Richard A. Peterson
Richard A. Peterson, 71, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Saturday in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hibbing, with the Rev. Erik Holleque officiating. Visitation with no reviewal one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing. Military honors will be accorded by the Yogi-Bergman American Legion Post 220 of Mountain Iron. Memorials may be directed to the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. Family services provided by Anderson-Daniels, a Bauman Family Funeral Home, in Hibbing.

Richard A. Peterson, 71, a longtime resident of Hibbing, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, in the Golden Crest Nursing Home in Hibbing.

He was born Jan. 29, 1931, in Virginia to Paul and Clara (Kasulka) Peterson. He graduated from Mountain Iron High School and went on to attend Virginia Technical College and North Dakota State University, where he received his degree in drafting. A veteran of the Army, he served in the Medical Corps and was stationed in Alaska. He married Esther Soper on Jan. 29, 1955, in Superior, Wis. He worked for the Susquehanna Mine, and then for National Steel Pellet Co. as a surveyor and pit foreman. He retired in 1988. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the Lake Fourteen/Leander Club, the M.A. Hanna Retirees Club and the Yogi-Bergman American Legion Post 220 of Mountain Iron. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, woodworking, cooking and gardening.

He is survived by three daughters, Sandra (Jack) Radovich of Hibbing, Cheryl Peterson of Hibbing and Pauline (Steve) Madrinich of Chaska, Minn.; ten grandchildren, Antonia Radovich, Emma (Nate) Froehling, Heather (Rick) Halverson, Sarah (Aaron) Verke, Jessica Jelle, Stephanie Clark, Matt Clark, Alisha Scofield, Jake Madrinich and Nick Madrinich; one great-granddaughter, Melanie Udovich; and his friend and companion, Barbara Muck, of Hibbing.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther, in 1992; and his brother, Paul, in 1959.

Arthur E. “Sparky” Williams
Arthur E. “Sparky” Williams, 91, SERVICES: Memorial service 2 p.m. Friday at Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hastings, Minn., with the Rev. Doug Duin officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings. Arrangements by Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home of Hastings. Memorials preferred to Allina Hospice.

Arthur E. “Sparky” Williams, 91, of Hastings, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at his residence.

He was born May 1, 1911, in Markham to Victor and Alexsanora (Mullumaki) Williams. He married Helen L. King on Feb. 2, 1942, in Northfield, Minn. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving four years in the European Theater.

Survivors include his wife, Helen L. Williams, of Hastings; a son, Dr. Kenneth (Cheryl) Williams, of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Missy, Tony, Christine and Randy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; also two brothers and a sister.

Antonio Mariucci
Antonio Mariucci, 86, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia, with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements by Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Antonio Mariucci, 86, of Sand Lake died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Franklin Location, Virginia, to Pasquale and Maddalena (Casagrande) Mariucci, on April 15, 1916. The family moved back to Costacciaro, Italy, in 1920. He married Valeria Gambucci in 1944 in Costacciaro, Italy. They moved to Virginia in 1953. He retired from the Public Utilities of Virginia. He was a member of the Italian-American Club and Holy Spirit Catholic Church, both in Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Valeria Mariucci, of Sand Lake; two sons, Hugo Mariucci of Virginia and Louis Mariucci of St. Paul; three grandchildren, Luciano Mariucci, Annali Mariucci and Gian Carlo Mariucci; nephews, Bruno Scipioni, Dominic Scipioni, Donald Mariucci of Virginia, Richard Mariucci of Mountain Iron, and Pasquale and Roberto Mariucci of Costacciaro, Italy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Camilla, Loretta and Domenica; two brothers, Domenico and Sabatino; and two nephews, Louis Scipioni and Emil Mariucci.

Howard W. Knutson
Howard W. Knutson, 87, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. The Rev. Wally Olson will be the officiant. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today from the Mlaker Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Nett Lake Cemetery.

