Armas E. Kamunen
Armas E. Kamunen, 69, SERVICES: Visitation will be from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service Thursday at Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Jeffrey Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Toivola Cemetery in Toivola.

Armas E. Kamunen, 69, of Toivola, died Saturday Oct. 4, 2003 at the Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth due to complications from pneumonia. He was born on Oct. 12, 1933, to Oscar and Nellie (Palomaki) Kamunen in Toivola where he was a lifelong resident. He married Donna Hendrickson on June 26, 1965 in Palo. Armas was very well known as an accomplished musician. He had a passion for music. His accordion style touched the hearts of many, that could be heard anywhere from radio to Ironworld. He was a certified welder working in the construction industry and a member of Ironworkers Local No. 563 of Duluth.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; son, Loren Rey Kamunen of Toivola; daughter, Tina Marie (Scott) Bennett of Zim; sisters, Taimi Johnson of Chisholm, Minerva Imberg of Gilbert, Martha Kyllonen of Gilbert and Laila Lindquist of Virginia; brother, Herbert Kamunen; grandchildren, Shammra, Brandon, Ashley, Camille and Corey; great-granddaughter, Christell; numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones by whom he shall be sadly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Tero and Valo; sisters, Siiri Packa and Bertha Maki; and by a son, Kyle Vaughn Kamunen.

Donald Dean Blauert
Donald Dean Blauert, 51, SERVICES: Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran church in Culver, Minn. Services entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Donald Dean Blauert, 51, of Culver, Minn., entered eternal life with his Lord on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, after a tenacious two-year battle with non-small cell lung cancer and stroke.

He was born March 21, 1952, in Virginia to Henry and Lillian Blauert. He was raised in Aurora, graduating from Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School in 1970. He married Lorrie Segal in 1994 in Red Lodge, Mont. In 1972, he began his 31-year career with the DM&IR Railway Company, working as a welder and crane operator, retiring in January 2002 on account of the cancer. He enjoyed his years as a railroad man and was known well for his talent in creating whatever anyone needed out of steel. He was also very active in the railroad safety programs; was president, vice president and director of the DM&IR Veteran Employees Association; and was president of his union, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees, for many years.

Not only was Don active with the railroad, he was involved in softball, bowling and karate in his earlier years and more recently golfed on the Proctor Tuesday Night Golf League; played pool for Flips Bar, the Pit Stop and the Clip Joint; and was in the horseshoe league at the Clip Joint. He enjoyed deer hunting and duck hunting with his dad and brother for many years, giving the hunting up in recent years to watch the deer in his yard in Culver. He (alias Fish Nazi) loved pontoon fishing and ice fishing on Crooked Lake with his buddies John, Clint, Kevin and Richie. Don was a jack-of-all trades, capable of fixing or building just about anything, and he did, for anyone who asked. After his retirement, he had time to do some woodworking, with his special project being a rocking horse for his new grandson. Don was a kind, compassionate person who was loved by all who met him.

He is survived by his wife, Lorrie; son, Christopher, of Duluth; daughter Michelle, special son-in-law Richard Pizzulo and grandson Payton Pizzulo of Mobile, Ala.; parents, Henry and Lillian Blauert, of Aurora; brother, Thomas (Margie) Blauert, of Cloquet; sisters, Barbara (Tony) Plattner of Aurora and Carla (Darrel) Starken of Hoyt Lakes; sisters-in-law, Linda Bucaro of Illinois, Heidi Segel of Munger and Tammy (David) Crilly of Minneapolis; aunts, Florence Hill of Aurora, Ethel Talbot of Two Harbors, Bertha Strom of Detroit Lakes and Marion (Alfred) Bachman of Frazee; nieces, Jean, Jody, Jennifer, Toni, Angelina, Hollie, Jessy, Kaitlyn and Donna; nephews, Darren, Kevin, Frankie, Vito, James and Ryan; great-niece Kaylie; great-nephews Dustin and Stevan; and his little girls, Josie and her Pussycat.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ernest and Hilma Kleimo, Emil and Mary Blauert; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Jennings Andrew Riley
Jennings Andrew Riley, 79, SERVICES: A celebration of Jennings’ life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Pius Catholic Church in Babbitt, beginning with a visitation from noon until the funeral Mass. Jennings Andrew “Riley” Riley, 79, of Babbitt, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, in Duluth.

