Randy Rustad
Randy L. Rustad, 56, of Duluth, formerly of Two Harbors, died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Oct. 1, 1954, in Duluth to Everett and Lucille (Mathisen) Rustad. He grew up in Two Harbors, and graduated from Two Harbors High School.

Randy worked various jobs during his life, including work at the creamery in Two Harbors, and at various Milk Houses, and taught driver’s education. He also worked as an ice distributor and last as a bread distributor doing business as Ran D Distributing for Brownberry’s/Bimbo’s for about 20 years. He spent many long hours on the road but had friends at every stop.

Randy used to do a lot of golfing, taught both of his sons to golf and had planned to teach his grandson this summer. He was a member of Two Harbors and Duluth bowling leagues and was a past member of the Two Harbors Jaycees and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed playing cards, especially beating his sisters.

Most of all, Randy loved to sing karaoke, solos or beautiful duets with Renee (Al) Birman. He was a regular at Mary’s and the Reef, both in Duluth, and sang at other places too.

Randy was a man with a smile on his face and a huge heart, which he shared with his many family and friends. He kept an upbeat attitude, a ready smile, and sense of humor.

He spent his last days at Solvay Hospice House. The staff of Solvay and the staff of Essentia Health were exceptional and we owe them many thanks for their wonderful care for Randy.

He is preceded in death by his father, Everett; a special uncle, Allen Mathisen; nephew, Anthony Lind; and love of his life, Debbie.

Randy is survived by his sons, Justin and Aaron; grandson, Cooper Rustad; and granddaughter, Keeley Pellman; all of Two Harbors; his mother, Lucille Rustad of Duluth; brothers, Philip (Sue) of Siren, Wis., Larry (Tami) of Duluth, and Danny (Nancy) of Plymouth; sisters, Sandra Lind, Peggy (Jan) Wren, and Debby (Gary) Putney, all of Duluth; favorite cousin, Dawn (Doug) Becker; best friends, Rolf Mattson and Jim Nicolaison; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. tonight at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors and continue an hour before 2 p.m. service Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memo- rials are preferred to Solvay Hospice House or Essentia Health’s third-floor cancer and hospice unit.

Margaret Hastings
Margaret R. Hastings, 94, of Little Falls, passed away March 30, 2011, at Diamond Willow in Little Falls.

There will be no service and she will be interred in Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd.

Margaret Victoria Stubert was born Dec. 2, 1916, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, to Barbara Stubert, a Russian immigrant. Within several months, the local social service agency placed her in the foster home of Robert and Mabel (Loveland) Miller, homesteaders in the area.

The Millers changed her name to Margaret Roberta Miller and raised her as their daughter. The family moved to Minnesota and lived in St. Paul and Minneapolis for several years before moving to Two Harbors.

Margaret entered kindergarten in Two Harbors and graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1935. She continued her education at what is now the University of Minnesota Duluth. She taught kindergarten in Eveleth, Congdon Park in Duluth, and for 25 years at the Whittier School in Brainerd.

In 1940 she married Richard Hastings, her high school sweetheart. They were later divorced.

Margaret was a long-time companion of the late Gordon Rosenmeier, a Little Falls lawyer and former state senator. Margaret moved to Little Falls to care for him the last several years of his life and remained after his death.

Margaret loved and cared for animals. Needle pointing was a hobby and she cherished the many photographs she took of friends, animals, and nature.

She was raised a Christian Scientist and found direction and comfort from her faith all of her life.

Memorials are preferred to the Morrison County Humane Society, Morrison County Historical Society, Minnesota Historical Society, or the Rosenmeier Center at Brainerd Community College.

Darrin Theis
Darrin John Theis, 26, of Proctor, passed away Friday April 1, 2011, in Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born in Mankato to Clifford and Sheila Theis.

Darrin was a graduate of Detroit Lakes High School and the University of Minnesota Duluth.

He was a mental health care practitioner for Accend Health Services.

Darrin was an avid bowler and guitar player.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; brother Nick (Angie); nephews Nathan and Isaac Theis; in-laws Darlene and Mark Strausser; sister-in-law Noel (Phil) Resendez; niece, Chloe; nephews Philip and Jameson; sister-in-laws Tiffany (Steven) Seiberlich, and Ashley Strausser; several other relatives; and his pet children, Archibauld and Agnes.

Visitation will take place at 2 p.m. until a 3 p.m. service today at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth.

Mille Miller
Mille Miller, 91, of Lars-mont went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday April 6, 2011, in St Luke’s Hospice, with her family at her side.

She was born Oct. 11, 1919, to Andrew and Hannah (Happala) Barthell in Larsmont, where she grew up.

