Marcia A. Johnson
Marcia A. Johnson, 69, SERVICES: Memorial services at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home Chapel in Eveleth with the Rev. Donald Norr officiating.

Marcia A. Johnson, 69, of Eveleth died Wednesday, June 17, 2003, surrounded by her family at her residence following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Eveleth on Aug. 4, 1933, to Roy and Rose (Doria) Vanderwalker. She was a longtime Eveleth resident. Marcia was an accomplished pianist and taught piano.

She is survived by her sons, Steven Johnson and Damon Johnson, both of Eveleth, and Kevin (fiancee Terry Anderson) Johnson of Fayal Township; grandchildren, Bob, Jeremy, Eric, Andrew and Danny; sisters, Greta, Carrie, Veryle, Doris and Bernadette; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

Louis M. Coviello
Louis M. Coviello, 82, SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. The Rev. Larry Antus O.M.I. will be the officiant. A gathering of family and friends will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Louis M. Coviello, 82, of Cook, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at his residence.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Canio and Ann Coviello. He grew up in Chicago and went to school there. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as an aviation machinist’s mate. Louie married Claire Jurd in Chicago, on July 9, 1949. The couple made their home in Chicago, where Louie was a truck mechanic in a service garage. They moved to Lake Vermilion-Cook in the 1960s and built, owned and operated Retreat Lodge. Louie was an avid tinkerer and inventor, a beloved uncle and a friend to many. He was a member of the Cook Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1757.

He and Claire wintered for many happy years at Gulf Shores, Alabama.

He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 53 years, Claire, along with several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by two brothers, Rocco and Tony Coviello, and two sisters, Lucy Ulrich and Laura Coviello.

Hannah Jo Simone
Hannah Jo Simone, 16, SERVICES: A celebration of love and remembrance for Hannah Jo will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Ely Baptist Church. Pastor Kevin Hanson will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday and will continue until the service time at the church. Inurnment will be in the Ely Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Ely Nordic Wolves Ski Team or Trout Lake Camp. Family Services provided by Kerntz Brothers, A Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely. Hannah Jo Simone, 16, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, June 18, 2003.

She was born May 3, 1987, in Everett, Wash., and was a member of the Ely Baptist Church. She was in Peer Helpers, the Ely Baptist Youth Group, and On Target. She was a part of the Varsity Swim Team, Ely Nordic Wolves Ski Team, and participated in track. Hannah was a good friend with a sweet and tender heart.

Hannah is survived by her parents, Mike and Wendy Sibley of Ely; her father, David Simone of Portland, Ore.; brother, Silas Simone of Superior; sisters, Athena Simone of Brainerd and Chrissy Sibley of Hibbing; maternal grandparents, Dick and Joanne Zahn of Ely; paternal grandparents, Joe Simone of Portland, Christine Brollier of Oregon, and Marge Prahl of Duluth; aunts and uncles, including Pam and Grant Netzer of Ely; and cousins, Nathan and Chantel Netzer.

She was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Melvin Carlson, Vida Johnson and John Zahn.

Elaine J. Bird
Elaine J. Bird, 79, SERVICES: Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Virginia. The Rev. Donald C. Norr will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, and continue from noon until the service Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Ely Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Good Shepherd Church.

Elaine J. Bird, 79, of Virginia, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

She was born July 22, 1923, to Andrew and Hilma (Lindbeck) Sund in Ely, where she grew up and attended school. She worked at various resorts in the Ely area. She married Lloyd Bird on Feb. 26, 1944, in Ely. She was a Red Cross volunteer for 20 years and also volunteered at the Virginia Convalescent Center and the Arrowhead Nursing Home. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She was known for her faith and was very active in Bible studies and the Christian Women’s Club.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd; daughter, Nancy (Greg) Andrews of Virginia; sons, Duane (JoAnn) Bird of Gilbert, Jerome (Kim) Bird of Doniphan, Mo., Raymond (Mary) Bird of Sandpoint, Ind.; grandchildren, Kevin (Jacklyn) Bird, Jeremy (Jennifer) Bird, Lynsay (Trevor) Pierson, Tracy Bird, Sarah, Corey, Kyle, and Rachel Andrews, Tyson and Conner Bird; brother, Emmett (Mary) Sund of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; seven sisters.