He was born Jan. 14, 1924, to Andrew Jennings and Genevieve Norreen (Sullivan) Riley in Coleraine. He graduated from Greenway High School and Itasca Community College in Coleraine, earning a degree in interior design. Jennings was retried from Reserve Mining Co., where he was employed as a foreman. He was married to Helen Denzel from Ulm, Germany, from Jan. 29, 1948, until her death on Nov. 19, 1999. He enlisted in the Army on June 28, 1943, and fought the ground war in France and Germany with the 29th Infantry Division until V.E. Day. He joined the National Guard on April 5, 1950, as a member of Company D, 136th Infantry in Grand Rapids, Minn. On Jan 16, 1951, during the Korean War, he was called to active duty with the 47th Infantry Division and deployed to Fort Rucker, Ala. On May 21, 1973, he was promoted to 1SG. He was a dedicated and devoted soldier who for 36 years served the U.S. Army and National Guard, retiring on Jan. 13, 1984. On the Iron Range, he was known as “Mr. National Guard,” and not only served his state and nation, but also his community, serving as commander of the American Legion Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and as Americanism Chairman for the Eighth District VFW. 1SG Riley received numerous awards and decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Minnesota Commendation Ribbon, Minnesota Good Conduct Medal, and the Minnesota State Service Medal. Jennings, always the Irishman, had a kind word, a smile, and a joke for all he met. He was named “Customer of the Year-2003” at Grandma’s Saloon in Duluth, where he met and visited many friends. He loved his country, his family and friends, his dogs, rabbits, and life.

He is survived by his children, Peter Riley of Marble, Minn., and Heidi Riley of Columbia Heights, Minn.; his sister, Noreen (Harvey) Madson of Grand Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen.

John Cackoski
John Cackoski, 87, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with the Rev. Jon Wild celebrating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass Thursday at the church. Spring inurnment will be in Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm.

John Cackoski, 87, of Chisholm, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing.

He was born Oct. 14, 1916, in Virginia, to Michael and Alexandra “Alice” (Wajna) Cackoski. He was a 1936 graduate of Chisholm High School and had been a Chisholm resident since 1923. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. John played basketball and was involved in track in high school and at Civilian Conservation Corps camps, where he served as a cook and baker. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved gardening, woodworking and stone work. He retired in 1977 as a diesel mechanic from Cummins Diesel after 25 years of service.

Survivors include his brothers, Frank of Chisholm, Jim (Anna) of Hibbing, Henry (Barbara) of Chisholm, Edward (Patricia) of Baltimore, Md.; sisters, Genevieve Briski Pernat, and Mary Bradach, both of Chisholm, and Ann (Richard) Edman of Hibbing; numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Chester; and sister, Helen Samson.

Mary G. Morrison
Mary G. Morrison, 76, SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. The Rev. Reuben Rosnau will be the officiant.

Mary G. Morrison, 76, of Angora, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at her residence.

She was born on Aug. 17, 1927, in Decatur, Ill. She grew up and was schooled in Decatur. Mary lived in several states, and she later married Johnnie J. Morrison Sr. She settled in Angora in 1995. She was a devoted homemaker, and nearly everyone who met her called her “Mom” or “Grandma” — and her family fondly remembers her as being a mother to the world. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, flowers, and growing plants indoors and out.

