Bernice Hazel (Lindberg) Nelson
Services will be held Sun., Oct. 13, 2002 at 2 p.m. in the Solway Town Hall for Bernice Hazel (Lindberg) Nelson of Munger. She died Thurs., Oct. 3, 2002, in her home at the age of 92.

She was born in Beltrami, Minn. In 1918, her family moved to the Duluth area, and after graduating with Denfeld High School's second class, she became an on-the-job dental trainee. With no job description in those days, she performed everything from cleaning teeth to cleaning floors. As an FBI agent in J. Edgar Hoover's office with a trusty file cabinet, she nailed many a wanted criminal during WW II. Later, as a fore(wo)man at Western Electric, when management jobs were routinely assigned to the male gender because women weren't considered capable, she proved the theory to be fallible. She married Leslie Nelson in Duluth in 1959. She and her husband were volunteers of the year for St. Louis County, he for playing his accordion and she for dancing to his music with nursing home residents. Other activities included motor boating on Lake Superior, and canoeing and portaging in the Boundary Waters Area. She celebrated her 90th birthday tenting for two weeks in the Black Hills and the canyons of Utah.

She is survived by siblings Irene Rasmusen of Denver, Colo., Jerry Hull of Duluth, Peg Sjoberg of Kerkhoven, Minn., Sparky (June) Lindberg of Hermantown, Lil (Vince) Johnson of Munger, Elaine (Gene) Berry of Chandler, Ariz., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be given to St. Mary's Hospice or Hope Lutheran Church in Munger. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Arthur 'Art' Herman Lambert
Arthur 'Art' Herman Lambert, died Mon., Oct. 7, 2002 in his Second Ave. home. He was 83.

Art was a lifelong Proctorite. He was born in Duluth to Leonard and Alma (Gulbranson) Lambert. He was a 1937 Proctor High School graduate. He spent 18 months with the Civil Conservation Corp. In 1940, Art began a 40 year carreer with the DM&IR. He retired as a engineer.

Art was a professional boxer until he was 28. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, The United Transportation Union, Past President and member of the DM&IR Employees Association with the Proctor Golf Course. In 1987 the community honored Art's railroad career by naming him Hoghead's Honored Rail. He was also a member and past Master of the Euclid Lodge, Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite, and Eastern Star. He enjoyed golf, bowling, his cabin and traveling with Irene.

He was proceeded in death by his parents and brothers, Oliver, Vermund, Wendel, and Anton. Art is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Kriedler of Duluth and Doris McLain of Shippenville, Penn.

Irene Hardis Lambert
She died Oct. 5, 2002 in St. Luke's Hospital at the age of 81.

She was born in Hibbing. Irene was a 1939 Denfeld High School graduate and attended the St. Luke's School of Nursing, graduating in 1943. In 1944, she married Arthur Lambert. In 1981, Irene retired from St. Luke's Hospital as a Nursing Supervisor. She had been a Worth Matron of the Proctor Eastern Star, member of the Euclid Eastern Star #56, and a member of Daughters of Nile, serving as an officer. Irene was also a member of the Ladies Society of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, the Ladies Auxiliary Hospital Dads and the St. Luke's Alumni.

Irene is also survived by a brother Gust Jr. (Donna) Johnson of Duluth and a sister Ardell Thorstad of Minneapolis.

Donald Richard Spicer
Donald Richard Spicer of Wright, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1936, died Sun., Oct. 13, 2002, at his home. He was 84.

Donald was born in Duluth and was a life-long resident until retiring to Wright in 1980. He worked as a machinist for Great Lakes Auto Parts and Machine Works in Duluth from 1941 to 1954. He worked for the City of Duluth from 1954 until retiring in 1980 as supervisor of equipment. In 1988 he married Eleanor Dye in Carlton. He was a former member of IAM-AFL-CIO and of AFSCME-AFL-CIO Local 66, life member of Blood Donors, Inc., life benefactor member of the NRA, member of NRA-ILS, and NRA-PVF. Donald was a member of PERA, Minn. Sheriff's Assn., member of the Wright Senior Citizens, Wright Farmers Coop, and Lake Country Power Assn. He attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor, two stepchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Eleanor's four stepchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren.

Marguerite G. Moore
Robert Moore of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Marguerite G. Moore. The Duluthian passed away Sat., Oct. 5, 2002. She was 92.

She was born in Point Mills, Mich. Marguerite worked at St. Mary's Medical Center as a nurse's aide. She married William H. Moore on June 7, 1930 in Duluth. She worked as a nanny for many years.

She is also survived by three other children William (Faye Bennett) Moore of Hermantown, Yolande Kristiansen of Round Lake, Ill., and Michael (Lillian) Moore of Duluth, 28 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Services entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota, Duluth.

David L. Coleman
Sandra Anderson of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, David L. Coleman. He passed away Wed., Oct. 9, 2002 in St. Luke's Hospital. He was 73.

