Marlin Hofmeyer
Marlin Hofmeyer, 62, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at the United Presbyterian Congregational Church in Ashland, Wis., with Dr. Darrel M. Robertson officiating. Private interment will take place at a later date. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today and continue until the hour of service at the church. Memorials in lieu of flowers for a fund to be established in his name at a later date are preferred. Arrangements by the Mountain Funeral Home of Ashland and Mellen.

Marlin J. Hofmeyer, 62, of Ashland, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2003, at his residence, of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 1, 1940, in Sanborn, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Dorothy Hofmeyer. He was employed by Murphy McGinnis Media and was the publisher of The Daily Press in Ashland, retiring in May 2002. He had been advertising director at the Mesabi Daily News for several years in the 1980s.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie (Peter) Simpson of Oscoda, Mich., and Cindy (Jason) Hofmeyer of Traverse City, Mich.; two grandchildren, Matthew and Emma Simpson; one sister, Hope Hofmeyer of Sanborn, Iowa; and a nephew, Don Hofmeyer of Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Kim Lynnette Carlson
Kim Lynnette Carlson, 21, SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. The Rev. Frank Perkovich will officiate. Burial will be in the Hoyt Lakes Cemetery.

Kim Lynette Carlson, 21, of Hibbing, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at the University Medical Center-Mesabi Hospital in Hibbing.

She was born in Aurora and resided in Hoyt Lakes until age five, when she moved to the Range Center in Chisholm. Kim attended schools in Chisholm, Hibbing and Virginia, graduating in 2003. She had recently begun employment at the Range Center. In her spare time, she enjoyed listening to music and walking.

She is survived by her mother, Terri Carpenter and step-father Curt Carpenter of Hoyt Lakes; paternal grandparents George and Gretchen Carlson of Esko; brother, Adam (Cari Pospeck) of Virginia; half-brother Bret Hall of Proctor; half-sister, Kelly (Gary) Flood of Duluth; three nieces; six uncles; and three aunts.

She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Jay Carlson; maternal grandparents, Jack and Angie Larson; and an uncle, Tim Carlson.

Lucille M. Franks
Lucille M. Franks, 83, SERVICES: Family graveside services will be held at a later date at the Arlington National Cemetery in the state of Virginia. Arrangements are by the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

Lucille M. Franks, 83, Cook, formerly of Springboro, Ohio, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at the Cook Nursing Home.

She was born on April 19, 1920, at Dayton, Ohio. She married John H. Franks Jr. on July 4, 1941. She spent many years with her husband in the military, traveling and living in various parts of the world. Upon her husband’s retirement from the Army, they settled in Springboro, Ohio. She moved to Orr in 1994, to live with her son and family, and has resided at the Cook Nursing Home the past several years.

Survivors include a son, John H. (Donna) Franks III, of Orr; a daughter, Lucille (Eugene) Florio of Springboro, Ohio, three grandchildren, Christopher Florio, John C. and Ashley Franks.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John on July 29, 1969, and 12 brothers and sisters.

Evelyn M. Pfeifer
Evelyn M. Pfeifer, 84, SERVICES: Funeral at 10 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Virginia with the Rev. Joyce Slostead officiating. Visitation for one hour before the service. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements by Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.

Evelyn M. Pfeifer, 84, of Virginia died Wednessday, June 25, 2003, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 15, 1919, in Hibbing to Arthur and Agnes (Hoffer) Eggen and grew up in Mountain Iron and Virginia. She had been a longtime Virginia resident. On May 15, 1937, she married Chauncey L. Pfeifer. She was a homemaker and a member of United Methodist Church of Virginia and the Lady Trainmen.

Survivors include one son, Brian (Elana) Pfeifer of Eveleth; three grandchildren, Betsy, Brian and Donald; one sister, Jean Bowser of Eveleth; one brother, Oliver Eggen of Virginia; sister-in-law, Joan (William) Wirtanen of Gilbert; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her paretns; husband, Chauncey L. Pfeifer; daughter, Jean Pfeifer; and a brother, Donald Ostland.

