Dorothy Mayfield
Dorothy Mayfield, 94, of Two Harbors, died Monday, April 18, 2011, at Scenic Shores.

She was born Dec. 8, 1916, to Louis and Mildred (Kringler) Larson in Two Harbors, where she was a life-long resident.

She married Richard Mayfield in 1934 and was employed as a nurse’s aide at the Community Health Center for 36 years, retiring in 1977.

Dorothy was a member of the HarborMates Club, the Women of the Moose, and VFW Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard, in 1982; a daughter, Mary Ann Mayfield in 1950; son, Robert in 2008; a brother, Louis Larson; sisters, Ethel Naslund, and Betty Juth; and daughter-in-law, Marie Mayfield.

Dorothy is survived by two sons, Donald and Earl (Pam), both of Two Harbors;

sister, Shirley Rodvold of Two Harbors; six grand-children and eight great-grandchildren.

There was a 1 p.m. memorial service Thursday at Cavallin Funeral Home in

Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Ecumen Scenic Shores Activity Fund.

Robert Abbott
Robert L. Abbott, 53, of Brimson, passed away April 4, 2011, at his home. Bob was born in Duluth Oct. 1, 1957, to Gerald and Ruth (Sather) Abbott.

He grew up in Two Harbors. After graduating from Two Harbors High School in1975, he served in the U.S. Army for three years. He worked on fishing boats in Alaska, then in construction during the building of the paper mill in Duluth and later as a wheelsman for U. S. Steel Great Lakes Fleet for 20 years, retiring in 2005.

Bob was a member of Steelworkers 5000 and Labor Local 1091. He loved hunting, fishing and his farm in Brimson.

Bob is survived by his parents, Gerry and Ruth Abbott of Two Harbors; his twin sister, Kathy Dover of Two Harbors; a nephew, John (Katie) Dover of Duluth; and aunts, Maxine Abbott of Two Harbors, Betty Lou (Dan) Denzler of Proctor, Susan Lamkin of Mankato, and Sandra Rosenberger of Avon; and several cousins.

Antoinette “Tona” Soukup
Antoinette “Tona” Soukup, 91, SERVICES: Funeral Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday in Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Aurora. The Rev. Joseph Sirba will be the celebrant. Visitation will be 5-7:30 p.m. on Sunday, with 6 p.m. prayers, in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Visitation will also continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Holy Rosary Church elevator fund.

Antoinette “Tona” Soukup, 91, of Aurora, died on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in Eveleth Health Services Park.

She was born on Dec. 2, 1910, in Mohawk Location (Aurora), to Frank and Antonia (Boh) Bernik. She was a 1928 graduate of Aurora High School, and worked as a switchboard inspector for AT&T Telephone Co. She served the company for 25 years, retiring in 1958. She married Charles Soukup in Chicago, Ill., on Oct. 31, 1945. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Slovenian Women’s Union Branch 35, the American Yugoslav Club, and the SNPJ Lodge 111. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Pioneer Lodge 559 of Chicago and the Aurora American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her brothers, Frank (Mary) Bernik of West Allis, Wis., Edward (Mildred) Bernik of Aurora, and William Bernik of Franklin, Wis.; sisters, Ann Krasovech of Naperville, Ill., and Mary Yersin of Greenfield, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles, in 1987; and sister, Julia Jankowski on March 6, 2002.

Jean M. Wahl
Jean M. Wahl, 74, SERVICES: Funeral 10 a.m. Friday at Billman-Hunt Funeral Chapel, 2701 Central Ave. NE, Minneapolis, with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Jean M. Wahl, 74, of Buhl/Mountain Iron, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Don) Poffenberger; a son, Walter H. (Susan) Wahl; grandchildren, Jodi, Wade and Erin; great-grandsons, Brent and Noah; brothers, Charles, Robert (Clarice), Richard (Hazel) and Merton (Louise) Rew; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Margaret Rew; her husband, Harvey Wahl; and grandson, Brent Wahl.

Vivian E. Tuomikoski
Vivian E. Tuomikoski, 85, SERVICES: At her request, there will be no services. She will be cremated and returned to her beloved blueberry hills of Burntside Lake. Arrangements are by Range Funeral Home of Virginia.