She is survived by her husband, Johnnie Sr.; three sons, Wayne (Martha) Hale of Cove, Ark., George (Paula) Hale of Angora, and Frank (Sondra) Hale of Galveston, Texas; one daughter, Carolyn Edison of Aurora; several step-children; four brothers; three sisters; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Joanne C. 'Girly' Quick
Joanne C. 'Girly' Quick, 72, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. The Rev. John Dietz will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Joanne C. “Girly” Quick, 72, of Hibbing, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, in her home.

She was born Jan. 24, 1931, in Hibbing, to Hjalmer and Idur (Larson) Olson. She had worked at Fingerhut for many years. In her later years, she graduated from Bemidji State University. Art was a big part of her life, and she enjoyed taking many different art classes. She was also an avid rock hound, hunting for quartz, agates, and other rocks wherever she went.

She is survived by two sons, Alan Quick of Hibbing, and Sheldon (Patricia) Quick of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Carol Moralez of Vista, Calif.; a sister, Doris Graham of Hibbing; three grandchildren, Joel Moralez, Ashlee Quick, and Bryan Quick; numerous nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harry Olson, and Arnold Olson.

Joanne Elizabeth Korkki
Joanne Elizabeth Korkki, 72, SERVICES: Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 155 Co. Rd. 24, Medina, Minn. Private burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Joanne Elizabeth (Gasper) Korkki, 72, of Superior, Wis., died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003.

She was born in Ely and was a longtime resident of Virginia.

She is survived by four children, Dennis (Penny) Korkki, Reneé (Jon) Hickman, Sandra Korkki, Mike (Karen) Korkki; eight grandchildren; brothers, Albin and Rudy Jandrey, Robert, Richard, and Charles Sampson; sisters, Dorothy Jandrey Kurth, and Veronica Sampson Johnson.

Richard K. Saarela
Richard K. Saarela, 68, SERVICES: Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening in Bell Brothers Chapel, with wake prayers at 6 p.m., and will continue from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday in St. Rose Catholic Church. Interment will be in the Ely Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services. Bell Brothers Chapel. 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Richard K. Saarela, 68, of Proctor, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 in his home. A well-known teacher and coach at Proctor, he enjoyed working with young people. Dick was an avid outdoorsman, and particularly enjoyed his Canadian Ice fishing trips. He was born in Pike Township, Minn. on April 16, 1935 to Daniel and Helia (Kopponen) Saarela. Dick was a graduate of Embarrass High School and went on to receive a Bachelors and M.E. degrees in Education from U.M.D. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, the Proctor Lions Club, Minnesota Coaches Association, and is acknowledged in the Cross-Country Coaches Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Alice (Donovan); two sons, Rick (Kirsten) and Scott (Kerry); grandchildren, Megan, Blake, Abby, and Ian; brothers, Albert, Roy, Robert, and Dan; sister, Helen Sanbaum; mother-in-law, Mary Donovan; brother-in-law, Dan Donovan; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lillian King and Florence Nelson.

Kenneth Gerald Johnson
Kenneth Gerald Johnson, SERVICES: A memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Iron Range Bible Church at 206 McKinley in Eveleth will reflect Kenneth’s love of God, Truth, and the gospel.

Kenneth Gerald Johnson of Biwabik died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, after a struggle with cancer, at his home with his sister Darlene and fiancee Ann at his side.

He was born March 26, 1946. He was a 1965 graduate of Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School. He then attended Baptist Bible College in Hutcheson, Kan. He continued studying at the R.B. Thiem Bible Ministries in Houston, Texas, and enjoying God’s word for the rest of his life. Kenneth was multi-talented and very creative, which allowed him to master many occupations.

He is survived by seven brothers, Robert (Debbie) of Aurora, Stephen (Janis) of Grand Rapids, Alan of Markham, Barry of Virginia, Darrell (Barb) of Palo, and Paul (Okhui) of Aurora; two sisters, Darlene (Russ) Kivi of Coon Rapids, and Terry (Bill) Koffler of Pine City; nieces nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his fiancee, Ann Silda.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence “Bud” and Hulda Theodora “Teddy” Johnson; three brothers, Richard, Douglas, and David; and a nephew, Timothy Johnson.