Howard W. Knutson, 87, of Nett Lake, died on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born on May 11, 1915, at Thompson, N.D., where he grew up and farmed for many years. He moved to Minneapolis, where he served as a missionary. He married Loretta Porter on Jan. 30, 1965, in St. Paul. They lived in Alaska for two and a half years, then moved to North Dakota, where he returned to farming for the next 20 years. They moved to Nett Lake in 1988, where he had since resided, and attended the Nett Lake Baptist Church. While in Alaska, he was a member of the Alaska Missions Society, and was on its board of directors. While in North Dakota, he was a member of the Gideon’s Society. He had enjoyed gardening, and was fascinated with cars, and helped his family in their care and maintenance of them. He liked music, especially music played by his family.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta; two sons, Tony Knutson of Fargo, N.D., and Neil (Amber) Knutson of St. Paul, Minn.; one daughter, Karla (Korstiaan “Arko”) denEngelse, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; one sister, Eleanor (Robert) Carlson, of Grand Forks, N.D.; one sister-in-law, Doris Knutson, of Richfield, Minn.; two grandchildren, Anna and Elijah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Wilmer “Bill” Knutson.

Mary V. Kochenderfer
Mary V. Kochenderfer, 88, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 4 p.m. today at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia, with the Rev. John O’Donnell as celebrant. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Cadilac Memorial Gardens East, Clinton Township, Mich. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home.

Mary V. Kochenderfer, 88, of Virginia, died on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in Virginia as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born on Sept. 11, 1913, in Barrows, Minn., to Joseph and Valaria (Roszkoski) Napierala, and was raised in Virginia. She and her husband lived in St. Clair Shores, Mich., after their marriage. She worked for the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit. She had been a Virginia resident since 1989, when she came to take care of her brother. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Virginia.

Survivors include three sons, David (Kathleen) Kochenderfer of Prescott, Ariz., James (Sharon) Kochenderfer of Tawas City, Mich., and Michael (Charlene) Kochenderfer of Macomb, Mich.; four grandchildren; one sister, Clara Rarus of Gaylord, Mich.; and one brother, Joseph Napierala of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard Kochenderfer in 1986; one sister, Josephine Gordon; and one brother, Harry Napierala.

Jean Van Dyk
Jean Van Dyk, 72, SERVICES: Funeral at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. Ray Anderson will officiate. Visitation for one hour before service. Burial in Eveleth Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Ridgeview Medical Center Hospice in Waconia, Minn.

Jean Van Dyk, 72, of Delano, Minn., died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the Delano Nursing Home.

She was born Jan. 17, 1930, to John and Esther (Perala) Hallfors in Makinen.

Survivors include five children, Lester (Donna) Sipola of Scandia, Minn., Dan (Karen) Sipola of Monticello, Minn., Debbie (Maurice) Van Dyk Rodriguez of Scottsdale, Ariz., Barbara Van Dyk (Dean Herman) of Phoenix, Ariz., and John (Amy) Van Dyk of Eveleth; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five sisters and brothers, Esther (Wayne) Salmi of Eveleth, Helen Budisalovich of Fredenberg, Minn., Arlene (Glenn) Hallin of Texas, Melvin (Elvira) Hallfors of Makinen and Lester (Delphi) Hallfors of Iron; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Van Dyk; her parents; and a sister, Lorraine Johnson.

Charles Joel Larsen
Charles Joel Larsen, 42, SERVICES: Funeral at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tower. The Rev. LeRoy Holmes will officiate. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. today in the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora and for one hour before service at the church. Burial in Lakeview Cemetery in Tower.

Charles Joel Larsen, 42, of Aurora died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

He was born Sept. 25, 1959, in Soudan to Archie and Barbara (Dye) Larsen. He graduated from Tower-Soudan High School and served his country in the Army and the National Guard. He worked as a program assistant for the Duluth Regional Care Center in Aurora from the late 1980s to the present.

He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and enjoyed spending time at his father’s cabin on Lake Vermilion. Throughout his life Charles was a generous and giving person. In his death he continued to give to others by being an organ donor.