Hollis Browne
Hollis Browne, 64, SERVICES: Private burial will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl.

Hollis Browne, 64, died Memorial Day, May 26, 2003.

He was born in Virginia, raised in Buhl and settled in Walnut Creek, Calif. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He served in the Army at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and was an expert rifleman.

He is survived by two sons, Michael Browne and Hollis Browne; daughter, Donna Browne; four grandchildren, Loren Bledsoe, Matthew Browne, Nicole Browne and Jack Bledsoe.

Ann Marie Anderson
Ann Marie Anderson, 48, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Virginia, with the Rev. John Cowan officiating. Visitation 5-8 p.m. Monday at Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia, and will continue an hour prior to service Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Milaca at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Memorials are preferred to SMDC East Range Hospice, 1201 Eighth St. S., Virginia MN 55792. Ann Marie Anderson, 48, of Virginia died Saturday, June 28, 2003, at her residence.

She was born July 5, 1954, in Henning Minn., to Wesley and Shirley (Johnson) Tokelson. She lived in Mille Lacs for 15 years, and in Mountain Iron the past 10 years. She married Jerry Anderson on Nov. 29, 1980, in Henning. She worked in customer service and real estate for a bank in Moorhead, as an executive secretary for an abstract company in Clay County, as a manager for Izatys Resort on Mille Lacs Lake and as a real estate agent and assistant manager of Ruttgers on Bay Lake in Deerwood, Minn. She was a partner in ownership of the Tri-City Dairy Queens. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church; she sang, and played guiter and accordian. She loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and being in the woods. She was a crafts person and often was the church decorator. Ann always wore a smile.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry; children, Ed Anderson of Virginia, Amy (Kevin) Paxton of Milaca and Wally Anderson of Cambridge; parents, Wesley and Shirley Torkelson of Henning; grandchildren, Michael, Miles and Alexandria Paxton; a brother, Steven (Pat) Torkelson, of Henning; a sister, Lora (Jason) Sutter, of Greendale; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Maria and Sigval Johnson and Rosie and Alice Torkelson.

Marcella Altobell-Warner
Marcella Altobell-Warner, 81, SERVICES: Memorial services are pending.

Marcella (Marcy) Warner, 81, of Newport, N.C., formerly of Eveleth died June 19, 2003, at the Carter General Hospital Hospice Unit. She fought a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer for the last year.

Marcy was born June 8, 1922, in Eveleth to Filippo and Rose (Iammarino) Altobell. She was raised in Eveleth and attended school there and later went to the Virginia School of Cosmetology. She owned and operated Marcy’s Beauty Salon in Eveleth for many years.

One of her greatest joys was cooking for family and friends for special occasions. She also loved being with people and enjoyed a good conversation. She was a member of the Eveleth Curling Club and the Hairdressers Association.

After many years in Eveleth, Marcy moved to Niagara Falls, N.Y., where she met her husband Richard. They settled in Newport.

She is survived by husband, Richard; son, Reginald Gaffke of Arkansas; brothers, Romi Altobell of Eveleth and John Altobell of Arkansas; sisters, Santina Carlson of Virginia and Anita Petron of Ohio; grandchildren, Celine, Denise, and Michelle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Carmen Gaffke; sisters, Angeline Horoshak and Mary Ross; and a brother, Steve Altobell.

Jeffrey J. Boshey Sr.
Jeffrey J. Boshey Sr., 47, SERVICES: Tribal rites will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Bois Forte Center Gym at Tower. Gilbert Smith will be the spiritual advisor. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at the gym. Interment will be in the Bois Forte Vermilion Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook.

Jeffrey J. Boshey Sr., 47, of Virginia, formerly of Bois Forte, Tower, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1955, at Cook, the son of Raymond and Gloria (Pete) Boshey. He grew up at Bois Forte, Tower. He completed the carpentry course at Eveleth Vo-Tech and was employed as a carpenter for various firms that were involved in construction projects at Bois Forte. He was a member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and enjoyed playing bingo and blackjack at Fortune Bay Casino. Earlier he had worked at Minntac.