She later moved to Chicago and married Warren K. Miller in 1948. After the death of her husband in 1964, she returned to Larsmont with her children

to manage Barthell’s Resort. Mille was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Warren; a daughter, Holly-Bethe Miller; brothers, Milton and Walter Barthell; and a sister, Violet Sunde Giddings.

She is survived by her daughter, Patti-Joy (Bill) Crone; her sons, Bill Miller, Tim (Lynette) Miller, Geoff (Sharon) Miller, and Warren (Sue) Miller; 13 grand-children; 11 great-grand-children; a sister, Eve Matas Thompson; many nieces and nephews, including a special niece Marlene (Lester) Mattson; and many cousins, including a special cousin Madeline Johnson.

There was a service Sunday at Living Waters Fellowship in Two Harbors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Elijah’s Pantry Food Shelf or World Missionary Evangelism.

John Crego
John H. Crego, 73 of Silver Bay peacefully passed away Thursday, April 7, 2011, in New Hope.

He was born May 16, 1937, in Saxon, Wis.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Evora. He will be deeply missed by his children, Cheryl (Steve) Karlson, Curt (Carrie) Crego; grandchildren, Courtney, Carin, Robert and Anna; brother, Alvin (Genevieve); and his nieces and nephews.

John was a lifelong Green Bay Packers and Silver Bay Mariners fan. Those attending an 11 a.m. service Saturday at Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay are encouraged to wear the team colors. There will be a 10 a.m. visitation.

Memorials preferred to the M-Club (supporting Silver Bay athletics) or North Shore Area Partners (providing assistance to seniors).

James Duke Harris
James Duke Harris, 89, of Silver Bay, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, in an ATV accident.

He was born March 7, 1922, to Emerson and Gertrude (Downs) Harris in Superior.

Jim grew up in Superior and graduated from Superior Central High School. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 as a storekeeper 2nd Class, and served until 1945.

He married Evelyn Johnson May 22, 1942 in Superior.

Jim worked for various railroads before moving to Silver Bay in the 1950s, where he worked for Reserve Mining until his retirement in 1982.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and the VFW.

Jim enjoyed golfing, bowling, snowmobiling, and four-wheeling, which led him to be one of the founders of the “Wrinkled Riders Club.”

Jim and Dolly used to enjoy dancing with friends, which led them and others to start the Silver Bay Dance Club of the 1950s and ’60s.

They enjoyed, in their later years, traveling on bus tours. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Emerson; sister, Gertrude White; and infant daughter, Judith.

Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years, Evelyn “Dolly” of Silver Bay; daughter, Kathleen (Gary) Meyer of Rockford, Ill.; son, Thomas (Jackie) Harris of Beaver Bay; grandchildren, Todd, Laurie, Courtney, and Lindsey; 11 great-grand-children; and nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service was held.

A celebration of Jim’s life was Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Silver Bay.

Jack Reisinger
John H. “Jack” Reisinger, 84, of Silver Bay, died Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Bay-shore Health Center in Duluth.

He was born in Hibbing Aug. 27, 1926, to John and Mabel Reisinger. He served in the Navy in World War II.

He is preceded in death by his son, Mike.

He is survived by wife Lillian (Brown) Reisinger; son, Dwight (Joi); and grandson, Daniel (Dwight’s son) and granddaughter, Ashley (Mike’s daughter); step-grandsons, Mike and Troy Baker; and great-grandson, Chevy Reisinger.

There will be no service. Burial will be at the Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery family plot.

Marie Carlson
Marie Carlson, 66, of Two Harbors, died Saturday, April 16, 2011, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born Feb. 20, 1945, to Eugene and Norma (Heleen) Hill in Duluth. Marie worked at various jobs through the years, the last three employers being: The Lake County Humane Society, Irresistible Ink, and the Earthwood Inn.

Marie enjoyed traveling, vacations, family camping adventures, and Nascar racing. She loved animals, especially horses and her beloved Shadow; country western music, classic “Old Time” rock ’n’ roll, and Elvis.

Above all, Marie adored and cherished her family and friends.Marie is preceded in death by her parents, husband, James “Unga” Carlson; daughter, Brenda Hull; and granddaughter, TaJ’anna Cahoon; and her horse Shadow.

Marie is survived by her son, Lauri “Larry” (Kathy) Carlson of Two Harbors; daughters, Julaine Greenwade of Duluth, Ann (Mike) Welsh of Duluth, and Sandi (Ron Ryan) Carlson of Two Harbors; sister, Arlene (Roy) Lampela of Two Harbors; son-in-law, Tony Hull; dear friend, Carol Slowikowski of Rhinlander; and many grand- and great-grand-children.

Visitation will begin at noon Monday before a 1 p.m. memorial service at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors.
