Coral Jean Johnson
Coral Jean Johnson, 80, of Two Harbors, formerly of Silver Bay, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the Ecumen Scenic Shores care center in Two Harbors.

She was born Oct. 9, 1930, to Ben and Mary (Satter) Johnson in Two Harbors.

Coral married Milton Johnson April 2, 1949, in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. They mov-ed to Silver Bay, where they raised their family. Coral was a homemaker through the years and a member of the Silver Bay VFW Women’s Auxiliary, Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay, and Bethlehem Lutheran.

She moved to Two Harbors in 2008 to be under the care of her daughters. She enjoyed taking care of her home and her family.

Coral is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Milton; and siblings, Chester “Smokey” Johnson, Edith Call, Helen Puent, Norman Johnson, and Elwood Johnson.

She is survived by her seven children, Sandra (Gene) Gangestad of Two Harbors, Terri (Orwoll) Edeen of Saginaw, Mark (Suzan) Johnson of Duluth, Sherry (Larry) Gilbert of Two Harbors, David (Maren) Johnson of Rochester, Daniel (Sue Walters) Johnson of St. Cloud, and Steven (Carrie Morales) Johnson of Nash-ville; 13 grandchildren, Dr. Angelina (Jeffry Hexter) Gangestad, Scott (Jennifer) Havlick, Stephanie (Zac) Bentz, Shane Johnson, Christina Gilbert, Andrew (Teather) Gangestad, Anissa (Leo) Lukas, Andrea (Aaren) Petersen, Amanda (Steve) Kaster, Bradley Johnson, Cinthia Johnson, Lindsey Johnson, and Steven Johnson; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A private graveside service is planned at Lakeview Cemetery.

Lawrence 'Larry' Cadeau
Lawrence 'Larry' Cadeau, 37, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Kenneth R. Tamte will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl.

Lawrence “Larry” Cadeau, 37, of Kinney, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at the Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis following complications from a heart and double lung transplant.

He was born July 21, 1964, to Kenneth and Wilma (Brenner) Cadeau in Virginia. He lived his entire life in the Virginia area and was a member of the Virginia Class of 1982. On Aug. 25, 1990, he married Michelle Dahl in Kinney. For the past 10 years he worked at Fortune Bay Resort Casino until health problems caused his retirement in November 2001. He was a loving and devoted father and husband. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, scuba diving, and baseball. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. He was a member of the Yorki-Bergman American Legion Post No. 220 of Mountain Iron.

Survivors include his wife, Michelle; daughter, Taylor Cadeau; brothers, Kenneth (Judy) Cadeau Jr. of Gilbert, Ray (Speedy) Cadeau of Hibbing; sisters, Mickey (Jim) Nelson of Virginia, Jeanne (Russ) Aho of Ely Lake, Julie Cadeau of Virginia; mother- and father-in-law, Roger and Jan Pauling of Kinney; other in-laws, Mike and Kim Dahl of Kinney, James and Tina Pauling of Britt, Jen Pauling of Britt; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He’ll be missed by his constant canine companion, Reggie.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert E. “Bob” Koyiol
Robert E. “Bob” Koyiol, 76, SERVICES: A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. memorial service on Sunday in St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, 4401 Glenwood St., in Duluth. The Rev. Margaret Warren Thomas will officiate. Memorials may be directed to the Regional Heart Center of St. Mary’s Medical Center, or Ducks Unlimited. Arrangements are by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, of Duluth.

Robert E. “Bob” Koyiol, 76, of Duluth, died on Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in St. Mary’s Medical Center.

He was born on Nov. 23, 1925, in Brainerd to Joseph and Lillian (Schwarzkopf) Koyiol. He was a 1943 graduate of Duluth Central High School, and a 1950 graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in business. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in both the European and Pacific theatres. He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley M. Salo, on June 12, 1948, in Duluth. He worked in purchasing at Pickands Mather in Duluth for 10 years and at Erie Mining Co. in Hoyt Lakes until he retired in 1982. He moved back to Duluth after 21 years at Lake Eshquaguma. He and Shirley spent their winters in Las Vegas. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. He was a former member of the Eshquaguma Country Club and Ducks Unlimited. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. Blessed be the memory of Bob Koyiol.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Shirley; son, Rick (Judy) Koyiol of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Sherry (Douglas) Maxwell of Shorewood, Minn.; and grandchildren, Joe, Sam, and Sydney; several cousins, special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Betty E. Harstad
Betty E. Harstad, 74, SERVICES: Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday in Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes. The Rev. Brian Birk will officiate. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday in Vinger Cemetery in Donnelly, Minn. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home of Aurora.

Betty E. Harstad, 74, of Hoyt Lakes, died on Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at her residence in Hoyt Lakes.