Dave was born in Mountain Iron. He married Nancy A. Cameron in 1958 in Duluth. Dave served in the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and the MN Air National Guard for a total of 39 years, retiring in 1989 as Senior Master Sergeant. He was president of Allied Taxi and co-founder and co-owner of the former Wilcol Ambulance Co. He was instrumental in the founding of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Rescue Squad. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, West Duluth American Legion Post No. 71, Ham Radio Operators Assoc., and a lifetime member of the Duluth-Superior Racing Association. He was a volunteer for the American Red Cross. Dave was former president of the NCO Club at the Duluth Air National Guard Base, and had been Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year in 1982. He enjoyed stock car racing as a member of the Nelson Racing Team, and being a ham radio operator.

He is also survived by his wife Nancy, five other children, a sister, and eight grandchildren.

Burial was at Calvary Cemetery, Virginia, with military honors accorded by the Virginia Color Guard. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Shirley Marie Anderson
Shirley Marie Anderson of Proctor died Wed., Oct. 9, 2002, in Benedictine Health Center. She was 87.

She was born in Bemidji. Shirley graduated from Denfeld High School in 1933. She married Carl E. Anderson in 1935. Shirley was employed as a medical secretary for 16 years working at the Medical Arts Building. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church. She had been active with Girl Scouts.

She is survived by her husband Carl, daughters Shirley (Jim) Sellman of Saginaw and Betty (Vincent) Pavik of Rockford, Minn., brothers Arthur Foucault of Orlando, Fla., and James (Josephine) Foucault of Hermantown, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Alice M. Anderson
Mark Anderson of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Alice M. Anderson. The Duluthian passed away Thurs., Oct. 10, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. She was 84.

She was born in St. Thomas, N.D. She graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in 1939. She was an Army veteran of WW II, having served as a nurse on the USS Shamrock. She married Robert Anderson in 1947 in Duluth. She retired as a nurse at Duluth Detox Center in 1983 after 13 years. Alice was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and involved in its choir and in United Methodist Women. She was a member of the American Legion Post 71 and St. Luke's Nurse Alumni Association.

Alice is also survived by her daughter Gale (Mark) Smithson of Duluth, two brothers, a sister, five grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Inurnment was at Oneota Cemetery.

Gerd Elizabeth Bakken Olson
Gerd Elizabeth Bakken Olson, who emigrated to the United States in 1920 when she was 7 and with her parents and two brothers, Aage and Finn, made their home in Proctor, died Fri., Oct. 11, 2002 in her Maplewood, MN home. She was 89.

Gerd was born on March 28, 1913 in Krokstadelva, Norway. Her father worked in the cars shop in Proctor. Gerd was confirmed at the Norwegian Lutheran Church in Proctor. She was a Proctor High School graduate. Gerd's sister Virginia was born in Proctor.

She married Martin Olson in Duluth, Sept. 30, 1931. They were involved in the bakery business, especially the well-known Bungalow Bakery on Grand Avenue in St. Paul. Martin served as president of the Retailer's Bakery Association and together they attended many national conventions. They resided in St. Paul and later Forest Lake, Minn. They retired to Mesa, Ariz. in the 1970's for the winter months, where golfing became a daily event. Gerd visited her native Norway many times, preferring to travel by boat. She was an active member of both the Kenyon and Lindstrom Sons of Norway Lodges.

Gerd was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers.

She is survived by three sons, a sister, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Dwight 'Tom' Warner, Jr.
Dwight 'Tom' Warner, Jr. of Duluth died Thurs., Oct. 17, 2002 in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born in Duluth. He grew up in Saginaw and graduated from Proctor High School in 1960. Dwight was a logger before going to work for the MN Hwy. Dept. in 1966. In 1975, he moved to Cromwell where he farmed until 1985. After farming he ran the feed mill in Kettle River for four years and then returned to logging in 1988 where he owned D&D Firewood until 1995. He married Geraldine Linskie in 1986 in Duluth.

Dwight is survived by his wife Geraldine 'Gerry' Warner of Duluth, sons Mark (Denise) of Saginaw, Todd and Scott (Doreen) both of Cromwell, Tyson (Christine) of Wright and Ryan of California, two children by marriage, seven brothers, three sisters including two from Proctor Penny (Barry) Marlow and Gail Gilbertson, 12 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth Enmark Opien
Services were held last week for Ruth Enmark Opien. She died Sun., Oct. 13, 2002, in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center at 91.

She was born in Duluth in 1911. She married Clarence L. Opien in 1930. Ruth was one of the first female automobile drivers in the Hermantown area and enjoyed driving her friends around. Ruth started her career as manager with the Hermantown Credit Union in 1950. She was open one afternoon a week until she recruited new members and needed to go to five days a week. She retired after 27 years as manager and continued to serve on the Credit Union Board as a senior advisor until the year 2000.

She is survived by a son, three daughters, 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Bethany Cemetery in Hermantown.
