Mark (Mary) Ruthenbeck of Proctor and Paul Peter (Jill) Ruthenbeck of Virginia; six grandchildren, Jarrett, Jakara, Rebecca, Anna, Andrew and Laura; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Karl on Sept. 2, 2000; and her sister, Dorothy Lundborg.

Mary Lorraine Juntunen
Mary Lorraine Juntunen, 67, SERVICES: Private family services were held Saturday at the Vermilion Funeral Home, Tower. The Rev. LeRoy Holmes was officiant. Burial was in the Lakeview Cemetery, Tower. Mary Lorraine Juntunen, 67, of Virginia, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, in her home.

She was born April 23, 1935, in Soudan, to Ole and Julia (Jorgenson) Nelson. She graduated from Tower-Soudan High School, was a longtime resident of Tower, also lived in Seattle, and Golden Valley, then moved to Soudan in 1994. She married Edward W. Juntunen on Dec. 31, 1954, in Ely. She was a nurses assistant at the Pioneer Infirmary and Soudan Hospital. She was a very family-oriented.

She is survived by daughters, Mary Juntunen of Maple Grove, Minn., and Carol (Dean Peterson) Wolfgram of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; son, Paul (Mary) Juntunen of Maple Grove; sisters, Marcella Mollers of Tower, and Pauline (George) Johnson of Golden Valley; grandchildren, Crystal Wolfgram, Tyler Peterson, Peter Juntunen, and Susan Juntunen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Barbara Vesel.

Donald 'Donnie" Glende
Donald 'Donnie" Glende, 70, SERVICES: Funeral 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Nett Lake Community Center, where visitation will begin after 4 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Wally Olson will be officiant. Burial will be in Bois Forte Cemetery. Arrangements are by Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

Donald “Donnie” Glende, 70, of Nett Lake died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 2, 1932, in Canada to Herbert and Minnie (Martin) Glende. He grew up in Wisconsin and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He held various jobs in maintenance in Nett Lake. He enjoyed fishing, watching television, visiting friends and grandchildren, yardwork and was the “official dishwasher’’ at home.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy “Dooda’’ of Nett Lake; three sons, Richard Kletschka Jr. of Red Wing, Minn., Ricardo (Barb) Kletschka of Owatonna, Minn., and Roger (Lori) Kletschka of Chattanooga, Tenn.; six daughters, Peggy Kletschka Connor of Prior Lake, Minn., Dorothea (Vernon) Boney of Nett Lake, Cinie Brosheurs of Waterville, Minn., Pam Dauk of Cleveland, Minn., Roxy (Scott) Tolzmann of Mankato, Minn., and Robin (Kevin) Nordberg of Hutchinson, Minn.; a sister, Verna Halida, of Lubin, Wis.; 24 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Evert Albert Maki
Evert Albert Maki, 73, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Green-Larsen Mortuary, International Falls, with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik.

Evert Albert Maki, 73, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the Littlefork Care Center.

He was born Feb. 15, 1929, in International Falls.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth (Brent) Bacon of International Falls and Mary (Dennis) Saap of Littlefork.

Jerald 'Jerry' Kehoe, 61, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cook, with the Rev. Larry Antus, OMI, as celebrant. Visitation one hour prior to funeral. Burial will be in Morcom Cemetery in Bear River. Arrangements are by Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

Jerald “Jerry” Kehoe, 61, of Bear River died Sunday, June 2, 2002, after a recent diagnosis of cancer.

He was born Nov. 18, 1940, at Graceville, Minn., to Wilford and Marjorie (Wyman) Kehoe. He moved with his family to Bear River in 1946, and married LaVerne E. Scofield in Cook on Sept. 27, 1958. They moved to Circle Pines in 1959, and lived there until returning to Bear River in 1980. He was a machinist for 37 years, and retired from Minnesota Twist Drill in Chisholm due to health reasons. He served many years as township supervisor and sexton of Morcom Cemetery, and dedicated much time to community service and volunteer work for the betterment of Morcom Township. He enjoyed restoring Jeeps, old cars and tractors. He valued time spent with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, LaVerne; his mother, Majorie Kehoe, of Bear River; three sons, Jerry (Shelly) of Ham Lake, Tim (Kim) of Coon Rapids and Jason (Dawn) of Circle Pines; three daughters, Patty (Kevin) Hedgers of Lino Lakes, Brenda (Randy) Krone of Circle Pines and Sherry (Tim) Simpson of Hibbing; two brothers, Gaylen (Hazel) Kehoe and Allan “Al” (Judy) Kehoe, both of Bear River; a sister, Fran Birge, of Yakima, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wilford, on June 30, 1991; and a granddaughter, Shanon Krone, on April 10, 1988.