He is survived by his wife, Mary ; his parents, Raymond and Gloria Boshey of Bois Forte, Tower; four sons, Jared at home, and James, Jeff Jr., and Joel, all of Duluth; one daughter, Jade at home; four brothers, Gary, Dale and Steve Bosheym, all of Bois Forte, Tower, and Keith Boshey of Virginia; two sisters, Beverly (Clint) Miller of Embarrass and Cindi (Vernon) Adams of Virginia; six grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Terrance “Tabby” Boshey, on Oct. 17, 1999.

Rose (Indihar) Johnson
Rose (Indihar) Johnson, 92, SERVICES: Memorial Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert. The Rev. David Forsman will be celebrant. Inurnment will be in the Gilbert Cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.

Rose (Indihar) Johnson, 92, of Gilbert, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, in the Virginia Convalescent Care Center.

She was born Oct. 3, 1910, in Gilbert to Anton and Mary (Erchul) Indihar. She graduated from Gilbert High School, Superior State Teachers College and later the University of Minnesota. She married Dr. George Johnson and lived in St. Paul for 21 years. Dr. Johnson died in 1953, and Rose moved and taught school in Buhl for 21 years.

She was a member of Minnesota Education Association, the National Education Association, AARP, the Gilbert and Mountain Iron Senior Citizens. She was also active in the Buhl Curling Club, Virginia Women’s Golf Club and bowling at Plaza Bowl in Virginia. She was a previous member of Our Lady of Sacred Heart Church in Buhl, Sacred Heart Church in Virginia and currently was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert.

She is survived by her sister, Julia Merrill; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; six brothers; and three sisters.

Aino Rankila
Aino Rankila, 80, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, with Pastor Antii Lepisto officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia at a later date.

Aino (Luhtala) Rankila, 80, of Virginia, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at her home.

She was born April 16, 1923, in Saynatsalo, Finland. She retired from St. Louis County as a homemaker home health aide. She also worked at the Arrow Shirt Factory and First National Bank in Virginia. In Finland, Aino was employed as a kindergarten aide and a telephone operator. She immigrated to the U.S. wiih her husband, Eino Luhtala, and son, John Luhtala, in May 1959. She was an active member in Suomi Kerho and other Finnish-American organizations. In later life her greatest joys were visiting with her two granddaughters, Jenny and Janine, taking care of her “granddog,’’ Farley, baking (especially Finnish biscuits) for everyone and knitting.

She will be sadly missed by her son, John (JoAnn) Luhtala, of Duluth; and her granddaughters, Jenny (Christian) Wernau of Rochester, Minn., and Janine Luhtala of Bloomington, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Eino Luhtala and Roy Rankila; her parents; and her brother, Yrho Aho.

Marvin Salo
Marvin Salo, 76, SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills, Minn. A family gathering will be one hour before the service. Arrangements by Karvonen & Xon Funeral Home of New York Mills.

Helene Francel
Helene Francel, 92, SERVICES: Funeral Mass was held on Sept. 26, 2003, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Crystal.

Helene (Kochaver) Francel, 92, formerly of Gilbert and Lake Eshquagama, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2003, in St Louis Park.

She was born Dec. 2, 1910, in Mountain Iron to John Kochaver and Marie (Tissel) Kochaver. She graduated from Villa St. Scholastica High School in 1927 and from the College of St. Scholastica in 1931. After graduation she taught high school English in the St. Louis County schools until her marriage on Aug. 31, 1942 to John J. Francel. During her time in Gilbert she was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. In 1982, she moved to New Hope, Minn. While in New Hope, she participated in and was a leader of several senior citizens groups.

She is survived by her daughters: Mary Helen of Amarillo, Texas, and Margaret Ann of Charleston, S.C.; her granddaughters: Milou of New Ulm, Minn., Mira of Lodi, Calif., and Heather Gullic of Wichita, Kan.; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John J., in 1982 and her son, John T., in 1992.