She was born on Dec. 7, 1927, in Norcross, Minn., to Hugo and Gertrude (Feiblekorn) Bonness. In 1934, the family moved to Hoffman, Minn., and following her high school graduation, she worked for the local restaurant and grocery store. In 1953, she married Donald Harstad of Herman, Minn., and to this union, one son, Arlen, was born. They lived in Hibbing prior to moving to Hoyt Lakes in 1956. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time at her home and with family and friends. She also worked as a Shaklee distributor.

Survivors include her husband, Donald of Hoyt Lakes, son, Arlen of Roseau, Minn., and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, DuWayne Bonness.

Averie Ann Peterson
Averie Ann Peterson, 77, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Chapel of Holy Spirit Parish. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements are by the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Averie Ann Peterson, 77, of Virginia died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

She was born April 5, 1925, to Ed and Pearl (Nault) Poupard Sr. in Virginia. She grew up and attended school in Virginia, graduating from Roosevelt High School Class of 1942. She worked for the Treasury Department in Chicago from 1943 to 1945. On March 4, 1946, she married Henry O. Peterson Jr. in Virginia. She was a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a former member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and attended services at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, both of Virginia. Her husband was an electrical general foreman at Minntac and a drummer with local dance bands.

Survivors include one son, Darryl (Diane) Peterson of Rochester, Minn.; two daughters, Cheryl Mager of Bloomington, Minn., and Shelley (Greg) Padgett of Saginaw; five grandchildren, Scott Peterson, Jeremy (Amy) Peterson, Danielle (Ben) Steele, Kimberly Mager and Kris Mager; four great-grandchildren, Ashley Peterson, Morgan Peterson, Tyler Steele and Cole Steele; two brothers, Ed (Lucy) Poupard of Virginia and Richard (Judy) Poupard Sr. of rural Tower; one sister, Mary Lou (Melvin) Skoglund of Virginia; sister-in-law, Carme Kure of Virginia; special friend, Clarice Shepersky of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry on Nov. 10, 1983; a foster brother, Joe Kure; and her parents.

Her prayer was — A Polka Lover’s Prayer — Lord, I love to do the Polka — The happy music can’t be beat — When I hear the snappy rhythm — Wings seem to grow upon my feet. When my time here is up they can play a Polka — No sad organ music for me. No tears, no flowers, just polka music — And I’ll come dancing Lord to Thee. Amen.

Eileen V. Poderzay
Eileen V. Poderzay, 75, SERVICES: Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. rosary in Bauman’s Vermilion Funeral Home in Tower. Visitation will continue Monday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tower. The Rev. Father Rudolph Pakiz will be celebrant. Interment will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery in Tower. Family services provided by Bauman-Vermilion, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Tower. Eileen V. Poderzay, 75, of Soudan died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in the Miller Dwan Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born Aug. 4, 1926, in Soudan, the daughter of Lauri and Hulda (Kalenki) Avikainen, and was a 1944 graduate of Tower-Soudan High School. She married Anthony Poderzay on Sept. 27, 1947, in the St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tower and was a lifelong resident of the Soudan area. She was employed by the Minnesota Box Factory in Tower and worked as a caregiver at the Hearthside Homes. She was a member of the St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tower and its Women’s Guild, the KSKJ Lodge No. 4, and the Slovenian Women’s Union No. 34. She was an avid bowler in the Tower-Soudan bowling league.

Survivors include her husband, Anthony; daughters, Antoinette (Stanley) Petroskey of Soudan and Margaret (Jeff) Lecy of St. Paul; brother, Raymond (Rachel) Avikainen of Pike Township-Virginia; grandchildren, Jeannine (Michael) Gornick, Michael Petroskey, Chad Lecy, Kristin Lecy and Anthony Lecy; great-grandchildren, Jared and Taryn Grahek; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Owen Avikainen; and sister, Elaine Kosel.

Paul Everett Taylor
Paul Everett Taylor, 74, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday in First Baptist Church in Aurora. The Rev. Donald Fisher will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial with military honors accorded by the Aurora-Hoyt Lakes Color Guard will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery.

Paul Everett Taylor, 74, of Hoyt Lakes, went to meet the Lord on Thursday, June 6, 2002, in the Virginia Convalescent Care Center.