Timothy John Rushenberg
There will be a celebration of life service Aug. 7 for Timothy John Rushenberg, 46, formerly of Silver Bay, who passed away Oct. 2, 2009, at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis.

He will be laid to rest Aug. 7 at the Beaver Bay Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. The celebration of life and lunch at the Beaver Bay Recreational Center will follow.

Tim was born Aug. 22, 1963, in Two Harbors, to John and Rita Rushenberg of Silver Bay. He graduated from William Kelley High School in 1981.

He received a degree in electronics at Dunwoody Institute and a degree in business management at Cardinal Stritch University.

Tim’s interests while in high school were sports, hunting with his grandpa, and work at Jacobsen’s Hardware and Lutsen Mountains - where he became a full-time National Ski Patrol member.

He was hired by 3M in 1984. His first job with was in Nevada, Mo., as a maintenance instrument technician. He then transferred to various 3M plants in St. Paul. Three years ago he moved to Hutchinson, where he worked as a plant engineering team advisor and celebrated his 25-year anniversary with the company in April 2009.

Tim enjoyed skiing, drag racing, hiking, biking, fishing, and especially enjoyed time spent at his cabin on Potato Lake. The love of his life were his daughters, Jessica and Katie.

Tim’s life was devoted to the giving of his time and talents to others. He was a eucharistic minister; treasurer and past Grand Knight of Council 4145; a member of the Eagles; and a member of the Hutchinson Leadership Institute. He devoted many hours volunteering to help others.

Survivors include his daughters, Jessica and Katie of St. Paul; father and mother, John and Rita Rushenberg of Becker; brother, Patrick (Vanessa) Rushenberg and nephew Timothy John Rushenberg of Albuquerque; former wife, Holly Rushenberg of St. Paul; and many loving friends and family members.

Angelo S. Marinello
Angelo S. Marinello, 70, of Forest Lake and formerly of Silver Bay, passed away July 15, 2011.

He was preceded in death by parents, Rinaldo and Pia Marinello; and sister, Marilyn Mott.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Donna; children, Joe Marinello (Matthias Berghahn), Sue (Chris) Opal, Adam Marinello (Sherry Donovan); sisters, Kathleen (Gary) Kerola and Gail (Randy) Engebretson; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 19001 Jackson St. NE, East Bethel.

Arrangements by the Cremation Society of Minnesota, (612) 825-2435.

Lylia Egeland
Lylia Egeland, 83, passed away peacefully in her home in Two Harbors Aug. 1, 2011.

Lylia was born May 27, 1928, in Sleepy Eye to Maynard and Ruth Andersen. She graduated from Northwestern Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis in 1949. She married Walter Egeland of Two Harbors in 1952 and moved to Two Harbors, where she lived the rest of her life.

She was influential in the lives of countless young people in Two Harbors through her work with Girl Scouts, AFS, and Bethlehem Lutheran Church parish education.

Her passions included her Two Harbors gardens and volunteering as a second-grade reading tutor in the Wimauma Elementary School in Florida.

Lylia was preceded in death by her son, Andrew Egeland; her parents; and her brother, Bob Andersen.

She is survived by her husband, Walter, of Two Harbors and Sun City Center, Fla.; daughter, Tina Hatch of Madison, Wis.; daughter-in-law, Kathy (Guenter) Retkowski of St. Charles, Ill.; grandchildren, Reilly Hatch, MacKenzie and Max Retkowski; and three brothers.

A memorial celebration of Lylia’s life will take place at 2 p.m. Monday at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Family visitation will be held at 1 p.m.

The family requests memorials to the Wimauma Elementary School Library, 5709 Hickman, Wimauma, FL 33598 and the Duluth Girl Scouts (Martha), 424 W. Superior St, Suite G3, Duluth, MN 55802.