Lucille K. Bettcher
Lucille K. Bettcher, 92, SERVICES: Graveside services will be held at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Montgomery, Ill. Arrangements are by Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

Lucille K. Bettcher, 92, of Ely, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, in the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home.

She is survived by a son, Jim, and daughter-in-law, Rose of Ely; sister, Alice Van of Volkenbury, Ill.; grandchildren, Chris and Cindy of Ely, and Mike and Roby of Illinois; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; a son, Ron.

Walter R. Louhi
Walter R. Louhi, 88, SERVICES: No funeral will be held at Walter’s request. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date.

Walter R. Louhi, 88, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Golden Crest Nursing Home in Hibbing.

He was born April 13, 1913, in Chisholm to Andrew and Caroline (Aho) Louhi. His family moved in 1923 to Cherry, where he was a lifelong resident. In his youth he worked with his father in the lumber camps and built many stone basements on the Iron Range. He laid stone on the Frank Hibbing Monument and the Chisholm Field House. He married Lillian Anderson on Sept. 10, 1934. After marrige he worked underground mining until injuring his back. He joined the Bricklayers Union in 1952 and worked as a bricklayer until his retirement. He would often joke that with his bad back he got into something easy — laying block and brick. He would have received his 50-year pin with the union this May. After retirement he created a wood shop and enjoyed making furniture for his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lillian; three daughters, Jean (Dick) Lind of Hibbing, Arlene (Rodney) Erickson of Iron and Judy (James) Mack of Hibbing; one son, Richard (Betty) Louhi of Cherry; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Tiami (Eric) Carlson and Elvie (Eino) Lappala, both of Hibbing; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Terri Erickson.

Veryl Ihns
Veryl Ihns, 69, of Talmoon, formerly of Two Harbors, died Dec. 19, 2010.

No services were held. Arrangements were by Carroll Funeral Home.

Arlene Trende
Arlene Myrna Trende, 83, formerly of Silver Bay, died Monday, March 28, 2011, at St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth.

She was born Dec. 3, 1927, to Ernest and Alvina (Westphal) Kohlmeyer in Preston. She grew up in the Preston area, graduated from Harmony High School.

She married Frederick Trende Sept. 20, 1946. They farmed for a period of time and then moved to Silver Bay in 1954, where she was employed as a retail clerk and bookkeeper for several stores.

She was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church, Silver Bay, VFW Women’s Auxiliary 6204, and the Golden Agers.

She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and 500, her “coffee clutch,” needle work, and spending time with family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frederick; and sisters, Lillian Busitzky, Carmen Kohlmeyer and Norma Kohlmeyer; and son-in-law Richard Jonland Jr.

She is survived by her son, Richard (Charlotte) Trende of Hudson, Wis.; daughter, Diane Jonland of Iron; brother, Vernon Kohlmeyer of Champlin; sisters, Irene Grabau of Spring Valley, and Carmen Kohlmeyer of Champlin; grandchildren, Bethany (Kris) Murphy, Andrea (Korey) Werk and Scott Trende; great-granddaughter, Kayla Grace Murphy; great-grandsons, Brayden and Keegan Werk, and Emmet Murphy; many nieces and nephews; and many friends at Northland Village Assisted Living in Buhl.

Many thanks to the staff at Northland.

Visitation will beginning at 10 a.m. today before an 11 a.m. service at Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay. Burial will be in Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery in Beaver Bay Township.

Cora Katzele
Cora Katzele, 86, passed away peacefully April 3, 2011, in Two Harbors.

Cora Williams Katzele was born in Redwood Falls Jan. 12, 1925, to Cora and Howard Williams.

Cora married Ed Katzele in 1945. Cora and Ed raised her three younger siblings, Pat, Daizy, and Dorie, upon the death of their mother.

In 1963, after the death of her husband, she took a trip to Denver and fell in love with the area. She moved there permanently in 1965. Cora owned two beauty salons in her 37 years out there.

Due to health issues, she moved close to family in Two Harbors in 2002.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed; two brothers, Pat and Ed Williams; sister, Opal Pentilla; and brother-in-law, David Carlson.

She is survived by her sisters, Daizy (Norm) Litman of Duluth, and Dorie (Dave) Carlson of Two Harbors; special niece, Christie Higgins of Two Harbors; and several other nieces and nephews in Minnesota.