He was born on June 18, 1927, in St. Paul to Paul E. and Dorothy (Dransfeld) Taylor. He was a graduate of Duluth Denfeld High School and later served our country as a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He began working for U.S. Steel in 1950 and retired from there as an instrument repairman with 38 years of service. He married Loretta Johnson on June 28, 1968, in Sisseton, S.D. He also worked as a projectionist for the Maco and Granada Theaters for over 17 years. He was a former member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was currently an active member of First Baptist Church in Aurora. He was a member of the Christian Motorcyclist Association and was an avid woodworker. The Taylors were also residents of Eveleth for 25 years, prior to moving to Hoyt Lakes in 1993.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta; children, Jeff (Nancy) of Palasaide, Minn., Duane (Rosa) of Calumet, Ronald (Denise) of Rapid City, S.D., Lance of Minneapolis, Pamela (Gene) of San Diego, Calif., and Kristina of Virginia; sister, Virginia (Walter) Klaus of Farmington, Minn.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Stanley; grandson, David; and sisters, June and Judy.

Janice Olsen
Janice M. Olsen, 75, of Two Harbors, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

She was born on March 2, 1936, to Helge and Svea (Sundstrom) Jackson in Duluth.

Jan grew up in French River and attended schools in Clover Valley.

On Sept. 11, 1954, she married Keith Olsen. Jan loved music, singing, and playing the piano, flower gardening, birds, animals, camping, traveling, crafts, shopping, and playing cards. She was known for giving cards to everyone on any and all occasions and her 3 p.m. coffee time.

Jan was a lifelong mem- ber of French River Lutheran Church and its choir, church women’s group, and homemaker’s club.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Ronald, Phillip, Martin, Hilding, and Phyllis.

Jan is survived by her husband of 56 years Keith; sons Kenneth and Daryl of Two Harbors; daughter Kathleen (Bruce) Larson of Minnetonka; and son Kevin (Chris Mahai) of Hermantown; siblings Gerald (Jeanette), Robert (Barbara), Leslie (Carol), and David (Laurie); sisters-in-law Delores, Pat, and Avis; brother-in-law Tom; uncles Clifford (Lillian) Sundstrom and Carl (Evelyn) Jackson; and aunt Helen Krenz.

Services were held Monday at French River Lutheran Church.

Burial will occur at a later date at Lake View Palmers Cemetery.

Curtis Johnson
Curtis H. Johnson, 76, of Cottage Grove, died Feb. 22, 2011, from a lung disorder.

He was born Sept. 1, 1934, in Two Harbors to Sigfried and Emma (Marker) Johnson.

Curtis grew up and attended schools in Two Harbors.

He was in the U.S. Navy from September 1952 until January 1956. Curtis was a fuel attendant with Safeway and was owner/operator of Everyone’s Market in Eugene for a number of years. He also had a business in California.

He married Dorothy who died in 1992 and then on Feb. 27, 1993, in Cottage Grove, he married Deborah.

He previously had lived in Pine Valley, Calif., and Duluth, moving to Cottage Grove in 1991.

Johnson enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially the Portland Trailblazers, loved barbecues, and spending time with family.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah of Cottage Grove; two sons, Jeff Johnson of Bremerton, Wash., and Mike Johnson of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Vicki Cowan and Valerie Foulds, both of Hoquiam, Wash.; step- children, Cara Crump and Tiffany Dyemartin of Cottage Grove, Camile Davenport of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, Travis Lawson of Eugene, Lynn Granger of Tucson, and Dory Granger of San Diego; two brothers, Richard Johnson of Colorado and Warren Johnson of Minnesota, and 16 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.

Rodge M. Rosandich
Rodge M. Rosandich, 45, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. Pastor Joyce Slostad will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.

Rodge M. Rosandich, 45, of Virginia died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at his home.

He was born Dec. 6, 1956, to Roger A. and Jean M. (Lahti) Rosandich in Virginia. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School, valedictorian of the Class of 1975, Mesabi Community College and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1980. He was a registered professional engineer, worked in his field in Minnesota and Wisconsin and was a local business owner. He enjoyed the outdoors and he was a member of the family hunting shack.

Survivors include parents, Roger A. and Jean M. Rosandich of Virginia; daughter, Jessica and her son, Michael of Mosinee, Wis.; brothers, Ryan (Vivian) of Duluth, Randy (Lynn) of Mountain Iron and Reed (Garlynn) of Eveleth; six nieces and nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Frank R. Jemc
Frank R. Jemc, 72, SERVICES: Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home Chapel in Eveleth, with the Rev. Frank Perkovich officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service at the funeral home chapel. Inurnment will be privately in the Eveleth Cemetery.

Frank R. Jemc, 72, of Eveleth died Friday, June 7, 2002, at his residence.

He was born April 13, 1930, in Eveleth to Frank and Mary (Sersha) Jemc. He attended Eveleth High School and was a lifelong Eveleth resident. He worked as a shovel operator for LTV Mining. He enjoyed traveling to Slovenia. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing when he was able. He was a member of SNPJ Lodge and was a U.S. Marine veteran.

He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Skofich, and his brother, Martin Berk, both of Eveleth; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Frances Colarich and Mary Vidmar; and one brother, Max Berk.