Arthur William Toratti
Arthur William Toratti, 83, SERVICES: Private family arrangements to be determined by son, Lt. Colonel Milton Arthur Toratti, recipient of three Bronze Stars, including a “V” device for heroism.

Arthur William Toratti died early in the morning Friday, June 20, 2003.

He was born May 24, 1920, in Aurora to Impi and Evert Toratti of Aurora. In 1939, he married Martha Wilhelmina Skantz of Embarrass. She died Sept. 6, 2002. During their married years as “Art and Mart,” “Tram and Tra” created legends. He was a foreman for Erie Mining (LTV), a veteran or World War II, and a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. In the spirit of self-sufficiency, the family includes a Vietnam veteran, Persian Gulf veteran, and Army captain, business executives, medical professionals, a published author, a firefighter, and Eagle Scout, a successful artist whose son was given a Congressional award for volunteer work by President Ronald Reagan at the White House, and devoted mothers of the family children. Later this summer another Toratti will join the family to become a good citizen and follow in the footsteps of their parents living a clean and productive life.

He is survived by three children, Marsha Vieno (Michael) Parr of Knife River, Minn.; son, Milton Arthur (Janette) of Mankato, Minn.; son, Melvin Arnold (Sharon) of Aurora; grandchildren, Scott (Shelly) of Virginia, Tom of International Falls, Ted (Lisa) of Mason, Ohio, Trevor (Julie) of Denver, Colo., Jayne (Kevin) Fransen of Knife River, Amy Parr of Duluth; seven great-grandchildren; two nieces; a large family in Finland; many close cousins; one very special aunt, his mother’s sister, Aili Lahti of Aurora; and his friend Stephanie.

Joan C. (Alto) Heino
Joan C. (Alto) Heino, 62, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at First English Lutheran Church in Menahga, Minn., with Rev. Steven A. Bruer officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Cardini-Behrens Funeral Home in Menahga and one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are by Cardini-Behrens Funeral Homes of Menahga and Sebeka, Minn.

Joan C. (Alto) Heino, 62, of Menahga, formerly of Eveleth, passed away peacefully at daughter Trudy’s home surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, June 18, 2003, after a very courageous battle with cancer.

She was born to Raymond and Irene (Arola) Alto on July 20, 1940, in Becker County, Minn. She graduated from Menahga High School in 1958. Joan was united in marriage to John Heino on July 30, 1960. The Heinos made their home in Eveleth until moving to Menahga in 1990. Joan worked for Mesabi Community College for more than 20 years.

Survivors include one son, Tyrone (Twyla) Heino; two daughters, Trudy (Tony) Tassoni and Twyla (Bret) George; six grandchildren, Brittany George, Jazma Heino, Kaylee Tassoni, Nick Tassoni, Kendra George and Dylan Heino; siblings, Jane (Ben) Verbick, Levoune (Ron) Lindbom, Anthony (Della) Alto, Norman Alto, Peter Alto; eight nieces; six nephews; and a host of other family and friends. Mom, you taught us the true meaning of “sisu’’ and we are forever grateful for all that you have done for each of us. You will be deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, John Alto.

Robert Lee Ziemba
Robert Lee Ziemba, 50, SERVICES: Memorial service at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. The Rev. Donald Norr will officiate. Visitation for one hour before the service.

Robert Lee Ziemba, 50, of Gilbert died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 23, 1952, in Prescott, Ariz. He graduated from high school in Clifton, Ariz., and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving overseas on various submarines. He married Susan Marie Curnow on June 22, 1982, in Duluth. He was an auto mechanic by trade. He was a member of Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post 239 in Virginia and was an avid fisherman.