Vivian E. Tuomikoski, 85, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born Feb. 14, 1917, at home in White Iron, Minn., to Fabian and Maria Maenpaa. She graduated from the Ely high school in 1934. For a number of years, she helped her folks operate their Hillcrest Dairy Farm. She worked at the Ely Coop in 1941 and then went to work in New York City from 1942 to 1945. Returning to Ely in 1945, she started her own business, the Yarn Shop, and ran it until 1956. An excellent knitter, she taught many people to knit there, and through Adult Education classes, she taught at the Ely Community College and in Babbitt. At the last All Class Reunion, many of her students came to her and thanked her for getting them interested in knitting. She enjoyed knitting, traveling, fishing, blueberry picking, the lakes and wilderness, making many canoe trips into the canoe country now known as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. She was a 50-year member of the Ladies of Kaleva. She was married to Urho Tuomikoski on July 31, 1953, and they made their home at Kaleva Bay, Burntside Lake.

Survivors include, her husband, Urho; daughter, Mary Vee Tuomikoski, of Burntside Lake; a brother, Wilho “Bill” Maenpaa, of Hopkins, Minn.; a sister, Venny Jacobsen, of Tucson, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Viena Makela.

Frank “the Bear" Klabechek
Frank “the Bear" Klabechek, 80, SERVICES: The Cremation Service of Minnesota has taken care of arrangements. The family will hold a private service on Aug. 11. Please do not send flowers. A memorial fund in Bear’s name can be sent to the Clinton Volunteeer Fire Department, Iron, MN 55751.

Frank “the Bear" Klabechek, 80, of Iron died Monday, July 29, 2002, in the Arrowhead Senior Living Center.

He was born July 3, 1922, in Duluth, was raised in Virginia and lived in Iron all but the years he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Bear lived a life dedicated to his family and his community. He served the Iron residents as their postmaster for 38 years, a term as mayor and for a time as fire chief of the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department. Bear’s service to the people of the Iron Range includes planting trees for the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board and being active in the Eveleth Optimist Club and the Red Cross. His passion for hockey and hunting brought about two of his greatest acts of service. Bear was one of the founders of the Iron Range Conference Hockey Officials Association, and a longtime referee for the Arrowhead Hockey League. As one of Minnesota’s original 10 gun safety instructors, Bear served nearly 50 years in the program, and never missed a hunting season or opportunity to teach the importance of gun safety. The Bear was a man of amazing personal integrity, honesty, generosity and humor. He will be missed.

Survivors include his four children, Frank “the Taxidermist’’ Klabechek, Tom (Jarie) Klabechek and Dianne (Kern Jackson) Klabechek, all of Iron, and Richard Klabechek of Andover; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret.

William T. “Bill" Palen
William T. “Bill" Palen, 90, SERVICES: Funeral at 3 p.m. Saturday at Faith United Lutheran Church in Iron. The Rev. Arthur Dale will officiate. Visitation from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church. Interment in Forbes Cemetery. Family services provided by Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia.

William T. “Bill" Palen, 90, of Virginia died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 29, 1912, in Virginia, the son of Gustaf T. and Jemina O. (Maroste) Palen. He was a graduate of Cherry High School and married Louise J. Kohlroser on May 1, 1938, in Minneapolis. He lived in Virginia, Iron, Forbes, Minneapolis and Berkeley, Calif., before returning to Iron. He worked for the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway, retiring as a conductor after 31 years of service. He was a member of Faith United Lutheran Church in Iron and the United Transportation Union.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise; daughter, Roberta Palen of Chicago; sister-in-law, Herwanna Palen of Stillwater; niece and nephew, Julie (Larry) Arolow of the Twin Cities and Ted Palen of Littleton, Colo.; and a special friend, Roy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer and Edwin Palen; and his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kohvakko and Mr. and Mrs. John Franttila.

Aune Nordquist
Aune Nordquist, 85, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday in the Mlaker Funeral Home of Cook. Rev. Reuben Rosnau will be the officiant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in the Alango Township Cemetery.

Aune Nordquist, 85, of Cook died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 14, 1916, at Duluth to John and Sera Fina (Kallio) Sundvall. She grew up in Duluth, graduated from Central High School and worked as a cook and waitress. She was united in marriage to Albert Nordquist on Aug. 14, 1947, in Duluth, then moved to the Cook area, where she has since resided. Aune was a homemaker, and loved doing volunteer work in area nursing homes, accumulating over 6,000 volunteer hours. She was the North St. Louis County Senior Citizen of the year in 1990. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, crafts and handwork. She belonged to the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program).

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy (Peter) Hakala of Angora; one niece; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert on May 9, 1979.

Shelley M. (Glatch) Friendshuh
Shelley M. (Glatch) Friendshuh, 62, SERVICES: A memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9. A coffee an’ will be held afterwards at the home of Dennis and Donna Peterson to celebrate the life of our precious Shelley. A memorial Mass was held on Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Soldotna. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2165, Kenai, Alaska, 99611.

Shelley M. (Glatch) Friendshuh, 62, of Soldotna, Alaska, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna.