He is survived by his son, Michael, of Tower; fiancee, Jeanne Ceglar, and her daughter, Mindy, of Aurora; sisters, Randi Dix of Soudan and Katherine (Thomas) Mayo of Tower; and brothers, John (Jan) Larsen of Embarrass and David (Debra) Larsen of Britt. He was also loved by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dolores M. Smith
Dolores M. Smith, 75, SERVICES: Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Madonna Towers Chapel in Rochester, Minn., with the Rev. Emmett Tighe as celebrant. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester and for one hour before service at Madonna Towers on Monday. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester.

Dolores M. Smith, 75, of Rochester died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

She was born May 4, 1927, in Eveleth to Joseph F. and Julia F. (Nemgar) Ellersich. She married Robert J. Smith at Eveleth on Sept. 3, 1949. She attended the College of St. Teresa in Winona and graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester in 1949 as a registered nurse. She was a homemaker throughout much of her life. She enjoyed golf and was a charter member of the Northern Hills women’s golf group.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; two sons and one daughter, Julie (Arnold) Steinlage of Reno, Nev., Jeff (Linda) Smith of Zumbrota, Minn., and Darvy (Kathy) Smith of Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Ellersich, of Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by a grandson and by her parents.

Rosemary A. “Mary” Ross
Rosemary A. “Mary” Ross, 75, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel in Duluth with Chaplain Craig Carlson officiating. Services entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Rosemary A. “Mary” Ross, 75, Duluth, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in the loving presence of her family.

She was born Sept. 8, 1927 in Eveleth to Phillip and Rosa Altobelli. She married Howard S. Ross in 1947. She lived in Proctor for 53 years before moving to Duluth. She was a former member of St. Rose Catholic Church and was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. She retired from St. Louis County Social Services in 1993, after 15 years of service. She also worked at St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth Avionics and West Duluth County Day Care Center at Good Shepherd Church. She was an active volunteer for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and loved doing for people in many ways. She belonged to the Rainbow Band and enjoyed gardening, music, traveling, ceramics and just enjoyed life to the fullest.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna (Tom) O’Connell of Hoffman Est., Ill., Brenda (Dale) Taylor of Cotton, and Shari (Keith) Christensen of Proctor; son Allyn Ross of Duluth; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, two brothers and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard; parents; a sister, Angie Horoshak and a brother, Steve Altobell.

Justin Bauer
Justin Bauer, 32, SERVICES: Funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth, with the Rev. Frank F. Perkovich officiating. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth and for one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment in the Eveleth Cemetery.

Justin Bauer, 32, of Eveleth died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, as the result of an accident on Highway 53.

He was born on Jan. 28, 1970, in Virginia. He graduated from Eveleth High School and had attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Rassmussen College in St. Cloud. He had also attended Lake Superior College for fire training. He was currently driving truck for C & B Warehouse in Virginia. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church. He enjoyed working with his sled dogs, his music and writing. He was an avid outdoorsman and was a loving papa.

He is survived by his companion and life mate, Marcy; his son Steven and daughter Elizabeth, both at home; his parents, Steve and Linda Shykes of Fayal Township; his father, Stanley Bauer; brothers, Adam (Dawn) Shykes and Jayson (Angela) Shykes, both of Duluth; numerous nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and uncles, Vernon Shykes and Earl Emery.

Eino Lepisto
Eino Lepisto, 91, SERVICES: Funeral 2 p.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Ely, with the Rev. John Bonk officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will follow in the Ely Cemetery. Family services provided by Kerntz Brothers, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely.

Eino Lepisto, 91, of Ely died Friday, June 13, 2003, in the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home.

He was born Sept. 6, 1911, in Ely to William and Hella (Lassi) Lepisto. He attended Ely schools. He married Lillian Sandstrom on Aug. 17, 1935, and was a lifelong Ely resident. He worked at the Zenith and Reserve mines until his retirement. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and Ely Senior Citizens.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian; daughters, Judith Rudman of Duluth, Darlene (Duane) Mackie of Babbitt and Cheryl (Daryl) Lamppa of Tower; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; his brother, Helmer Lepisto, of Virginia; sister-in-law, Helen Lepisto, of Aurora; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Toimi, William and Toivo.