Robert is survived by his wife, Susan; his children, Marlena Hernandez of Casa Grande, Ariz., Nikki Love of Prescott, Ariz., Robert Love of Prescott, Ariz., Thomas Holmes of Gilbert and Kristina Ziemba of Minnetonka; his mother, Kitty Juhala of Oregon; brothers, William Deming of Arizona and Leonard Holmes of Oregon; sister, Terry Thompson of Oregon; six grandchildren; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Martin and Darlene Curnow of Gilbert; and several nieces and nephews.

Ettarae Kelly
Ettarae Kelly, 70, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keewatin. The Rev. Ron Gagne will be celebrant. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the church. A private inurnment will take place in the Wildwood Cemetery in Cohassat. Ettarae (McGillivray) Kelly, 70, of Keewatin, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing following a brief illness.

She was born June 15, 1933, in Eveleth, to Reynold and Ethel (Prince) McGillivray. She was an avid reader and was passionate about the professional sports teams from Minnesota, especially the Twins, and all athletics at the University of Minnesota. She was active in Minnesota politics. During her life, she had been active in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, St. Mary’s Catholic Church CCD, the Keewatin Public Library, and taught the Great Books program in the Nashwauk-Keewatin public schools.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel Sr.; four loving children, Daniel Kelly Jr. of Keewatin, Roderick (Michele) Kelly of North Aurora, Ill., Mary Kelly of Green Bay, Wis., and Patrick (KellyAnne) Kelly of Alexandria, Va.; five grandchildren, Brendan, Caroline, Katherine, Patrick, and Peter; a sister, Samantha Peterson of Ajijic Jalisco, Mexico; two brothers, Roderick (Mary Anne) McGillivray of Easley, S.C., and Russell (Paola) McGillivray of Washburn, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Reynold McGillivray.

Joseph Lawrence Mismash
Joseph Lawrence Mismash, 93, SERVICES: A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kerntz Brothers, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely. Burial for Joe and his wife Mary will follow at the Ely Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kerntz Brothers, a Bauman Family Funeral Home. Joseph Lawrence Mismash, 93, died Friday, June 20, 2003, in the Ely Bloomenson Nursing Home.

“Mish,” as he was called by friends, loved the wilderness. He had countless stories of Stormy in Canada and picking berries on Blueberry Hill. He often told the story of being trapped in the underground Pioneer Mine and being saved by his co-workers. He was born Nov. 5, 1909, to Frank and Frances (Hochevar) Mismash. He married Mary Kovach on June 21, 1934, and made his home in Ely. Joe retired in 1968 when the Pioneer Mine closed.

He is survived by his brother, Louis; and sister, Ann Jaeger, both of Aurora; sister-in-law, Mollie Logar of Ely; several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary on Nov. 2, 2002; brothers, Tony, Frank, Victor, and Fred; sisters, Mary Turk and Frances Marsnik.

Douglas Hugo Martinson
Douglas Hugo Martinson, 47, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alango Township. The Rev. Don Gaturmson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Alango Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Douglas Hugo Martinson, 47, of Angora in Alango Township, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

He was born March 14, 1956, in Cook, to Stanley and Flora Mae (Willett) Martinson Sr. He grew up in Britt and Angora, attended Virginia schools and graduated from Cook High School. He attended vocational school in Thief River Falls. He married Rhonda Hakkila on Feb. 27, 1976 in Superior, Wis. Following marriage, they made their home in Angora. He was employed as a construction welder and in the logging industry. He owned and operated his own logging company until illness caused his retirement in 1992. He kept himself active with a part-time firewood business. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed camping, his horses, singing and playing guitar.