She was born Sept. 10, 1939, in Gilbert. She graduated from Gilbert High School and then attended Winona State College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and art. Soon after she married George Friendshuh and moved to Alaska where they resided for 36 years. Shelley was a youth hockey coach, a Eucharistic minister in the church, and a volunteer in the community. She gave to these and many other activities from her heart, never expecting recognition. She enjoyed traveling, arts and crafts, biking, walking and reflecting on the beauty of nature. In her caring and devotion, she dedicated her life to her husband, children, and grandchildren. She meant the world to us.

Survivors include her parents, Ed and Angela Glatch of Gilbert; husband, George Friendshuh; daughter, Sonya (Jerry) Marshall of Singapore; sons, Greg Friendshuh of Soldotna and Brad Friendshuh of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Gary and Deanna Marshall of Singapore.

Richard L. Lepisto
Richard L. Lepisto, 72, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, with the Rev. Kenneth R. Tamte officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service at the funeral home. Military honors will be accorded by the Virginia Color Guard. Burial will be in the Forbes Cemetery.

Richard L. Lepisto, 72, of Eveleth died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born April 13, 1930, to Eino and Victoria (Saxhaug) Lepisto in Superior, Wis. He grew up and attended schools in Forbes, Cherry and Virginia. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service and at Range Paper for a period of time. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Wagman on Sept. 5, 1953, in Virginia. Following marriage, the couple made their home in Eveleth. He went to work at Biss Repair for his stepfather, W.C. Biss. In the mid-1960s, he purchased the shop which he owned and operated. It is now Biss Lock and Gun Repair Shop. He was an avid pistol and trapshooter and was a member of the Virginia Pistol and Rifle Club.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Shelly (Thomas) Russ of Duluth, Kari (Michael) Bushey of Minot, N.D.; two sons, Steven (Eva) Lepisto of Virginia, Jack Lepisto of Virginia; six grandchildren, Patrick, Kevin, Zachary, Sira, Jake and Jasmine; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; and two brothers, Gordon and Gary.

Iva Dantes
Iva Dantes, 75, SERVICES: Memorial service 1 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, with the Rev. Kenneth R. Tamte officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Leiding Cemetery in Orr.

Iva Dantes, 75, of Virginia died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

She was born Feb. 5, 1927, to Lloyd and Belle Cheney in Yola, Minn., moving to Orr in 1937. She graduated from Orr High School in 1945 and was a lifelong resident of Orr. She married Harry Dantes on Aug. 22, 1946, in Cook. They made their home in Orr, moving to Virginia in 1995. They owned and operated the Wagon Wheel Resort from 1962 to 1976. She also was a cook and waitress at Patten’s Cafe. After retiring, she traveled to Europe, took the Trans-Canadian Lines to Vancouver and the Amtrak through the U.S. She also took a Caribbean cruise to the Bahamas and on through the Panama Canal to Chile. She loved her children, great-grandchildren and was a loving wife and mother. She was a member of AARP, Senior Citizens and the American Legion Auxiliary of Virginia.

Survivors include her husband, Harry, of Virginia; three sons, Harry (Anne) Dantes and Gary (Barb) Dantes, both of Orr, and Dennis (Virginia) Dantes of Eveleth; a daughter, Debby Dantes, of Carson City, Nev.; nine grandchildren; six-great-grandchildren; and her brother, Wayne (Shirley) Cheney.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved daughter, Maureen Vidmar; three brothers, James, Lloyd and Jerry Cheney of Angora; and three sisters, Dorothy Laakonen, Marge Wardas of Orr and Ruth Stupica of Embarrass.

Anna-Mae Kirscher
Anna-Mae Kirscher, 95, SERVICES: A family celebration of her life will take place in Santa Fe and her cremains will be buried in the family plot at the Virginia cemetery at a later date.

Anna-Mae Kirscher, 95, of Santa Fe, N.M., died Monday, July 29, 2002, in Santa Fe, where she had resided since 1997. Before moving to Santa Fe, she had lived in Virginia for 82 years.

She was born in Norway, Mich., on May 12, 1907, to Anna Lovisa Osterberg and Per Alfred Melin. The family moved to Virginia in 1915. She was a member of Hope Community Presbyterian Church of Virginia.

Surviving her are a daughter, Donna Peterson Brown and her husband, Lee Brown, of Santa Fe, N.M.; son, Brock A. Peterson and wife, Kathryn Anne Peterson, of Prescott, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Frederick Russell Peterson and Henry Dale Kirscher; her parents; sisters, Valerie Melin Swanson, Inez Melin Freeman and Evelyn Melin Cather; and brothers, Edgar Melin, Ragnar Melin, Rueben Melin and Fingal Melin.