Douglas is survived by his wife, Rhonda; children, Jason and Larissa Martinson of Angora; brother, Stan “Punky” (Cindy) Martinson Jr. of Britt; sisters, Lynette “Cricket” Hakkila of Angora, and Theresa Martinson of Angora; nieces and nephews, Ron (Michelle) Hakkila, Shawn Martinson, Nikki Martinson and Lynn “Dolly” Hakkila; grandniece, Hailey Hakkila; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley Sr. and Flora Mae.

Edward L. Krainik
Edward L. Krainik, 87, SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm. The Rev. Fr. Frank Perkovich will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass. Burial will follow in the Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Chisholm.

Edward L. Krainik, 87, of Chisholm, died Friday, June 20, 2003, at Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.

He was born Jan. 4, 1916, in Chisholm, to Angelo and Frances (Lesar) Krainik. He was a 1935 graduate of Chisholm High School and was a lifelong Chisholm resident. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater.

Ed was united in marriage to Louise M. Charmoli Motherway in 1956. He retired in 1981 as a maintenance engineer from Chisholm School District 695 after 11 years of service. He previously worked for R. Maturi Corporation as a heavy equipment mechanic from 1945 to 1969. He had also worked for the former Mahne Hardware and Funeral Home in Chisholm. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Chishom; the SNPJ Lodge in Chisholm, where he served as secretary for 30 years; the Minnesota Federation of SNPJ Lodges, where he served as president for 15 years; was a past commander of the Crellin-Gustafson VFW post 1340 of Chisholm; and Operating Engineers Local 49. He was an avid reader and loved woodworking and gardening.

He is survived by his son, Martin (Susan) Motherway of Grand Rapids; grandson, Mark (Christina) Motherway of Grand Rapids; great-granddaughter, Gina Marie Motherway; sister, Mary Casey Vukelich of Chisholm; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Louise M. on Feb. 2, 1997; a sister, Bertha Maturi; and an infant brother.

Irene S. Ratliff
Irene S. Ratliff, 91, SERVICES: A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cherry Cemetery. Rev. Joseph Johnson will officiate.

Irene S. Ratliff, 91, of San Diego, Calif., died Feb. 4, 2003, in San Diego.

She was born Dec. 28, 1911, in Mountain Iron, a daughter of Matt and Sanna Kroot of Cherry. She was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Congregation.

Survivors include daughter, Marlene Smith of San Diego; a brother, John Kroot of Duluth; a niece, Beatrice Bozich of Lakeville, Minn.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a daughter, Phyllis Stephan; and her parents.

Arthur John Jarve
Arthur John Jarve, 80, SERVICES: A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Highway 169. The Rev. John Frahm will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the East Pike Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Babbitt Color Guard.

Arthur John Jarve, 80, of Pike, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born on March 8, 1923, in Argo Township, to Mike and Sanna (Lespi) Jarve. Art grew up and attended school in Embarrass. He lived most of his life in the Embarrass-Pike area. He was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in Italy. He operated and worked with several oil and gas companies in Virginia and International Falls. Art was united in marriage to Lorraine Boelk on June 11, 1955, in Littlefork. He delivered milk for Aysta Dairy before going to work for Erie Mining. He retired in 1985 after 25 years of service. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and a life member of the Babbitt Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1539. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend whose life centered around church and family.

Art is survived by his wife, Lorraine; four children, DeEtta (Steve) Clemenson of Duluth, Donna Jarve of Sauk Rapids, Janice (Denton) Strohschein of St. Cloud, and Dana Jarve of Sauk Rapids; eight grandchildren, Aric, Aaron and Alan Strohschein, Jay Clemenson, and Ashley, Christopher, Dustin and Blake Jarve; special nephew, David Pike and his family of Embarrass; three sisters-in-law, Edith Jarve of New Jersey, and Mary Jarve and Margaret Jarve, both of Cloquet; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ora Pike, Anerva Pike and Ina Pajari; and five brothers, Filmer, Arvo, Armond, Alvar and Allen Jarve.
